Five Stars for Chao Baan!
My daughter and I visited Chao Baan, a Thai restaurant in The Grove just outside of St. Louis, for the first time, and it absolutely blew us away.
The service was fantastic. Our waiter went above and beyond, offering thoughtful recommendations across the menu. He didn’t just suggest dishes at random—he described each one in detail, from presentation to flavors, and helped us choose based on spice preferences, which was perfect since my daughter prefers mild dishes.
The food? Phenomenal. We started with the fried potstickers, which were perfectly crisp and paired with an amazing dipping sauce. For our mains, we had the Thai fried rice with beef and the Khao Soi.
The Thai fried rice was seasoned beautifully, with tender slices of beef cooked to perfection. It wasn’t spicy, which suited my daughter, but it was packed with flavor. As for the Khao Soi—this was my first time trying it, and I can honestly say it was phenomenal. The rich, creamy curry with noodles might just be the freshest, most flavorful Thai dish I’ve had in St. Louis.
On top of all that, the food came out incredibly fast, piping hot, and bursting with flavor.
If you’re looking for fresh, authentic Thai cuisine with impeccable service, Chao Baan is a must-visit. It’s easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in St. Louis, and I’m already planning to go back.
I came here for dinner because I was craving Thai food. Upon arrival, I was immediately seated at my table, and a server came to get my drink and appetizer orders. I knew what I wanted the moment I sat down. I ordered Thai tea, eggroll, and beef Kua Ling. The food was okay, and it was bland. I was expecting so much flavor, like most Thai food places I have visited. I guess this place was a spot if you wanted a quick Asian food when you are super hungry.
The interior of the restaurant is cute, and it is very welcoming. I wish the food were better, though.
Visited the area for work and decided to try this thai place since I've heard good things. The server was great and the restaurant is cute/ambiance is good. The drinks were great and appetizer (fish cake) was good. However, the pad see ewe was very heavy on the soy sauce and is salty. The noodles were thin and not the normal wide thick rice noodles I'm used to. The flavor just wasn't there for me. The papaya salad was good but just too sweet even for a medium spice. The steak salad flavor was great but the meat itself is very dry - not sure if it's just the area but the meat was lacking. The pad thai was mushy since it was overcooked. I didn't like it very much. The flavor isn't bad but doesn't really taste like pad thai, just like stir fry noodles that's been soaked too long and then cooked which caused the mushiness of the noodles. The sticky rice itself was also mushy which was disappointing as well.
Overall, the flavors were okay. I'm not sure if I would recommend this as a good place to go for authentic thai food but good for drinks and appetizers.
The place is modern chic. I love the diversity that it offered. The hostess was nice and our server (young male) was attentive and friendly. The food was good. We came on a Monday evening. It wasn’t busy and the food came out very fresh. I personally enjoyed the flavors. They were overwhelmingly drowned out by sauce. My 15 year old is a picky eater and he really enjoyed his dish. Some things to note, there are no salt/pepper/soy sauce/or other sauces on the tables so you do have to ask for those. The menus are a QR code, so you should be familiar with using that ahead of time. Also, the sodas are canned. (No free refills) It’s in The Grove so it has that casual, lowkey, eclectic vibe. There’s plenty of seating and open space. Overall, it was a good experience.
Every-time I've came here, my experience has always been top tier. Essa is our favorite server and the food here is authentic and amazing. They do a little happy hour during the week and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
There was a one time when my order wasn't correct but the server and manager corrected it swiftly. They promised if it wasn't up to my liking, they would be more than happy to try again.
Came with an old work friend. Nice clean layout of the restaurant. Staff was attentive and willing to make adjustments meal. My 4 kings with different meats and veggies tasted only like fish. No other flavors was expecting a lot of flavors as well as textures. My friends chicken egg plant had some pieces undercooked and some so overcooked it was slimy. They gave my friend a curry that had a good flavor but it only had onions, peanuts and potatoes. So it looked bland. Appetizers we chose were good
The restaurant is lovely. Beautifully decorated and lots of seating.
Service could be a little better. They weren’t about any conversation. Just taking orders and bringing the food.
Drinks were decent… strong.
The food was delicious. We tried the kha soi and spicy kee mao noodles. Both were excellent. I suggest skipping the cucumber salad. Nothing to write home about and not what I imagined. I’ve returned twice since the initial visit.
Had a very good family birthday meal with 8 people last night. Everyone was impressed with food and cocktails. Prompt efficient service. The crab rangoon, potstickers and spring roll apps were all good. For entrees, Four Kings of Thailand, the Beef Nom Tuk and Khoa Soi were all very good!
The thai fried rice is so flavorful
The food here is incredible, Thai food is always amazing but this place is above all the other Thai places I’ve tried. Plus the service is incredible, they have a bar with cocktails and wine or beer, food is clearly homemade and the quality is incredible, can not recommend this place enough.
Great cuisine everytime!!
Overall, not bad, but not great either.
Fabulous food (tried the Pad See Ew and the Khao Tod Nam Sod) and excellent service from Essah, super attentive and kind waiter.
Food was great and Isa made the whole experience exceptional…

Best pad see ew I’ve ever had! Service never fails either.

I think I was more pleased with the service than the food.
I had the eggplant dish which was okay. Server- bartender was attentive and helped my group take photos. Others enjoyed their meal a lot.
Server was very friendly and contributed to the overall experience at Chao Baan. Food was amazing! Highly recommend the Pad Thai
The customer service was rude and did not accept our request to add any vegetables. They also mentioned that they do not modify the dishes and whatever is on the menu is final.
I ordered Pad Thai as a take out. I asked for chicken & medium spice. This dish had no heat to it (not even mild) and it was extremely dry - the chicken was overcooked & the noodles needed more sauce. What was good: It was ready on time, the host was friendly & greeted me when I walked in, the place has a really great atmosphere. I hope it was an off-day & not the norm.
When placing my order for take out I requested noodles, specifically thin noodle for my dish. The person on phone explained no substitute was allowed, I asked what the curry was served with and he said thin noodles. I got home, rice was served to my surprise with the curry. You need to train your staff, this is unacceptable.
Super Authentic Thai food. I spent 6 months of my youth in Thailand. This place brings back memories. The only other place is JJ Thai street food in Chicago
They refused to seat me at 8:35. Also the place smelled like trash on the inside.
Our goto for Thai food.
Every time I come here the food is exceptionally good and the service is great too! I highly recommend
One of my favorite Thai places in St. Louis! The best times to visit are definitely during the week when they aren't as busy. Weekends can be pretty busy and it's a little harder to get great service.
I've loved every dish I have tried and they have perfect portions!
Dinner is fantastic. I used to be frustrated by the QR code stuff, but that's been gone for a bit, and the food is great! Liam was a great waiter!
If you're looking for a delicious and authentic Thai meal in St. Louis, look no further than Chao Baan. This hidden gem in The Grove offers a wide variety of dishes from all over Thailand, including the ever-popular pad thai, crispy spring rolls, and tamarind whiskey.
The pad thai at Chao Baan is some of the best I've ever had. The noodles are perfectly cooked and the sauce is flavorful and balanced. The crispy spring rolls are also a must-try. They're light and crispy and the dipping sauce is delicious.
If you're looking for something to drink, the tamarind whiskey is a great choice. It's tart and refreshing and pairs perfectly with the food.
The service at Chao Baan is also excellent. Our server, Leon, was friendly and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed.
Overall, Chao Baan is a great place to enjoy a delicious and authentic Thai meal. The food is excellent, the service is top-notch, and the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend
Food was good and fast! Ordered at the bar and service was awesome. Food was as expected. Atmosphere feels like upscale fast food.....

Great spot for takeout that has been in my regular rotation since Covid. FOH staff is always great and the kitchen is always fast, even in a rush I don’t think I’ve ever waited longer than 30 minutes here. Their consistency has really improved over the years as well, at this point I think they are one of the better Thai restaurants in the city limits.
Vibes 7/10, Food 9.5/10, Drinks 8/10, Our Server Liam 100000/10. Will be back!
Food here is served cold. Also sometimes they serve unfresh food.
This breaks my heart to leave this review but I just have to say it.
I’m still giving 5 stars because all of our other visits were fantastic.
The service we received last night was fine. The server seemed like he was having a bad day. That is fine as well. We are human beings and we are entitled to our emotions. However I didn’t appreciate the rudeness he displayed towards my husband right in front of the manager. He cut my husband off while he was talking as if he wasn’t standing there.
This behavior was displayed after I already paid the bill and tipped him. I didn’t ask for my tip back because that would be a crappy thing to do.
My husband and I just wanted to add our meal points to his email account like we’ve done many times before. Instead of the server saying that he didn’t know how to do it and instead of him asking someone who did. He decided to tell us a lie like it was a fact.
This is the first time we’ve ever had a problem with a server. If we decide to come back and he is present we will simply ask for someone else or just leave if no one else is available.
Chao baan is our favorite Thai place in Saint Louis. Great vegetarian options!!! Laap tofu and khao soi especially.
The restaurant is lovely. Beautifully decorated and lots of seating.
Service could be a little better. They weren’t about any conversation. Just taking orders and bringing the food.

Ordered the tofu green curry, medium spice and had nothing short of a religious experience. Cocktails were excellent as well
Tthe food was amazing and Essah was a helluva a waiter! 5 stars for sure!
This use to be one of my most favorite restaurants in the area but the food has become more and more mediocre. The rice was old and dry, the thai sauage didn't have the fresh herbs it use to..not a single dish an enjoyable as it use to. I wont be coming back.
Came with an old work friend. Nice clean layout of the restaurant. Staff was attentive and willing to make adjustments meal. My 4 kings with different meats and veggies tasted only like fish. Food was mediocre . Pad see ew was over salted. The khao tod bam sod was okay but the crunch was probably the best part.
Ordered Pad See Ew and Thai Fried Rice with Tofu. Pad See Ew was incredibly salty, almost inedible. The tofu in both dishes was overcooked, couldn't not eat it. The Thai Fried Rice would have been fine without the tofu. Have heard great reviews from friends before, but this was incredibly disappointing.
Went in to pick up an online order we placed. Sat at the bar to have a cocktail while we waited. The bartender could barely look away from his phone to make our cocktails. We got our food home and none of it was made properly; pad Thai was made with vermicelli noodles, not rice noodles, was missing egg and was extremely spicy. The Meing Kham dish was not spicy at all and had very few noodles. Very disappointed since we have had good food there in the past. I think they need to get new staff.
Not happy with ours experience here. The foods was terrible and expensive. The waiter was rude and giving us an attitude. It was a very nice place and in the good area, sadly poor customers service.
Curry was good. The spicy noodles were in such a sickly sweet sauce. It was like eating a bowl of caramelized sugar. Also they didn't velvet the chicken so it was eh.
Id say its def edible but I personally wasn't into it, if it were a few bucks cheaper per item I could let more slide
I will never return to Chao Baan. I was told that the chef refused to serve the dinner I requested with out the spicy glaze/sauce. I just wanted it served on the side. My next choice they refused to leave off the stir fry spices too. The server was abrupt and acted like I was changing the whole dish. I settled on another dish and if was overly spiced in pepper. Awful food and attitudes. Never again.
Place is nice and clean. But extremely disappointed with quality of food and service. We ordered spring roll, Tom Kha soup and fried rice with chicken. The spring roll was good, but the soup was cold and fried rice was without chicken. When we complained on fried rice, and asked for what we ordered, they charged us for the fried rice without chicken as well that we did not order. They said they will give 50% discount on this dish. When we did not agree to pay for what we did not order, the server was angry. He was more concerned for his tips then satisfying customer. I don’t recommend this restaurant.
I wanted to start off by saying this was by far the worst experience I’ve had at any restaurant or place of business. May 28th was my birthday and my family and I decided to dine at Chao Baan on Manchester/Chouteau. My mother spoke highly of this place, and after checking the reviews I figured it would be worth the shot.
From the very beginning our waiter took our order but upon bringing the food to the table he would just drop it off without announcing who ordered which dish. This resulted in many of us having to figure this out on our own or someone at the table eating someone else’s food. With a table of 9 people this consistently happened throughout the night, but we overlooked this detail because they seemed short staffed and our waiter was giving it his all. Shortly after our bartender brings out the drinks and spills alcohol all over my 12 year old son. The drink also spilled into his food, which they didn’t offer to refund or get him placement. There was glass underneath the table, the table was wet and my son was wet. Our waiter and bartender apologized, but didn’t come over to clean the table or move us to a different table. They just kept bringing out the entrees until we asked to be seated elsewhere. There was a fruit gnat inside of my uncles drink and, shortly after my aunts order, which originally was screwed up by our waiter finally arrives and it has hair inside of it. When we mentioned the hair inside of her dish our waiter goes on to say, “The industry standard doesn’t require cooks to wear hairnets.” Everything he said from that moment on was extremely condescending and sent us over the edge.
At this point we were doing our to hold it together, but after he began disrespecting my family I asked to speak with his manager. The manager decided to discount the bill by 50% which was generous of him but overall I wouldn’t recommend this place to ANYONE. Not just because of the service but overall the food wasn’t worth the price. You could definitely do better by going to Thai 202.
Stopped by check this place out since it was just right around the corner from our Airbnb. The vibe and atmosphere felt cold and commercial. The restaurant was not busy at the time, still the host felt no energy and preoccupied with something else. So we got it as a take out. As a Thai person I was looking around to find Thai employee to chat or ask for recommendations, but couldn’t find anyone at the time. Food took about 20 mins. The food is definitely for American audiences.
We've been going to Chao Baan for a couple years now. I used to love both the food, and the ambience. Perhaps due to Covid, or staffing shortages, service has declined significantly. You're encouraged to order and pay - as well as tip 20% - using a QR scan code. Our server this past Sunday was clearly overwhelmed; he and one other person had responsibility for all customers. The hostess was obviously not trained for the position, and tried to seat us at the worst possible table, even though there were no large parties, and plenty of room away from the busiest part of the kitchen. I sure hope they recover from this.
Tamarind whisky sour was tasty. I had “spicy” som tam with no discernible chili, light on fish sauce, but otherwise ok. Pad Thai also on the bland side. Crab rangoon was good.
Beautiful space located conveniently in The Grove with delicious food. The sauces are delightful. The food is great and not too heavy which I was very grateful for.
This place gave me mild food poisoning. The food is also way too expensive for not having any service, because you have to order and pay for everything on your phone.
So there are no menus and you must place orders and pay via your phone. So for service I am giving 1 star, I would give zero if I could. Restaurants are about serving the customers not dumping the work on them. As for the atmosphere, neither the music or interior are asain themed. The floor is dirty but the tables are clean. The hostess seems nice enough for the short interaction you have.
For the food, hot is a joke. No fresh Thai chilies :/ chicken is over cooked, though other than that the flavor profile is fairly good.
Bland americanized thai food (minus the whole fish; that was the one good dish). Atmosphere is horrible. They try to push you to order on your phone and wait staff is nowhere to be found. I won't pay yuppie restaurant prices for takeout levels of service.
My family and friends dined here. The experience was absolutely horrible! There was no explanation of how the menu or ordering worked. For those who haven't been the menu is a QR code and all ordering is done online. If you actually want to interact with your party this is not the place to come as everyone stares at their phone half the time trying to figure out how to order. And beware that there is no "submit" button. As soon as you add an individual dish then it's considered ordered. Suddenly food started appearing at our table. Again, instructions from a waiter would have been helpful. And all of your table's food does not come out at once. Some people were almost finished eating while others had to wait another 10 minutes. My food was so bland when it finally came that it was inedible. I was told that was the simplest dish on the menu and usually kids ordered it. It was not on the kids section of the menu. It had no seasoning whatsoever! I wish a waiter had been there at any point to discuss the menu. When I finally got someone to call over and said how bad the dish was they acted like I should have known that! I've gotten this dish in other restaurants and, while simple, it has been flavorful and delicious. I was offered soy packets for my bland dish. It was only after I complained again, as the soy did nothing, that I was offered another dish. Also we saw on their website that the restaurant was offering a 20% discount to healthcare workers. My mom is a doctor so we asked for the discount and the restaurant tried to refuse as they said the offer was old. There was no date on the offer and it was live on their own website! Never at any point were we asked if the food was good (it was not) or if we needed anything. In fact every time a waiter had to speak with us they acted like it wasn't their job! We ended up spending about $40 per person on bad Asian food when we could have gotten good Asian food much cheaper somewhere else. Then they still ask for a tip at the end even though they don't take orders, give advice on the menu, or even interact with the guests! If you hate interacting with people then this is your place! Otherwise go elsewhere if you actually want good food and service. The next time I see a QR code menu and ordering I will turn around and walk out the door.
So so good. Having lived and worked in Thailand, I usually avoid ordering pad thai in the US but Chao Baan’s is incredible. Also like their pad see ew and desserts.
The fact that you have to order and pay online when dining in would have been enough to ruin the experience, not to mention there's such poor reception in the building. On top of that, the food wasn't that great but was still sooo expensive. Plus it made my fiancee sick within a few hours.
Didn't eat in just got carry out but the food was absolutely amazing. We tried three different dishes and every single one was good and unique. Pad Thai was on point. The shrimp didn't taste like Midwest shrimp. Damn good food. Will be grabbing the girlfriend and coming for a date night there soon for sure.
We ordered chicken pad see ew. The dish lacked flavor and the chicken was very very dry.
Chao Baan offers a fully automated online ordering through a Toast QR Code. Although this is convenient, it felt odd not having a waiter or waitress. They should really remove the tipping option since customer service is nonexistent. As for the food, the Pad See Ew had absolutely zero spice despite ordering it mild. It also tasted like a hastily thrown together stir fry with basic soy sauce.
Huge portion sizes, could easily order one meal for two people. Really good system of phone-based ordering from your table, including adding things to your tab, but there are waiters to take your order in person as well.
What is there to complain about? Great food, reasonable prices, very quick and attentive service. Maybe the most slept on Thai places in STL.
Used to be one of our favorites but the food has been getting increasingly worse over last 6 months. In addition, they have switched to online ordering at the table. They want a tip before the service is rendered, and that service has also gone down. It’s pretty much non existent at this point. I’m not sure we will be going back any time soon.
Update April 2023. Changed to 3 stars as they fixed the tipping issue. Other things remain the same.
DELIVERY GRADE: B- (Previous A)
Restaurant has slowed down on deliveries recently. Wait times up to 5-10 minutes.
The Thai food equivalent of smoothed out SpongeBob. Great potstickers. Decent, good quantity, just meh in the flavor department on the entrees (Pad Thai and See Ew). You just expect even bad thai to smack you with one hyper aggro standout flavor, but here it’s just all plain and playing it too safe.
The food was very good but a bit pricey.
This is a great place to have food in STL. My wife and I have been there a couple of times and it is definitely amazing!!! Highly recommended.
best pad see ew ever. i will never shut up about how good it was. service was amazing as well
Really really amazing Thai food. A bit pricey but very generous portions!
They’re understaffed. The person running the parse was kinda rude. Food was slightly above average - there was balance of flavors but nothing really stood out for me. Also, their ordering & payments app is confusing.
Great drinks and sleek decor but the food was MID 😕 Also, the ordering via app was inconvenient. We wouldn't go out of our way to eat here next time we visit STL --we're from out of state.
DRINKS
We ordered Tito's Tokay Boomer and Goodbye Fishes and enjoyed the taste and presentation of both. The Goodbye Fishes would be good for anyone who likes more of a spiced flavor (spiced, not spicy). The Tito's Tokay Boomer was refreshing and the taste was balanced.
FOOD
The Tod Man was tasty, ⚠️ if you like fish cakes. It had the usual springy texture and the sauce it came with was the typical sweet chili sauce with vinegar and diced onions.
The Tom Yum soup although brimming with enjoyable mushrooms was TOO SALTY. I have had Tom Yum soup from various Thai restaurants and this was unpalatable.
We also had the pot stickers but they weren't anything to write home about. The sauce they paired it was odd. It was a sweet, red sauce that felt more appropriate for crab ragoon than pot stickers. The pot stickers without the sauce lacked flavor.
The 4 Kings of Thailand dish though SAVED THE WHOLE MEAL ✨ The presentation was rough but it was hot, saucy and delicious. I want more of this --good food-- vs. presentation.
No problems with the wait staff! Fine service.
The host was very rude. When we pointed out the wrong entree for one of our friends, he rudely said we need to talk to the waiter and not him. But he was the one running around managing the restaurant. Separately, when we were leaving he offered to take a picture of our group, thinking he wanted us to leave on a good note. But no... He actually cut our friend out of the frame whose order they screwed up. That is some passive aggressiveness. We will NOT go to this restaurant again.
The online ordering method doesn't make them bring food together at the table. One of us got his entree when everyone was done. Not a good experience for a group dinner.
This place need some serious mgmt check.
Went here to get Thai food for the first time with friends. AMAZING food and the staff was SUPER nice. If at all possible, listen to your server's recommendations and you'll never go wrong!
Worst Thai food I’ve ever had. Totally tasteless Massaman curry and fried tofu looked dead and shriveled up like it had been cooked and thawed over and over (also totally bland). Cocktails were pretty good but insanely overpriced and tiny… two stars probably just reflects how much I liked the smoky mezcal, and likely should be just one
Not the best in town, but I'd happily go to this place on Mon/Tue evenings when other places aren't available. Some servers are unprofessional but nice people so I couldn't complain.
Their food is good - they have reasonable prices and quality. I hope they had better parking spots.
Went there for Valentines Day and our anniversary. The food was good. The quality of ingredients was very fresh. Our serve TK was very helpful and attentive. I never felt like I had to hound him down. He was always there for us and very respectful with a smile on his face. This was our first time eating here and I would eat here again just to try other dishes. I had the chicken potstickers which were a good portion. I also had the red curry but it wasn't too sweet. When I make mine at home it's a bit sweeter. It's okay though, everything else was very good. We tried the clear and loathing drink which was a bit tart but still its a drink that looks like water and that can be dangerous. lol. overall I give this place 4 stars. It was nice, clean, great servers, and quality food. Right next to other establishments and close to parking.
Great place to get cocktails and tasty Asian fare. Not a huge fan of the app based ordering.
I would give this place 0 stars if I could. The food may be halfway decent but a group of my 5 friends and I reserved a table here last night. I booked a table almost 3 days in advance knowing there were many of us and the reservation was confirmed. We showed up at 7:05 with a reservation time of 7:00 and by the time we talked to the host it was 7:13 (because we were waiting for the people in front of us to be seated). The host told us he gave away our table because there is only a 10 minute table holding time. I told him we were here and patiently waiting before the 10 minutes and were here at 7:05 but he refused to listen. I had even paid for parking and showed him my receipt as evidence we were here. I tried to reason with him as it was my birthday and had been waiting for this for several days but he simply yelled and screamed at me, claiming he could not do anything. My other friends got involved and he outright refused to seat us, and kept putting others on the waitlist. We talked to him at normal volumes and he continued to yell and scream at our entire group like a baby because we were 2 minutes late. When I asked to speak to his boss, he refused. When I asked for his name to report him, he wouldn't give it. I'm extremely disappointed in my experience here because I use to love this restaurant. I keep calling the restaurant to lodge a formal complaint because I believe he was not only extremely rude but also discriminatory.
I will never come back to this restaurant or recommend it to anyone and this place just lost one of their longtime customers.
Everything I've tried at Chao Baan has been good! We especially like the pad grapao, grilled eggplant, and new favorite khao soi.
Takeout packaging is relatively sustainable: paper bags, paper boxes and reusable plastic containers. I have never gotten anything in styrofoam, yay!
Have only ever gotten takeout/curbside, and staff is always friendly, courteous, and food is ready super fast. The business has also helped serve meals to those in need and actively promotes diversity in Saint Louis. Love the food, and these other choices make it a business I want to keep supporting even more.
My wife and I have been coming here for a few years, one of the few spots that we really enjoyed (5 star quality). Until recently. They are always understaffed and have a app system that no one wants to do. These management decisions created a stressful and weird atmosphere.
We tried to keep coming to see if it would change, but it hasn't.
If they get more people and get rid of the app ordering, we will 100% come back.
Food was ok. Service and prices were not. Had to order with our phones which was confusing and frustrating. Lack of help they said. While we were struggling to figure out the phone ordering system we watched employees on their phones. Frustrating.
Good food. But confusing menu. Happy hour food prices only apply if you by an alcoholic drink. As a non drinker, this is is kinda crazy. After getting my bill, i asked my server about this. Seems like no one knows why this is the way it is. TK the manager wasn’t very helpful and wasn’t willing to help me out with the over charge. Oh well :-/
Gotta say, i was impressed at one time by this place. But now they expect you to order completely from your phone. Without any service, it's akin to any much cheaper place. The food was average. They also don't do refills on anything, not even my sprite. Just brought me a can of sprite and a cup. Kind of odd.
Food was average but had several overly salty parts that made it pretty unappetizing. Ordering from the phone is the only option, and it kept having errors. Overall, the price doesn’t align with the quality of the food, unfortunately.
I enjoy coming to Chao Baan but this visit wasn’t the best. They have switched to an order on your phone template which when there are 4 at the table can get clunky… it’s almost as if everyone needs to order at the exact same time to get our food together. There was 1 waiter for the entire restaurant, which got busy shortly after we arrived. Waiter could not keep up, drinks came out slow ( at $14 bucks for a cocktail) I was hoping we could all toast at our table together, however, my drink was delayed. Water not filled, food orders came out sporadically, food was good but for the price, having to wait for drinks and do the on line order thing, it was a bit of a let down. I understand that finding wait staff, retaining wait staff is hard but the order in line platform doesn’t match their pricing for food snd especially cocktails!
Re think what kind of restaurant you want to be
Arrived at 8:40 to no one at front host desk. Waited for a few minutes only to be told they wouldn't seat us bc kitchen was already closed. Disappointing to be turned away when they state they are open till 9 pm.
Went to Seoul Taco instead and gave them our business!
I never rate places badly and normally give the benefit of the doubt since I work in restaurants, but this is the worst experience I have had in so long. The good was only okay and most stuff was dry. But even if the food was excellent, I still would never come back. The service was the worst I have ever experienced and we were the only table in the place. Our server was rude and seemed super annoyed that we were even there. She played on her phone the entire time. The only time she refilled our water was when we asked and she never came back to the table till guests of ours started walking out. I could not believe how rude and terrible the service was with us being the only customers. Would have ordered another bottle of wine if she ever came back to the table.
This was a great place for ambience. Server was nice but not attentive. Other than the spice request being switched on the entrees causing a unexpected sweat lol, the food was pretty good, the curry was Flavorful but wasnt very Creamy more so Brothy like soup but still 😋. I'd def come back. Just double check my order before it goes to the kitchen 😅.
Service was great but my food had zero flavor. I got pad see ew which is usually a great dish. My husband received the eggplant dish and said he liked the sauce but that was it. We had the spring rolls as an app and they were so greasy. Won’t be back, there’s much better Thai!
Not a good experience. Went in on a Saturday night about 7:30. The front was swarmed with food delivery services. There was 1 guy working the front entry way trying to get the delivery orders dispersed and seat people. We stood by the door for 7-10 minutes before the asked us what we were there for. He was clearly overwhelmed and was irritated. We were seated and it didn't get any better. You have to order your food through your cell phone on an App, drinks and everything. The only time you see someone working there is when they drop off your drinks and food. There was 1 guy doing all of the drink and food delivery for the whole restaurant. He was not engaging when he dropped the drinks and food off, he dropped off the orders and left quickly. We got our appetizers literally 1 min before the entree came out. We ordered Pot Stickers which were gross. Overcooked and chewy, I saw the waiter take them out of some heating device and they must have been sitting in there all day. Our entrees weren't any better. Food was very Salty and not enjoyable. Freshness of the food was not acceptable for the price. I don't understand the 4.5 star rating foe this place?? Horrible service, not welcoming, bad food, and nobody cared. Don't waste your time or money here. 2 people working the whole restaurant.
We have been coming to Chao Baan for over a year. We have always loved the food! It’s delicious without being overly heavy like many restaurants in the area. It is reasonably priced as well. The food, ambience, and wait staff has always been top notch.
I am taking off a star because they recently switched to an online ordering system even when dining in. The app (toast) kept glitching when we were trying to order, forces you to give your info including email address to a third party, and leads to less in person attention from servers. It seems to be a way for management to pay fewer servers while forcing the servers who are working to pick up slack from having fewer overall workers. I’m not sure if the restaurant is struggling or if they are just trying to scrimp and save, but I do wish they would go back to a normal ordering system. Until then I’ll probably just order online and get take out.
The food is great. However it’s an order online concept. No human interaction. No “hi how are you” or “thanks for coming”When our order was missing it took quite a while to fix. I want to love this place. The food is always good. But the robotic atmosphere will keep us from dining in again. All in all a tasty but very weird place to go.
Go somewhere smaller and less-known, you'll get a cheaper and more delicious meal. The current average review is 4.6 on Chao Baan. I think it's closer to a 4.0, and a 3.4 if you factor in price. The food is not bad, it's just not worth the price. I'd like more generous portions at this price. To be critical, the potstickers I got were not good. They had way too little filling. It felt like I was just eating a chewy fried wonton.
Foods is good looking but taste normal. There are fur in the fires chicken, while if the fur counts as a “special”, I didn’t buy it. Overall, I don’t think I will come again.
Excellent Thai place that isn't too crowded and has tasty and visually appealing food. I would avoid the pad thai since it's pretty average, but the rest of the dishes are good and the portions are big so they're also filling. I would mention that when I visited, the AC was broken, so it was really stuffy in the restaurant. However, the service there is amazing, always attentive and bringing you water so it wasn't too much of a burden. Would recommend and the prices are totally fair!
Great place
I paid $100 dollars for food poisoning. I’m not from St. Louis, so the car ride home was pretty agonizing. We had to stop the car about 7 or 8 times so that I could throw up. Even after I got home, I stayed up all night vomiting. I went to this place another time about two years ago, it was delicious. They definitely have downgraded. I do not recommend.
The service was fine. The Tod Man was absolutely disgusting. My husband could not even swallow it. He said it tasted like plastic. I ordered the Thai fried rice minus the egg, protein and beans. It was cool...non complaints. My husband ordered the Thai fried rice minus the long beans but with chicken. Our beverages (Coke & Sprite) were canned...major downer. The ambience is chill, clean and nice for a casual meal.
First, the food is excellent. Second, Ava gives excellent service and she's generally just a pleasure to be around. Friendly and gives great suggestions. Thank you for consistently great experiences, Ava!
Very good! Recommended! Wait time wasn't too bad, food was very good, and the water tasted good! Very nice staff! 🥰
Had an excellent meal and very good service. I do have a couple of very minor complaints.
I arrived at 4 pm for a 4 pm reservation, and the door was locked. A staff member came to open the door, stating, "We're open, I just haven't unlocked the door." 🤷 She was not wearing a mask despite signs on the walls asking customers to wear masks when away from their tables. Also, the table where we sat was sticky.
I had a green tea, the veggie spring rolls, and the cucumber salad. My dining companion had the pad Thai with tofu. We were both very pleased with our meals.
The restrooms were clean and well-stocked. Food came out quickly. Their outdoor seating looks welcoming but a storm came and went while we were there. Maybe next time! I also appreciate the Pride and BLM window art.
The food here is outstanding. Try any or all of it, it’s all good. The beef nom yak is crazy with all of the flavors that come out in it.
Great services, friendly awesome
Overall good experience. Food is solid. Asked for spicy and came back mild. Cocktail is good but pricey.
Loved my experience. They make pretty good cocktails and the food is on point. If you are in Delmar and looking for Thai place. You must visit.
Authentic Thai food at a reasonable price! 😋
Tasty and spicy Thai food available in a very popular location.
Best Thai food. EVER.
This place was amazing. My standard go to for Thai food is the Pad See Ew and the dish here was amazing. I got it with the fried tofu which provided a good texture and the noodles were very tasty. They were quick with the curbside pickup and it was a very good dinner. I was a bit sad that they were out of stock of two of the appetizers I wanted to try but they had it listed in the toast app so it wasn’t a issue when ordering.
Ate there for the first time tonight. The food was amazing! I love the jasmine rice. Will be going back often for sure
Thai food here tasted different from all other Thai places we tried in the US. We had pad see ew and beef nam tok and we don't recommend them at all. The beef dish was too sour, can hardly finish half of it. The pad see ew was my Thai favorite at all previous restaurants, but here it had the annoying taste from the veggies :( The price is $$ too :(
Good beef nom tak but I think it only had cilantro despite cilantro mind as advertised in the menu. Also I wish it was just mint to begin with. The mezcal Thai boi cocktail is top notch but looks sad like pale wine without a garnish.
I love Callie.
My husband picked up our order and was ignored and not greeted by the woman working the bar. Her name was Callie. She was the only visable employee. No hello, may I help you, nothing! Someone came from the kitchen and was able to help with our $68 takeout order. This was our frist time trying this spot. The pad thai was dry, the wings were fried in old grease, and they were greasey!! This restaurant will not make it without great customer service and fresh food. We will never order from here again. A waste of money and time. I do not recommend this restaurant. Hate I had to give it 1 star, but our money matters!
Always a delicious experience at Chao Baan. The food is so FRESH and flavorful. Employees are kind and efficient. Thank you chao baan!!!
In my opinion Chao Baan is the 2nd best Thai place in STL after Pearl Cafe. Really good, spicy, flavorful dishes. Always consistently good! Curbside is fast, well packaged. The dining room has great ambiance and I’ve never had a problem with service. Highly recommended, we get it all the time!
Sausage was mediocre, about the same as any grocery store sausage. The Tom Yum soup was overly sour and diluted down, lacking flavor.
The worst part was the Panang curry. The potatoes and peppers were cut into these gigantic wedges that made it hard to consume. They weren’t soft enough. The curry sauce itself was a generic creamy liquidy substance that somehow wasn’t appetizing. The beef was hard to chew.
The only reason why I didn’t give one star was because they at least put my food out on time.
Update: I love the food!!
My favorites: mieng kham, Tom yum with shrimp, pad see-ew, fried golden pompano, and drink--tokay boomer.
Not many Thai restaurants offer mieng kham, I just love the taste and texture combination of the lime, chili, peanut, and sauce, wrapped in a leaf, yum!
The pad see-ew noodles have a soft and fresh texture that are easily distinguishable and superior to most Thai restaurants.
The golden pompano--I'm speechless because it's so awesome!! I love the sprinkles of Thai chili.
Lastly, I newly discovered their tokay boomer with lychee, lime, basil---so freakin' refreshing!
Best tasting Thai food of Missouri! I'm from the Pacific northwest and have had a good range Asian food. I miss a good quality restaurant very much and happy this restaurant is up to my expectations. Keep up the good cookin'!
Pad see ew was good
Wait staff was inattentive. Not able to customize spice level in pad Thai and Tom yum soup. Not sure what to make of the sweet dried shrimp wraps with concealed chili peppers. Hot tea comes pre-sweetened weather or not you asked for sugar. This underwhelming meal came at bit of a markup compared to other Thai restaurants in the area. Apparently they must have some good dishes because there were a few people in there and some good write ups but I did not find them.
Worst pad thai I've ever had. Completely dry, flavorless with NO vegetables at all, not even green onions? If Kraft made pad thai this is how it would taste.
What a wonderful place. Great staff. Super friendly manager, TK, he's such a great guy. I am always given amazing recommendations to try. I had the Khao Soi tonight and it was super super good. Check them out!
Ordered delivery and was very disappointed. The sticky rice was inedible. It was stuck together like a rock. The panang was chunky like an old pudding that had been left out and was incredibly bland, not spicy at all. They were polite when I called and seemed to know there was an issue with their quality lately, but didn't take any steps to repair the situation.
Good Menu, and cocktails. But the slower and less than expected service took one star off the 4 stars this place deserved.
Good Thai food in the Grove
Good food
Love the lettuce wraps
Would not recommend this place if you are trying something new. The menu was completely different from what I’ve seen at other Asian restaurant so I decided to try something new. Completely disgusting!!!! I tried to order something else in exchange for what I didn’t want anymore and the manager refused to let me exchange my food. I had to pay $60 for some nasty food I didn’t even eat that smelled horrible!!!!! Don’t go if you never ate here cause the food nasty and they still gone make you pay!
Couldn't have been more impressed by the quick and friendly service. Our waitress was so kind and helpful with the menu -- very knowledgeable and thoughtful about the level of spice I could handle.
The food, herbs and veggies were fresh, delicious and authentic. My husband's favorite dish was the Pad Grapao 🔥😍.
He suggests it to all of our friends (even though we live an hour from the establishment 😂) and hasn't stopped mentioning going back since our last visit.
We were immediately seated with no crowd; temperatures were checked upon arrival. Outdoor seating was also provided, however the ambiance inside was beautiful and very romantic. Definitely a great date night restaurant.
It wasn't crowded at all; and the food came out quickly.
If you're in the area, you should definitely give them a try!
If you like Thai food, you'd be missing out if you have not visited Chao Baan. All of the traditional fare is available (pad thai, pad see ew, curry), but they have put their own touch on multiple dishes with amazing results. It's worth noting that their portions are less than what you would expect from a typical Thai restaurant, but not to the point where you feel unfulfilled. Be sure to order one of their signature drinks and you'll walk away happy.
We used to love dining in and checking out the new menu items and trying new things but have switched to take out since the pandemic started. We enjoy the opportunity to support a local restaurant that is working hard to keep their employees and community safe while creating high quality and delicious food! Thank you for doing a great job and providing excellent customer service! We've had the Spicy Kee Mao Noodles most recently and it was quite enjoyable!
Can you say Flavor Town?? DE-LISHOUS!!!
Excellent food, fast service. We've only ever gotten curbside during the pandemic, and the food is always phenomenal. Our orders are always correct. Can't say enough good. I can't wait to eat there in person.
