The Elegant Side of Thai Food.
24 years serving The Best Thai food in NE Portland. Cater to wedding, offices, open house and special event. Dine-in, Take out and delivery.
the food tasted amazing but absolutely WRECKED my stomach. I got a tofu dish gluten free so I know it wasnt a meat issue that hurt my guts - i will assume it wasnt actually gluten free because i have been on the toilet for two days. huge bummer as the food tasted great, but if things are labeled gluten free they should be made gluten free. RIP to my guts :(
I was hesitant about a Thai place open as late as Sweet Basil, but when I arrived to pick up my food the restaurant was easy to find, well lit, and the person at the front desk was very friendly. He helped me pick up my order, asked if I needed anything additional, and gave me an appropriate amount of utensils and napkins which I was thankful for. My order was well packed, and my spicy cauliflower pad thai was DELICIOUS. I was so thrilled with my food that I almost went back the very next day. I will be coming back here to eat the next time I am in town ❤️
Now I love Thai food out of a lot of Thai food places I’ve been to this is probably the most “MID” food by far. It has no real flavor. The only reason why I would go to this place is because it’s the only restaurant open past 10 PM practically to 12. That’s the only thing that makes it a good place.
everything we ordered was super yummy and we had great customer service. amazing late night spot! definitely recommend and will come again :)
Absolutely phenomenal Thai! Some of the best I've ever had. Get the mango curry from the specials menu, you won't regret it! Pumpkin curry my husband got was also delicious but the mango was my favorite. Flavorful, hearty, great amount of meat/veggies/fruit, good portion sizes, and the char on the pork loin added extra flavor. Our server was sweet as well. Very happy to have this place close by and will definitely return!

My husband and I love that place we drove 50 minutes just to enjoy the delicious food 100% recommended

Maybe it's the penjamin but I swear to GOD that's the best Pad Thai I've ever had
Possibly the most reliable Thai food in Portland. We have eaten here on many occasions. We come back because it’s good. It’s like visiting a food court in Bangkok. Prices recently increased a little which sucks but they seem to be maintaining the portion sizes and quality.
mid
Yum! Even better than we remember from last year.
we come here before every broadway show we go to because it's so good and the staff is tremendous.
Delicious!
Always a wonderful experience! Amazing Thai Food. Really Really Cute restaurant, it feels like a Portland classic with an interior that makes you feel like your at grandmas. And a patio that makes you wanna drink. Been coming here for years for the Grilled Eggplant with tofu.
We had takeout and it was amazing! Thank you for the extra sauce on my crispy Basil chicken!
Service is excellent and very helpful. Every dish I have eaten is delicious, portions generous and prices very reasonable.
Food good. Service horrible.
I got the pad see ew, it was good but not great. I've had much better for the same price.
Got DoorDash from this place and it was the single worst takeout that I’ve eaten in Portland. The pad kee mao had SAND DRY chicken and old, rubbery, nasty noodles. This genuinely tasted like they shoveled the scraps from several other dishes into a bowl 45 mins after they cooked any of it. For $17 that is an absolutely criminal rip off.
Ordered Pa Nang curry to go and found a massive hair in the food.
Food 3/5, hair -2 = 1/5
My omg crab rolls weren’t cooked, the pad Thai was not good with very little flavor also just greasy. The crab Rangoons were ok.
Best red curry I have ever had. This place is amazing.
This restaurant has delicious Thai food. Good portions at a fair price. We love this place!
The Beef Mussaman curry was amazing. Mussaman is already my favorite curry, and theirs was top notch in every way but especially the beef itself. It was loaded with large portions of tender slow cooked beef. I'm used getting more like thinly sliced tougher meat, this was tender and generously sized. The curry was delicious as well. We also tried the mango curry, it was fantastic too.
Lovely cozy Thai restaurant. Delicious vegan food. Have 2 menus regular and vegetarian.
lovely new outdoor patio

Ordered fried rice, and it was super soft sticky, mushy and disgusting with lots of water underneath rice. This wasn’t anywhere close to fried rice, chicken was tasteless. The whole food was very ridiculous to eat if I don’t wanna throw up. I ended up trashing the food and promised myself never to throw my money away again, by going to this restaurant. 🙄
Consistently delicious!
I normally don’t write reviews. But - This was the most egregious & appalling Pad See Ew I have EVER had in my life. Dry, white, sauceless noodles with no flavor. You should be ashamed. I hadn’t eaten all day until 6PM and this was still bad.
hot pad see ew came with zero spice or flavor. spring rolls without sauce. wow, could it be less impressive ? not really. NEXT.
This is the best Thai food I've found so far. I have been trying different places very often, and Sweet Basil has become my favorite and my go to. The staff is friendly and the food is excellent. I will be visiting here regularly. They have late night hours as well which is great for me because I work nights.
They will always forget something, including sauce for rangoons or plasticware
The food I would give a solid 3 star. I’m giving it a 1 star because we ordered over the phone and realized after we got home from picking it up they added a $10 late night gratuity without any notification. Also the $22 sampler plate was definitely not worthy of that price, chewy wontons, super dry tofu, mushy starchy rice with our entree….not a happy customer. With all the many selections of Thai in this town this customer won’t go be coming back.
We got takeout from here. Unfortunately the drunken noodles was about as bland as I've ever tasted. My friend got pad Thai and he said it was average.
Pad See Ew had 3 small pcs of broccoli, 2 pcs of carrot, 2 pcs of chicken. and a ton of sprouts. Otherwise it was just dry noodles stuck together in chunks. Barely edible. Worst thai I’ve ever had.
We happened upon Sweet Basil when we were traveling through Portland 10 years ago. We were in town again tonight and decided to try it again. It was amazing just like it was 10 years ago. Service was great and our food came quickly and well priced. Of the many thai restaurants we have eaten over the years, Sweet Basil remains one of the best.
Also, if you can't handle spicy, consider going very mild.
Ordered the avocado curry dish and edamame through Postmates. Had to throw out the entire avocado as it had brown spots all over it. Also had to throw out the entire box of edamame, as they were discolored (brown and yellow) and mushy.
so so so delicious
The food is great. They are able to accommodate meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. Ambiance is good. Gotta love a restaurant that inexplicably has 3 different names.
Dissappointed! I've had lunch there many times and have always enjoyed the food. I ordered takeout/delivery and when my Pad Thai arrived the noodles had been burnt, not browned, but had a noticeable burnt flavor.
Unfortunately the salad rolls (Fresh Wrapped on the menu) did not have basil, mint nor cilantro as advertised. Just lettuce. 🙁
Great Thai food. Consistently excellent.
Absolutely Delicious
DELICIOUS food, via takeout!! Truly the best shrimp and gai satay I've ever had! I mean it!!
BUT, while my wife ordered "very mild" in terms of heat (the very LEAST that can be specified), it was almost too hot for her to enjoy. And I ordered "mild" but I must have received the "very mild" as I could not detect any heat. (Both the pic I took of my online order details and the paper receipt that came with the food bag had our "heat" specified correctly, so I think they mistakenly switched our "heat" requests. )
That said, again, the food was so good we'll definitely try them again!
Excellent food, Great service and wonderful atmosphere. Love it all!
A little more expensive than other Thai restaurants, yet the portions are very large. Excellent quality meals.
I lived in Asia for years and came to this place on a recommendation. Their drinks are great, which aren’t Thai, but pricey. I wanted to love this place and it felt like everything we ordered was fried or covered in peanut butter “peanut sauce.” I understand making adjustment s for American palates, but this is some of the most tin authentic Thai I’ve ever eaten. I honestly want to rate it less, but the family running it had great, helpful and quick service. The recipes need to be adjusted to suit a Thai taste.
Strong drinks, great outdoor deck, great food, helpful staff. This place is great!
I had the king salmon curry. It was amazing. Rich flavors, crisp veggies, perfect rice. My wife had the pad thai and loved it.
The only downside is the food wasn’t super pretty, but stick it in your mouth and who cares!
overcooked noodles, bland, & dry
Excellent food and service! Check it out!!
They fill their cups completely filled with ice, only giving you 1/4 a beverage for full price and charge for refills.
Their crispy chicken is mostly just hard fried bread. (little to no meat) and it had bones in the chicken.
Completely not worth the cost versus a fast food chain like Panda Express unfortunately.....
Always so happy to order from here. We usually order through delivery apps due to Covid. Today I decided to place an order and pick it up myself. Such a cute little building—my order was ready to go upon arrival and so delicious. 😻😻😻
I ordered Sweet Basil for a small backyard gathering. We love the take-out options, and decided to try their catering options (larger portions and serving dishes). The food was excellent, it arrived hot and well-packaged. Our guests absolutely loved it. The prices were reasonable and the service was outstanding. I would highly recommend Sweet Basil for their catering options.
I love their Tom yum noodle soup (with egg noodle)! I go to this place maybe once a month. I should try different meals but always order Tom yum noodle because it’s sooo good! Soup is slavery, spicy. And they’re always nice to me! Makes me so happy! I just moved to SF and I already miss this place....
Very good food. Fast service.
Good flavors but very small portions. I ordered an eggplant dish and literally got one piece of eggplant. Bye bye sweet basil
this is my favorite Thai place in portland! good flavors and generous portions! also i really like how many spicy options they have! seriously if you’re having trouble figuring out which Thai place to order from pick this one! i’ve tried a lot of places over the years and this one is my go to every time!
The nicest people ever and amazing food.
They really make you feel loved as a guest.
You want spicy!? They go spicy, or not, if that's your jam.
Great selection in a old home. They have the main restaurant upstairs and the main bar downstairs.
Cool atmosphere and helpful staff, if you have lots of questions like myself.
AMAZING LEGIT FOOD
A coworker ordered and brought in to work tonight. I tried a seafood dish that was amazing. I'm not sure which one it is, but it was very flavorful, aromatic, and spicy. May be too spicy for many...but just the way I like it. Scallops were tender, lots of seafood prawns (prawns, mussels, squid, etc). Had with the black rice, which was yummy too. Best Thai dish I have had in Oregon!
Well I was hopeful that I would be ratting more stars. But the food was just a big dissapointment. This is my second visit within 3 weeks. 1st time was just ok. This last visit went from ok to poor..
Green curry with tofu and veggies.
Tofu fresh rolls.
And a friend got pad see eww with shrimp
I requested the curry thai hot plus one and it was just sweet and overly sweet..so sweet that I couldnt finish eating it. Plus it was mostly tofu I paid extra for more veggies and their was hardly any veggies. My friend really disliked his shrimp pad see eww. Said the veggies had absolutely no flavor....well he said the whole dish had no flavor. And the rice noodles were all stuck together. He ended up throwing most of it in the garbage bin
Also very pricey $38 for two entrees and one starter.
It's too bad. Because the ladies in the front of the restaurant were all pleasant and friendly
The two stars is for the food.
I ordered delivery yesterday and the food was ordered to be medium heat. The food that I recieved was very hot to thai hot. My girlfriend and I both got sick the next day from how spicy the food was. We are experienced with thai food and always order a level 3 - 4. This restaruant made it way too hot. Be very discerning about how much heat you order you food.
Neighborhood Thai cuisine that’s comforting, tasty and family-owned. Love the variety and the great service. Highly recommended!
Sweet jesus, Sweet Basil. That was GOOD. Lots of vegan options, fantastic peanut sauce.
By far the worst Pad Thai I’ve ever had. It was so dry and flavorless. The noodles were a mass of hardened, cement like goo...
I’m amazed that this place charges $13.50 for this abomination of a meal. I honestly feel robbed.
The best Tom Ka soup in town
the atmosphere was amazing, it’s very authentic and delicious. my favorite dish is the pad thai. and the thai iced tea is the best in the city!
My coworker said this food would be awesome. I think it was average.
Always a delight.
Really good Thai food in an old house.
Great food and service! Can get crowded pretty quick, it's a small place.
Very good food. Great service
So many wonderful options, and they are all great. I love the Sweet Basil Pumpkin and the Ginger Chicken. Medium is pretty spicy but just hot enough. Hot is a little too much. Mild is safe for anyone.
I’ve eaten in the restaurant a few times and have had a good experience. But take out is a whole other story. They have completely messed up my order two times in a row. First time, about a month ago, I asked for a no meat fried rice with tofu, I got home and it had chicken and shrimp :( I couldn’t go back so I called and asked for a refund. They said the owner would call me for that. No call. I called next week and they said it should have been refunded. Checked, nothing. Called two days later and they said it should be up now, hung up and found nothing. I gave up at that point.
So a month later gave them another shot. Ordered online, got there and they never received the order. They made it very fast for me, I ordered pineapple tofu fried rice, same as last time. Was going to check it there but they pointed at the receipt saying it was tofu, no meat fried rice. I get home and NO tofu:( just extra pineapple:(( so all I had was a way too sweet rice dish because of all the pineapple plus raisins. Hard to eat.
I’d love a refund this time, for real.
Great food and really great service. Most thai restaurants have really good service, but Sweet Basil has always been super friendly and accommodating. Thank you for your kindness.
Pleasant, casual, great flavor!
Order three different orders. Everyone order super mild to mild. The reason for these orders is medical, not taste. We all received orders that were literally inedibly hot. Sometimes this would be hyperbole. It is not. I could not swallow, my first bite was so hot. We were charged $60. The refund offered for an inedible meal, $27. Calling the bank to stop charges.
Amazing food! Quaint & cozy setting & excellent service! I had the pineapple rice which was actually served in a pineapple! Jasmine rice, chicken, shrimp, cashews, raisens & fresh pineapple...delicious! There were so many dishes to choose from, we will definitely be back to enjoy more! Take out or delivery (thru GrubHub is also available).
I am located south of Salem and recently found Sweet Basil Thai by way of internet. Having a friend in Portland that was under the weather, I decided to have Thai delivered to her and ordered a selection of food from their menu. Total meal cost, plus Delivery Dash and tip, was about $33, which is mostly reasonable. My issue is that, upon getting into her delivered food, she found shards of metal in her noodles, presumably from a wire dish brush. Not cool. She ate VERY carefully and apparently the food was just fine otherwise, but this REALLY needs to be tightened up in the future because this could have been REALLY bad for her if she hadn't been paying attention. +3 on the food, -2 on the lack of care in putting it together.
Ordered via Caviar. Rangoon and Pot Stickers were decent, probably would have been better if they had arrived hot... Yellow Curry was thin, watery and bland. Pad See Ew had grey, un-browned beef and barely any sauce, which was flavorless anyway. Way overpriced. Maybe if you have never had Thai food before, as one reviewer boasted, you might like this; otherwise, it is pretty low on the list.
I ordered steam white rice, but I was served sticky white rice and, expected to eat it
Might have been the best pineapple fried rice I've ever had..
Great food, reasonably priced, and excellent menu!
Very nice menu & athmosphere
Best I've ever had
We missed the lunch . . . They were closing
Must
Oh my goodness, Sweet Basil Thai was AMAZING!! What good food!!! I had never eaten at a Thia restaurant before. We loved the vine covered outdoor patio and atmosphere. Our waiter was great. We loved everything we got for dinner. We look forward to coming back!! So good!!!!
Great service! Great food!
Worst Thai I’ve had in Portland. Yellow curry was watery and not seasoned at all. Had to add my spices to it. Pad Thai needed seasoning as well. It’s across the street from where I live; however, I’ll be ordering from another restaurant next time.
found an ant before the food the water tastes like chlorine but the place is beautiful writing this while spending time with my mom very beautiful
Wonderful food
Love the food, but this does Google know I've been there when I've never even gone with a smart phone?
Always great food!
Great food great service....yum
Excellent food, Awesome staff that are friendly and very welcoming. Beautiful outdoor patio, I love this restaurant.
This was the best Pad thai I’ve ever had. Fresh and spicy! I ate it so fast, I forgot all about taking a picture.
Delicious food!
Great food and decent prices. Lunch specials are worthwhile. Their hottest level of spicy food is great if you have the tolerance.
My favorite Thai place!
Some of the best thai food in Portland!
My green curry with tofu was absolutely delicious and my partner's pad thai was everything he wanted and more!
A hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant.
Definitely a Thai gem of Portland.
Wide variety and fast food preparedness makes for it to be a good staple for your Thai food needs.
Best Thai food I've had in Portland. Fresh, authentic, tasty, reasonably priced and they have plenty of Vegan choices! The staff is very friendly as well making it a wonderful dining experience. We'll definitely be back!
Their house special curry is so good!
Yummy food with beautiful presentation. Patio with grapevines and string lights in the summer season just add to the experience.
Excellent! Fresh ingredients, lovely plating. Be careful with the spice- I said medium and I should have said mild (this is not the first time I've made that mistake- my bad)
Really good Thai food, with plenty of vegetarian options. I had the house curry, and it was really tasty.
Good dishes...great service..judging from take out orders great clientel.
Friendly and cozy environment.
Decent food and service but it used to be better. On my last visit my curry was prepared with "baby" carrots, a bad omen in my book.
This is how you run a restaurant.
Possibly the best Thai food in Portland
Tried it for the first time and it was delicious. I recommend this place.
Terrible food
Never disappointed with service, food or cleanliness
