Casual counter-serve outfit supplying curries, stir-fries & other familiar Thai dishes.
Food was good. Read review before coming about the food being bland but that was not true in my case. I will have to come back and try different things. I highly recommend the scallion pancakes and the cheese rolls. Ordered and got my food super fast. Plenty of parking. There's both indoor and outdoor seating.
This place is OK if you’re looking for Thai food prepared for American tastes — not too spicy or challenging. My wife, daughter and I ordered three dishes for Sunday lunch. The red curry with vegetables and tofu was a bit bland and the curry lacked a rich coconut milk flavor. The Phad Tai was the best dish but too sweet for me. Mixed vegetables with tofu was OK.
The restaurant’s decor was fine, a nice layout with solid wood chairs. The place was clean. Service was average. What disappointed me the most was that I had to eat my meal with a tiny plastic spoon.
Um, level 5 is not spicy anymore. It barely burns my lips. Last summer, I remember when I had to run to get water every few minutes eating this food. I miss that. It's not the same anymore and the fried rice is sweet.
Got the food delivered and this has to be one of the best deliveries. Food was packed great. The Pad See Ew was admittedly a bit overcooked but the flavor was good and it was plentiful. Thom Kha Soup: really good. Shrimp Spring Rolls were really fresh and came with two sauces that complimented them very well. Mango sticky rice is good. Great for delivery. Will update once I visit.
It has been a while since I had been here. The quality of the food is as I remember. I had the panang lunch special (Friday). It is a large amount of food for a good price including a side serving of veggie pad thai. Did not leave hungry! Fresh and crisp salad and spring roll with appropriate dishes hot. I got level 2 spice and it was good. Could likely have gone to 3 but couldn't remember exactly. The flavor was there as expected. My companion had the orange chicken and was pleased with it as well. It was a large serving and he had difficulty finishing it all. He was quite happy. It is casual and counter order. The tables are spotless when not in use. Recommend.
My first experience dining in last month was nice. My second experience ordering takeout was not. This place is situated in a low key area and it's quiet inside with plenty of seating. I ordered the tom yum soup with chicken (spice level hot) as well as the pineapple curry with shrimp. Is was decent overall. There were broccoli & green beans in the pineapple curry which I was not used to. The staff is polite.
However, I ordered the exact same thing yesterday for takeout and the tom yum was mild and the pineapple curry was pretty awful. The curry was super gritty and the color was off. The broccoli was brown on the ends and the carrots were really mushy... I am surprised they really packaged this for someone to eat and they accepted payment for it.
This was too great of a hit or miss so I will not return and definitely wouldn't recommend takeout.
The worst pad thai I’ve ever had the displeasure of ordering/eating. It wasn’t even edible I took two bites and could not eat anymore. Completely tasteless, absolutely nothing on it except over cooked noodles and chicken that was grainy. No flavor whatsoever.
One of my favorite Thai restaurants in Houston, and they are open every hurricane
Constantly messes up orders.

Ordered 3 savory dishes and they were all cloyingly sweet. The krapao had carrots in it and not enough basil. Never going back again.
I’ll never understand why Thai restaurants in the US make their dishes so sweet. Not the way it’s supposed to be.

I was excited to order from here after seeing the pictures and ordered a combination Pad See Ew and a large wonton soup. The soup was light and delicious and full of wontons and good amount of greens. Unfortunately I’m disappointed with the pad see ew as when I opened it there was only 1 shrimp in the whole plate, although I asked for the spiciness to be mild i expected it to have more flavor than what I got. The staff was friendly though and next time will probably order something else maybe it was a one time thing
Demasiada demora para resivir la comida

Food OK - needed more flavor. Plentiful on the plus side
Really good quality Thai food. Soups and appetizers are just as good as main course dishes
Super casual, big plates, massive flavor!!
Consistently good food. Really good place for take out but not to dine in
Great place been ordering from here for 2 years and every time the customer service is great and the food is better
I recieved the orange chicken combo meal with brown rice and the food was quality right off the stove and the quantity was plenty.. The Staff are helpful in explaining and getting what you desire to eat.
can’t go wrong with khun kay! my favorite thai place in town!
My favorite place for Thai food in Houston, definitely get the long grain black rice!
Quiet, reasonably priced and genuinely very tasty.
The curry was terrible, tasted like they used heavy cream or something in the curry so they can use less coconut milk, giving it a sad taste. There were no potatoes in the curry, the only thing in the curry that didn't taste like freezer burn was the carrots.
Same for the pad kaprow. That is the one dish I eat at any Thai spot I go to, and here it was the lowest effort. No grounded up beef, just slabs of freezer cut up steak doused in what was technically pad kaprow sauce. It was tragic.
The fried wings definitely were in the freezer too long as well, and the sauce that smothered them did not spark joy.
I paid 50 bucks to be sad that night.
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in all of my travels in the US. Great and affordable food, friendly staff and quick service, the atmosphere is simple but comfortable. There’s an outdoor patio for nicer weather days. I’m in Houston frequently and visit here often.
Ordered off grubhub. It was some of the worst Thai food I've ever eaten. Both the Panang Curry (which was supposed to be spicy) and the Pad Thai had no flavor at all. I don't mean weren't spicy, I mean had zero flavor at all like they forgot where both the spice rack and fish sauce were when making it.
So so sorry the food was terrible. I was looking so forward to this place. I end up throwing my food away. I’m sure they have good dishes, but mine wasn’t good, it was tasteless.
Simple, counter style lunch place that offers authentic Thai food at a great price. Came in and ordered the lunch special and the kitchen was bringing my appetizers to the table just as we were taking a seat after ordering.
The lunch specials are great. The cheese rolls are devine.
Food isn't the same as years back, asked for spicy but it came out sweet, asian man in front wont always get your order right.
All the bbq places were sold out so went here and soooo glad I did !! Everything was hot and delicious. Can’t wait to go back. The owner was so friendly and nice as though he had known me forever. All the food choices were great. They will make as spicy or mild as you want too. I am so picky about food and so this review is not my typical thing unless I have a negative to report. Everything was so delicious. Highly recommend !!
We frequently visit Khun Kay and really enjoy the food, service, and quality. We love the pad thai, cashew chicken, and panang curry.
Love this place
As I'm going to place my order here for the second time (still going to place an order) I remembered something funny about the first time I ordered from here.
To all who have eaten Black Rice at any point in their life I suggest substituting the standard rice given with your meal for the newly featured menu item with an additional upcharge.
If you happen to find white rice with the dark purple water from black rice pored over it and maybe a few grains of black rice speckled amongst the standard rice given please call them out.
Fraud is not cool....
I'm going to order again and see what happens
This is one of my favorite places to come eat but the last 3 times that I’ve came something is wrong with my order. I keep giving this place the benefit of the doubt and come back but I think I need to find another Thai place to go to.
Ordered Pad Thai, there was absolutely no flavor, really did not like my food.
Won't be back.
Eaten in here a few times, ordered delivery twice. The noodle dishes are so good!
Always delicious! I’ve never had anything bad from here. Friendly and fast service. My favorites are spring rolls, green curry, and pad kee mao. This is my go to Thai restaurant in Houston.
Love Thai food and the yellow curry was great
Good food.... service was no smiles...
A few coworkers and I had a group order of food from here and it was an awful experience. None of the food was labeled, so we had a hard time figuring out what was what. I ordered the chicken pad Thai & egg rolls. The pad thai was super bland, not even having the slightest bit of flavor. It tasted like someone took wet noodles and added bland boiled chicken to it. The food also took ages to arrive. The only good thing was the egg roll, but it’s pretty hard to screw that up. Overall, super disappointed experience and the food was awful tasting.
Very bad service
I LOVE Khun Kay so much! I frequent here almostttt every weekend. They catered my wedding in October and I received rave reviews from all my guests. It’s so incredible. Can’t say enough wonderful things about this place!
This place was good. Parking was easy. Portions are very large and tasty. Prices are reasonable (not too high, not too low).
Some of the best and authentic Thai food I've had in Houston
Great food with many options, with rotating specials. The staff are friendly and efficient, as I never have to wait long for my food. The only complaint is the inside doesn't have A/C, but honestly that doesn't stop people from coming in for the food.
The food was delicious and extremely prompt considering they had a bunch of online orders. The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly. I recommend getting the duck!
A staple now, it's the best Thai in Houston I think.
Ordered takeout for dinner, and the food was ready quickly. The egg rolls were delicious, but my chicken pad Thai was dry and bland. I did not order it spicy, but I didn’t expect to have zero flavor.
This simple restaurant is always a treat fresh ingredients great specials and complex tastes, they make tofu dishes seem like paradise, great for take out too, order any special and you will leave happy
Used to be our favorite place for original Thai food, however, the place is absolutely filthy.
A great spot for Thai food. I love their pad thai and veggie eggrolls.
quick and delicious, highly reccomend. They really care about their customers here too~
I enjoy eating here once a week. Lately, I eat Thai salad with shrimp and love it. This restaurant has good lunch specials.
Update: Beware of their new credit card machine. I had a bill of $14.30, and the options for tip were: $3, $5 and $7. I couldn't believe that it was asking me for a 50% tip! The low one was 20% not the usual 15%. I've come to this restaurant for years, but this made me mad.
I appreciate the response.
A little hole in the wall spot. I love stopping in to eat lunch here. I’m often the only diner inside, though I know this place stays busy with to-go orders.
They have fabulous curries, and you can grab a Thai beer to wash it all done.
Affordable place but it's was nothing to brag about. The food was "ok', it place was very stuffy at the time we visited it was empty...
I tried this place by chance while I was waiting for my car to be fixed across the street, and I'm so glad I did! I had the pad Thai lunch special at level 5 spiciness. It was super delicious and a great value. It was not overly spicy: I could add a lot more chili. I will definitely come back.
One of the best Thai restaurants I've tried in Houston and anywhere. We had the Thai street noodles, the mango curry, classic pad thai and their desserts, sticky rice with mango.
So delicious, everything tasted great. The service and staff are great too, very friendly and helpful!
Great lunch value with daily combos and a lot of food.
Cute little restaurant on the corner of Montrose & W Clay. Staff is very friendly and helpful if you have questions. The menu is lengthy so lots of options for everyone. I’ve only met one hostess when I’ve gone and she was very sweet. I never have leftovers to take 🤘
Please visit. This Thai food is delicious
Only ordered delivery but it’s great every time. Delicious Pad See Ew
Less than average flavor in their food.
Best Tai in Houston without doubt.
Low key ambiance amazing food.
I ordered takeout online for my first time eating here. I got the drunken noodles and they were phenomenal. The food was ready quick and was so hot and fresh. I can’t wait to try more things from here.
The food here is so yummy! Must try the thai kiss appetizer with sweet chili sauce 😋 my bf always gets the yellow chicken curry. I like to switch it up and I've never been disappointed. Choose your own spice level (4 is perfect imo)
One of the worst Thai places I've tried. The food itself looked okay but the flavors were not there. It just tasted like a cheap panda express with Thai seasoning. The ingredients could have been better(the chicken looked like it was dried before cooking as it was shriveled up). I gave it two stars as it's not a place I would return to.
This is absolutely the best restaurant I can afford to eat at. They have so many fresh veggies on hand, one of my favorites is Mango fish with fresh mango and a veggie sauce on a generous helping of deep fried ocean fish, less than $15. Large menu with great variation of dishes. Very informal.
We had a great experience here! We ordered the Thai Street Pad Thai and Thai Street Pad See Ew and thought they were both delicious and well-priced for the amount of food. On top of that, the staff was incredibly friendly and were not only very understanding when our car broke down in the parking lot, but actually went out of their way to help us get it fixed up enough to take it to the shop. Thank you Khun Kay! We'll definitely be back!
Best Thai food in Houston. Excellent quality and service. Again, the food quality is HIGH. Its a better place for pick up and fast eating. Do not expect fine-dinning or entertaining atmosphere.
Can’t repeat enough: FOOD IS GREAT AND VARIED with unbelievable taste and quality.
So happy a new Sechuan restaurant has moved into the neighborhood. A pretty restaurant-well decorated, nice atmosphere with lots of great booth seating and very nice wait staff. I had the Mapo Tofu and Eggplant and garlic. Both delicious. Large portions. Looking forward to putting this spot on my bi-weekly rotation.
Normal Thai food. Lot of vegetarian choices.
FYI: The take-out menu prices are higher than the in-person menu prices.
The pineapple curry here is delicious and my favorite. Thai tea was great. The crunchy chicken was so good and spicy.
Can't go wrong with their Chicken Pad Thai... it's our Sunday ritual.
This is now one of only TWO places in Houston that have set a ridiculously high standard for fried rice.
I had never heard of “black fried rice” before but I decided to give it a try. Now I can’t eat anything else.
Excellent portions, and plenty of egg and shrimp.
Their egg rolls are a nice size and very, very delicious. The meat to veggie ratio is perfect.
10/10, 5 stars, and highly recommended.
This place was neat & clean. I tried Chicken Pad Thai & Shrimp Pad Thai, both were equally tasty. Price was reasonable.
Love the food, and the workers are nice. Highly recommend. Dine in if you can.
Food was good. Read review before coming about the food being bland but that was not true in my case. I will have to come back and try different things. I highly recommend the scallion pancakes and the cheese rolls. Ordered and got my food super fast. Plenty of parking. There's both indoor and outdoor seating.
The pad see ew on the website looked quite authentic so I was excited to try, but what I got seemed far from it. I had the chicken pad see ew, extremely bland and thought I had the wrong food because it was extremely light in color and did not seem to have any sauce and the chicken was extremely dry and hard to eat.
Counter service, friendly staff, big portions. DELICIOUS. I just wish the chairs were comfier but it makes for fast lunch turnover so I get it.
khun kay noodles!
I love Thai food. Khun Kay Thai is far from where I live and work, but it's the best Thai food in Houston. I wish I was closer to the restaurant.
Panang Curry with roasted duck, just fantastic!
I loved my ToFu PadThai and Thai Tea.
Excellent like always
Awesome 😎
Good food sold here
Chicken Pad Thai? That was a joke 🤷🏻♂️
I've been coming to this place for almost 8 years and the food never disappoints! Good sized portions and they have great seasonal items!
pink pad tai baby draw you own conclusiom
I ordered pad thai and it's above average, volume is great, I can't finish at once. But it's a little bit dark when I entered the restaurant and I got bitten by mosquito 10 minutes while waited for my meal to take out.
Yummy spicy food
Some of the best and quick Thai food that I have had. They also have daily specials which offer a generous variety. The prices are very fair and the staff are super friendly.
I've enjoyed everything I've ordered at Khun Kay, and the staff has always been very helpful. I visit about once per month, but try to go more often. I always order tom yum soup and spring rolls, and often a noodle dish. Thank you to Khun Kay staff. See you again soon.
The food here is delicious! The flavor is everything and I definitely will be coming back. I ordered the Tom Kha (coconut soup), Pad Thai and Asian Wings. All so very good!!
The food here was great! Here you order and pay at the counter first, then you are given a number to put on your table and the staff brings the food out to you. My friend and I loved the fish cake appetizer, and also enjoyed our entrees, the Khun Kay noodles as well as the basil eggplant with pork. The thing I wish could have gone better was the fact that our sticky mango dessert was brought to our table before any of the other items came. By the time we ate, and were finishing up the food, the dessert had sit for a bit too long. My friend had also ordered a Thai iced tea which I had to go to the counter (second time) and request since all the food had come. It's almost like the drink and dessert should have been swapped in terms of what order they came. The food I enjoyed though and portions were reasonably large enough to share between two people. There was quite a lot of people for a Thursday night. I would probably come back and try their other dishes.
The pad see ew was okay, not fantastic. The online ordering system, however, was terrible. I placed my order and promptly got two emails, one that my order was confirmed and another that the food was being prepared. Then I never heard from the restaurant. I finally went by over an hour later since the restaurant was about to close and I still hadn't gotten a call or email saying my food was ready. When I arrived, my food was sitting on the counter and only 4 other people were in the restaurant. I can't help but wonder if my food would have been dumped in the trash if I had not come to claim it, since no one made an effort to contact me. If I ever come back, it will definitely be dine-in only
Hands down the best Thai in the area. The curry and the spicy chicken pad Thai is delicious.
The Food here is ALWAYS AMAZING!!
One of our favs are the Chicken Dumplings..I believe 6 come to an order and it’s nothing for us to like order 5 or 6 orders of them before leaving!..lol. There’s a homemade Thai Soy Sauce that comes with them (that’s wonderful!) I combine that with their chili oil & red pepper flakes..Omgosh, so good, but be aware,it’s not for the faint of heart..lol..I would just not add as much of chili oil to the Thai Soy Sauce if you are not that brave 😂
Another AMAZING dish that they created at this restaurant is Jalapeño Fried Rice made with “Black Rice”…OMGOSH, an absolutely amazing dish that we top off with Siracha Sauce.
Almost every time I order this I have people stop and ask me what I am eating bcz they say it looks really good! The Black Rice is more of a deep purple in color, combined with the colors of the Jalepenos is just a vision of culinary delight, no joke! 👍🏻
I get mine with Chicken
Not only is the food amazing, but the owners are AMAZINGLY Friendly and very nice people! Once they start to recognize you, The owner and his wife always ask “how you’re doing” and have smiles on their faces! 😁
Thank you,
Chris
P.S. The Jalapeño Fried Rice ordered with Black Rice is a separate dish from their “Black Fried Rice”, which is a GREAT dish also, I just prefer The Jalapeño Fried Rice!
I had never heard of Black Rice before eating here, it’s a healthier and yet tasty option that you must try in a Fried Dish for sure!! Enjoy! 💥
Good food.
Ordered 5 items from here on Grubhub. Noodles were overcooked. Rice was bland.
Hmm not sure what I ate but as far from Thai as you can get. Green curry was white and tasteless, chicken satay and peanut sauce a complete waste of time. Shame had to give it a try the search continues.
Simple, tasty and well proportion, first time, more of a home cooked...
a complete wastebasket owner and staff. kitchen disgrace
Small non- impressive eatery with excellent food! Probably a well kept secret with it's patrons for it was shared with me through word of mouth. I wasn't expecting to be really impressed but was excitedly surprised and impressed with the quality and taste! It was excellent! Will definitely eat here more often!
Good food. If you are expecting very hot, take hot sauce from the table.
05/22 update: reduced rating. Maybe different chef? Gai ka prow was not "flaming spicy" level, had oodles of string beans, bell peppers and carrots and not enough basil. Disappointed.
---
One of the better gai ka prow I've tasted. Unlike most other restaurants, they do use minced chicken for this dish. But expect the gravy version not the Bangkok staple of wok fried dry version - but flavors were there regardless. Pad Thai was very good.
I ordered pad thai and egg rolls from this place on uber eats and was severely disappointed in the food that I received. The pad thai had very little to no flavor and no spice at all even though I asked for it to be medium spicy. The shrimp that was in the pad thai was also over cooked and rubbery. The egg rolls were decent and it had a very mushy filling.
Terrible service… In Houston weather I had an empty glass of water and no refill. Petiful!
Although the staff was so nice, the food was SO BLAND, it actually tasted like NOTHING! And, we got THREE VERY DIFFERENT DISHES !
Their website and menu looks like it’s an authentic Thai restaurant with much variety. But, LIKE ITS INTERIOR, IT IS ULTIMATELY A FAST- FOOD RESTAURANT MINUS the FLAVOR!
If you are looking for flavor, go to JACK-in-the-Box and order their egg rolls! They are way better!
Want real Thai food? Go to a real Thai restaurant, like Thai Pepper or Mint Thai!
I ONLY TAKE TIME TO POST REVIEWS WHEN MY EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN SO FAR FROM NORMAL - either above average or (as in this case) SO BELOW AVERAGE.
Love the red curry and their special s are great.
Great service and great food
Nice little place but maybe split an order between two people
Ordered the spiciest level, yet dishes still mainly tasted sugary and missed flavor complexity.
We popped in on a whim for lunch last week. Seafood Pad Thai was delicious, except for the 'seafood'. I would order it again, but with chicken, or maybe tofu. The seafood tasted like it came out of one of those big frozen bags of mixed seafood you see at the grocery; not fresh. But what would you expect for $12?! The eggplant dish was also tasty, but the skin was tough and chewy. The tall non-asian white guy who took our order (it's walk-up) was not very friendly; not rude, really, but pretty close! We'll give it another try sometime when we are in the Montrose, but I wouldn't go out of my way.
Place makes a really good red curry lunch special
After looking at the reviews, thought it of giving it a shot as I really enjoy good Thai food. Ordered one of the house specialities - Crispy chicken pad Thai with spice level of 4. It wasn't spicy at all infact it was sweet. The chicken is dry as done and pretty sure it has been fired multiple times. Will not recommend.
Medium heat means no spice. Over priced for what it is: mediocre
Great food. Atmosphere is okay. Fast Service
Great food! Friendly service.
This has been my go-to Thai place for years. Unfortunately, something has changed in the kitchen. The food is inconsistent, missing sauces, highly salty and just not the Khun Kay of old. I'll be finding a new favorite.
Ordered the pad kee mao with level 3 spiciness. Gotta be the blandest pad kee mao I've ever had and was not spicy AT ALL.
My go to Thai food spot! Cheap and tasty ! Have been going here for the last 10 years! Great food. Love the promptness and the quality of food. Always get the yellow curry and/or pad thai!
Was a little skeptical when we arrived to this place around 1pm in a Sunday there was nobody there, and the rest of the restaurants around seemed full. Luckily we continued in it was really good and they had a lot of variety. I had yellow curry and my wife had Thai style pork with egg noodles. After we got there the place did end up getting pretty busy with what seemed like regulars. I'll definitely be returning when I feel like thai good next
The best Thai food in Houston hands down. They have the real Thai food and know how to cook it. They let you choose degree of spice you like and let me tell you 4 or 5 is out of this world hot FYI
