Raving about this place! First off, we are from Minnesota and have visited Portland several times. We love the diverse food scene here.

We were searching for a place for Thai and it was close to 11pm when we walked in. First off, we were confused because they have a sign with 4 Thai restaurant names on it including Kinn Kao. We weren’t sure if we were in the right place. You HAVE to be able to climb stairs in order to access the restaurant. The restaurant was well decorated, light and airy. With white table cloths and nice place settings, we felt we were in a higher end restaurant. Later on, while enjoying our meal, it felt like we were having dinner in a Thai family’s formal dining room.

I can’t say enough about the quality of the food here! We’ve traveled to Thailand and eaten all over Bangkok and Phuket over 10 days. While there, we often found ourselves enjoying the hotel restaurant food quality more so than most of what we found for sale on the street. Our American palettes are used to the rich Thai flavors we find here in the US.

We had the pad thai, duck larb salad (duck is the best protein to pick for larb because it’s a fattier meat and the umami is on point), a chicken green curry dish, and a fried trout dish with mango papaya salad. I have been looking for a really good spicy green curry like you can find on most street corners in Bangkok and it’s been tough to find stateside. This one was pretty tasty.

We were the only dine in customers this late in the evening but we saw at least 10 people come in to pick up take out! I believe they have a back patio but with it being winter and rainy, we didn’t view this area.

I had one delicious rum cocktail that put me to sleep immediately upon arriving home. You should head on into this place when you’re in the area!

We walked in around 10:30pm on a Sunday. Felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Beautifully decorated and very clean. I had to double check the location twice because we were going to Kinn Kao and the sign said Sweet Basil. The waiter made some suggestions right away and we settled on their Peek Kai chicken wings, duck larb, green curry, and their Trout with Mango Salad. All I have to say is that we have traveled many places in the US and Asia and this was probably some of the best Thai food we have had! Delicious drinks!

The best Northern Thai cuisine restaurant in Portland.

I can’t really rate the restaurant overall so I gave 4 stars for atmosphere and service bc I don’t want to be unfair. I ordered delivery but I wasn’t happy with the food at all. I love thai food so when I’m in a new city I always try something there and this wasn’t it. The food was pretty bland and very dry. I got extra hot and they pretty much just threw a bunch of chili peppers on top of my food. Disappointed because I heard good things about it. Hopefully it was just a one time thing. Either way I appreciate restaurants that keep consistency for the quality of their meals and they definitely did not. I got both their pad thai and pad kee mao. Both were bland and dry but the beef on the pad kee mao was tasty, however.

The pad Thai is the driest and most flavorless pad Thai I’ve ever had. The crab rangoons just had blobs of cream cheese in, no imitation crab or special spices just straight up blobs of cream cheese

Diner Review №11

Sold from the pumpkin tempura. Way to go Kinn Kao!

I ordered takeout through Uber Eats. I was surprised such a great restaurant was available after 11pm on a Sunday! I’m vegetarian and loved all the options they had. The popia tod were huge and crispy and still piping hot upon delivery. The veggie dumplings tasted fresh and homemade. Loved that they offer soy curls as a protein option! The noodle dishes were huge, like 2-3 decent sized portions worth. Will definitely order again.

Before the pandemic, I used to order the pad see ew from KinnKao and it was the best I’d ever had. I have ordered it twice in the last 6 months and it is just awful. The most recent time I ordered it, there were gritty bits that made it feel like I had sand in my mouth. The chicken was tough, the noodles weren’t cooked well, the veggies were raw, and there was no flavor. I do not recommend this place anymore.

Diner Review №14

They no longer go by this name and moved upstairs the old part is all boarded up

Diner Review №15

Had the northern Thai combo. Delicious! Everything was dialed. Will be back to try more northern delicacious.

Diner Review №16

Their food is super bomb every time I get their fried chicken my man talks about it all night. Sometimes we even get them twice a week. I tried to get them last night, but my Uber eats driver messed it up and I never got it. Still I would order from them again.. Hopefully I can try their actual restaurant one day.

Absolutely Love the chicken wings!

Diner Review №18

During the Covid time I ordered deliveries from Kinn Kao. Delicious Northern Thai food. My favorite is Khao soi noodle soup! Different flavors and tests from traditional Thai food and it's new experience. I want to try every single dish on the menu!

Diner Review №19

If you’re not ordering the Northern rice, you’re missing out. This spot has some serious gems on the menu and flavors you won’t find anywhere else in town.

Diner Review №20

I was very happily surprised. I love Thai food and the menu here has some really unique dishes. I'm definitely coming back for that curry sausage.

This place is the same as sweet basil thai and full moon Thai. They accidentally put the “Sweet Basil” sticker on the top of my takeout container. I keep trying to find a better place and don’t look at addresses on apps like GrubHub and DoorDash. So I accidentally order from this same place under a different name. Food is middle of the road in quality. Not awful but not great either.

Diner Review №23

Extremely meh and way overpriced for how meh it is.

Diner Review №24

We did take out//delivery, and the food arrived hot and on time.
Everything we ordered was fantastic! The pad Thai, eggplant, and papaya salad especially.
Thanks so much, we will be back!

Diner Review №25

I always crave Khao Soi when it gets hot in Portland (oddly). The heat reminds me of eating this dish in Northern Thailand when I visited. This is my go-to place for the most delicious, deep, spicy Khao Soi in town! Thank you for serving your delicious dishes to us. We don’t deserve you!

Diner Review №26

This restaurant front desk waiter is not responsible, forget my order, waste a long time , have to cancel the order .

I've been here a few times and always had a great experience. The happy hour menu has a great selection with good prices. Probably the best crab rangoon I've had in Portland.

Diner Review №30

I debated leaving a review only for the reason that I selfishly want to keep this place all to myself. I should start by saying that food is absolutely amazing...and as the menu is from northern thailand..there are many dishes that you wont see anywhere else in portland. The Fried chicken is to die for...and the khao soy is one of the best things ive ever eaten in my life. The happy hour is every single day..you can come in with a date...order 5 different dishes and two cocktails and barely break $40.
I would come here everyday if the main bartender gal Johnny worked everyday (Ive expressed this to her before lol) She is super easy to talk to, knows what shes talking about without coming off as a know it all, makes absolutely amazing cocktails, and works her butt off solo. My partner and I have watched in awe as she runs food up and downstairs, muddled delicious craft cocktails, and deals with cranky customers to boot all on her own. My only bad thing to say about the place is I'm not mistaken there are two other lady bartenders that work...we came in on a Sunday and were surprised not to see our usual bartender..the gal working acted as if we were interrupting her lunch break even though there was no one in the restaurant. She was rude and snapped at us when we were puzzled by receiving a different drink than we were used to even though we ordered the same thing. "I'm not johnny! " she said in anger. Seems to me there is a reason there is no one at the bar on the nights this girl works. Another time we came in on tuesday and the gal seemed like she never had tended bar, was on her phone the whole time, and rushed us out a half hour before they were set to close.

As long as you dont go in on Sundays or Tuesdays you will have the best experience, eat the most delicious food, sit in an adorable basement bar, and drink amazing cocktails from an absolutely delightful young lady. We love Kinn Kao! I could go on about the food all night! Just close your eyes and point at the menu and you will get something DELICIOUS! i promise!

Diner Review №35

Big happy hour food menu with really decent prices. Served from 5-7. Service was a bit slow, but only because there was only one guy running the bar downstairs. Food was delish. Try the pad Thai, Tom Kah soup, and the potstickers.

Diner Review №36

Wahoo! If you like spicy and fresh, this is the place! Amazing food, beautiful presentation and lots of crisp veggies, meat, and no meat options.

Diner Review №37

So good!! Would recommend this to everyone !!

Diner Review №38

This place isn't much to look at but the food more than makes up for the looks. Just be sure to watch out for the spice, the cooks are not at all shy about making things very spicy, which I view as a good thing. I had the pad thai with medium plus spice and I was certainly sweating afterwards.

We ate on the patio at back. I had a basil chicken dish and it was delicious. Every plate brought to our table was at beautiful as it was tasty.

Delicious food with beautiful outdoor seating upstairs.

Diner Review №43

Best thai in Portland!

Diner Review №44

Well this place definitely has adapted its menu to be for a bar rather than a restaurant, that doesn't make the menu bad. It's actually quite excellent and some of different from the Thai food you normally get.

There is more fried food rather than sauces then you would normally expect at a Thai food restaurant. We ended up ordering too much because the happy hour items were larger than we were expecting. That isn't a complaint.

Great new menu!

Great Northern Thai food. They have a great little cozy lounge space in the back of the space and a happy hour menu through 7pm.

Diner Review №49

Delicious northern Thai style street food served in a twinkly mirrored room. The loungy tables and music add to a discotheque vibe. (It's totally quiet enough for conversations though!) If you're familiar with Portland Thai food, Pok Pok is probably is probably most comparable, with the food at Kinn Kao being equally good, plentiful, and quite a bit cheaper.

Looking forward to coming back for happy hour soon!
