I'm sure the food is great when dining there, but forget ordering to be delivered. There's always something from your missing. if you order thru door dash, it makes it more difficult to get a credit back. so just decline the charge thru your bank. Absolutely TERRIBLE

Diner Review №4

Whenever I'm in this area, I always stop in to get lunch. If you want authentic Malaysian food, this is the spot. The staff is friendly, the place is clean and cozy.

Diner Review №5

Called to place order. Cash register lady would not give me mango sauce on the side when I ordered chili chicken. I even offered to pay for the sauce but she refused to sell it to me when I asked why she said u can only get mango sauce if u order mango chicken. Needless to say I did not order anything and probably will never again. There’s many Thai places in this area.

Diner Review №6

Great food, great atmosphere and service, Henry is the best & very accommodating!!!

Diner Review №7

Came in here with my sister and her boyfriend. Very quiet and calming atmosphere. Friendly service and they don’t rush you to eat! I love it! I had lettuce wraps with peanut sauce for appetizer and chicken basil thai noodles ( was a little spicy) and to drink I had my favorite drink, Thai tea 🥰
Highly recommend!

Diner Review №8

every food is awesome! I really recommend this restaurant👍🏻

Diner Review №9

The woman who was looking after the cash register looked at me disrespectfully as if she was swearing, the old woman with white hair

UPDATE 1/4/25
When Asian food is dominated by Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, this establishment offers a different, new, and unique addition to the beloved genre.

Located at the Hanover Commons off of Route 10 in East Hanover and named after one of the states in northwest Malaysia, Penang is popular with many locals and one of our favorite places to eat. The reservation was easily made by calling the restaurant.

Greeted by the staff and the owner, Henry, upon entering this cozy yet upscale atmosphere tonight, my partner and I got seated immediately as they were packed for dinner and for good reason. Their menu remained a melting pot of Native Malay, Thai, Chinese, and Indian cuisines, with vegan and vegetarian options.

To begin, our go-to appetizer remains their Roti Canai in a curry sauce, which has been consistently good after all these years. Our main meal consisted of Beef, Ginger and Scallion with brown rice and Pad See-Ew not listed. We even saved room for dessert and got their Sticky Rice with Mango (kao niew mamuang ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง), the most famous Thai dessert.

One can definitely taste the authenticity and influences in the meal, like home-cooked, which was delicious and well seasoned. Staff were friendly and accommodating, especially our server, Yan. The price and portions were reasonable. It's a must-visit for enthusiasts of Malaysian and Thai flavors, which we continue to recommend.

Diner Review №14

Authentic dishes. Upscale. Outstanding service and hospitality. Excellent desserts

Diner Review №15

Good Thai food. Tasted good and service was good as well. Ambiance was excellent. Highly recommend the Roti Canai, Drunken Noodles, Thai Iced Tea, and Coconut Fried Rice.

My only issue with this place is that it taste TOO good. We are visiting from Florida and on Christmas night when most places were closed, we needed dinner at our hotel. We ordered two soups and the beef and it was delicious. They delivered our order in about an hour to the 3rd floor of our hotel. The coconut curry soup is a MUST TRY! I had the rest leftover for breakfast this morning.

Diner Review №28

Great customer service

Diner Review №29

I'm a regular here. We go here for birthdays and celebrations and love it here. The staff members are so friendly and attentive, and the food is top tier. It's truly our family's favorite restaurant.

Diner Review №30

Diner Review №31

Food is delicious, service is fast and friendly and location is perfect

Diner Review №32

Great food and taste.

Diner Review №33

Solid one star. especially after being loyal customers for over 5 years. Today was a letdown—rice had a dish-cleaning smell…really disgusting. Besides, they raised the prices on most of dishes from $15.99-16.99 to $20.99. That’s okay. But with this quality of food…very disappointing

Diner Review №34

Yikes, I love this place!! I come here with my friend Michael every time I visit New Jersey from Florida. It is always a positive and delicious experience. The service is excellent too. I can't wait for a return visit.

Diner Review №35

Great food and friendly staff! Highly recommended!

Diner Review №36

Amazing staff, great management. Will definitely come again! Salutes from the Poconos!

Diner Review №37

Edited: Responding to the owner, I was there ~6PM, restaurant had 7 wait staff, not a single one came by to ask me until I finished everything..

Very mediocre food and barely any service was provided.

Ordered chicken satay, and shrimp noodle soup, broth tastes like artificially flavored. Chicken satay was good.

Only one table was Asian dining customer, out of the 6 tables, that does tell you the crowd their food is marketed to.. won’t be returning

Diner Review №39

Our family have been here for dinner and lunch countless times in the past 18 years or so. The food is always great, delicious and authentic. My favorite is the roti bread with the sauce, the salty fish eggplant, the tom yum soup, the crispy fish and the penang shrimp. Service has always been friendly and welcoming.

Diner Review №40

Diner Review №41

I jumped on the food.
I didn't even take pictures .
The wanton soup was great.
The duck was even better!

Diner Review №42

Love the food, especially the roti canai.

Diner Review №43

Best Malaysian/Thai restaurant I’ve eaten at so far! Food was well-seasoned and absolutely delicious, service was speedy and attentive, and the decor suited the cozy yet upscale atmosphere. Highly recommend the eggplant with salted fish, Hainanese chicken, and the roti.

Diner Review №44

Diner Review №45

Horrible experience. Flat noodle with chicken and shrimp had no flavor absolute disaster. Probably had the worst Thai red curry which looks and tastes nothing like red curry it had only onion and Indian curry leaves stay away from this place, overhyped and high priced close to 50$ for 2 horrible items.

The service was 10 🌟. It was a bit chilly night. I came in the restaurant rubbing my arms, and one guy (staff) apologized for the cold a/c, so I told him it's the outside. He remembered it and gave me a hot tea to go, so it would keep me warm later. It might be a small thing, but I haven't experienced that kindness/service. I should have asked his name...

Diner Review №51

FOUND DEAD FLY IN MY FOOD. All the staff came over and laughed it off and said “that’s extra protein”. Seems this is normal to them. Felt nauseous the entire day.

Very unsanitary, someone needs the call the health department on this place.

Diner Review №52

One of my favorite places to eat. Chilean sea bass with blackbean sauce is amazing. Roti Canai is a must have.

Diner Review №53

Simply amazing and outstanding restaurant. They were packed for dinner and for good reason. The flavors in the food were u paralleled. I had not tried Malaysian food before this and it's now my new favorite. Just WOW. Staff there were super friendly and helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed all our experiences there.

Diner Review №54

Had the asam laksa which was incredible ! Hainanese chicken rice was pretty good but chicken was a bit smaller than expected.
The congee was delicious as well as the kuey teow soup. Very friendly and accommodating staff - will be back to try other things. 🤤

Diner Review №55

Diner Review №56

Have been eating for many years . Love the red curry and chilli chicken . Can't forget the sticky mango dessert

Diner Review №57

One of the only places in northern NJ to get good Singaporean/Malaysian food. Excellent char kway teow and hainan chicken rice. Very reasonable prices and fast service. We always go when we’re in the area!

Diner Review №58

Diner Review №59

Came here 3 times. The taste of food was worse and worse. I don’t think we will ever came back again.
It doesn’t taste like Thai style and the Chinese food also not good at all. For lo Mien with duck, the lo mien was too salty and the duck was all bone with little meat.
For Tempeh beef, it was ok, but just ok.
Others, the grilled fish in foil was nice, the waiter lighted up the fire when he took it out. And the fish was fresh.

Diner Review №60

Everything delicious!

Diner Review №61

Diner Review №62

My clay pot was delicious! Though maybe some MSG? Service was excellent. Good value.

Diner Review №63

We’ve been to Penang many times but had a very poor experience last evening. They served us coconuts which were clearly stale and should never have been served to anyone. We immediately returned them. The person in charge insisted on charging us for these and we paid up after telling him it was highly improper for him to do so. He couldn’t be bothered. After years of going to this restaurant, we will now think twice before going there again.

Diner Review №64

Diner Review №65

Diner Review №66

We have been going to Penang on a very regular basis and we really enjoy the food and the service. The taste is close to pretty authentic Malaysian food and very tasty. The staff there is very friendly and is always welcoming. There is also BYOB so if you plan in advance, please do bring a bottle of your own wine to enjoy with your food. When in a rush I also do take away pretty often. The only downside is that you cannot make a reservation in advance especially for Friday nights so if you come at a peak time you could be waiting for a while.

Diner Review №67

Food selection is good. Flavor of food is fantastic compared to other Malaysian restaurants in this area

Diner Review №79

Diner Review №80

Been coming here for years
Solid

Diner Review №81

Decided to get shrimp lo mein from my favorite thai place but to my surprise after receiving my order it was with chicken. I went back to see if i can get it replaced and the staff was very accommodating with helping. The second time they got it right with extra vegetables but barely any noodles and the ones that were there were broken up. As well as a nice layer of sauce at the bottom of my container which isn’t how it’s normally prepared. :(( upsetting

Diner Review №83

You know you are in a good place the moment you sit down and regulars at nearby tables immediately lean over to tell you "...everything on the menu is delicious, but you really should try my favorite..."

Diner Review №84

Diner Review №85

Very authentic Malaysia food . Love the popiah. Stir fry Kuih Teaw with smoky really good . Prawn noodle is good too . Worth to try !!! Will back

Diner Review №86

Hitting it out of the park on every detail. Food service and atmosphere are all perfect. If you haven’t tried Penang it is a must stop. My wife and I had spring rolls roti canai and green curry vegetables and pad Thai. A cut above all other restaurants in this category.

Diner Review №87

Diner Review №88

A good selection of Malaysian and Thai food. Sautéed squid curry with lemon grass was delicious. Sticky rice with mango was good but mango was not sweet and portion was rather small.

Diner Review №89

Found a roach in the mee goreng !! Ordered veggie mee goreng and it came with shrimp in it.

Called the restaurant, no apology - insisted that is okay . Never seen string worse

Diner Review №90

Delicious laksa and Malaysian pork chops. Service is quick and attentive.

Diner Review №91

We were in the area and wanted to try this Malaysian place. The service was excellent and quick. For food, the noodle dishes were amazing and authentic but for some reason, hanan chicken was served a bit too cold for my liking. I prefer it warm or room temperature. Appetizers were okay to moderate(some were just bland). Dessert was pretty good. However the menu is big and I want to go back and try other things. Maybe I didn't order the right stuff.

The best Malaysian and Thai food in NJ or NYC area. This restaurant is way superior in quality then it's namesake in Edison. The service is with an absolute smile always. Shout out to Kunga and everyone else from the great staff. Our favorite family place for many years.

Diner Review №103

Diner Review №106

Delicious food, great atmosphere and customer service!! Everyone is very friendly and the food is outstanding! Amazing flavors and spices. Love the Roti Canai, Thai Lettuce Wraps, and Mango Chicken!!

Diner Review №107

Diner Review №108

I really love it. Good for beginner Thai food eaters. The waiters will guide you.

Diner Review №109

What happened to you? The food used to be consistently great. Now the beef chow fun is a pile of mushy noodle paste and the house tofu looks like little broken bits of tofu that doesn't even taste right. When you went to the much smaller take out containers while increasing prices, I was still willing to pay for good food. Nowadays I feel robbed when ordering from you.

Diner Review №110

Diner Review №111

I ordered the vegetarian pad Thai to-go. It was way too sweet. It wasn't the worst but it didn't really taste like pad-thai. However the place was very clean

Diner Review №112

Extremely slow service. The ratio was definitely off because it seems like the employees were wearing multiple hats meaning the greeter is seating, taking orders, cleaning tables and running in between the kitchen. Food was below average and I'm not sure if it was due to the lack of staff. Thai basil noodles were overcooked and bland. Shrimp pad thai was also flavorless. Vegetarian spring rolls were cold (unfortunately did not capture pic).

Diner Review №113

Always excellent food and service.

Diner Review №114

Diner Review №115

This is one of my favorite Malaysia restaurants in East Hanover. The curry beef strew is so delicious, it’s my husband and daughter’s favorite. My favorite is the Tom yum seafood noodle soup, it comes with a lot of seafood, is the best I have had compared to other Malaysia restaurants. The roti with curry dip is great appetizer.

Diner Review №116

Diner Review №117

They offer a variety of southeast asian meals. As someone who has ate authentic Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine, the food at Penang was very much “Americanized”. The curry was flour based and very gravy-like. The sambal didn’t taste authentic.. I really enjoyed the ayam rendang (chicken rendang) it didn’t taste like authentic rendang, it also wasn’t spicy but the chicken was cooked to perfection. I also enjoyed the lychee drink with lychee coconut jelly.

Diner Review №118

Penang Malaysian and Thai Cuisine in New Jersey has excellent food, fast service and good environment. We have been many times and food is always same quality. This is what I love about the place. My favorite vegetarian dish is their "kari sayur". Would highly recommend it. I prefer that over any other chicken dish. love it!

Diner Review №119

Friendly service and great food.

Diner Review №120

Diner Review №121

I'm very glad that I went to this restaurant. I liked it here.

Diner Review №122

Decent Thai/Malay food in NJ. Fresh Roti Canai and spicy curries are the best items we had. Also we tried the Pineapple /Salt fish fried rice. Came out very good. Fired icecream was good hit with the kids. Wait times were pity high.

Diner Review №130

Diner Review №131

The worst experience. We sat down right away and they took our order right away. We sat for 40 minutes and the food never came. We got up and left. Horrible service. The server was the nastiest ever. Go to Madison or Morristown Thai restaurants. They're so much better.

Diner Review №132

Pretty good, although I wish they would get a char on the pad see ew noodles.

Diner Review №133

Very tasty thai food must try. Good Ambience . Free parking. Good staff

Diner Review №134

Very good Malaysian food. Quality & portion size had dropped for several years but happy to see last couple times recently had improved. Wish the menu choices could replicate the Edison NJ location which has more variety.

We came here for a large family-style dinner and not only was the food delicious, but the service was top notch as well. We all enjoyed our meal, even those unfamiliar with South(east) Asian cuisines. There's also a large surface parking lot easily accessible for some mobility impaired folks. I would definitely come to Penang again!

Diner Review №154

I don't know if I am able to judge this restaurant on the basis of one dish. I enjoyed it but I find it hard to give the food a 5 star rating because the fish was good but definitely not a 5 but it is definitely not a stay from dish! I will add the name of the dish in the future. I posted the picture.

Diner Review №155

Love it!!!!! You must go, definitely worth trying it. Trust me, you will keep going back. I have no doubt on that.

Diner Review №156

Flavor is great. Price is great. I highly suggest replacing those beat-up plastic water cups. Water feels like tap water with a weird taste in it.

Diner Review №157

Family and I have been in this location multiple times and we’ve always been satisfied with the food.

our go-to app is their Roti Canai which has been consistently good after all these years. Dipping that dough in curry sauce definitely works the appetite. For our entrees we love sharing their thai mango chicken and seafood panfried noodle. And from time to time we try other things on the menu just to see if we’ll find a new favorite. Other good ones are their honey squid, golden ribs, satay, salted fish fried rice and whole sea bass. Even the desserts are good including their sticky rice and fried ice cream.

and dont forget their thai bubble milk tea! it has always been a good experience here and we’re glad we have a place to go back to that the whole family enjoys!

Diner Review №158

Had red curry and penang beef for lunch. There was no vegetable in either one just rotten onion. The beef was all fast and cartridge and unettable. Very disappointing.

Diner Review №159

The price is little bit high, Once a while, it's okay, The food is regular.

Diner Review №160

It is as if we are on a trip in Malaysia! Our recent favorite!

Diner Review №161

This is one of our favorite spot but today some weren't good as expected. Roti canai almost felt spoilt with bad odor and the sauce of Malaysian Buddhist delight didn't taste good. Felt bit undercooked and tasted bad.

Diner Review №162

Packed during lunch so seated alfresco. Would be five star if it has fried pork lard and cockles!

Diner Review №163

Always crowded, because the food is so good. Friendly staff, fresh ingredients, a great restaurant in an unlikely place 😀

Diner Review №164

Diner Review №165

Very good food

Diner Review №166

You can't go wrong with Penang. Because I miss the one in Boston, this is the closest one to me here in NJ. My favorite is the Golden Squid (which reminds me of my good old college days), and my kids enjoyed the pineapple fried rice and pad thai.

Diner Review №167

Delicious meal! We were served within 10 minutes of placing our order.

Diner Review №168

Good food and ambience. Food portions are pretty much large. Courteous service.

Diner Review №169

Four of us returned to Penang and chose to eat casually outside in a small area along an outside wall. It's a little off-putting as it faces the parking lot and is tight behind cloth-rigged stantions. The food and service were very nice and well worth the visit. The repeat for next time will the chicken rendang, so good!

Food served with hair in it. Totally ruined our mood. Flies roaming around the table. Not hygienic at all. Also asking Tip outside the restaurant in a very rude way. How can I pay tip if I am not happy at all with the food and service. I will not recommend anyone. They have no ethics.
