Charming Elephant is the first Lao restaurant in Baltimore!
We hope to bring Lao food to the streets of Baltimore, to embody Lao culture through our authentic cuisine, and to bring the warmth of a sticky rice basket!
Decided to try this Laotian / Thai restaurant for Baltimore Restaurant Week. Parking down this road but if the stars align then you are in luck.
It is a cozy restaurant with pleasant decor. The wait staff were courteous and helpful.
We did the restaurant week specials as well as ordered off the menu.
For apart we had the Tom Kha soup which was flavorful with the right balance of spice and tart.
The Nahm Khao was excellent.
For the main course we had the Green curry Short rib , a Pad See Ew and Larb,
This was where I felt the food did not fully deliver. While flavorful, it lacked the flavor burst that one expects . The larb was not as tart as excepted. And the Pad See Ew while packed with vegetables and protein did not have the slight sweet profile one expects from the dish. The green curry was good with the meat tender .
Desert was sticky rice with mango that was well executed. The rice was warm and flavorful with a hint of sweetness that allowed the flavors of the mango to shine through.
I must mention that the Baltimore Restaurant Week menu was worth it as it had a choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages . We had the mojito which was delicious.
All in all it was a good meal. Worth trying for Restaurant Week. .
It might be a do over.
I ordered through door dash. My food was still hot when it arrived. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and shrimp spicy. It wasn’t overly spicy, the flavor was there. This was my first ever trying it and I wasn’t disappointed. Also I got the mango sticky rice it was sweet at refreshing.
Please go here! My friend and I stopped by for restaurant week and plan on returning because the food was so delicious. I was hesitant because I hadn't heard of this place before but what a lovely surprise.
The green curry with beef short rib, the jerky, and the casava cakes were highlights. Would highly recommend and can't wait to go back.
P.S. The music was so relaxing 😌.
DO NOT miss this gorgeous restaurant, as it is blends into its building along the main road of Boston Street!! It is like a hidden Gem! The atmosphere is AMAZING! It is such a vibe! The food was delicious! Service was spectacular! Even on a busy day like Valentine’s Day they were so attentive! It seemed like there was no wait for anything at all from walking in the door! And they’re so good they had a packed house yet it wasn’t overly crowded! If there were 10 stars to give I definitely would!
This restaurant was empty at prime dinner time when we showed up – usually a huge red flag warning you to go somewhere else. Alas, it was not my decision so our party of nine seated ourselves and waited over five minutes for a server to approach our table. Service was rather informal. For example, instead of giving each diner eating utensils, they were dumped on the table for self-service distribution. Things went downhill from here on with a delay of over 20 minutes before being served after ordering. There was only one waiter in the restaurant, and I believe he was also the chef since we rarely saw him except for quick order taking and food serving; a one-man operation? Over the space of 90 minutes, I noticed only three people come in to pick up a takeout order and two other customers who were seated for dinner.
The food was mediocre and some of it ill-prepared. The roasted pork belly was woefully overcooked making it so hard as to be inedible. The pad thai was also overcooked and the cookies given to us at the end of our meal were rock hard tooth crackers. For some reason, the server chose to wear a giant ambiance killing black mask even though his contact with us was very limited and at some distance.
Despite its name, this place was not at all charming and with a wealth of restaurants to choose from in the Baltimore area, I would definitely avoid this place.
First off, this place was a gem in the middle of Canton. You can tell that the owners put effort into making this place a hub for southeast Asian food. We started out with the spring rolls and loved how fresh they were, along with the sauce. I preferred the drunken noodles and enjoyed the level of medium spiciness (I usually get spicy but wanted to really get a taste for the food). The Tom Kai soup was a perfect balance of tart and creaminess from the coconut milk. Service was great and our waitress was very attentive. Overall, I highly recommend this family owned establishment!
It was a great night out with my family and delicious food. Truly enjoyed the atmosphere and the food.

I love coming here! Genuinely have never gotten anything I dislike. The crab rangoons, pork belly khao piek, and the pad see ew are my favorite though!! The staff are also very friendly and I have always had pleasant interactions with them. :) Definitely recommend coming here if you are able to swing by!

Omg this is my first time trying Loas food and the food was amazing, the papaya salad was to die for I couldn’t stop eating it even though I don’t like spicy food. I had the laap fried chicken and it was delicious the season was perfect. The drinking noodles was so sgood. I will definitely coming back to try other things in the manu. If you are the Baltimore area you should give this place a try, and the service was amazing 10/10
I completely recommend this place! Especially the Khao Piak (soup) w/ pork belly and both types of egg rolls! The service is great, the location is beautiful, definitely a must if you’re in the area!

Pretty disappointed. They use a digital menu but didn't update that some items are not served... What's the point of using a digital menu???
I had Kapoon and I would say it's okay, not anything particularly good.
A utensil was dirty when served.
In general, it's okay as neighbor's shop, not anything more than that.
I REALLY wanted to like this place. The atmosphere and customer service were great. Honestly, I was disappointed with the pricing. As a frequent tofu orderer, i've never seen a restaurant upcharge more for tofu than beef, steak, or chicken...and the tofu wasn't even fried (just a personal preference). With the tofu upcharge the dishes were rather expensive. The flavor of my basil rice dish was pretty good, but the green curry wasn't the best i've had (on the thinner side). I may return to try something different like a drink or dessert, but I can't justify the price of an entree when there's cheaper competitors nearby.
My first time trying Lao food and it didn’t disappoint! Both the meal and dessert were delicious, highly recommend checking this place out.
Visited here while on a family trip & we all LOVED our food. This was my first time eating at a Lao restaurant & I was truly blown away by the flavor pallet of every dish.
The ambiance of the place was cool. You don’t even feel like you’re in Bmore. I’ll definitely be back before I leave town.
Ordered the chicken drunken noodle, Tom yum soup, & khao something. Every single dish was unappetizing. I ended up throwing everything away. I had high hopes for this place but i think I’ll just stick with Thai Street.
So happy to have discovered Charming Elephant! TikTok sent us here, and we will ABSOLUTELY return. The food was fresh, spicy and wonderful. Good vibes, good food. Loved it.
If you’re looking for comfort food or have a cold in the winter months order their chicken and rice noodle soup (Khao Piak). You won’t regret it!
Ordered delivery which was very tasty. The only complaint is that for the price, the portions are very small. For $25 per person I would expect to have a little more than what I received. I ordered Fried rice with shrimp additional charge for shrimp which is fine, but was barely enough for 2 people. Larb was tasty as well but for almost $17 if I had known how much I was getting I would've gotten something else or another fried rice. The shrimp egg roll was worth it for the price.
Ventured into this restaurant and was so delighted. The food is unbelievable, and if you're looking for a family-owned restaurant, here's your place!!
Quiet, peaceful, and good food. Reasonably priced.
I got the vegetarian banh Mi. I love these sandwiches but I did not love this one. I do appreciate the option on the menu but it would be nice if it came with a vegan mayo! It was decent but not the best I’ve had. I would really like to try some curry’s and noodle dishes next time to get a better take on the quality of the dishes.
Oh but the butterfly pea tea was very good!
Pad Kapow was watery, which is what happens when you just throw a bunch of frozen ingredients into a pan. Pho tasted like grocery store pho too.
Food was OK. Atmosphere was bleak... nice setting, but please play some music or something so we don't have to listen to the hum of the fridges and everyone else conversation and/or the blender from the bar. The biggest issue was that they don't have a printed menu and you have to play with your phone at the dinner table. Ugh... nobody wants to scroll thru a menu, please print them. You also don't get a paper check that you can review prior to paying, just a server with a phone in her hand. To top that off, the bill was incorrect and they overcharged me on 2 items that I only got to see after I got their email receipt. The Corona was $6 on the bill, but $5 on the menu. Drunken noodles with tofu was fitty cents overcharge. $1.50 total. Not much but c'mon... I would call it a mistake, but since I wasn't able to review the bill before paying, I'll call it "stealing". (see pictures). Prices were kind of high for the below avg serving size. I over-tipped for getting ripped off.
The food is fine. I had cucumber salad, pork belly homemade rice noodles, and crispy rice salad. They need to replace outdated furniture and make it more appealing for customers to come in and experience lao cuisine. The location is great. The space inside has nice exposed brinks. The service also needs to be trained on taking order and bringing out the condiments without having to ask for it. It's mom & pop place, so I don't expect a whole lot, but this comment is to help them improve and hopefully get them more customers.
The drunken noodles were the best I’ve ever had. And the roti with coconut ice cream was INCREDIBLE.
I ordered the drunken noodle. Very tasty. Better than alot of the Thai restaurants in Bmore. But the portion size is childish. I took a pic of the container next to the napkins they gave. And no the container is not deep. It was probably like 5 noodles in there. Sad. For $20...come on.
Friendly SE Asian cuisine.
I’m not sure why there are so many whiny people in the reviews. I’ve eaten here 3 times, and I got a door dash $90 order worth for FOUR people with amazing food! I’ve always been a fan of ethnic foods, and this one has to be one of my most recent top favorites. If you expect elite spoiled “rich” treatment, go to a restaurant that charges 10x extra. Seriously, grow up. This food is incredible and I can’t wait to take my mom here when she visits!
We get carry out here fairly often and just about everything we e tried has been amazing. Pad see ew was the best I’ve ever had, lao sausage is AMAZING; love the sausage banh mi as well. My husband band loves the pork krapow Lao spicy too. He especially loves this place bc they actually make the food super spicy the way he likes it.
Only downside is it’s not worth dining in. Food is great either way but service is very very slow, take tables out of order, and the bathroom was a mess. Like dinner napkins in the box for toilet paper AND hand towels; big old spider webs that had been there for a hot minute at least. We tried dining in a couple times but just stick to carry out.
Overpriced, average taste.
Pretty bad. We ordered Pad Thai and Lao Sausage, Sticky Rice & Jeow Mak Lin. Without question the rice and Pad Thai were old and dried out, first time in a awhile a place has so boldly given me old, dry, hard rice, and the price tag here is not cheap.
EDIT:
For anyone reading, I wanted to address the owner’s response to this review as it’s patently false we were 30 minutes late. We were actually around 5 minutes early. It’s wild and super concerning that you would just lie about that and that you’re so combative and quick to gas light.
For $30, there is a certain expectation of quality that should be met. The rice we received was hard and dry. As anyone who has ever made rice knows, even if we had been 30 minutes late, it wouldn’t result in the rice being in that condition.
AMAZING FOOD! The food was absolutely incredible, super delicious, tons of flavor. The restaurant is very pretty, cool ambiance. The service was excellent. Honestly was probably the best meal I have ever had in Baltimore!
Pad Thai noodles had a nice flavor but were soggy. They did not come with lime or sprouts which left it tasting flat and salty.

A great "Thai Ice Tea" should remind you of Jupiter. Let me explain.
The perfect Thai ice tea comes with a distinct zone of tea that reminds you of the sedimentary layer at the bottom of the ocean. On top of which rest ice and condensed milk. If you can see the ice cubes in the layer of sedimentary tea, the tea ain't strong. However, if the layer of tea is a sense of elements or shapes of the ice, it's nice, dark and rich.
Now once you get the tea, it looks like two distinct layers. The sedimentary zone of tea, upon which milk sits and the sides of slender ice cubs can be seen. It's at this juncture that we do the next test.
1. Get your straw.
2. Unwrap the straw and plung it straight down into the tea.
When you have just the right amount of tea, ice and milk what will result is a glass that looks like the surface of Jupiter, a la the photo below. A distinct Milky white surface, the bleeds from cray white, to tan with with hint of orange, before plunging back into a black that reminds your eyes of the flavor of coffee.
And that's how you know you have a great glass of team. And this one, is simply delicious as it looks.
Bon appetite!
What a GREAT place to eat at and the service are very nice. No doubt, hands down this place is one of the Best Laotian Restaurants in Baltimore. You won’t be disappointed. MUST TRY!!! 👍🤤
Major Disclaimer: this place gives out free drinks to anyone that gives a 5 star review, so just be aware of that when you read the reviews!!
With that being said the food overall is really good, the tofu garden rolls are large and fresh and their pad Thai is flavorful but a bit more on the sweet side. I would say that it does need more spice for the medium heat but if you like spicy go with the Lao spicy. The atmosphere is cozy and the service was also excellent.
Also I like that they have a vegetarian menu which is convenient for those who don’t eat meat!
I love this restaurant. Great food and drinks every time!!
May be good for other things but they green curry is not it.
The vibe in here was very cozy and everything tasted wonderful
so many veg options + a full vegan menu, really want to try their boba cocktails! really good thai tea, too 🫶
Tanya was a great server , the vibes were everything, me and my friends came and she made it worth while 😊 thank you Tanya 😘
Incredible meal! Highly recommend the Tom Khem and Pork Belly Khao Piak. Will absolutely be coming back here!
Food is delicious. Got the Laotian Sausage Bahn Mi and had a really excellent lunch.
Tanya was an excellent server and the food was really great!!
Tanya was an amazing server and the food was excellent!!

A great local spot with authentic food that you don’t often see!
Very cute restaurant, wonderful food. A little warm inside but the generous lunch portion more than made up for this
This was a great experience for my first time! We went for a friend’s graduation dinner and the server was so friendly and quick to bring delicious food. I recommend this for everyone!
Absolutely delicious! I’ve eaten here a few times and have always been impressed. The drinks are delicious too and the happy hour is a great price. I came with some friends for a graduation on a Wednesday, and was quickly served.
Get the drunken noodles
Loved my noodles and soup ❤️
Waitress was very very nice. 👌🏾
I was so happy a Lao place opened in Baltimore. I no longer need to go down to DC or NoVA. The food is great (the lao sausage and jeow bang is a must), place is clean and service has been consistently great. Once I ordered a papaya salad too spicy (my mistake) and they were very kind to replace it with a less spicy version after I've eaten a decent amount. The soup noodles are good and they have the more familiar Thai dishes as well. This is one of our go-to place in Baltimore.
This was the restaurant I asked my gf to be my gf and the food was delicious 😋
It was the first restaurant when i first visit and now my husband EUA and i love it so it reserve a special place in my heart and in my Marriage. now every time that i think in pad Thai is the first place in my mind
friendly staff, and amazing food! i have a great time whenever i’m here :)
The food here is soooo yummy, I really love their Khao Piak with pork belly
As a vegetarian, the number of veggie options were great and its a great family-style restaurant.
Delicious Laotian food served in a spacious and homey setting. We came in a big group and the server managed to handle all our orders very quickly. During my visit, I enjoyed the Goi Pa (herby and well flavored tilapia pieces) and the Khao Piek (lighter flavored but incredibly comforting).
It was very good! The fried rice was exceptional! The drunken noodles were also good! Recommended highly.
Ordered the tofu garden wraps & vegan fried rice with tofu and didn’t like either one.
The tofu in both items was squishy and plain, didn’t taste good at all. The wraps has cilantro (which i absolutely hate) & some other herb that wasn’t good, so i had to pick those out.
There should be an option to order them without certain ingredients to personalize it.
Came here on a Thursday night, the place was pretty quiet. Staff were friendly and the food came out quickly. I got a cocktail and my husband got a beer. We shared the spring rolls and got the eggplant curry and green curry (definitely spicy!) - everything was cooked well and super tasty. If I had room for dessert, I would have loved to try some of them because they looked so good on their menu. I'll have to come back another day to try!
Such interesting food options right in the heart of Canton and fells. Will definitely be back.
Food and service was amazing!
Food is fantastic had the kua mee and pad see ew, and Tom yum soup. Loa coffee also fire.
good
Dillon was great!
Amazing food, beautiful looking place, and amazing presentation! Cant wait to come back and try more of the vegan food. They have a lengthy list!
Charming is definitely an understatement!! Charming Elephant brings the flavor and culture of Laos street food to the streets of Baltimore. The nation of Laos is one that in itself is a charming country but not a well known country.
It is primely located on a popular street across from the harbor, where the congestion of people and traffic are manageable.
The ambience is cute and has the traditional Lao script along with traditional pieces of art and beliefs of Laos.
The food is by far the most authentic Lao food in Maryland!! Lao food is considered by most Americans similar to Thai food and while that is somewhat true, Lao food is generally more tart and not as spicy. Lao food also their own unique twist on classical Thai dishes such as tom som. In Lao, it is call thum maak houng which translates to “pounded papaya plant”. In traditional Lao meals, we more often use cucumber (maak thang) over papaya and our ingredients in addition to appearance slight differs.
Being able to use my native tongue with the server was such a joy being Laos communities in America are so far and few. My server was so sweet and thoughtful. I watched as she bussed table, hosted and sat guest, interacted and suggested dishes, and served with fluidity.
And the food!!!! The food is spot on culturally accurate!!! It was like having dinner at my grandparents house. I had the Laos sausage and jiew maak len (tomato “salsa” is the best description), a traditional side that accompanies a protein. When I was a kid, my grandpa would make this with his home grown veggies and I would dip my sticky rice in it and have it as an after school snack. The flavor profile of the jiew transported me back to 1992, sitting cross legged at our low table watching power rangers with my siblings and snacking on sticky rice and jiew with grandma’s sausages.
Jiew maak len is a tomatoes base that has been roasted and ground in a mortar and pestle with added ingredients such ask cilantro, garlic, peppers, fish sauce and lime.
Laos sausages are typically pork that has been sweetened and infused with herbs like lemongrass, cilantro, watercress, lime leaves, garlic, oyster sauce, lime, and fish sauce.
If you’re seeing a trend with lime and fish sauce, you can understand how Lao food is different from Thai food.
I also enjoy thum maak thang (a spin off of papaya salad made with cucumber) and naam khao. Naam khao is fried rice balls that are broken up and mixed with pickled pork sausage, green onions, fish sauce and lime, and eaten with lettuce like a wrap. It is a savory dish and the lettuce balances out the dense fried rice while also toning down the pickling flavor that naam generally carries.
If I could give Charming Elephant more than 5 stars I would, not only because I’m so proud to be a first generation Lao-American, but because they hit it out of the park with the traditional flavors and brought another charm into the Charm City!!
Great service- the waitress was super nice and gave great recommendations. This was my second time here, and it truly is charming! 🐘
Incredible and authentic Laotian food.
Tasty and unpretentious!
Charming Elephant is a family owned restaurant. A little treasure in Baltimore. My friend and I truly enjoyed ourselves. The Pho is absolutely delicious and healing. I loved the Buddha Alter and interior decorations. It is very clean and orderly. The family was very friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to coming back for more! Thank you so much. 😊
I came here on a Friday at 10PM for their extended hours. It was my first time coming here after being recommended by a friend. I wasn’t disappointed! I ordered the khao piek w/ pork belly and it was so flavorful. The service was quick and friendly too. I will definitely be back again soon!
The oil they use for cooking pad Thai has a distinctive smell and taste which we disliked
It might be the worst meal I have ever had! We ordered pho and some noodles with omelet. Pho was tasteless, broth is like oily water, and noodles were very sweet.
Great food! Fried chicken and banh mi were the best :)
I order from here waaaayyy too often, but they never disappoint. Quick service and turnaround. Delicious food. Amazing fried pork belly. Great curry. I could go on, but just order and see for yourself.
The food was awesome and the staff was very friendly .
This is a takeout joint. The food was not good. And prices too high for the servings received.
Been twice. Service was a little slow both time. The food was amazing both times! Will happily go back again.
Beautiful interior and amazing soups!
They ate
The best loatian in Baltimore!
Very good service. Love the food!
Very great experience, server was attentive and brought us water as soon as we sat down, there’s a lot variety on the menu
Loved this place
This was my mother and I’s first time at the Charming Elephant. It was an overall good experience. Our waitress was nice. Everything taste good. We had the Drunken Noodles, the Crying Tiger Steak, Shrimp egg rolls and the Lao Pho. As well as a Thai Tea, really enjoyed that.
Excellent dinner spot! Our server was attentive and helpful, the food was all delicious, great vegetarian options, and the restaurant was cute and pleasant.
Kapoon broth was creamy and spicy with well-cooked noodles but it seemed a bit overcooked and over-salted. Adding lime juice seemed to help cut through the saltiness. Unfortunately, the chicken pieces were very tough and stringy, which left my jaw feeling a bit sore after the fact.
Crying Tiger Steak was decently seasoned and tender.
On a nearby table, they advertise a free drink for a five star review. Drinks are expensive and full of ice, so I can see why this offer is so appealing to people.
Still disappointed that tea is just hot water and a store bought tea pouch probably from Costco that they charge $3.50 to serve it in a big teapot. 😩
Service was polite but gave NPC vibes. Lots of other Asian places set out the plates and utensils for you and treat you like a welcomed guest, no matter how busy they are, compared to here. I think I’ll stick to those places.
Amazing place , very nice welcoming
Waiter was attentive & polite. Very welcoming place.
Great food!
10/10 RECOMMEND!!!
Great service and welcoming environment!
Our waiteress was amazing
Very nice atmosphere, food was very good
Super delicious lao food! The papaya salad is so yummy and the moo grob is so nice a crispy
Great food and service. Know that Thum Plate easily serves two ppl. Very filling and satisfying.
I’m a very big fan of authentic Asian noodles and Charming Elephant is very delicious and authentic. I’ve gotten the Khao Piek and Kapoon and they are amazing
This is my regular lunch spot. The staff is always attentive. The food and drinks are amazing. One of the most underrated spots in Baltimore.
It is the first Lao restaurant I have visited. Very cozy place and nice selection of food. The staffs are friendly.
Truly charming restaurant with good Laotian food and great service. This is a dope Laotian restaurant. Wife loved the butterfly pea tea some much she ordered a box of the tea online on the way home. We ordered the Thum mua platter, laap wings, a charming margarita, and fried rice. Everything came out hot and delicious. We wished we had sauce for the platter though. Other than that, we really enjoyed this restaurant. Will be back again soon.
Quick service! Awesome vibes and cute aesthetic. We love the K-pop😆🩷
Super welcoming and friendly staff. Quick service. Nice ambiance.
Where do I even begin. Hands down best Laotian restaurant in canton
I've been coming here at for months now, and the food is always so comforting!! Such a perfect date night spot
Nice atmosphere in spacious restaurant, living up it its name. Food options are great for people wanting to try Laotian cuisine. Delicious food.
As a loyal customer, always enjoy their service and the rare and delicious Laotian food in Baltimore!
good
Good fast service place - enjoyed the sausage the most & their drinks all look beautiful.
Smelly food :/, unfortunately not that tasty, flavorful but funky. I have had Laotian food before and this was nowhere near as good. Not deserving of such a high rating in my opinion.
My waiter rain was very polite and friendly
The waiter was really nice! 😊 they food 👌🏾
This place has the best soups!
Great atmosphere and polite staff
Some of the best south east asian in the city. Noodles,
Amazing food and great Thai tea. The Laos sausage is phenomenal, we order it everytime.
The Lao sausage with jaew mak lin is my favorite. The papaya salad is spicy and delicious with pickled fish.
We order from here all the time because they have lots of vegan options. This last time even though we chose vegan dishes, they both came with eggs in it. Tried to call to let them know, and their phone number doesn’t work. Just very disappointed, knowing previously it was a place we really liked.
I love this restaurant but I might not visit too often in the winter. It was very cold inside. We ate fast so we could leave. The food is always delicious and the customer service is always 10/10. Sometimes it's hard to find parking but it's worth driving around to try to find a spot.
great place for authentic lao food! friendly staff as well
Excellent food and services, will definitely come again!
