Fantastic Thai cuisine with large and fresh portions. The staff is very friendly and attentive, and the price is very reasonable. There is a small dining room, but takeout is also available. Everything I've had there is good, so I would recommend ordering multiple dishes and sharing family style.
Ordered Country Pad Thai and I wouldn’t come back here. Food was edible but drenched in a sauce that does not taste like pad Thai to me. Regardless, it did not taste good. Banana blossom, Thai kitchen and Lotus Thai all have much better pad Thai. Gave this 2 stars because it’s edible
Came here with my daughter and husband for lunch. I had gotten takeout from here a few years ago and the food was really good. When I went this time everything was terrible! The girl in the front was so rude, we wanted to dine in and were told we could however everything would be served in to go containers and we had to clean up after ourselves but we were already planning to dine in so we sat down, decided what to order, then we had to go up front, order, pay, then pick a table. The same girl brought the food to the table but didn't say a word, we all thanked her every time she brought something but she still never said a word, she just put everything on the table and walked away! The wonton soup was mostly just leafy greens and carrots with only 2 wontons and the whole thing was basically flavorless. The drunken noodles again has no flavor and the texture was disgusting and mushy. My husband and I both got the country style pad thai, it was supposed to be the spicy version of the dish however it was actually sweet and not much else flavor wise but somehow tasted like seafood even I got chicken and he got pork!
I spent $35 on 2 pad Thai, 1 order of pot stickers and 1 can of soda and it's was the biggest waste of money ever! We will never be back, please save your money everything was terrible!
This was once a go-to place for Thai food. But since covid, the owners seem to have given up. But I am getting ahead of myself.
I had been meaning to visit Brown Sugar for many weeks and finally got the opportunity ... I was in the area, and thought I would pick up some carry-out for dinner. It was 1:35 on a Tuesday afternoon. Their website says they are open from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM. The sign in their window also says open Tuesdays 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM. However, I found the door locked, and the lights turned off ... clearly not open.
When I got home, I wrote an email to them. I was hoping for an explanation, if not an apology, but I got no reply at all after writing twice. So not only have they lost my respect and my business, but they have earned this negative review.
So here we are ... and, as it turns out, the food reviews have gotten increasingly bad over the past few years. I guess in a way, I'm lucky they were closed, since I didn't waste any money on bad food. Still, the posted hours should be accurate and, if a company doesn't care enough to monitor and reply to emails, then they shouldn't put a "contact us" link on their website ... really two very basic concepts.
I expect this place and their other location in Lakewood (with similarly poor reviews) will be closed by the end of 2025. Based on recent reviews and my own experience, it's obvious the owners have given up and no longer care. Thankfully, there are several other excellent Thai places nearby (I recommended Raan Thai in Fairview Park, but that's another review 😉).
Average food. Not as much flavor as I was expecting. They have you pay upfront. You bus your own table. Not high on my list.
No plates, plastic silverware, no water unless you buy it, clean your own table when you finish eating. Food was not very good either. Noodles were soggy, veggies looked old or frozen. Will not get food from here or eat here again.
Extremely rude woman working at this establishment....From looking at other post I'm not the only one thinking this..... Sorry the States is so miserable for you

Bad pad thai
This is a take out place, but they do allow you to eat inside if you clean up after yourself. The food is pretty solid and the service is decent
Don't think I'll return. Ordered take out. Food was done quickly, but other than Pad Thai, the other dishes we ordered were just ok, like barely passed type of ok. There are better Thai places around.
This place used to be so good. Now the salmon pieces are bad, they give you the stem parts of broccoli, the vegetables are not as good as before.
Do not waste your money here. The food is absolutely horrid and the service is worse. I got fried rice and it came as a pile of mush, not fried, unseasoned. I fried and seasoned it when I got home but it didn't help much since the rice consistency just couldn't be saved. The workers act as if you're an inconvenience for simply existing. Not sure how they're still in business...

Some of the worst Thai food I’ve ever had. I was warned about going to this place but I was starving and it’s right across the street from me office. I felt sick almost halfway thru my pad Thai.. couldn’t even finish it. My body was telling me “something not right with this food”
Food was good. Yet I ordered pad Thai with shrimp. For 15 bucks I got 4 shrimp. You need to give a little more for 15 bucks.
I suppose I should have read the reviews prior to ordering. We had not eaten here in a while, but Thai sounded good and the last time we enjoyed ourselves. I ordered the Drunken noodles, I told my wife to get medium spicy so they wouldn't be too spicy for her... no spice at all, I mean not even any pepper. I keep a lot of hot sauce on hand at home so I was able to make do at home, but this is part of the reason I wanted thai food was for the spice. Not sure I would have gone back, but given the last several reviews I wonder if something has recently happened to the management of this place. It seriously used to be pretty good.
Mediocre food. Terrible service. Messy dining room. Twilight zone dining experience
Went today for lunch. Went a couple of years ago and it was descent. Today, it was horrible. Food was terrible and the girl who helped us was so rude. Everything was served in to-go containers. Signs on the tables read that we had to “clean up after ourselves”. We went to leave and the girl at counter started shouting at me to come back and “clean my mess”. She followed me to the door and called the kitchen staff for backup. Very bizarre experience. The ironic part was they expected us to “clean up or mess” and the place was dirty and stacked with boxes in the dining area.
FYI, this is the first time I have given a restaurant a review. Don’t recommend it. Regret leaving a tip.

Pretty mid, the chicken isn't flavored least in my case. I got Pad Thai and am used to a small family place in MI. Still good though and not too bad
Soup wasn’t hot. Only serve in takeout containers with plastic silverware. Ask for recommendations about what’s good & she tells us “I don’t eat the food so I don’t know”
Breaded chicken is more of a soup, completely soaked. Boxes everywhere in the dining room. Really want my money back and regret this choice in take out. Summer Rolls should be simple and yet are still messed up. Pot Stickers are rubbery and the soup tastes watered down. Go somewhere else.
Seaweed salad ($7), no dressing. Refused to give any. Offered wing sauce. Doordash says white sesame dressing comes w/. Drunken noodles with pork ($15) drowning in broth like sauce with ZERO flavor. I took the wing sauce & added to my entree for flavor. Noodles stuck together. Small portion compared to other establishments. Salad, appetizer, 2 coffees, & 2 entrees; $54. The best part was the coffee. Will not try again.
Food is good, service is good and atmosphere is good
Lots of food. Fresh vegetables but lacked taste. Ordered both Pine Nut chicken and Broccoli chicken. Both were bland. Salad was crisp.
Pretty horrible shrimp pad Thai. You can dine in but you do not get the dine in experience. Your food would be served in a to go container. I ordered the pad Thai and it came out salty and the noodles were limp. I asked for a little pepper flakes but it would have costed an extra $1. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but c’mon! I do not recommend this place!
One of our regular take out places. We usually order Pad Thai and tom yum soup and they are always delicious.
Went in today Feb 6, 2023. The woman that took our order and brought us our food was rude. I said thank you to her 3 times as she brought our food and she totally ignored me. We should have walked out because it’s never a good sign if the place is totally empty. The food came and it wasn’t edible. Fresh Thai food should take longer than 10 mins. And the smell that this food radiated made our stomachs turn. We couldn’t eat it. We asked for a refund and she said no. I remember coming to this place 3 years ago and it was the best Thai food. Now, I bet my bottom dollar this place will be closed within the next two years. Due to rude employees and food.
The basil fried rice is one of my favorite dishes.
The restaurant is still geared for Covid which is ok. The food wasn't as good as I remember unfortunately.
If you enjoy a meal that is sweeter than your dessert and you'd like your duck drowning in gravy then go here. Otherwise if you enjoy a really authentic Thai cuisine and delicious meal, do yourself a favor and head over to Thai spice in Westlake. Far better food!
Quick service and always delicious!
Authentic food
I ordered Country Style Pad Thai for dine in. The food was edible but not great. I can live with that as everyone makes their pad thai sauce differently even in Thailand when I trained there back in the day. The problem is the service. The server lady has extremely POOR customer service skills. I wish I didn’t tip her when I was charged before I even ate my food IN THE RESTAURANT. I had to BUY water instead of being on tap, I had to throw away my plate and plasticware, food was served on a to go container, and she never even checked up on me if I needed anything else. Why am I tipping the server for if the server isn’t serving and has zero customer service skills?!?
Ordered take out for my daughter and myself. Got it home, took two bites and threw it all out. The pad Thai was drowning in a really sweet, almost syrupy sauce. The shrimp was cooked to the point of nearly being crunchy. The sauce for the summer rolls was like a paste. Absolutely awful.
Very delicious food and great service
Delicious food and wonderful staff. Always a pleasure eating here.
First of all, website does not say they are take out only now. Strike one. Very expensive for small portions and food was not very good. Strike two. Chicken was rubbery and dry. Girl at the front desk was not friendly. Strike three. When we decided to eat out front on their patio she told us where the dumpster was in the back so we could throw out our trash ourselves. And then to top it all off, the bubbles in the bubble tea were hard and inedible. Will not be going back. Save your money, go to Thai Spice in Westlake which is less expensive and waaaay better. Make sure you read the more recent reviews. Sounds like this place used to be good and then went seriously downhill in the last year.
Quick fast and on task. Good food as well
Good food, good service
Unfortunately it was still take out only. Fortunately the food was delicious and prepared quickly. Pad se ew and larb were both excellent. Hope they open the dining room soon.
I had to compose myself to write this because I was dumbfounded. I called after getting sick eating the country style Pad Thai; I started feeling ill about halfway into it, and as it got worse, I stopped before finishing. Within 20 mins after that is when I got really sick. I called about 45 mins later, and they told me that the only way to get a refund is to go to the hospital for “proof it was from their food,” as if they analyze ingredient quantities in a sample and use mass spectrometry to track the origins of potential food poisoning. I told the manager I was not going to get a babysitter and spend the rest of the night in the ER for what, $13 dish. I told her that was an insane expectation, and if they couldn’t work with me on something so small, I would consider a negative review, but I understand what that does to a business’ rating, so I didn’t want to. She then threatened litigation if I were to post a negative review, and told me they have all my information now! As I sat there stunned, she quickly restated to go to the hospital and then hung up on me. Correct, I cannot prove with 100% certainty that I got food poisoning from here, but I can say with 100% certainty no one who actually cares about their customers would ever say these things, or threaten to use their personal information against them.
Great good
The young lady working tonight was unhelpful and rude. Didn't know the menu and gave me the wrong item. Both locations have been a disappointment.
We loved eating here in the past, but recently the quality of taste has gone down. We say we won't go back, snd almost always decide to give it another try, and fail. No consistency in flavor, sometimes really good, sometimes very bland, mind you, we are creatures of comfort, order the same dish all the time, drunken noodles and basil fried rice.
Legit
This is the second time I’ve ordered this sticky and sweet mango dessert and the mangos are not SWEET at all! What a fail! The dessert is not complete if the mangos aren’t sweet!
Got my order together for the whole family and some, called to place an order for pickup and they say they are closed at this location. This business needs to post these random changes. I went to both their website and here and no mention. Probably wont bother trying to go here again.
Always the best Pad Thai! And the fried rice is amazing, especially the next day! We usually always went to Lakewood, but have been here of late since we moved...LOVE IT! Thank you!
Got door dash and the other people got decent food. Ordered teriyaki beef and they gave like a bottle of teriyaki sauce which turned it into soup. The beef was tough, chewy and flavorless. Everything tasted like I bit into brown sugar, ick. I don't normally write reviews but this food was disgusting.
Sorry, but you can't call this food. A soupy bland nastiness.
Food was good not great. There are no substitutions which can be problematic as some of the ingredients can cause allergic reactions as well as some ingredients do not sit well with some customers. Most of the dishes are spicy of course. Portion size was regular Chinese style size but prices were way higher. Not a bad experience but for the money you can get more somewhere else. Also no dine in due to covid but even after covid the sitting area while pretty is very cramped and small.
Really good thai food and boba teas. Great option for take out. Just make sure you only park on their side of the parking lot or the dentist next door will tow your car in the 2 mins you are inside even though they are closed.
Great food and service.
Service , Service, Service.
Absolutely delicious! The Thai Bubble Tea was amazing. It had a really strong flavor but not super over powering. The tapioca pearls had a lovely texture to them. I find most places that have the tapioca pearls dont cook them ling enough so they are really gummy and extremely firm in the middle. However this was not the case here. The pearls have a nice chewy texture with minimal firmness in the center.
The Thai Custard was delicious. It had a wonderful texture and flavor. I would recommend getting it as well as the Coconut Ice Cream Delight. It was 3 scoops of soft serve homemade ice cream with a nice portion of sweet rice. The ice cream had a very fresh strong coconut flavor. The texture was very soft and refreshing.
Very good food
Good food, friendly staff. They are takeout only due to COVID.
Bad customer service lady at the front rude I paid for my food went to back didn't tell me how long of wait for meal also very rude when explaining meal this was my first time coming and I had questions and she was not helpful at all I won't be returning at all dint care how good the food is bad service.
Great food and customer service
First time going here. The lady at the front desk was a little rude. I asked about the size difference between a lunch and dinner, het response was the dinner is bigger. Funny right like i didnt know that. Spent $100 on food the least you can do is be respectful. The sushi was good, on the small side but had flavor.
This is our go to spot for Pad Thai and other Thai dishes. I’ve never eaten in the restaurant but frequently get take out and am never disappointed.
DON'T GO TO THIS LOCATION, FOOD IS HOT SERVICE IS TERRIBLE, NASTY ATTITUDES! Skip this location and go to the one in lakewood
They should romove the tails from the shrimp before serving. No one wants to dig through their Pad Thai to take shrimp tails off on their lunch break. Foods good though!
Best pad thai ever!!! The Rocky River location is always super fast!
Always so good, fast, and well-priced! I have gotten their pad thai, pad see u, siam rolls, potstickers, bubble tea and everything is amazing!!! Pad thai can feed 2 people! I recently moved here so I can only speak to their to-go orders, but they are always fast and have an easy pick up process.
The roasted duck soup is amazing. The sushi is great as well but the soup brought me back. Friendly staff.
Excellent Food, and Variety of Dishes!
The masaman curry was quite good, and my coworker really enjoyed his spicy pad Thai, but our order was given to us for take away with neither utensils nor chop sticks, and my sushi was, at best, forgettable. It was falling apart and half the nigiri wasn't even one whole slice, but two smaller parts placed atop apeice, and the ginger was oddly minced.
Go for the Thai food, skip the sushi, and make sure you get utensils if you need it.
Delicious food, fast service for takeout/Doordash and friendly staff. Our favorites are the tofu pad thai, crazy noodles, mango rolls, siam rolls and thai iced coffee. We have liked everything that we have tried so far! If you like Thai food and are debating on trying this place then just try it! You won't regret it.
This is next door to my office and sometimes I’ll go in early or stay late just to have an excuse to eat here. Not that I need an excuse because this is the best Thai food you’ll ever have on this continent.
Brown Sugar Thai knows how to make delicious tofu! It can be really difficult for me to find places that serve good tofu and BST has never disappointed.
Brown sugar is the best Thai food you can eat anywhere you go. The flavor is mouth watering. I would recommend this to anyone!! I can't believe how good there food is and there portions are way beyond normal.
Quality and service has gone way down in this restaurant. I ordered the crunchy noodle pad Thai with chicken, the chicken came out super dry and chewy almost like it was already cooked and they added it back into the noodles and reheated it. When I brought this up to the waitress she just said okay and I asked her to let them know in the back. I never heard her communicate anything to the people in the back we were the only ones in the restaurant I'm sure I would have heard something. when she came back out to clear the dishes I asked her, did you say something to the cook in the back and she said yes sometimes the chicken can become dry because the noodles are dry. I've gotten this dish here before and other places and the chicken was never dry or chewy like this. I just think they're standards are below average at this point. The food just did not taste as fresh as it used to be. And the waitress was not as friendly either she was very standoffish and took forever to come and take our order, and we were the only ones in the restaurant. This was the Rocky River location, we did drive past the Lakewood location and there was also not a soul in there so we decided not to go to that location...... Low and behold when we came to the Rocky River location it's also was ghost town but we were hungry so we stayed.
Delicious food, love this place.
Food was good My concern was that the food was not as hot as it should have been reason the plate was ice cold.Any cook worth his wieght should know better than that
Food was great!
Very sub par food and service. I ordered the chicken pad Thai and a milk bubble tea. The food came and the bubble tea was still missing. I reminded our waitress that I got a bubble tea and she assured me it was coming right out. By the time the bubble tea came I had finished my food and was not satisfied with the bland tasting pad Thai.
The waitress brought me a smoothie bubble tea and I informed her that I did not order a smoothie tea as there is a distinction on their menu. She insisted that is how they make their bubble tea and left the table. Ultimately the whole meal was average but the lack of respectable customer service was the killer. Save your money. There are much better Thai places around.
I have been here a couple of times now, both take out and dine in, the service is fantastic, the food is top notch! I love the Pad Thai as well. I will be back for more soon!
Presentation of food was good, cozy atmosphere but pad Thai was drowning in sauce
Food was decent and everything came on time but server was a little rude, almost like they didn't want to be there. Overall the food tasted on par with other Thai restaurant, the gravy for the Curries was very watery. Would recommend the drunken noodle.
It was my first time my family and I went to Brown Sugar Thai cuisine restaurant it was an awful experience the oil was old and burned my kids ordered Noodles with shrimp they served us cocktail shrimp on noodle they tossed on top of the noodles the girl was waiting on us was handling the money the phone and the orders that’s unsanitary the food had no taste @ all I don’t recommend it at all
Always fantastic!
Great cozy little place to sit and eat. Ive been coming here for years. The owners all the way down to the staff are very friendly and courteous. Always been provided quick and excellent service, with a smile!
Although, the food is not authentic, it’s good and it’s consistent. There’s something to be said about consistency these days.
This is OK Thai food but there are many outstanding Thai restaurants in the area. I go here when others are closed only.
Ok service
Thai dishes where good
Resonable prices
Good portion size
Average food. Ask before you order. Menu descriptions are confusing
This was the first time my daughter and I try Brown Sugar. We were dining in and the time was 3:30, early dinner, we were the only ones there. As soon as we walked in, the woman standing behind the desk didn’t welcome us right away. She was rude and “smileless” as someone else stated in another review. The soup was served lukewarm/room temp.
The sushi was okay. The pad Thai and mango curry were ok too, served at a decent warm temp. I feel if she was a little nicer the food would have tasted better, but that’s just me.
The thing that pushed me to rate this place at a one star was that same woman charged us $49.62 and the original bill was $41.17. I had put $0 for tip in the card and left $7 in bills on the table. When we walked out my daughter got a notification that we were charged 49.62. We went back in to let her know and she denied that’s what she charged on the card. We walked out again and called the credit card company and they comfirmed it was charged the 49.62. So I went back in and tell her this and she denies again showing me her computer shows otherwise. I told her give me back my $7 bills and we will call it a day. She rolls her eyes and goes back to talk to “management” comes back out huffs and pulls out the $7 from the cash register and proceeds to throw them down in front of me. I will not be going back to this establishment in the future. Also I remember saying “thank you” several times when we were served and not one “you’re welcome” Two thumbs down. Everyone who rated this 4 stars and up doesn’t know what good food and good service is.
Great portions and tasty food!
I hate to say this but the food from here is not good. I ordered the scorpion maki for $14 and it was 8 small pieces of sushi. The sushi tasted average but way too expensive for what was given. I ordered shumai for about $5 decent price for what was given but not flavorful. I ordered what i thought was thai bubble tea for about $4.50 and it has no boba and has a very weird taste like sour and i love thai tea. Then Tom yum soup for about $5 it was again very flavorless with only broth and mushrooms and really chewy chicken. Its more comparable to hot and sour soup than a tom yum soup which their description says both. I will never order from here again. My bill was $35 just for myself and i feel the price is not worth what was given. I highly recommend Cravings Cafe which is in the area. Ive gotten thai food from there for 2 years and Brown sugar cannot compare. All their food is way more flavorful the tom yum soup has lots of carrot, mushroom, cilantro and a beautiful broth. Their Thai tea is astronomically better. The food at Cravings is much more fresh and a better product for the price. Im really sorry but I'm not happy with the flavors that were served to me.
Very good food!
Crispy Pad Thai 👍🏿👍🏿
Great food. Cramped eating space. But, the taste and quality of the food more than makes up for any disadvantages.
Clean dining area, pleasant staff. I enjoyed the spicey chicken basil dish
The country style Pad Thai from here is so good! I’ve ordered take out from here many times and it is always hot and ready on time.
Fast and friendly service, good food (and bubble tea!) with good presentation. Cozy little place, but the doordashers have been non-stop keeping them busy. Coming back here next time we're in the area.
Amazing! I have been wanting to stop here on my way home, so glad door dash exists! 😋 So delicious and so beautifully presented! Definitely my go to spot from now on!!
Excellent restaurant for sushi and pad thai. Fast and friendly service that never disappoints!
Very good experience at this place. I absolutely enjoyed my Mango Bubble Tea and the Chicken Potstickers. I ordered sushi but it was very regular. The waitress was very nice and the service was quick and prompt. I’d be back for more bubble tea and try something other than the sushi.
Good well prepared and tasty food. Nice staff, easy parking. Highly recommended. They also serve sushi.
Food was not good. I am usually not a critic or easily disappointed, but compared to the competition this place falls short. The waitress was nice but what we ordered was pretty awful. The sushi was not fresh tasting , and what my daughter ordered was inedible. My husband seemed ok with his pad Thai and offered to share it, but I couldn't get pass the smell.
Great lunch deals!
Crazy Noodles for life!
Delicious - probably best for take out
Wonderful food and staff!
The service is wonderful, staff is very attentive. The food is delicious and the presentation is gorgeous. We had the emerald curry and teriyaki chicken and both were flavorful.
Loved this place. Doesn't look like much but the food was amazing and so delicious. The dishes were even complimented with little flowers cut out of radishes! Each flower must have taken 5 minutes to prepare!
Great prices too. I got the garden special with their peanut sauce. Excellent.
Good food, friendly people.
Great sushi!
Brown Sugar does some things well and some things... not so well. The crab rangoon is the best crab rangoon on the planet. And I'm a crab rangoon connoisseur! Their pad thai is really great if you like pad thai. Their curries are pretty darn good. But other appetizers are way too small for the price and the majority of the other dishes I've tried have watery sauce with little or no flavor. If you order the right thing, you'll have a great experience. Worth a try, but it's really hit or miss.
The food is always wonderful. They are expertz at getting the right amount of "heat" you ask for. Delicious and always service with a smile. I was thirsty and my water glass was kept topped off, I never had to ask. Highly recommended.
Wonderful service and food, esp the sushi. Yum
Country style pad Thai was delicious! Great service
Best place ever!
Slow
Nice people. Excellent food.
My preferred scene for Thai food. The place has a nice atmosphere. Similar to a place in Denver I liked.
Their sushi is great and fast and not that expensive- sushi is one of my favorite things in life- and they are a great neighborhood sushi stop- I hear their other food is good but I can't get anything but their sushi because I am a sushi crackhead- their spicy tuna and spicy salmon is not minced which i hate- it's actually thick pieces of fish 😍😍😍
Great service
Food had hair in it ,chicken was was so dry that I choked and my order was completely wrong. It was also tasteless. I'm so beyond disappointed.
Rude and annoying customer service, cold raw salads sold as appetizer in rolls and smile free server were few of the disappointing highlights of our lunch. Even curries were not cooked well and had raw coconut flavor. We have tried 10-11 Thai places around Cleveland and this will be the worst amongst food, flavor and service. Please avoid even if they give you for free.
Great Pad Thai
Brown sugar has the best crab rangoons. A must order item! As for entrees...i have only ordered the Pad Thai. It's very good, so I just continue to order that.
Very fresh and very tasty. The hot & sour soup is always a bug hit with us!!
The country pad thai was awesome!
Worst food ever!
The place is beautiful inside. The hostess is polite and welcoming. My food came out hot and fresh. The Siam rolls were delicious. The shrimp Pad Thai was a little disappointing though. It was very sweet (could use basil and maybe pepper) and the shrimp still had the tails on even though they were mixed with the noodles. So as I'm eating, I've got to grab each individual shrimp (even though there were only 5) covered in Pad Thai in order to remove the tail shells. Otherwise, this place is pretty decent. I might try something else if I go back though.
It was very good I will be dure to go again. It is spicy food heaven . All around great resteraut.
Good prices. Good size. Great service
Family of 3 with a toddler around noon was great! Server was prompt, accurate, and extremely nice. "Boxed" curry was good size and flavor, as were sushi rolls. Every previous visit (about 4 in last year) has been very equivalent experience. Prices might be considered high for some (especially because you'll want to tip well), but you definitely get what you pay for at Brown Sugar.
Super friendly staff, food is excellent!
Soups had no flavor. Nice service but would not go back
