I have drove past here 900 times and thought I should try it one day. We'll I finally did and sad I didn't sooner. Nice atmosphere, food is a bit different in coloring than some other places but don't let that fool you! I got the chicken lo mein and it was quite delicious! My son enjoyed his sushi and my mom loved her hibachi steak. Parking downtown isn't exactly a picnic but I would definitely go back.

Their Strawberry Boba Milk Tea is to die for!! Make sure you get the strawberry popping boba pearls too!! Spicy 9 has Great Vibes, restaurant is always clean and looks amazing. I ordered general tso's chicken w/ extra chicken. Most of the chicken was overcooked and dry to the point that its consistency was closer to a jerky. I'm not a particularly picky eater, especially given I walked 2 miles round trip from Davis library to get this and was starving, but I had to throw most of it out (see picture below).

I don't like beating on restaurants because I know it's a tough business, but I cannot substantiate paying $20 for something of this quality. My hope is that this was a fluke and out of the ordinary for this restaurant.

This is my first time eating here. Ordered through Uber eats. I ordered the app spicy 9 sampler and bowl of the hill.
Sampler: first, I opened the plate and opened the sauce. I noticed a hair immediately in the sauce. At this point, I would usually not eat any of the food because it grosses me out, but I unfortunately am in the hospital with my dad and just spent $42 to have two things delivered here. (Here all day) so I gave the food a chance. The crab ragoons are very interesting. I’m sure with the sauce they would have been better, but the inside was different than any other crab ragoon I have had before. Not bad but not good either. The entire sampler was pretty neutral. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t good either. (Again, we were down a sauce. And sauce can definitely change the game)
The bowl: the bowl at first glance came with a lot of food. First bite was way tastier than the sampler. Great amount of tuna. The avocado was brown. The spring mix seemed wilted. The sauce is good and sushi rice consistency was great.

I gave it a 2/5 due to the hair, wilted ingredients, and lack of flavor in the platter. I may or may not try this place again(I’d get different items)

I’m not sure when it ends, but I scored the buy one get one sushi role. The sushi was good and our waitress was so kind. My only negative was that the music was so loud I couldn’t hear anyone without yelling.

How do you forget rice on an hibachi order and then tell me it would be 20-30 minutes to get a replacement order. This is now the 4th time I’ve been wronged at the this place pretty ridiculous. Also minor note said no zucchini and still got plenty of it and little broccoli

DO NOT GET THE SUSHI. This is your last warning or else you’ll pay 18 dollars for some mediocre rolls. The best thing to get is probably the poke bowls, the drunken noodles, and the mango sticky rice. Everything else is most likely a waste of time and money including the appetizers. The service and atmosphere were pretty good though, so I do recommend it.

The prices and food quality were phenomenal. The sashimi servings were generous, and the seafood was very fresh. Plus the Maki rolls were very delicious. Will definitely be ordering here again.

Edit after having read some of the reviews:

I will say many have complained abt their gen gao or orange chicken as they’re usually very similar and yes, their version is not thickly battered and quite dry (not a lot of sauciness). That is a to be noted element and I can confirm this as well - but it’s still edible.

The orange chicken we got had a very strong orangey flavor, was dry, and a bit overcooked. If they change the batter, add more sauce it may be more typical and/or standard like you get at any Chinese takeout place.

So if that’s what you’re used to, maybe skip out on the gen gaos or orange chicken. We still ate it, it was alright.

We also did pick up so the pricing was really good. If you order from Uber eats of course you’re gonna be paying a massive premium. For us, it made sense to do pick up and as such, their pricing was really really good even accounting for leaving 10% tip.

We ordered here as a group for work. I and 3 others had general tsos which was dry, overly cooked, soggy and tasted old. The rice was almost a consistency of mash potato. Others had sesame chicken and stated the same as above. The individual with hibachi enjoyed his entree but not the rice. It was quite disappointing.

I stopped in for lunch and had the steak hibachi with fried rice and vegetables. The food and the service were both good. The restaurant is clean and well lit.

Spicy 9 Roll, Shrimp Wasabi Roll. Legend of the 10 rolls, Ultimate Salmon Roll. Not necessarily in that order.

Got takeout, 2 appetizers and 3 rolls. Everything was amazing. 5 stars.

I affectionately refer to this place as "Spicy Five." It's at best, very generously, a five out of ten. Every time I go, I have to remind myself why I don't eat here. Tonight, I sat down at the bar and the bartender promptly gave me my drink and took my order. I got my water, went to the bathroom, and then came back to see several ladies sitting at my spot, and my water was gone. The bartender looked uninterested and unconcerned, so I just moved down a couple spots and the bartender gave me a new cup and muttered something.
On to the sesame chicken, let's just say it was chewy, somewhat cold, and generally not flavor filled. Next time I have any random urging to fill my stomach and pass Spicy 9, I'll remind myself to keep driving and just go to the frozen food section of Trader Joe's.

2 and a half hours later it finally shows up. I can't totally fault the restaurant for how late it was, granted. BUT. Literally every item of the order was wrong. Which, when one of those items was a cup of TEA, is mighty friggin impressive. I was extremely excited to try a new place that had a lot of promise, but after this complete shambles of a Sunday night right before I go back to my stressful job, I will never be caught dead in this establishment, Lord Almighty help me.

I would live there if I could. considering sneaking my furniture in the back door. if I could afford it I would only eat spicy 9 three times a day. i would chose spicy nine over a trip to Japan to try sushi there. I worship the floor that spicy nine operates on. if there was a cult I would join without a second thought. even if I was allergic to seafood I would bring an epi-pen. just so l didn't have to miss out on this amazing culinary experience. the chef should be carried around so that his feet don't have to touch the dirty sidewalk. I tear up a little every time someone brings up spicy nine.

Big fan of their sushi menu! Especially the BOGO and half off online deals you can’t beat! Haven’t really explored their other menu options, but will say the dumplings and drunken noodles are another great option. I love the convenience, kindness, and solid sushi this place provides!

My partner and I have never ordered from Spicy 9. We chose 2 different sushi rolls and both ordered the Pad Thai with chicken. When I tell you this was the absolute BEST “togo” food…and best is an understatement! Usually, when you get take out by the time it gets to you it’s maybe warm and no where near as tasty as it should’ve been but our food was still hot and delicious! We will definitely be making Spicy 9 one of our new “go to” spots. Not only was the food incredible but even the delivery guy Tj was great. We ordered through the website and were updated frequently. We had our food within 30 min of ordering. All in all a damn good experience.

Avocado rolls had fish egg pieces and bit of some type of fish. It's like they rolled it on the same mat as the fish sushi. Not appetizing if you're looking for a vegan option. Still giving 4 stars because they refunded when I explained that there was meat contamination. Just check your rolls.

Restaurant Put 10 pm closing, we reached at 8:40. Denied is a table. When asked the receptionist said they close at 9. Atleast have the decency to update your timings. People travel from places to come to the restaurant.

You need to review your catering system. You put me in a bind for a major catering service by missing the main entré for my event and then trying to gaslight me into thinking I didn't order it. But the food was good. My compliments to the chef ONLY.

Was carry out so didn't dine in. Parking is a little of a pain as it's right on Franklin st. Ramen was the bomb, however be prepared the medium is very spicy, but so good.

Very good sushi, good atmosphere, great lunch deals, don't go there in a rush - food takes a minute to arrive.

Recommend : Fire Ball roll, Hawaiian roll, Carolina way, and the Tom Yum Soup, and sashimi.
Also good : shrimp wasabi roll, ultimate salmon roll, and fresh off roll - a little difficult to taste the difference between them.

Csn skip: fried gyoza.

Just above average. The appetizers left much to be desired. The calamari was rubbery and tough. The breading was too thick and lacked flavor. The sexy shrimp were better, but the wontons were slightly burnt. Thankfully the sushi and entrees were better. The bulgogi beef was very tasty. Well cooked, not too chewy, and the sauce was good. The kimchi that comes with it was good also. All of the sushi was also good quality. Service was slow. I'd go back for entrees, just skip the apps.

This place has been around for a while. Went by today around 4:30 with my wife and son. We were told that as there was a UNC/Duke game (at 6:00!) we would have to order a minimum of $25 worth of food/person and auto tip 25%. In this large restaurant about 2 or three tables were occupied, far far more tables were empty. There was no way I was going to pay for extra food I didn't want, and they refused to make any exception for this game based rule even though the game wasn't going to start for 90 minutes.
Suffice it to say that's the last time I will pass through the doors of Spicy 9. There's only like a gazillion other restaurants who want our business and won't treat us badly.

I’ve only ever gotten the sushi from here at lunch time but it’s always been delicious. The service is also great. I usually only have to wait like 10-15 minutes for my food. I also enjoy that they play a lot of my favorite k-pop songs.

Delicious food and excellent service! The sushi is on point and you gotta try the sexy shrimp! The staff was also amazing and the manager was super friendly, he greeted us as we came in and checked in on us after our food arrived. Definitely will return soon and highly recommend!

It is a great place to spend time with family and friends. The food is great, especially the Dragon roll and Thai curry which are my favorites. I have been to this place several times and always receive with good attention and friendly service from Robin. I really recommend you enjoy this place.

Noodle dishes are good. Sushi is so bland that I couldn't tell the difference between tuna rolls and salmon rolls, and it also has too much rice.

I’ve been here multiple times. Recently ordered through the phone and had an extremely rude male worker answering. It was like the guy didn’t want my business. When I asked him clarifying questions about my order, he was very unfriendly. I used to be a regular but I won’t be coming back.

Spicy 9 is great for groups big or small! We recently hosted a group for a birthday dinner, and they were awesome! Everyone was friendly, and the food came out quickly. Been here several times and it has always been a great experience. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant offers a wide variety of menu items to choose from.
My favorites are the calamari and Thai coconut soup with chicken. We also tried the sushi rolls which have buy one get one free - the amount of food is more than sufficient for sharing within a group of 3-4 people and taste amazing.
Students can get discounts on dine-in or online orders if they present their valid student IDs.

Fish was not fresh and tasted awful. When I mentioned it, they did nothing about it other than relay it to the sushi chef. They did not take it off my bill and on top of that the server was very rude. Also charged automatic gratuity for our party of 4 adults and 1 toddler.

As a college student, I have no idea where I’d be without Spicy 9. Their hibachi is phenomenal, and there’s always enough for two dinners (as broke student this is always a plus). I usually order delivery which is always prompt but when I come into the store the service and atmosphere are always great too. Don’t skip this place!

I’ve only eaten takeout but have had consistently delicious sushi rolls! Can highly recommend the Buster Sword Roll and Fresh Off the Roll.

We’ve also enjoyed the pad Thai with tofu, veggie green curry and the red curry dumplings.

Have had the bibimbap several times. It’s pretty simple, but large and filling.
