Stopped by Thai Basil in Ithaca for an early lunch on a chilly 20°F day. I ordered the Som Tum (Papaya Salad), Jungle Curry, and later switched to Green Curry. Here’s the breakdown:
✅ Papaya Salad: Fresh, vibrant, and flavorful—just the right balance of tanginess and spice. A great start to the meal!
❌ Jungle Curry: Unfortunately, this dish was far too salty for my taste. I sent it back, and the staff kindly replaced it with Green Curry.
✅ Green Curry: Creamy and aromatic with tender vegetables and chicken. It definitely redeemed the meal!
However, the dining experience overall was a bit underwhelming. The restaurant atmosphere was uncomfortably cold, making it difficult to fully enjoy the meal. Additionally, the staff were not attentive, which left me feeling overlooked during my visit.
Would I return? Perhaps for the papaya salad and green curry, but I’d hope for a warmer environment and better service next time.
This place is beautiful. Great environment.
I ordered the Pad Kee Mao & Thai Iced Tea dinner combo for $22.95. Thai Iced Tea tasted pretty authentic, not too sweet. The drunken noodles were average. They didn’t ask about the spice level, and it was just mildly spicy. I liked the variety of vegetables in it, but the green beans were a little too raw for me. With tax and tip, it was close to $30. For what you paid for, it was a little bit underwhelming.
The food was good, but my delivery order got completely messed up (did not receive what I ordered). The restaurant wasn’t very responsive to the issue either.
AMAZING THAI FOOD!!
We came to Ithaca for two nights, and the first night found Thai Basil. We loved everything we got so much that we came back for the second night because we needed to have more and try some other dishes we were interested in. Everything has exceptional flavor and is the best Thai food I’ve had in many years!! We especially loved the Pad See Yew (spelling?), Thai dumplings, ginger stir fry, khing stirfry, and the mango sticky rice!!

Ordered from here, didn't give me the food or return my call. Terrible customer service.

Friendly, fast, reliably delicious! Thai Basil is a local favorite and a great place for a good meal with friends.
Very tasty and clean. Duck was phenomenal. Healthy options available. Atmosphere is very chill
They were able to accommodate our Jain restrictions (no root veggies). They don’t use any pre made paste nor use any shrimp sauce in their vegetable curries. We had the panang curry and pineapple fried rice
Great Thai place in Ithaca. Amazing curry and fast service!
I ate Pad Thai at this restaurant. The fish sauce was quite strong. People who don't eat fish sauce should inform me. Some of the noodles were soft, some were broken, and the noodles were not connected. As for the chicken, you could barely see any chicken meat.
We had a lovely lunch here on a road trip stop in Ithaca: service was friendly and inclusive of our young child, quick, and the food was delicious!
Lovely food. Service a bit slow and not overly friendly.
Don’t order delivery. Dine in is the way to go. Service staff is phenomenal and on their hustle. Flavor is on point in the dining room. Delivery, order medium spicy and be ready to pray to the porcelain gods, double dragon style. This was inedible. I’d give it a go at a table. Never ordering delivery ever again. We suggest you follow suite.
Delicious Thai food
This gem of a restaurant is located not far from the Commons in ithaca. The service was great and the food was excellent! I will come there to eat again!
OUTSTANDING food, amazing service, and the atmosphere is indescribable. Nice warm friendly inviting and hands down the best thai food in ithaca!!!
Great food. Reasonable prices. I had the Thai Basil chicken and my wife had the panang curry shrimp. We had the Pad Thai appetizer. Highly recommend.
Food was great, one of the most authentic Thai place you’ll find around here. The service was just not it, I’m talking about where you’re scared to ask for something because the server makes faces and it feels hostile.
I think we barely beat the dinner rush tonight. I had the tofu tom yum which was just spicy enough to get me ready for the pad see aew for my main. My partner started with crab rangoon and really enjoyed it. They had the pad kee mao with chicken and I I wished I had ordered it too. Overall it was a great dinner date and we plan on returning. Definitely vegetarian friendly.
Very cozy Thai restaurant. The server was very courteous, pleasant and friendly. The service was fast and the food was good. Not as spicy as I would have thought for level 5 heat. Stop by and treat yourself to some delicious Thai cuisine and don't be afraid to strike up conversation with the server if they're not busy.
Ordered online on a Friday night with ASAP as the pickup time. I got to the restaurant about 10 minutes later and told them I was there for a pick up order. They were very busy and it looked like one person was hostess, waitressing, and handing out take out orders. After I was there for about 25 minutes, the waitress/hostess said my order was being cooked. About 20 minutes after that she asked if my order was from Grub Hub, and I told her that I ordered from their website (not Grub Hub). After a total of an HOUR in the restaurant (70 minutes after ordering online) I finally got my food. I understand that they were busy and I felt sorry for the waitress. However, I would have told them to forget it and left had I not prepaid online
The food was good. A little pricey ($48 for 2 chicken stir fry entrees and a dumplings appetizer). It is obviously a good restaurant based on how busy it was (many people came in for a table while I was waiting for my food, but they left because the wait was too long).
So, my recommendation is to give this place a try if you are in Ithaca and you see that they are not super busy (maybe a week night). But DON'T ORDER/PAY ONLINE!!! Hopefully they resolve their staffing issues and online order process.
The food was by far the best Thai food I've ever had. Hands down. I went to dinner with some friends and had the teriyaki salmon and Thai tea but we all tried one anothers dishes. So, while I was there tonight, I tried the seafood tom yum fried rice, thai spring rolls, green curry, pad see aew, mango rice, and fried ice cream. Delicious.
The only downside I see about this place is the slow service. There is one (1!!) waitress/hostess/busser. She is so overworked and doing so much by herself. She's a very nice person and I wish the owners would get her more help.
All that being said, it's a wonderful place to dine.
It was truly an enjoyable dinner. We ordered take-out, but asked if we could sit. The service was excellent and friendly. Food was very nice. I really liked the crab Rangoon.
Went in tonight and never again.
A few items of major concern:
1. 2 extremely unpleasant servers grunting at every customer who walks in and telling everyone what a “bad night” it was
2. Served my food to the wrong guest at another table; the other guest complained. The server simply picked up my dish and put it in front of me. No apology or discount to either of us.
3. No refills offered for my water and they said they don’t “have lemons?”
4. I was tabbing out and the server said, “that lady (another guest) was really bugging me…can’t she see I only have one chef.”
5. $40.00 with tip for one pad thai dish , small spring roll appetizer, and water
6. I heard a server telling a woman on the way out who was ordering, “just letting you know up front, if you order an appetizer, it will be coming with your entrees tonight.”
I was appalled. HARD PASS

Please avoid this restaurant!! They let us waited for 1.5 hours before canceling our order. The lady answering the call was rude and inappropriate, definitely the worst service we’ve had ever!!
Very attentive service...great food...not a burp...ty!
Very nice Thai restaurant with authentic basil stir fry. Served with traditional high levels of hot Thai peppers, which I enjoyed but which some may want to limit depending on personal taste. Unfortunately the neighborhood is not as nice as it once was, but there were no concerns or issues for my visit. Finally I really appreciated the inclusion of Craft beer options.
This place is beautiful. Great environment.

Bit more on expensive side than what we got.
Ordered Chicken green curry and asked for it to be spicy . It came out looking pale yellow with zero flavours . Completely bland .probably the worst Thai we ever tried ..
No flavor of green curry or lemon leaves .
Highly disappointed.
A clean and comfortable atmosphere. Appropriate portion sizes; the crab rangoon and pad kee mao are my personal recommendations
Some of the best Thai food I have had. Highly recommend the Massaman Curt with crispy duck!
Go here everytime I visit Ithaca. It's now a tradition with my best friend and I. Delicious food every time
Stopped in there for dinner and had the experience of meeting Danielle and the whole crew. They are amazingly committed to the restaurant. Danielle is friendly and a hard worker along with her team. Food was fabulous and authentic. Great place to eat.
$9 for THREE spring rolls ???? That’s insane. They weren’t even good either!
Khao Soy is a must try. Their duck based dishes are also pretty good.
Update: I went back on my recent visit to Ithaca and they apparently have new owners and hence new chefs. Khao soy is no longer on the menu (I was told that Khao soy is hard to prepare). The rest of the dishes are also a little worse than last time, so I don't know if I still prefer it over other brilliant Thai places in Ithaca.
Little pricey for me. First time there. I have not had thai food before. I had the chicken wings and the chicken thai fried rice. It was good.
The food is terrible, the service is bad, not worth
Excellent food and wonderful staff
Fairly broad menu, dine-in service has improved, small kitchen, pricey.
Ordered pad thai. I asked if their dish was gluten free and was assured that it was in fact GF. I did not have a reaction and the meal was very tasty. Not sure if they omitted a sauce to accommodate my request but certainly ask if you're concerned and they'll take care of you. I wish more places would denote on their menus which items can be made or are made with this allergen in mind. Thank you again Thai Basil
Had the drunken noodle with squid, and it was absolutely unappealing. Very rubbery squid was clearly not fresh. Overall very overpriced and waiter seemed to force us to make a choice
Outstanding food& service on Christmas Day.We lost power West Hill.They we're open,Great meal, Great people,Thank you,Merry Christmas 🎄🤗💓
Very rude on the phone, yelled at me for not being able to hear them
Great food and great service. Been coming here for 5+ years and it never fails
Curry was ok. The calamari was like I was eating rubber bands and we waited over an hour for our food. We won't be back.
I was so excited to go back here, as I went 4 years ago and had a great experience. I ordered a green tea, chicken pad Thai and spring rolls. The Pad Thai I believe was warmed up and served as it came out within 4 minutes of me ordering, it looked as bad as it tasted. The spring rolls were so overcooked that the ends were burnt and the dipping sauce was shockingly bland. Table had food remnants on it and the menu was not wiped down, had grease and fingerprints all over it. Not impressed.
Appalling experience. When we arrived to pick up the takeout, they informed us it would be another 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, they said it would be another 45 minutes on top of that.
Shortly after, we asked to cancel the order. An extremely rude employee then came out and berated us for wanting to cancel. Then they claimed that they gave our order to a random delivery driver . . . our order that supposedly wouldn't be ready for another 45 minutes! They wouldn't even cancel the order for us -- they just threw down a piece of paper and said to call the number on it ourselves, then walked away.
If you enjoy astoundingly incompetent and rude service, then this place is for you. Otherwise, I recommend going elsewhere.
So good! Great food, service, and atmosphere! Can’t wait to return 😎
One of the best Thai restaurant in Ithaca, NY. At the commons. You actually get real crab meat instead of imitation crab, etc.
food selection is great and tasty. Restaurant is somewhat neat. Been there couple of times.
Parking isn’t easy to get. Park in nearby parking garages and walk to restaurant.
If not eating in, call ahead to place order.
Service is ok.
Incredible food and incredible service.
I’ll keep it short— the portion sizes are just perfect. Enough to get you full and a bit over. You walk out of the restaurant with that happy and full feeling, which also comes with the experience of eating delicious dishes with fresh ingredients. The pad kee mao is served with liveliness with its vibrant colors and assortment of vegetables. The mango on the mango sticky rice is fresh and delicate and the rice is chewy and light.
I couldn’t be happier after dinner here. I ate alone and I was incredibly fulfilled.
We had the BEST food here yesterday while visiting Cornell. I loved the drunken noodles, and count this dish as one of the best I’ve ever had … anywhere. And my daughter absolutely loved the Penang. We highly recommend this place!
Testing a new Thai restaurant, I thought Chicken Pad Thai would be safe. It was the worst I have ever eaten.
Great Food
Food is pretty pricey for the amount they give you. Not the friendliest people either.
We booked in for dinner during EAS, there were 13 of us but the restaurant handles with ease delivery hot dishes covering the whole menu. A feast of delectable dishes
I am truly disappointed. I have been coming to Thai basil almost weekly for 3 years. I order the pad see yew tonight. No one told me that they were out of egg noodles so I opened the container and was confused to see pad Thai noodles. Then my meal only contained 2 pieces of tofu which is ridiculous for a $16 entree. Finally, all of the food tasted like burnt plastic. I called the restaurant to let them know and they had the audacity to tell me to come back and they would give me four pieces of tofu. Very disappointed with the meal and customer service I received today and after 3 years I will not be returning.
The people and food here were so good! They were super flexible, bathrooms were super clean, the restaurant was spacious as well. Ordered 4 dishes and the pricing was mediocre — the best part was the thai tea. it was delicious and everything was so fresh and flavorful! Would definitely come back again if I wasn’t on vacation.
The Thai Tea was sensational, service and overall vibe good!
Very different twist on pad Thai than we've had before. Love the spicy fried rice too! Fast and efficient and safe take out service.
Wonderful soup, and a nice calm spot to sit. However some beverages are interestingly priced and there was no manager there fore to ask or when I called backed later.
Our food was delicious and we loved the ambiance.
Food was fine but overpriced for what you get. The online app for ordering said they were closed (but they weren't) so I called my order in instead. Was charged about 20% more than what the app said the total would be. I ordered some Gyoza and was extremely disappointed to find they only gave me 4 dumplings but charged about $10 for it.... I could have bought a dozen of them at Wegmans for half the price.... Overall disappointing
Small portions, iceberg lettuce in the salad, and terrible service.
Very good food.
Wonderful service even when they are super busy. Plus the food is always good- their specials are great!!
Really good food, quick service, and friendly wait staff! :)
The food was good! The massaman curry is honestly delicious. Pretty reasonably priced, and the service was good. The reason I'm only giving 3 stars is because my friend's pad thai smelled a little off, to the point that he couldn't finish it (and he usually loves pad thai). You should still eat here, just don't get that dish!
Good place for a good bite to eat
Great food, great service, great aesthetics.
Loved the Royale Tom Yum soup and the duck fried rice (though had to add a bit more spice).
Good food. Friendly staff.
Very tasty food, good size portions, with cozy atmosphere. The appetizers were also very good. Fast service. Very friendly people as well.
Really enjoyed our lunch. Very flavorful!
Delivery was 1 hour early and friends were not expected until 1hour later. Ruined the event. Food was not hot upon delivery and had no taste.
D lISH
We had a great meal at Thai Basil. The waitress made certain that were understood the level of "hot" in the entrees when we placed our order. The service was quick, the food was delicious, and the waitress checked frequently to make certain we were pleased with the entrees. We will be back!
This was the single worst experience I have ever had with customer service.
They added chicken to my vegetarian order, blamed me for their mistake, and demanded I give back the food the day after their mistake. While on the phone asking about what could be done, they were rude, hung up on me, and yelled at me.
It is safe to say I will never be back.
The food was excellent. It was my first time being there and I ordered some Thai favorites like Pad Thai. Tom Yum soup. Everything was delicious and spiced exactly to the level I requested. The food arrived quickly and the service was excellent. I plan on going back.
Food is really good, but it took forever to get it! Poor girl was alone serving a whole restaurant by herself!
The food was great though, give it a chance
The best Thai food around. I recommend this place to all my friends.
Fantastic Thai food. The best in town. We will eat here again when we return this summer. Food is spicy and flavorful.
Friendly service and tasty Thai food
Ordered drunken noodles and confirmed they would be spicy but they tasted sweet, the same as the Pad See Eew. More than that, though, I waited five minutes on the phone to place the order, and when I picked up, I asked for chop sticks and was told I had already been given a fork. So I asked if I could also have chopsticks, and after a loud sigh and a grunt I was given one pair of chopsticks despite ordering two meals. Very odd experience and a bit disappointing!
Food took a long time and was mediocre at best. Horrible service, waited forever for the most basic things and had to ask multiple times. Ended up leaving the restaurant, couldn’t even get a plastic cup. Don’t waste your time here, plenty of other good restaurants in Ithaca.
Unless you like your face on fire, do not order The Jungle. Menu has 1 pepper, definitely a 3 or more pepper food. The rest of the food was great.
So I’ll keep it real! I love the fish sauce here! They are verrrry stingy about giving it out though! Even lied and said she didn’t have any cups to put it in and can she just put it on my food…on a to go order🤷🏾♂️But It’s my absolute favorite.!! The wonton soup is off the chain! What you see in the picture is the $15 shrimp pad tai that was supposed to have no nuts(FULL OF NUTS thank god I’m not allergic!) and 3 SHRIMP!!! Not four, cause I dug around…just 3! In all these noodles. I won’t be back mainly because the lady in the shiny dress(I assume the owner) always makes me feel like I’m not wanted there. Also because I paid $15 for 3 shrimp 😂 This wasn’t the first time but it will be the last!
Probably the least authentic Thai food I've ever had. Normally I wouldn't hold that against an ethnic restaurant except that "authentic" is in their name... The laarb was plain and maybe a level 0.5 spicy. Where was the cilantro? Where are the crushed chili peppers and crushed rice? The pad see ew was caramelly? with super thick grilled flavor. Few greens on it. And the chicken noodle soup was something a 10 year old would have made for his sick mom with no flavors or spice. This seems like a great place for my picky aunt who hates spice and flavors. Otherwise I can't recommend it. Plus one star for the nice decoration.
Very busy and really are apathetic to customer satisfaction. Daughter made reservation for Saturaday night. We arrived on time only to learned that reservation not recorded. Several other parties noted same situation. The establishment's response? Too bad. Really not worth the patronage.
Busy but staff was working like crazy. Curries were excellent.
We’ve been to some amazing Thai restaurants in NYC and Thai Basil is up there with the best of them. The food was very flavorful and spicy (but not overwhelmingly so), and they had a few surprising additions on the menu that I haven’t seen before - like their house special Khao Soy (in the picture). Definitely will be coming back here when we visit next time.
service is TERRIBLE!!!
How can a restaurant ask guests to leave when they just paid their bill and tips, just to make room for other people?
Got the crispy duck red curry, it was spicy, sweet, and scrumptious!
Great food thank you
Visiting Ithica has had its ups and downs. Thai Basil has been a huge up. Great food and changed our evening! Thank you!
I ordered a Pork Pad Thai from this place. It was so bad I couldn’t eat it. It had a spoilt, vinegar like taste to it. I had to toss it out. I wouldn’t recommend.
You know it's the best, you just know it.
I almost never leave reviews but this was a mess. Decent Tom kah soup but we ordered for pickup and they messed up two entrees and completely left out another (3 of 4 not correct). Had to drive all the way back to get the one missing entree while the rest of the meal got cold. Terrible over the phone service. Be warned, I wouldn’t go back.
Edit: just got the pad Thai they left out, very little flavor.
Delicious and way better than the main alternative in downtown Ithaca, Taste of Thai - often bland or overlooked and generally inconsistent quality at best. Thai Basil has bailed my last two curries and the last couple orders of Pad Kee Mao drunken noodles. Great flavor, just the right spice and consistent quality.
Ithaca has at least a half dozen Thai places to choose from. My wife (a vegetarian) and I (a chicken obsessed omnivore) have eaten at all of them, and we solidly side with Thai Basil. The food here is delicious! I've never been to Thailand so I can't speak to authenticity, but everything I've had out of the kitchen has pleased my palette plenty for dine-in and take-out.
Nice atmosphere and del8cious food! Very generous servings!!
So good! I had the traditional Kra Prow. Service was friendly and fast! Thai Basil was recommended to me and now I see why.
Lovely little place. Got some great food and will have to come again.
It's safe to say that this was one of my worst group dinner experiences ever.
About two weeks ago I called in for a graduation dinner reservation for 10 people (my and my roommate's family) in the evening. It was a same-day reservation, but I called as soon as the restaurant opened (around 11:30 AM). A woman on the phone asked me to arrive on time so that things would go smoothly.
We did arrive on time, and your expectation would be that with this much advance notice, a restaurant would be able to adequately assess their needs for the evening and adjust accordingly. Sadly, this is not what happened.
Instead, the restaurant forgot our order. Nobody even asked about us; no one even checked in after an hour. After an hour, _multiple_ waiters visited our table to re-ask our order. They still got it wrong, and served us at least one wrong dish. What ruined the experience even more was how impatient and abrupt the servers were with their mannerisms---hurriedly asking us for our orders and being impatient with vegetarian/vegan options.
We waited two and a half hours for food. Other groups of people came, ate, and left while we were waiting for our food. And the waiters dismissed people waiting at the door, multiple times, even those with reservations. (For some reason, they didn't actually lock the door and prevent new customers from wandering in, which baffles me.) Simply put, this restaurant was operationally incompetent. I would've addressed these concerns with them in person but they simply had no time or willingness to listen. Our night was painfully annoying and completely ruined.
Again, we waited two and a half hours for food. After this experience, any reasonable restaurant would have considered taking care of our bill for us. But the waiters were harried and could not even bother, in fact the waitress taking care of us simply said "I'm very busy, please don't waste my time and figure out how to pay." Great job ma'am, the ten of us are never coming back.
Delicious food and a nice atmosphere. Did take a bit for food to arrive but they were swamped with people and it seems like most places have staffing issues these days so I understand.
If you make reservations at this establishment, beware. They do not honor reservations they make. My family and I were very disappointed when we were turned away even though I had made a reservation 5 days prior. I thought I just got lucky when I was able to get a 7:00pm reservation for 5 people during graduation weekend. When we showed up for our reservations the manager abrubtly said "I'm full" "no more". The reservation book was open on the bar and I pointed to my name and indicated I had a reservation. She stated "I'm full" and walked away. Another patron, who was also turned away, said she had a 7pm reservation for a party of 8. No matter what the quality of your food is, you can't treat people so poorly. I realize graduation weekend is crazy for this small town. The manager could have at least offered an apology for overbooking or for seating walk-ins instead of reservations.
Very poor service. Rude waitress. Food takes forever to arrive. Better to avoid this place.
We really enjoyed the Red Curry and Pad See Ew! The wait was a little long before we were served, but the staff there really make up for it with cheerfully personality. Let them know if it is your birthday, and you will be in for a real treat! ;)
Great Thai food!
Only good when its delivered because you get to see many flies flying in the store if you dine in.
Great Thai food!!!!
Some of the best Thai I've had.
Super great Thai wings, and super sweet staff!
Absolutely horrible! Food tasted terrible with poor packaging!
tastes bad
