Snug counter-service cafe serving dine-in or take-out khao mun gai (Thai chicken & rice).
Food is ok but big portion. Some part of rice was undercooked and side of soup tastes weird to me. I was so excited to try the chicken rice during my vacation in Houston but I couldn't get 100% of experience because they messed up my order. I supposed to get one of the original sauce and one of ginger scallion sauce (purchased extra) but they gave me 2 of ginger scallion sauce. No chance for me to try the original way. sad face.
I can say their chicken rice is still better than some places I have tried in different cities.
Had no clue Rooster and Rice & OhMyGogi! Joined forces.
The guy at the front counter was awesome, person-able, knowledgeable on the menu, and helped us out greatly. From start to finish!
I first had OhMyGogi! When they were just a taco truck driving around town and at local events like for HUG Tx2k. We absolution enjoyed everything we tried.
The Korean BBQ Street Tacos were just full of flavor as a must try item!
The sliders were our other favorite along with the quesadilla.
And Rooster & Rice is just as delicious, highly suggest for first timer to try the “cutlet” the crust and crunchiness is the way to go. Chicken was juicy, tender, and full of flavor for something so simple.
The only bad item worth noting is that seating inside is rather limited. (See pic) it’s VERY small, 4-5 seats at a bar counter top. So if you plan to sit down, you’ll have to sit outside to enjoy your hot meal.
But don’t let that stop you. We enjoyed it so much, we already went back for more today w the family. (Have to update the review with more pictures and videos of our food selections)
Definitely worth a stop and try out if your in the area.
Until next time.
Rooster & Rice offers a simple, unadorned take on classic Hainanese chicken rice. While the concept is promising, the execution left something to be desired.
The chicken, presumably their star ingredient, was unfortunately bland and lacked depth. The boiled preparation resulted in loose, underwhelming skin and meat that yearned for more flavor. The absence of spice on the chicken, rice, and cucumber further contributed to the overall lackluster experience. The accompanying Thai seasoning and chicken broth offered some respite, but ultimately couldn't salvage the dish.
While some may appreciate the minimalist approach, those who prefer bolder flavors and crave a bit of heat may be disappointed. The $14 price tag for such a basic meal also felt steep.
If you're seeking a simple, unseasoned chicken and rice dish, Rooster & Rice may suffice. However, for those who enjoy more robust flavors and spice, it might be best to explore other options.
I really liked the food. Thai chicken looks bland, cause it kind of is. It is supposed to be a light, refreshing meal. This place was good. Big portions. Nice atmosphere. Friendly service. Only drawback is the markup on everything else. Almost $2 to add an extra 1oz cup of sauce! Almost $4 for a Mexican coke!
very friendly staff but the portion is very small for the price. We ordered chicken katsu togo and 90% of the box is rice and about 5 small bits of chicken. even the cucumber side is in a small sauce container. Won't be going back
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Rooster and Rice, and I must give a special shoutout to Jose, who made my experience truly outstanding. From the moment I walked in, Jose's welcoming demeanor set the tone for what turned out to be an excellent visit.
Jose, a big guy with glasses, was perfect from beginning to end. He greeted me with a warm smile and ensured I felt comfortable and well taken care of throughout my entire visit. His knowledge of the menu was impressive, and he provided excellent recommendations that made my meal even more enjoyable.
What really stood out about Jose was his genuine commitment to customer satisfaction. He was attentive without being intrusive, always checking in at the right moments to make sure everything was just right. His friendly and approachable manner made me feel like a valued guest, not just another customer.
The food at Rooster and Rice is fantastic, but it was Jose’s exceptional service that made my experience unforgettable. He clearly takes pride in his work, and it shows in the way he interacts with guests and goes above and beyond to ensure a positive dining experience.
EDIT: I'm not removing my initial review, but we tried it again and everything seems fine now. Still didn't love how they handled the situation but whatever.
When they make it proper, it's delicious. However, we got an order once and the chicken smelled awful. Like spoiled awful. Employees said it's been smelling like that for the past day. Really want to go back but not sure I'd risk it with that lack of care for food safety.

Chicken was bland like hospital food. They missed part of our order. It's counter-serve and yet their checkout tip hustle starts at 18%. Raise your prices if you can't afford to pay your employees, but then again I wouldn't pay 18% higher prices for what I ate. Once was enough.

Food is good but ask for less salt cause it can be VERY salty. The portions are relatively small. The Ginger scallion sauce was perfecttttt but way to salty.

Their signature dish is amazing. My husband is always craving their sauce! All the guests we took to Rooster&Rice love how tender and juicy their chicken is! They gave plenty of parking spaces too! Absolutely recommend to anyone hungry!!
So delicious! been wanting to try this for awhile and it took me back to my childhood when I used to eat this weekly. def coming back to try the other iterations. 10/10 recommend
Great service, whole atmosphere was homey and relaxing. We tried multiple dishes and were greatly satisfied with everything!!!
I like the food but why do they keep getting my order wrong?? I order the Original which comes with skin and every time I get home to eat it, I realize they gave me the Heights which is skinless. This happens every time what's the deal? Am I crazy?
Ordered online and asked for extra cilantro and extra skin and was given no cilantro or skin.
Obviously the staff here can’t follow simple directions. Left super unsatisfied with my meal… thanks.
Joel deserves a raise or a management position! He knows what he’s talking about! And made come back to try this amazing food!
I LOVE this place! Hands down my favorite spot in town to get chicken and rice. The popcorn chicken with habanero sauce is a must try! What’s more their customer service is exceptional Lee is so kind and generous 10/10 recommend this place
Underrated place. Hainanese chicken inspired dishes, looks like a lot of reviews were from people that didn't know what to expect. Flavorful rice, thick and savory broth, tender chicken, completed with their signature sauces. Really solid meal for the price, better than what I expected. A lot goes into preparing the dish right and they got it right.
Friendly service and all the dishes are so flavorful and yummy. 10/10
I've held back writing a negative review for this place because the food has been good enough, but tonight's experience was so disappointing.
I can only comment on the Original because that's all I get, but it's pretty good. The chicken is plenty and never dry, the sauce is great, the broth is a nice side that comes with it--no complaints about that order.
The service is so hit or miss that when it misses, it's almost always enough to get me questioning if this will be my last visit here. Tonight, it confirmed it.
I've been here 7-10 times, so my experience isn't a one time thing. Service is decent if the older aged staff are working. If it's the younger staff, it's always been a miss. No greetings, they aren't wearing uniform, and it's unwelcoming. I came in tonight after work like usual, and it was empty except for me, to order my usual. After placing my order, the one employee dressed in gold chains and not in uniform, comes and takes the receipt to make the order. I waited only about 5-7 mins which is great. After it's done, he hands it to me like it's ready, and I notice that there's no broth like there usually is with the order. I ask for the broth, thinking he forgot to include it. He tells me that they don't have any, and it'll take some time to make. "Okay...so how long will that take?" 45 mins. How do you not have the broth ready? It's not like I came in the morning right they opened, it's prime dinner time. Why didn't he tell me this right after I ordered? He could have informed me right at the beginning so I could either change my order, cancel my order, or substitute it for something else. He wasn't going to say anything and just hand my order to me like nothing out of the ordinary. So I literally paid the same price as if I got a full order, when I'm literally missing a part of it. The audacity this clown had not to tell me as if I wouldn't know that something was missing. He didn't offer to discount me since I didn't get the full meal, didn't offer some sort of substitution or compensation--it was poorly handled. I was so upset but hungry so I just took the food and left without the broth, despite paying full price. Poor management and terrible customer service are what will kill this business. Never coming back.
I like a lot their basic traditional plate of rice and chicken and their ginger and cilantro sauce is superb. I love it. You can have it without the cilantro if you prefer. It is comfort food. Not a lot of spices. Soft in your belly.
My boyfriend and I LOVE this place!! My favorite is their popcorn chicken with their spicy sauce. A MUST TRY!!! Their service was great too, very fast and the chef was very kind and friendly too! Definitely recommend !
So good. The original poached chicken was amazing, so tender, and the dipping sauces were the perfect complement. The breaded cutlet was excellent as well. I don’t know what is on the rice but it’s so tasty. So glad this California eatery has made its way here. Will definitely be back to try out other menu items in the future!
Great food. Fried chicken was delicious.
Soooo good. It is comfort food at its finest. I wish I lived closer!!!
EDIT: you cannot trust their staff to get your order correct. Don’t order delivery. Pickup only and double and triple check your order.
They don’t know how to read or are purposely shorting you on things like extra chicken and sauces
I love the food here and not to mention the location, very convenient! Would highly recommend. Great for on the go and fresh comfort food.😊👍
My boss brings us lunch every Friday and one time introduced me to this place. Since my boss introduced me, I haven’t stopped going! 10/10 food and customer service! Just a great restaurant overall, 100% recommended.
great place if you love chicken, they cook their rice in chicken broth so it’s very unique!!!
The OG is my favorite. Highly recommend. The sauce is amazing and the chicken is tender. Lee and his staff are very helpful. Highly recommend!
Quick simple great tasting food!
Great food and service!
Inconsistent. My go-to order is the original with extra chicken, extra cucumbers, and habanero sauce. Sometimes they don't give extra of what I ordered. Sometimes the cup of broth is only filled halfway. Lately the KMG sauce recipe has been different-It's more liquid that it was when they first opened-it's supposed to be more of a thick paste. Today I ordered two of the same orders for me and my fam- they included habanero sauce in one order but not in the other. We dont like this dish without habanero sauce as even with KMG sauce the dish is tasteless and bland.
When I dined in once, the portion was much larger than what I receive whenever I DoorDash. There are only 4 barstool seats inside- it’s not a place to dine-in unless you want to sit outside in the heat.
This has to be a joke. I am absolutely terrible at cooking, and even I can make better food than this. The chicken tastes awful because they literally just boiled it, I felt like I was a POW being forced to eat it. I threw away the eggs because it was just yolk floating in water. They charged $18 for it so I thought they were pranking me when I opened the box. Even my cat smelled the food and ran away and he eats everything.
i ordered the vegetarian and was told they were out of tofu, so i got eggs instead. maybe i should have specified a way i wanted them cooked, but i had wrongly placed my trust in the judgement of the chef. i open up my togo order to find two essentially raw eggs placed on top of rice and veggies. both the veggies and rice were undercooked and overall the meal just made me sad. the broth was my one comfort because it at least, was really tasty.
Came on lunch time 12:30-1:30 pm. Paid $15 for a plate of 7slices of planko chicken on top of white rice and got some broth, 2 sauces(1 sweet chili/1 I think mayo siracha) and a conifer pickle with onions and maybe jalapeno. 1st the service was meh, I came in inform them it's my first time never been there. They suggested that I look on a tablet cuz it has pictures of the food. That's fine and all but I kind of expected a recommendation because all the pictures look the same except the planko. Now the food is ok , the rice was nice but it felt like it was cooked in broth instead of water to make steam rice. It had a flavor that was very light but it didn't mix well with the plain planko. But once I put the chili and siracha sauce it help a little. Alright so next the sauce the sweet chili was little I got this maybe 2 oz cup but it felt like they got a small spoon and put it in the cup. The siracha was all spice no flavor. And I did t eat that pickle thing. The most placent thing of my experience was the location it's nice. Wouldn't recommend it here to friends or family but if people want to eat here it's not bad, a lil expensive for the taste but it's ok, go ahead and try it, maybe y'all get a better experience.
Finally went here after looking at it for months. Pretty good food but terrible service. We waited 20-25 minutes for our food, which is ok if the food is worth it. What’s not ok was that our food was ready and waiting but they never told us. The place is tiny and they didn’t say anything to us about the food being ready. When I asked the guy who works there if that was or food, he just looked at me and nodded his head with no apologies or emotion. Added another star because the manager came out with two water bottles and a coupon to make up for the other guy, but only after I said something. Rooster and Rice, please train your people better. Not asking for fine dining service, but just asking for the basics to communicate to customers.
I grew up eating Kaw mun Kai ( chicken and rice), one of my favorite Thai dishes! I was excited to see a restaurant specialized on the dish. Maybe my expectation was too high but it was not good! We ordered 2 originals and we got ok rice with very bland shredded chicken! WTH, shredded chicken? And where is the skin? And it was $12.95 each! It tasted like a $3 meal!, honestly! The only thing that was decent was the sauce! Soooo disappointed! Not returning!
First time trying and I can say without hesitation the food was excellent. I ordered The Heights but with the fragrant chicken rice so it was pretty much like The Original except with skinless chicken breast only. The chicken was tender, the rice was flavorful and the sauces and broth took everything to the next level. I'll definitely come back to try the other dishes.
Awesome little place. So delicious.
Food is really good, it’s simple but tastes absolutely incredible. I would highly recommend adding an egg!
I was excited about visiting a new place in my neighborhood until I walked in. The young man behind the counter @2:30pm DID NOT SAY ONE WORD TO ME. He just looked at me and did not acknowledge my presence AT ALL. I stood there for about 20 seconds feeling very devalued and then I walked out. The store was empty and it's gonna stay that way with that kind of nonexistent customer service.
I was asked to go get utensils from another restaurant because they didn’t have any. I wish they mentioned that before I ordered my food.
I had to have it to go!
It’s a shame; the place is in a great location
Wonderful food. Love this place.
Amazing service and amazing team! Food is so delicious here I have gone back twice and plan on coming back to try their chicken sandwhich
Food seems bit bland without sauce... but that worked for feeding the kids. My boys love the crispy chicken with rice.
Most seating is outside at stomping ground.
The food was good but a bit upset because I paid extra for eggs and didn’t get them on my plate.
The food was yummy and I’ll definitely be back. The Original and The Cutlet was tasty.
Solid spot that’s always consistent. They’ve gotten better on wait times and communicating that at time of order. Great light and healthy option in an area that needs more.
We have dined here a couple of times now and love it! I really enjoy the original chicken, so much that I came back specifically to order it. Portions are large and the whole family (including toddler) likes the food. Staff are kind and the Stomping Grounds has a nice outdoor space.
Always a pleasure to come here!
I honestly didn't know what to expect. I almost never get excited about chicken, but the concept was so simple, I was intrigued. We ordered the original, popcorn chicken (both spicy and regular for my 10yo), and the one with panko breadcrumbs. It was all delicious, and I can't say which was my favorite. We will definitely be back. I'm already craving it again.
Love hainan chicken and this is much easier than spending hours cooking it. one of my employees is obsessed and eats here weekly haha, pretty good endorsement
The whole point of chicken and rice are the aromatics. Ginger garlic onions. This was very very bland and like eating card board
Excellent! Great new option in Houston!
Delicious. Great flavor combinations. Make sure to talk with staff if you want to be adventurous with other flavors.
Bland boiled chicken with rice, for $15. There's a reason why none boils chicken it has no taste.
Good location and friendly folks though
I’ve been to this place maybe a dozen times already since they opened. The cutlet is great but the classic is just perfect, and the rice is so tasty. The parking is really easy and the service is quick. Highly recommend!
The original chicken tasted good but not great. Thumbs up for their sauce. Rice was soft and tasted tasted fresh, and it comes with a small cup of chicken broth. We also tried an order of the popcorn chicken that was heavily seasoned and spicy. I love spicy but that was over the top. I wouldn’t recommend this… for kids or anyone who doesn’t eat spicy food. We drank so much water after that.
Custer service was bad for us, unfortunately. The guy walked away when we were about to order. Came back and pointed a finger without saying anything and didn’t look up. I stepped back to wait, another customer walked in and asked for his order. I was :| very disappointed.
Very slow service. I might give them another chance.
The place is a bit hard to find if you have never been here. The place is on the West side of the complex.
The food is very good and authentic, just like if you were in Asia.
Decent but expensive, imo.
Good food that's WAY overpriced. I'm hoping R&R is just taking advantage of their lack of competition, as they're currently the only option for lunch/dinner at Stomping Grounds. I'm having a hard time justifying $15 pre-tax for chicken and rice.
Want another KMG sauce? $2.
Want a water or coke? $3.
Remember folks this is chicken and rice that you end up paying $50 for two people....
Great place for the family. Healthy for every one. The ice cream next door is worth looking forward to.
A cashier crossed her arms and lean against the counter as we walked in and stay in that position until I ordered. No welcome No hello. Her face is basically said that she didn't want to be there aka (f. u for coming ,make her work)
*Food wise- Chicken was tender beside that everything was edible but BLAND.Rice has no fragrance no aroma no herbs not much flavors
Again, you know.. bland.Tender meat ,sauce was good(just like ginger soybean sauce). No spice options for sauce so don't expect it to has some spice as they claim to be 'Thai'
All their drinks are bottles.Thai tea ,coffee etc aren't make in the store.
Not a lot of inside seating...expect to sweat a little while eating outdoors
Stumbled across this gem that I’d love to visit regularly. I like the convenience of their quick ordering system and the spacious area outside of the restaurant to hang out. I loveee the food—the chicken is very tender, rice is soft, veggies are fresh, and the sauce just ties everything together. I personally like to dip my chicken into the sauce. Good portions with reasonable prices. Will definitely come back!
I’ve tried almost everything on the menu and everything tastes superb so far! My favorite is The Original—the sauce is just so unique and rich in flavor. Chicken is very tender. I like to order everything with a poached eggs for extra flavors too. I’m not much of a sandwich person, but I loveee their Chicken Sandwich! The congee is very good too. I also enjoy that they offer various healthy options and add-ons. Highly recommend!
I brought my 5 year old daughter here tonight for dinner. We had two different kinds of chicken w the added egg & added veggies. We broke up the veggies and put them in the tasty chicken broth that comes with each dish. We loaded the little broth bowl full of veggies & rice till it was all gone. The fried chicken & the steamed chicken were both cooked perfectly. This will be our new go to spot for lunch & dinner. Quick & Delicious food on a lawn next to our favorite made from scratch ice cream shop.
Overpriced as hell. $4 to add vegetables to a $14 “meal prep”. Very disappointed.
I’m obsessed with the rice
Great and healthy chicken. Staff was very friendly.
No service.
Hubs had the cutlet fresh and crispy and I have been under the weather and had the chicken broth with this amazing porrage with a soft egg on top so delish and perfect comfort food ! Definitely in the restaurant rotation
This was one of my favorite places for a quick and tasty meal when I lived in San Francisco, and I'm so happy they opened a store here in Houston! There are even new menu items, I can't wait to try them all out.
Amazing food! The sauces are to die for. Definitely recommend getting The Original! Staff are equally awesome!
My husband and I stumbled upon their friends and family opening and the owners were kind enough to call us family and let us try the place out. The food was delicious! The fragrant chicken rice was out of the world and the chicken was moist and perfect. The mothers sauce they put on the side was absolutely incredible and we smothered our meal in it. Also, the staff and the owners were all so kind and friendly to these two strangers who showed up. We will be back again with friends!
