This was our first experience in the new location and it was quite different. The last time we ate at Langbaan it was an A+ meal that we looked forward to returning. Yesterday's meal was a C, at best. The meal was uninspiring, lacked creativity and simply average. If I'm going to spend $400 on a meal, at the very least I want to leave excited and having positive memories of the experience. I know it's difficult to own a successful restaurant in Portland and I really wish my feedback was much different.

My family and I were lucky enough to grab a table for their NYE special dinner celebration. A few of us had frequented their original space, but this was all our first time to the new location. Coming here is a treat, and this NYE menu was even more so.

First off, I will say the new space is amazing. The new open concept kitchen and swanky bar area are fantastic. The service is still top-notch, and the food is innovative yet nods to tradition. We loved all the dishes, especially the added A5 wagyu Ribeye for New Years. The flavors were tantalizing, and the spiciness had just enough kick.

You are in for a real culinary treat if you are ever lucky enough to get a reservation here. Make sure to put this on your list as one of the top PDX restaurants to experience n 2025.

One of the best restaurants in NW Portland 🙌

This James Beard award winner gem is a must try for Thai food lovers, especially if you want to try unique tastes composition and burst of flavors in mouth. Wine pairing was right on point. They renew their menu every 2 months so I’ll be back! I recommend reserving chef’s counter to get the full experience of kitchen magic.

Superb.

Diner Review №10

So good. Top 5 in Portland for sure, and that's hard to do in this city. The food was so flavorful and creative. The wine pairing was really nice. The service was super attentive and helpful. The inside was beautiful, the colors of the interior gave a good ambience. Would love to try their different seasonal menus.

I share similar sentiments on Langbaan to the review that Aramis provided below, and would note that Langbaan feels a very “casual” prix fixe dining experience.

In summary, food was good, but not great, and service / ambiance / elegance did not match the price tag of our meal (table of 4, ~$250 a person for cocktails, wine & added Wagyu option). November 2024 menu.

The first 4 dishes were phenomenal but quality / delight factor went down from there. The main entree was disappointing with the smoked trout relish being described as having similar flavors to a “Chicago chili dog”, served with lackluster fermented chicken, rice, curry, and vegetable wraps, all unremarkable. A few dishes were plated sloppily, which even our server commented. Our wagyu option (which was tiny) was served cold and its preparation felt like a disservice to the quality of the cut. Desert was fine but forgettable. We left hungry!

All tables are served each course at the same time, which perhaps contributed to issues mentioned above.

Ultimately the best dishes at Laangban just echoed flavors of my favorite Thai takeaway spots in PDX… which left me wondering why I spent so much for curry and rice. With so many other impressive prix fixe offerings in Portland to try, I would not recommend Langbaan.

THE BEST restaurant in the Pacific Northwest.

Diner Review №15

Good was delicious, staff very friendly! It was a great experience. I will definitely make this a regular spot!

Diner Review №16

Really amazing tasting menu. Wine pairings were also awesome.

Diner Review №17

Absolutely incredible dining experience at Laangban. Loved to have been able to experience Southern Thailand flavor in this fine dining restaurant. The vibes here are ultra cool and every member of the staff was so knowledgeable about the dishes and so friendly that we felt really comfortable eating here. You will leave full!! And each dish packed so much flavor. Fan favorites for us were the fried soft shell crab salad, pork dumplings, and shrimp relish.
Will definitely have to come back in the future

I had an incredible time. Langbaan serves up unpretentious hospitality and complex, beautifully tasty flavours. Their collective attention to detail, plating, pacing, flatware, flavours, ambiance, and descriptions are all beautiful. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Chef Pui at the bar- it was awesome to hear his feedback and info about certain dishes and ingredients. Andrew and Joe took turns serving and sharing about the food; they were attentive, friendly, and engaging. Truly a stunning meal that I'll remember. Thank you, again. I'll be back with my family soon!

We finally got here after attempting to get a reservation for months. It was so worth the effort. First, the service was exceptional, from the 4 servers attending us. Each bite exploded with flavor! So many courses, but you are never overwhelmed by feeling stuffed. Try to try again to get into this amazing dining experience.

Diner Review №27

An amazing dining experience. Menu is fixed so you are in for a culinary experience

Diner Review №28

It’s good but not great. The menu started out really flavorful and unique until we got to entrees. Green curry, rice, pork belly were all a bit standard. One main was a combination of beef, salted egg, and rhubarb and tasted as weird as you would guess. Serving sizes were small and we left hungry. A tad over priced. A good night overall but I wouldn’t go back.

This surely isn’t the best restaurant in America. We were told to show up early for our reservation so we did. They say they have bar seating but they don’t & have no way to accommodate you. They could not seat us & instead suggested we wait outside next to the dumpsters right outside the front door. Then we found out they only do one serving so we had to wait 45 minutes for everyone else to show up & be seated. It took 10 minutes for them to touch our table once we were seated. This is like a 10 table restaurant. The waitress was pretentious & rude. It took another 15 minutes for us to get our drinks. We did the wine pairing with the meal. Some of the wines were gross. The server said she won’t drink the wine served with the entree. It tasted like cat piss. It took 25 minutes for us to receive our second dish after the oysters. The cuddlefish soup was nasty. It was like watered down soy sauce. The catfish lettuce wrap was gross & way too fishy. They brought the desert wine cold for the last course then it sat for 15 minutes while we waited for the actual desert. When the sticky rice desert came it was disgusting. It was my 40th birthday dinner & it sucked. Don’t go here.

Diner Review №32

I hate to say it, but Langbaan just isn't worth it. And before you think I'm one of those people who just doesn't like spending a pretty penny on a meal, I just dropped $800 and $700 per person at the Alchemist and Geranium in Copenhagen, and had no issue doing so because those were absolutely worth it! At what came to about $160 per person, Langbaan just doesn't deliver the Michelin level food you would expect (per my other reviews, I've dined at 169 Michelin restaurants around the world, so hopefully am speaking from a point of comparison).

Of 11 dishes served, only 1 (the scallop tart) was truly great. A few others were slightly above average (the cod), others average, and the rest outright misses (the shrimp was overcooked, the wagyu steak of all things was tough/chewy - a big no no, the soup was far too sour). Aside from the food itself, there also were a few oddities that I had issues with:

1) The server introduces the restaurant by saying "we have a new menu as of Friday, which means you are one of the first people in America to try it." If you are going to say something like this (which comes off as pretentious - I've never heard such a thing at those 169 Michelins I've been to), you have to deliver, otherwise it really comes off the wrong way.

2) The meal is advertised as 11 courses, but 4 of those are brought out at one time as part of the main course, and it really is just 1 course with multiple parts, not 4 separate courses (unless you want to count the rice as a course, or the duck curry sauce that you put on said rice). Again, I haven't seen something like this done elsewhere, so found it a bit misleading.

3) The servers were all really nice and friendly, so no issue there, though they would frequently introduce dishes by saying "What I love most about this dish is..." Because multiple of them did this, you could tell it was required/scripted, which takes away from the genuineness of such statements.

4) For all the pretentiousness, they don't replace plates/utensils after each course, there is no AC, and when we arrived, we had to stand outside (this was during a recent heat wave of >100 degrees) until after our start time because the hostess said "they weren't ready."

I really wanted to love Langbaan (I wouldn't have taken my mother and sister there if I didn't), and per many of my other reviews, I don't have an issue giving high marks when deserved. But this missed on so many levels that I get the feeling the high reviews from other patrons are from those who don't eat this level of meal a lot (so of course it is the "best" meal of their life). I hope Langbaan improves. And hey, maybe it was just an off night. But to me, it wasn't worth the $160.

Were thrilled to snag a table here the month after it won the James Beard award for #1 restaurant, but I am at a loss as to why this place received such an honor. This is great Thai food to be sure, but I have had better meals in Portland for less $, let alone New York or LA. Definitely not worth the price and is in a very seedy area (two drug addicts smoking fentanyl directly across the street) made us wish we had taken an Uber, not driven our car. The interior is bascialy an extension of the bar so if you are looking for elegance, this is not the place. If you want the insta brag then perhaps worth it, but temper your expectations.

Not impressed limited menu. We were told only appetizers available

Diner Review №36

Wow. Excellent food and excellent service. Worth the price and a fun experience in fine dining.

Diner Review №37

My mom and I ate here for my 23rd birthday on June 7th 2024. Each dish was gorgeous and extremely flavorful. My favorite was the cuddle fish ink soup. The service was incredible and the staff were so knowledgeable about every single dish. I’d say the service matched the quality of the menu completely. The only complaint I have was Uber having a different address on their app for LangBaan. Just make sure you verify that because we were nearly late for our dinner due to it. I’d 100% dine here again and I extremely recommend it to anyone willing to be adventurous with their palate.

Diner Review №38

Wanted to try a James Beard winner. We had the fixed menu with wine pairing. Pretty good but expect with tip to be looking at ~$250 per person. I think Thai eaters would be aghast at the price. Worth the experience but would I eat there again? Probably not.

Diner Review №39

Impressive from start to finish. Had the honor of attending what I believe was their 10th anny celebration this evening and…just…wow. Easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The only other meal I’ve had in Portland that could rival this was at the now closed Castagna. We also had the privilege of chatting with both the head and visiting chefs (gotta try Kalaya if ever in Philly!!), who made us feel…special. Thanks for a great night!

Place was absolutely incredible food. Definitely worth the time and investment to hold a reservation. We actually felt pretty full with the amount of food they bring. Drinks were on the spot as well to complement the entire experience. I felt very welcomed by the host and food explained with great detail. Expect a two hour experience which probably why they charge the resy reservation so much. But only true foodies would take the risk.

Diner Review №46

Hands down probably my favorite restaurant in Portland. It's right up there with Nodoguro. Menu is frequently changing. Pictures I posted were for a collaboration with Mister Jiu's in SF and Camphor in LA. Reservations can be difficult to obtain, but not as bad pre-Covid. It used to be a 6 month wait-list but now you can get it same month. I can't even describe how amazing the food is here. Every bite is either sweet, sour, funky, or a combination of all 3. The food speaks about itself.

Diner Review №52

Amazing set course meal. Get ready for flavor explosions in your mouth. We gushed at every bite. One dish was terrible, tasting like a latrine. But the rest was phenomenal!

Diner Review №53

First of all, this is not a typical dining experience. They are working very hard to provide a creative, upscale, and authentic Thai food experience that is on another level from what you can get on a regular basis. The flavors are not tailored to an American palate.

It is also quite expensive, one of the more expensive restaurants I have eaten at. The food is very good and the experience is unique, but be warned it is extremely expensive. Our bill came to almost 500 dollars for 2 people.

I feel like it's also worth noting that some of the food is very spicy. Thai food is spicy, so this is a good thing, but be ready. This is a tasting menu, so you can't really substitute or order other things if you can't eat spicy food.

Lastly, I was somewhat disappointed in the wine pairing. The cocktails here are exceptional, though, so next time, I would try those for the money you would spend on the wine pairing. Just my two cents, but if you prefer wine with dinner, get the wine pairing.

Langbaan 💫 3.5 stars

A special tasting menu at select times inside Phucket Cafe. Inspired by Issan

Let me start by saying everything on the menu was good but the main dishes didn’t really agree with my palate so for the price I’ll take Phucket Cafe. The appetizers and desserts I would fight a pack of wild Yorkies for on a daily basis! Service, atmosphere and portions were perfect.

Kanom Krock (scallops in lemongrass coconut cream) is something I’ve never experienced but wish I could every day of my life. Simply amazing

Rice Khao Lam (sticky rice pudding with strawberries) was the perfect blend of savory and sweet and added a refreshing end to a perfectly portioned meal.

Also they were so accommodating for food allergies (you HAVE to let them know a few days in advance)

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (and a half)
Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Atmosphere ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

5 stars all around! The amount of love, identity, thought and detail that go into curating the dining experience that is Langbaan, is a unique and very special gastronomic adventure. From the Kanin Krak (scallop), Tom Prape (salmon), Gang Pai (brisket in cha om leaf curry) to the Rice Khao Lam (sticky rice pudding + fixins), your tastebuds are in for a treat that takes dining to an entire new level, another world and culture of flavor! Plus, they really care about the visuals - they made beets look like blood! March was the month highlighting Isaan, the chef’s hometown in Northern Thailand, we really get a taste of his childhood, very nostalgic.

I look forward to the month where the menu is unapologetically Thai! I’m talking bile, blood, tripe, and all of the authenticity that makes Thai cuisine so bold and flavorful. I appreciate how thoughtful the chefs are when designing the menu. I encourage customers to be open to the Thai food scene, in all its forms!! I have no doubt that Langbaan will always put heart and soul into their menu. Thank you to the entire staff for their hospitality and for an exceptional dining experience for my birthday and anniversary!

Diner Review №60

If you want to go to a family friend’s house for an intimate, authentic Thai dinner with fun ingredients and presentation look no further. The food was beyond amazing and everything had such depth of flavor. The broths alone stole the show. Everything was fresh and balanced, and it was informative learning from the staff about regional thai cuisine.

Diner Review №61

The first three appetizers were tasty and interesting, but then everything went down hill. There was a disgusting green soup/broth that smelled like sewage full of fatty brisket. It overwhelmed every other dish on the table. Servers were on point but kind of long winded and cheesy with food stories.

Diner Review №62

We enjoyed a fixed menu filled with great attention to detail in a very comfortable space. Outside the amazing service the highlights were the soup, scallops, and the Mochi dessert. A few items didn't really stand out. The crab and pork croquettes were dry and seemed overcooked, the oysters lacked any meat, and we were disappointed with the sticky rice as it was low on flavor and the rice was dry, lacking sticky or sweetness. The cocktail menu left us wanting a little, too but we'll chalk that up to preference. We both prefer dryer cocktails. We ended up with some great wine pairings!

Diner Review №63

Food and team were amazing. They should not have the last 2 chairs at bar used, had to wear coats all night and too close to staff coming and going.

Diner Review №64

台餐吃出高级感,普通贝类吃到海鲜原味却不腥,多汁不咸口,真的服了!

Diner Review №65

This is probably one of the best value when it comes to tasting menu. The food was absolutely amazing. Out of the 12ish dishes we had, my boyfriend and I both agreed that other than 2 of them we’d rate 3 stars, the rest were 5 stars. This is our 2nd tasting menu experience in a week. The other one (won’t mention restaurant name here but it’s in my other review) was terrible comparing to Langbaan. We will definitely go back. Already reserved Phuket Cafe for next week.

Diner Review №66

A complete culinary experience, this is one of Portland’s greatest restaurants.

Diner Review №69

This place was incredible from the thoughtful reservation recommendations for dining with a newborn/infant to the actual seating where the folks at Lang Baan gave us a table to accommodate a stroller (or a carrier) tucked away where nursing would not be disruptive to other guests. The food was out of this world as were the drinks. The penicillin should not be passed up! Thank you to Lang Baan for making fine dining accessible to a new young family!! 😍😍😍

Diner Review №70

This place came highly recommended by several different friends and coworkers, and did not disappoint!

I scored a late reservation for our anniversary (planned a month in advance) and we were greeted with smiles and a complementary glass of bubbles each.

Menu is prix fixe so they seat everyone around the same time. There were a few servers rotating and they explained each course as they brought it. Food was delicious, each dish leaving you wanting more of it! Our favorite was the scallop, which is apparently served with most of their rotating menus (changes every 2 months ish). I could’ve done without the Jook (like a congee) but was still good! They also do their best to accommodate dietary preferences but you do have to request this when you make the reservation, they confirm with an email about a week before your reservation. Keep in mind this is Thai food so peanuts, coconut, seafood are all a part of the draw!

Lighting was dark but really left room for the conversation, and we never felt rushed. If you are there to enjoy your date(s), then I recommend requesting a table seating, but the bar looked fun and there was also a section for people to sit and observe the food being made!

Service was superb, and they deserve the automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill! We drink a lot of water and the refills came without us needing to flag them down.

Parking may be limited. Show up slightly early to check in, they don’t have much room to have people wait inside though so heads up.

Overall this was a wonderful experience, we paid about $360 for the two of us which included the add on of the oysters (10000000% recommend), and the tip!

For real, this place is legit the best restaurant for us in the entire Portland. So much flavor. The portion is pretty good too and a good variety of different dishes to try. delicious experience + friendly and helpful bartender (Molly)

the replacements for people who have a shellfish allergy like me were delicious - i heard that the regular food was also delicious

they replaced almost everything for me, even things with just a touch of shellfish like oyster sauce

the drinks were also quite unique

Diner Review №80

I want to start by saying the food was very good. My favorites were the starters/ bites and the desserts were delicious. However the good food did not compensate for the other things that made the experience unpleasant. 1) they emailed us about food allergies and preferences but when we provided this info they said they couldn’t make an subs. 2) When we arrived we were seated at a table where it was freezing cold because of the front door opening and closing throughout the entire evening. They provided a heater on the table but it didn’t help with the cold wind hitting our legs and food - which would get cold soon after being served. This seat should not exist and it’s clear they are aware that the wind is an issue. 3) The bathrooms look like truck stops toilets and were outside in a gross hallway.
These are not acceptable things when chalking up $150 a person on a tasting menu. The food should be good but so should the experience. And this one was unpleasant despite the tasty food.

Diner Review №81

Wow!! The flavors were bursting in every bite. If you enjoy Thai food, definitely try this place… its on a whole new level.

Diner Review №83

Food and service was EXCELLENT and truly one of a kind, however im not set or certain I'd ever recommend this place due to the cost. Yes, the food was amazing but not sure it was worth the cost. I think if you're thinking about going though and have extra money to splurge then sure, why not- however due to the cost I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to a couple or group of friends. I am however excited to come back and try phucket cafe! Also, I'm not sure how friendly the menu may be to vegetarians or vegans, but I'm sure they may have some solutions

Diner Review №84

This place was incredible !! My husband and I had the best date night last night. Our servers, Andrew and Patrick , were awesome! We sat at the bar for our pre fixed meal. We were blown away. Our service was top notch, the wine pairings left us speechless and the food was insane ..in the best way! Neither of us eat mushrooms and the chef kindly accommodated us. The ambiance was such a vibe! I loved that this restaurant had all ages as guests last night. As we looked around everyone had smiles on their faces enjoying this experience.

I loved that we were fine dining and there was no stuffiness . We cannot wait to go back next month for the new menu.

In a city full of amazing restaurants, it's hard to stand out, but this place always done. IMO one of the few restaurants worth the hype and price tag. The staff is notably exceptional with attentive, knowledgeable service that is always on point. Outrageaously beautiful, delicious food that wows from start to finish

Diner Review №86

One of the three best restaurants in Portland. Perhaps the best Thai place in the country. Menu changes every ~2 months and is always a 10/10 experience. 1000 flavors packed into snacks, soup, salad, main, and dessert.

Diner Review №87

Diner Review №88

Wonderful experience. The food was delicious from appetizers to dessert.

Diner Review №89

Exquisite Thai food. Cafe by day and chefs tasting menu on the weekends. Delicious rotating chef menu every few months. Each dish is thoughtfully prepared, with such great flavour combinations.

Diner Review №90

Love this place so much! Just went for the first time and will absolutely be going back. Such a fun experience with the entire restaurant enjoying the same dish from the tasting menu at the same time. The food is incredible and thoughtfully presented, the wine pairing is an absolute must, and the staff enhance the experience with their passionate descriptions of each plate and pour. They navigated a power outage in the middle of our meal seamlessly and generously. Can’t wait to return!

Diner Review №91

Went with hubby for the tasting menu. Overall dishes were good with a couple standouts (softshell crab with crab paste hollandaise and the dessert - the pastry chef gets an A+). One of the dishes was rather bad: the jackfruit-tilapia was over salted and one-note in spice, lacking any brightness.
Unfortunately, the experience can be added to the long list of wildly overpriced tasting menus the city has to offer. $350 for an above average Thai meal. Wouldn't recommend.

Diner Review №92

My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. We were incredibly impressed by our experience. We sat at the chefs table and everyone who greeted us was extremely friendly and wished us a happy anniversary. They even gave us some complimentary prosecco which was a nice touch and really appreciated. When we saw the menu we were so excited and thinking, do we really get all of that?? We chose to add the wagyu option since it was a special occasion and I'm so glad we did. Best steak I've ever had, hands down. Honestly, everything we had was absolutely incredible. Some of the dishes were definitely spicy but I don't mind that and felt that it wasn't in such a way that overpowered the amazing flavors. We enjoyed some cocktails as well and had great, attentive service throughout the entire 2 hour long meal. It was a wonderful time and I would absolutely love to come back here some day. Yes it was pricey, but I felt that it was worth it due to the amount of dishes we got to try, the high quality, service, atmosphere (we really enjoyed sitting at the chefs table) and just the overall experience. Forgot to take many photos because we were too busy enjoying the meal! Also thank you to our servers whose names I wish I could remember but it was definitely a little information overload with all the amazing food descriptions they provided. They did a wonderful job.

Diner Review №94

This is undoubtedly the best restaurant I’ve been to in at least 6 years. We did a cocktail each, then the tasting menu with paired wine. The highlight dishes for this month were the two starting snacks (the scallop cup and the shrimp leaf) and the pork curry. Pictured are two other dishes we had, a dessert and a soft shell crab salad dish.

Overall outstanding. The price matches the experience - two people gratuity included - $494.

Diner Review №95

Amazing food, great experience. One of the few fine dining establishments I’ve been to that is worth this kind of price. Scallops were the highlight along with the taro cake dessert. The main course was on the spicier end, and may be too much for some, so be careful. Service was attentive and helpful

Diner Review №96

I like all the starters. They were phenomenal and quite creative. The main dishes were a little off because I expected something more than just the traditional Thai foods. Don’t get me wrong, they were still good. However, the price should be reconsidered. I went to Michelin Stared restaurant and still cost less.

All the drinks are light and tasty so you can enjoy your foods while not being too drunk.

Diner Review №100

We had been to langbaan a few year ago and we’re blown away by the food and experience. This was our first time back and the sparkle just wasn’t there anymore.

Food: The meal started with two dishes that we had enjoyed back in 2019, which felt surprising that they were still serving those same dishes. One of those dishes is super heavy in coconut milk, and this was soon followed by a soup that is also heavy in coconut milk. This progression didn’t work and made a nice soup significantly less enjoyable.

The rest of the food just never really sparkled or was interesting like other meals we’ve had (both here in the past and around town). I also really struggled with some dishes being so ice cold that it was unpleasant (oyster, melon dessert).

I’m wondering if it’s been awhile since the chefs have experienced the whole food progression themselves because it just didn’t seem to have a flow, in my opinion.

Service: Both of the women who were working were extremely nice and knowledgeable. For a high end experience there were some misses. They didn’t clear the dirty plates after one of our courses, and didn’t bring silverware for our last dessert. Not a big deal, but for a high end experience it is worth noting. The whole experience felt kind of weird when I could hear the server giving the exact same food speal down to the seemingly off the cuff remarks to the table next to us. It’s all just a bit over rehersed.

We won’t be back but the experience we had at the old location still goes down in our top dining experiences!

Diner Review №101

Pros:
Probably the fastest tasting experience we have had which is a huge pro for me. The food was delicious. For nut allergies, they make you a separate dish that's similar. The staff was all very friendly and knowledgeable about each dish. Loved every dish they gave us. So it's hard to pick a favorite and they change the menu so chances are you would have a slightly different experience when you go food wise.

Cons:
Corkage fee is on the high end and so is the price for similar restaurants/experiences.
Have done quite a few tasting experiences now at different restaurants and this was definitely on the high end of all of them. The only reason I'd rate this a 4/5 is for the price. If that doesn't bother you then it's a 5/5.

The tasting menu started off promisingly, with an array of exquisite and inventive dishes that delighted the palate. However, as the meal progressed, the momentum began to wane, and the main course failed to live up to the earlier culinary wonders. Despite the initial excitement, the flavors and presentation fell short, leaving a lingering sense of longing for more enchanting and satisfying creations. The experience left me craving the wow factor that had initially captured my imagination.

Wonderful dining experience and worth the drive from Seattle! They just changed their menu for the season and everything was so good. I ordered the A5 Miyazaki supplement and the meat was up to snuff!

Went here on a double date night with friends. The food was delicious and unique, especially if you enjoy spicier food (which by the way you don’t get to choose the menu). It’s a preset menu. Staff was friendly and space was nice.

Diner Review №109

If you live in Portland, you’re quite lucky! If you don’t, book a trip now and get a reservation here. It’s worth traveling for.

Great experience, great staff, would definitely go back. I think it definitely elevated the Padee experience, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost difference. If Padee was a 7/8, this is a 8/9. The April menu starts and ends strong.

Overall, Langbaan is a fantastic spot for anyone looking to indulge in creative and delicious Thai cuisine in a fine dining setting. The atmosphere is lively. The staff at Langbaan is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They are passionate about the food and drink offerings and are more than happy to guide you through the menu and make recommendations. That said, it is a bit difficult to find a parking spot in the area.

We dined here in March 2023 while they were serving a northern Thailand inspired menu. Every course presented a unique adventure into the flavors and textures of the region through thoughtfully prepared ingredients of exceptional quality. The wine pairing was on point. Service was impeccable. Honestly we could not have been more please. Exceeded our expectations. We would not hesitate to go all in on this place again.

Diner Review №116

One of the best tasting menus I've ever experienced. Many dishes are grounded in "traditional" Thai dishes but have enough of a twist to make them unique. Everything was full of delicious flavor. The service is also fantastic. Very fast and accommodating. Love that they change the menu every eight weeks!

My wife and i sat at the chefs counter and loved our experience! It was our first time at the new location and it definitely didn't disappoint!

The only thing I did not like, is that the place is very small we were super close to another 2 couples. The food and the service is awesome 👍

Diner Review №126

What an amazing meal and experience! First time here and absolutely loved it! Food was great, staff was extremely friendly, and the kitchen staff operated like a well-oiled machine. We'll definitely go back a d highly recommend, just book in advance. Reservations fill fast! Hope you enjoy the photos. They were taken at the "Chef's Table".

Diner Review №127

The most enjoyable meal I’ve had in my life.

There might have been some better atmospheres - we sat at the bar after all,

But the food was just an exhibit of sheer culinary skill and imagination. Out of the (9?) dishes that were served, I can honestly say only 2 of them weren’t out of this world. And those were still pretty good too.

Exceptional service, Culinary creativity, and I didn’t leave hungry (which is rare for this type of meal).

Diner Review №128

We did the preset course dinner and enjoyed the food. One dish was a bit too spicy for me, (I can tolerate mild spice) but it was fine for my husband (he can tolerate spicy food well). The last dessert, the one with tofu, tasted a bit weird to us, we were not sure about the sourness. Last but not least, the portion is a bit on the smaller end. I was expecting one dish per person but most courses, we share the same plate. Overall, a good experience, good food, and great service so mostly will return.

Diner Review №129

Worth the wait! The staff is super friendly and explains every dish in its entirety. Make sure to get a reservation in advance. You won't be sorry.

Diner Review №130

If I spend this much it better be some of the best food I've ever had & in this case it was courses 2 and 4, the scallop with coconut and lime in a rice cup & the black cod soup - both absolutely stunning. The desserts were outstanding as well, and the lamb curry, and the oxtail. Top 5 ever for me with a 21/20 score.. just behind Normandie for my fav restaurant in Portland but only because Normandie is half the price

Diner Review №131

The staff was nice but we were disappointed with our meal. 😔 the excitement kept going down with each course. Everything looks pretty but did not meet our expectations with taste. Almost everything was salty. We tried to finish as much as we could due to the expensive price but really regret it. We did not feel good after leaving. Our taste buds are messed up from all the salt, and we had upset stomachs. When one of the staff members asked which course was our favorite so far, I decided to let her know everything was really salty. Her response was that Thai food is really salty, and it's something you need to have a taste for. I'm Asian, and I have tried many different foods. I do not mind the funky stuff such as fermented and whatnot. What we were served was not "Thai salty." We debated on leaving a tip because it was so disappointing, but the staff was friendly, so our total was just under $300, and that's with us getting a drink each. If you want to experience a course meal, then give it a shot, but it's not a place that I'd want to come back to. I feel really ripped off. Keep in mind it's Thai inspired food, so don't expect to get actual Thai food. I really wish I could get a refund. That's how disappointed I was. With that amount I could have gone to a really nice restaurant instead. The menu does change, so maybe we came at the wrong time.

“Langbaan,” the Thai word for ‘back of the house’, is an intimate dining room tucked beautifully in the space with Phuket Café . For a long time now I had tried getting reservations and was actually lucky to get one for my birthday dinner . Reservations open up a month in advance and fill up fast due to limited seating and timings or because the food is phenomenal . Each month, the revolving prix fixe menu features, anything but typical Thai “street food” highlighting the flavors and cuisines of Thailand and this month the focused on the Muslim communities in Thailand . Its an 11 course dinner and the menu mostly has 1-2 bite courses, but by the time you are done you would be discreetly loosening your pant buttons .
The menu changes seasonally so I wont get into the details of that but I must say that it blend old-school Thai dishes with modern ideas and Oregon seasonality. You might find yourself spooning into a bone marrow slathered in basil seeds or a curry that will blow your mind away . The food is truly artistic at this place . My favorite was the Dtom Som Plaa - a soup so good , I feel like they should open a restaurant just to sell that .
They had a wine pairing but we opted to get cocktails and were very pleased with our choices . The drinks complimented the food and may I add even enhanced the whole experience . The staff was knowledgeable and deserve every single bit of praise . They worked together in unison like an orchestra and one dish after the other just kept popping up on our table . Each dish comes with a story on its preparation and ingredients and the staff ensures to tell it with so much fun no matter how many times an evening they narrate it.
The only thing that I did not enjoy is the seating , If I am paying such a high price for a meal I would expect to perhaps be seated comfortably . The bar seating was just obnoxious and the door right behind us opened every 5 minutes and the cold gush of wind kind of ruined things ever so often . It had snowed in Portland that day and needles to add it was CHILLY.
Overall I would recommend this place to everyone . It truly is one of the best tasting menu restaurants in Portland and deserves every bit of hype it gets .

Second ever visit to Langbaan, but first time experience since their move into the Phuket location - still an incredible dining experience from beginning to end.

The servers were friendly and engaging, and did an excellent job of explaining what went into each dish, describing the story behind the chefs who designed it, and recommending how best to enjoy each bite.

Sitting at the chef’s table added to the experience, as we got to see the expertise, care, and teamwork that goes into the food first-hand.

They were able to accommodate dietary restrictions (lactose intolerance) and happily obliged a request to turn one of the non-alcoholic drinks into a cocktail by adding rum.

The food of course was divine. Easily one of the best meals I have ever had, and I look forward to returning to celebrate another special occasion here in future!

Diner Review №136

Hands down my favorite meal since moving to Portland a year and half ago. The service, food and drinks were all phenomenal.

My wife and I were sitting at the chefs table and she doesn’t like telling restaurants that she carries the gene that makes cilantro taste like metal; she usually just picks it off. Well after the first two courses the gentleman standing next to our table caught it and we realized her plates were coming out without any cilantro. Turns out that person was the owner- Earl Ninsom. Awesome to see the owner of so many great restaurants have a hands-on approach with his restaurants.

If you love food (especially Thai food) I can’t possibly recommend this restaurant anymore than I already am. Mark your calendar for the monthly allotment of reservations on the 15th of each month for the subsequent month’s seatings.

The food is very tasty with a modern take on northern Thai. We try their 11 course menu! They start out with appetizers, salads based, full entree, and deserts. Everything was very good with couple unique dishes that we would love to have for an a la cart. The price is a bit high though for the food since you can get some dish somewhere else with similar taste but overall recommended if you have never try Thai fine dining before.

Super creative and beautiful dishes. But the taste is just OK, most dishes have a very thick and salty flavor. Considering the atmosphere it’s absolutely overpriced.

Diner Review №149

The dishes are super creative. Plating is gorgeous. The best Thai tasting menu in town. Reserve the bar seats if you like watching how chef work.

Diner Review №150

Amazing meal! Every dish was prepared well with excellent ingredients, and wonderful layers of different tastes. The scallops and clams were definitely standouts, but every dish was well thought out and executed flawlessly. Will definitely go back!

Diner Review №151

Their seafood dumplings are probably one of the best things I’ve put in my mouth.

Diner Review №152

The food was good but the atmosphere was blah as you are sitting in the same space as Phuket Cafe and felt paying more without the exclusivity and ambiance you expect compared when they have the space in the east side. I would rather pay and eat at Phuket Cafe rather than paying tons of money for food you can get more value.

Perfectly shucked oysters. The pairings with them were amazing! Started w/ half dozen and quickly ordered the other half because they were just too good. Their small plates and cocktails are just on par with everything else. The octopus was excellent, the small shrimp plate was absolutely perfect (perfect for a sunny day like today.. very light and refreshing). Service was lovely- host was very kind and attentive. Overall an amazing experience. The price is reasonable for the quality and service you get. Look forward to coming back!

My hubby and I are adventurous eaters. This food was icky. For example, fried pickled mushrooms were rubbery and tasteless. Two different cuttlefish preparations were indistinguishable from each other. Dumplings were edible but uninteresting. We ended up throwing a lot of food away, since it wouldn't have been eaten. We won't be back.

Diner Review №173

Ugh those Hokkaido scallops in coconut cream! I will be dreaming of those for a long time. The crispy dry aged duck was also divine. My crew loved both seafood dumplings - pan friend and in soup. Honestly it was all pretty amazing and has inspired me to try my hand at tackling Thai cuisine at home!

It was one hell of a ride the entire night. I have never tasted such well conceived Thai food. The breadth, depth, sophistication and how the various ingredients come together to create the ultimate gastronomical experience. Watching the chef prepare at the counter is a must do experience. I’ve had incredible dinners from all over, but this might be my favorite food experience thus far.
