Chicken and rice for better life. Original since 2009.
So many people have told me to come here, and I have avoided it because the photos seemed lackluster. I am extremely pleased I finally gave it a shot, and I was not disappointed. It's a very basic concept, but the chicken, rice, and sauce work so well together. Outstanding meal! And the price is also great for the portion. I shared the large portion with my partner, and it felt like the perfect amount of food for two. Definitely will be coming back!
Holy sh$!@ I crushed a plate of their chicken and rice plate. I never understood the hype around Hainanese chicken up until today. This dish was so simple, and yet so well executed. The photos don't do the dish justice. I hadn't even finished my meal and I was already contemplating ordering a second helping. The sauce was packed with flavor and brings the whole dish together. Honestly, it was so satisfying.
I'll for sure be coming before before leaving Portland this weekend.
The chicken rice and the pork rice are really good.
The other reviews were correct.
This place does not have AC so it's a sauna during this heat wave.
If you sit in the booth behind the fountain pop machine it's even hotter. The heat exhaust from the fountain pop machine will be blowing into your face.
Save this place for when the weather is cooler or get takeout.
A friend took me here. The food was fresh, flavorful and pretty good! There is free tea when you dine in. I got the chicken plate and he got the pork option.
I like the ambiance of the place - it was well decorated.
Lastly - there is no service here. You pay for the food upfront and need to clear out your dishes before you leave.
you have to try this place when you visit Portland. it’s a small restaurant but it was not crowded when we were there. it could be because we went in around 3pm for lunch. the children was very delicious. the pork was nice too! the portion was good. we had 3 people in our group and we shared 2 dishes, which was just right.
Food and the seasonings were great and really fragrant. Generous portions and refreshing drinks. However, there was some tea dust/sediments settling on the bottom of the Thai iced tea.
There are a few booths and a good amount of bar seats/high tables available. You can order at the counter and seat yourself afterwards. They bring your food out, but you’ll have to bus your own table afterwards.
My go-to for every visit to Portland
Amazing food! Delicious.
Listen…I’ve eaten at a lot of places and had some amazing food. But Nong’s is top 3 favorite places to eat on this planet. The chicken and rice is simply perfect. Always my go to. If you haven’t been either as a local or visitor in Portland you’re missing out on one of the best places you can eat.
I really appreciate a place that specializes in something and does it so well. No need to have 20 different dishes on a menu. The chicken & rice plate was amazing. I will be back soon!
This food and soup healed me today. Best in town 💗
This is a small place with basically non-existent service. The chicken, which is what they serve, is basically boiled chicken. While the potions are rather large, including the vegetables, it's just not very good. It's also pricey. There are other places that are much better.
Got their tasty sauce to go. Good value and the shredded pork was delicious
Bland and soggy tofu. Needed more sauce and spice. Lime Thai Tea was great though!
Do not go to this one. Go to the one in SE it’s 100% times better food and service. Not even worth a stop by
Absolute trusted must go and staple of PDX.
The food was okay, but the bold guy there was extremely unfriendly and passive aggressive.
Rude, unwelcoming bald man does nothing but talk sarcastically to customers.
We walked in and he was rude about the placement of the menu, he was sarcastic when we asked a question about the cups and the tea. Then we BUS OUR OWN TABLE.
Had the chicken & rice and the pork & rice. It was good, but “service” was terrible and the tea was just dirty water.
Omg I have dreams about Nong's boiled chicken. Soooo good and very reasonable price for a HUGE amount of food. Highly recommend a side of peanut sauce with it and don't sleep on the free tea and chicken hearts. Will be back as often as I can!!
This was for delivery. Chicken was very dry and portions much smaller than usual.
I’ve been eating at Nong’s for many years. But this last meal at the west side location was a complete departure from my past experiences. Firstly, they got my order wrong, so more waiting while they remade my order. I had a #3 chicken with peanut sauce. The rice was not sticky at all. It’s usually cooked to perfection. The broccoli was under cooked. I’m glad I’ve had a lot of great meals so I know they can do better.
The best affordable Thai food in PDX!
Chicken was extremely dry😩 Would not recommend a friend come here expecting hainan chicken
Chicken and rice is life changing. Fast & friendly service, great prices and incredible food. Highly recommended! And also the Thai iced tea was delicious too
food was okay, but def given little quantity for what you pay. I got the large and was still hungry afterwords.
I really like Nong's but my last couple experiences have been a little off-putting.
The food is good, however the person running the counter is not very friendly. Last time was weird, as he went from laughing with the people in the back, to stone faced when he turned to me.
Also, I asked for the gluten-free option, which I know isn't truly gluten-free, but there were still a fair bit of gluten bits in my soup.
I love the shop though, and the food is usually pretty good. I'll probably try again in a couple months.
Nong, can you educate the kitchen staff on dark meat. I can't ever get although I always ask. Please teach them the dark meat requests on the ticket.
This is not the food cart location but a second restaurant location.
My only complaint...it is hot inside in the afternoon when sun reflects off the building across the street. Makes you feel like you are in Thailand. You have been warned.
Great place to dine in. Wonderful flavor and simplicity that reminds you of a home cooked meal you reminisce about when away. 10/10
The food was amazing, the service was mediocre, and it could be better. Overall, the food would bring me back the most to this place.
Holy sh$!@ I crushed a plate of their chicken and rice plate. I never understood the hype around Hainanese chicken up until today. This dish was so simple, and yet so well executed. I'll for sure be coming before before leaving Portland this weekend.
The chicken was ok but wish they had a dark meat option. The beast did not have much flavor by itself. The sauce was decent.
About 8 flies buzzed around me and landed on my water cup while sitting by the window which greatly took away from the experience. If not for that, I would have been pretty satisfied.
Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Simple Menu, Simple food, AMAZING taste.
Lived here 4 years and still find amazing spots like this. Would recommend to anyone!
Worst Khao Man Gai I ever had.. this place is overrated. The chicken is tasteless. Will not recommend and I will never go back again
Accidentally placed in order to this location. Ordered my usual super soup and kmg piset. Soup straight up tasted like water and kmg rice had no flavor. Plz save yourself a visit to this location.
Great food, but the overall experience of eating there is a little embarrassing. The guy brought my food out and asked if I had been there before and when I said no, he started to tell me how to eat it. It's chicken and rice, not some bizarre sea creature with an inpenetrable shell.
Don't let that stop you from eating there, I just think it's ok to bring the food out and ask if there's anything else you need.
Pricey $$$ Thai steamed chicken & rice joint but the taste is pretty authentic and the portions are huge (chicken, rice, soup, pickles, liver) so I’ll give it a pass. Wish they served from the entire chicken instead of only skinless white meat but then again I’m assuming it’s to cater to their mostly white clientele.
Boiled chicken and rice is sometimes nice. Pretty basic and simple food that is unlikely to upset the stomach.
A friend took me here. The food was fresh, flavorful and pretty good! There is free tea when you dine in. I got the chicken plate and he got the pork option.
I like the ambiance of the place - it was well decorated.

I had a horrible customer service experience. I struggle with hepaphobia (the fear of touch). I went in to pick up an order, and a large bald man served me.
He picked up a drink off the shelf directly in front of me, and handed it to me. There was no way to grab the cup without touching his hand. So I said "thanks but can you set it back down". He immediately became aggressive and set the drink on the counter behind, me. Then as I was reaching for the bag of food, he roughly snatched it off the shelf in front of me. Touching my hand in the process, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. Placed it on the counter behind me, and stormed off as if I'd insulted him.
That interaction made me extremely uncomfortable. It was highly unprofessional and childish. I will not be returning to this establishment.
Downtown is a mess, I don’t really feel safe around here. We tried this restaurant and the soup was wreaking a burnt garlic. Went to the other location and it was much better. I can’t believe they serve soup with burnt garlic, one of the most pungent mistakes in cooking. Did give us a refund which is much appreciated, but I highly suggest going to the other location. Seems to be safer Cleaner better area than this crap hole of downtown Portland.
you have to try this place when you visit Portland. it’s a small restaurant but it was not crowded when we were there. it could be because we went in around 3pm for lunch. the children was very delicious. the pork was nice too! the portion was good. we had 3 people in our group and we shared 2 dishes, which was just right.

Here’s how you could express that in English:
"Nong's Khao Man Gai was such a disappointment. Yesterday, I saw someone excitedly taking pictures of their food, but after tasting it, their smile disappeared—just like my own feeling of regret while eating it. What a letdown! It's funny that some people even list it as a tourist attraction, and I actually fell for it too. Haha."
A Portland staple through and through.
Chix & rice is amazing
The simplicity of Nongs food is amazing and the team working there are so wonderful. Example. I did an online order by accident to the wrong location and when I showed up at the one I wanted they just made the food for me there and called the other location and told them I picked it up here!
This place is the best.
Not worth it, the owner must to checking in this branch…..not expecting that will met service and food Thai taste in this way before. Specially I came from LA to try it .
Always great! Love the regular Kai man Gai ...makes an especially good takeout dinner.
Nong’s Khao Man Gai in downtown Portland is a gem for those craving authentic Thai street food. The star of the menu is the namesake dish, Khao Man Gai, which features tender poached chicken served over fragrant jasmine rice with a flavorful ginger-garlic sauce. The simplicity of the dish belies its depth of flavor, and the accompanying chicken broth and pickled vegetables complete the meal perfectly. The casual, no-frills atmosphere and friendly service make it a popular spot for a quick, satisfying bite.
i only order the chicken peanut but its always fire 🔥💯🤓🤞
I would highly recommend talking to your employee that was working the register/bussing tables at 1:30pm today on July 5th, 2024.
They were extremely rude when I called asking if an order was ready saying on the phone " ugh. We are too busy for that you're going to have to come in" when the orders are right there in front of him on the shelf/rack.
I came in and he was most certainly not busy, and was barely doing anything and still gave me attitude when I was being completely polite and trying to pick up the order.
He was also rude to other customers in the restaurant too, passively aggressively telling them where to put their plates when they are done with them, just because someone else left their plates there next to them.
Seriously terrible service.
Food is great. Hours are unreliable.
They have a sign on the window that says opens everyday. Well, I came here Saturday 11:30 am, apparently not
Chicken rice, sauce and the soup are tasty. My nephew said the soup remind him of his childhood. He always looked forward to the wintermelon soup. The server guy was nice and friendly to us.
Delicious but not really authentic or original. The chicken is tasteless but still ok
The rice is not much in moist of garlic or any gingers
However I still keep ordering for years. Thanks for a generous portion!
Great example of a simple menu done expertly. The chicken rice is well worth the hype, with an excellent accompanying sauce and just the right amount of spice with the included chili flakes. The chicken rice with peanut sauce is also very good. Seating is fairly limited, although there is usually a spot to sit by the time you get your food.
Always a go to place for my son and I when he’s in town. But I noticed different cooks in the back very “busy “ with their personal ( I understood their language)conversations no wonder why we waited so long for our food when they were not that many customers. The place wasn’t as clean looking as I remember it either. FYI I hadn’t eaten there in over a year… I guess a lot can change. Shame.
Cozy place with booth and bar top seating. Don’t be fooled, this simple menu packs a punch. The $15 #1 is an undeniable go-to with the juicy chicken and flavorful sauce (which they sell bottles of btw). This unassuming restaurant does showcase its roots as the notorious food cart. Went around 630 on a Sat night and there was some seating immediately available but that was during a parade, pride, timbers game, so I reckon this place typically fills up quickly. Our group also enjoyed the peanut tofu. Easy to order, eat, and self-bus.
Delicious and appreciated the minimal container for take out.
God tier poached chicken 👍🐔🔥
In the heart of the city lies a culinary gem where khao man gai reigns supreme, each tender bite a symphony of succulent chicken and fragrant, jasmine-kissed rice. The humble broth, a whisper of ginger and garlic, envelops the senses, weaving warmth and comfort into every spoonful. Here, the simplicity of tradition dances with the elegance of flavor, crafting an unforgettable feast for the soul
pork and rice is great. Chicken and rice is ok.
I grew up in Singapore eating Chicken Rice as a staple. This is as close as I've found chicken rice in the US that tastes like home!! It's not easy to make the rice that fragrant...Nong's absolutely crushed it! Thanks for bringing a taste of south east asia to Portland.
👍👍👍
食物非常一般,不知道怎么被吹到天上去的,服务等于没有,上菜顺序全看服务员心情….唯一的优点就是便宜
Absolutely DELICIOUS!!!
Khao Man Gai...deeeeeeeelicious!!! Service....outstanding!!! Atmosphere...funky!!!
Just go to the SE one.
Awesome chicken rice and draft Singha beer to match.
The menu here is simple but delicious. I ordered the pork and rice which was rich and flavourful. It came with a variety of veggies and a citrusy vinegary sauce. I also got the lime Thai iced tea which was *very* limey and sweet. The restaurant itself is small and it might be hard to seat a big group here but it's a great cozy spot for small groups or on your own.
10/10 food!!! We got delivery so I don’t know about the vibes but the food is amazing. The soup isn’t loaded with salt and heaviness and will actually have you feeling better if you’re sick.
Lives up to the hype!
All the hype and finally got here 11:30 on Saturday and they didn’t have any pork and rice available until later in the day. Will have to find time somehow and travel to the other location that hopefully keeps its specials on hand for purchase…
Come on down to Thai Flavor town! Cannot go wrong with any dishes (although any of the chicken dishes is definitely what first time go getters should get!) The pickled mustard greens is a perfect combo with the braised pork from Carlton farms but do expect it to be served with the fat as it's no good cooked without that love and simplicity of a home cooked meal! Walking in reminds me of the smell of my grandmother kitchen! Spicy parts are separated so the wimps can rest assured!
Just waited over 20 minutes for a delivery order. Change the estimated ready time on the apps so you don't waste people's time.
BEST FOOD IVE HAD IN Portland yet! Seriously a must try! Everything was high quality, simple ingredients yet extremely well executed! Will be back!!
Dry and flavourless boiled chicken.
I love Nong’s. Like really love Nong’s. The food is so good! And the people that work there are always so friendly and know you by name.
This was delicious. I was looking for something not too expensive, not too heavy, and this spot really ticked off all the boxes. I've been to the location on the east side but it was nice to have something downtown. It was a small location, but easy to order and unlimited hot tea. Service was great, excited to go back!
short but nice place, food was also good..
Quality of chicken and rice not the same as their other location. Service was friendly.
I stopped by Nons Kao Man Gai in the Pearl District in Portland after seeing it on multiple lists. I opted for #1, Kao Mang Gai. It was…decent…the portion was good and the chicken was nice but the dish lacked flavour even with the sauce. The bitter melon felt quite bitter rather than refreshing too. Overall, I’d give them 7.3/10
Nong's has mastered the formula of chicken, broccoli, and rice. Everything is cooked perfectly every time I come here. For what you get, the price can be a little high but ultimately what you pay for are the service, the atmosphere and the crazy consistency you get with the food. This is my go-to spot and has never let me down. Personal favorite is the Chicken Peanut. The peanut sauce is the perfect consistency.
Very disappointing visit to the Pearl District location. Rude service; chicken was very dry; skimped on the normal amount of cokes they usually serve with their signature dish. Will not be back. Their other location is friendly and the food is consistent just not the downtown restaurant.
WOW…simple, insanely flavorful and absolutely brilliant. Hands down one of my favorite meals, don’t let the simplicity scare you away or you’re missing out on a massive hidden gem. The chicken is perfectly poached, flavorful rice the ginger sauce you drizzle over is outstanding while the soup broth is wonderful.
Khao Man
I've only had the chicken and rice, so I can't comment on the other items on the menu. The dish is similar to Hainan chicken and rice but with Nong's special sauce.
It's a simple recipe that's very well executed. The rice, chicken and broth are all delicious and very well prepared and I just love the sauce. If I lived close by I would eat here very often.
This is similar to Hainanese chicken where the chicken is steamed with the rice. Here is boiled. Ordered their P2 and the portion won’t disappoint you. The brown sauce, I think it’s a combination of peanut and something else, makes the chicken flavorful. The environment was clean and cozy atmosphere. Definitely will go back!
Friendly waiter, simple, fantastic grub, nice location, good vibes.
Worthy of a return for sure! Patrons shan't be disappointed
Absolutely delicious. Was greeted instantly. Told them I wasn't from around here and wasn't sure what to get. Was told the #1 chicken and rice was the fav. It's definitely my favorite now! The spicy sauce to the side and hot soup were perfect too, and I'm not a spice person! Will definitely miss this place once I leave!
One of the best, most nourishing meals in Portland.
Second time having khao man gain, the first time I had it was a couple years ago at the food truck and it was light but flavorful. This time around everything seemed pretty flavorless. Chicken was tender and moist but needed some more flavors. Broth was bland and the chicken skin was a bit underwhelming. The pepper sauce saved the dish as it added some kick and much needed lift in flavor. We ordered the peanut sauce since everyone raves about it but it was just a really expensive satay sauce and nothing to write home about.
Same great food as the original location. Having only 1 FOH person at Sunday lunch left a bit to be desired. So did the extra charge for the chicken sauce fwiw.
I'm from Thailand. I come here when I'm homesick.
Love, love, love!!! Had the chicken peanut and was yummy!!! Definitely will be a repeat customer!
Nong’s provided the catering for my wife and I’d wedding rehearsal dinner. The team from Nong’s delivered the order and set everything up for us. We received rave reviews on all of the food! Highly recommend their services to anyone looking to feed a large group. We fed a huge meal to about 50 people for less than $1000.
Convenient location for take out. The chicken is consistently delicious and staff are friendly. This was the first time getting take out from this location, but I love have the option of either location now.
Overhyped. Came as it was recommended by a few websites and food guides but honestly not even in the top 10 chicken rice I’ve had (and I’ve had quite a lot) but maybe this is the best for Portland. Would not recommend if you’re from out of town and have decent chicken rice back home.
It’s not bad but nothing special. Got peanut rice and original khao man gai. They did not include the khao man gai sauce with my order which was funny, isn’t that the whole point
Nong's brings back the familiar flavors of neighborhood Thai restaurants, creating a nostalgic dining experience. The ambiance is delightfully casual and comfortable. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. Both of their locations are excellent choices. The staff is kind and friendly.
One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. The Khao Man Gai is delicious!
Nothing will heal you more than Nong’s chicken and rice. 10/10.
As someone grew up in Asia, I would like to say if you ever tasted any chicken rice in any Asian cities (Hong Kong, Singapore, South-east China), you'll know how bad this one is. The chicken meat, broth, and rice are not juicy and tasteless.
Picture 1 is from this store. Picture 2 is from the Internet of an authentic chicken rice in Asia. The rice should be covered by chicken both and flavor. The juice and oil of chicken meat should be preserved.
Of course there could be different ways of making a dish, but unfortunately, this one doesn't taste good at all.
This location has less sitting compared to the one in SE location. Parking is harder to find here. There is street parking garage which both cost money.
A simple menu that offers some customizing like (white meat vs dark meat), add chicken skin. There is also tofu and vegetarian options. The soup is my favorite part of the meal. It is light and flavorful.
Like the other location, you orde up front and bus your own tables. Water and tea is self served.
the Thai iced tea was very weak and watery.
Tiny spot with some self service and AMAZING FOOD!!! I could eat this every day and be satisfied. Don't leave Portland without trying it.
Great food, reasonably priced. I got the #1 chicken + rice + soup and a spicy sauce. Highly recommend.
For amazing chicken and rice Thai style this is the spot. The food was so good I forgot to take a photo before devouring it. The (item #1) chicken (dark meat with skin) was poached to perfection and the rice and soup complimented it very well. The chicken skin side is also worth a try, not very salty at all. Love the vibe, and the staff was super friendly. Spices provided are hot, so beware before putting too much on, there is a kick.
This location is open early and closes early. Best for those looking to grab a quick bite before the airport, which is what I did. Definitely coming back for more next time I am in Portland!
Nong's is Everthing the world needs right now. Let's stop fighting and enjoy some delicious poached chicken, rice, soup and zesty sauce with cucumber and coriander! I would eat this every day if I could. It makes me so happy and warm. Nong is a goddess.
So much YUM!
My girlfriend recommend this restaurant to me since I was visiting Portland. Her and her family always eat here when they visit, so I had to try it out.
It did not disappoint. The popular Chicken and rice dish is a must eat and that sauce to so flavourful. I ended up buying a bottle to bring home with me.
If you've never had a Thai style Chicken and Rice, you have to try it here.
Don't let the small space keep you away from this gem! Chicken and rice might sound basic, but the flavours infused in each bite are immense! I could eat this every day of the year.
My go-to comfort food. Great staff and delicious food.
The chicken and rice are life changing, so good, but the service at this location was awful. I ordered online, but my order was not ready, and I had to wait 20 min. I went to this location because the website said they had curbside service and I had my dogs with me. I called when I arrived and asked where the curbside spots were. They said they were busy and hung up on me. So rude! I called back and asked if my order was ready, and he claimed the ticket didn't print out even though I received a text confirmation. I finally found parking and went in. It was not that busy. I spent $100 and tipped 20%, I expect to be treated like you appreciate my business. The food was excellent. Two days earlier, I picked up the same order from the SE Portland location, and it was the complete opposite experience. Everyone was very nice and helpful, food was ready when I arrived. Parking is an issue at both locations. SE portland location is best if you want to dine in. I introduced the chicken and rice to 4 family members and they absolutely loved it! It's all about the sauce. Be sure to buy a bottle to take home, you won't regret it! Yummy!
This business has issues with service animals and with allowing people with service animals to use the restroom. When I said I was going to leave a negative review to warn others of such actions these employees had they quickly chased after me and let me use the restroom. Very unkind, and illegal to at first deny me the use of the restroom
Always delicious. Fast, friendly service.
Nong's Khao Man Gai offers a simple yet satisfying menu with a focus on chicken dishes. While there aren't many options to choose from, the food is flavorful and well-prepared. One thing to note is that all chicken dishes are served without skin, which is sold separately.
The staff is efficient and polite, but the service lacks any standout features or personalized touches. Overall, Nong's Khao Man Gai is a good spot for a quick and tasty meal, but don't expect any exceptional experiences beyond that.
I don’t know what the deal is, food is generally good but they’ve messed up my order the last 5 times in a row. I order the same thing every time, large with brown rice and liver. They forget the liver every time. They forget the sauce often. They give me the wrong kind of rice. I’ve had to go back several times..never had a problem with the SE location.I’m friendly and I always tip in spite of the mishaps...not sure what the problem is. Hope they get it together, staff is nice.
Ordered the chicken and rice, placed the order and we got lucky that a table cleared up before our food was ready.
This would be my go to lunch spot every week if I lived in Portland, perfect for the cold weather.
It was a perfect amount of food for my partner but I would definitely get the large order next time.
Growing up in Singapore - I love chicken rice. This is one of the few places in the US that has the same sort of quality of chicken rice that you can get at a hawker in South East Asia. What you get here takes me right back to my childhood. So thank you for that!
