Relaxed, family-operated establishment offering traditional Thai specialties as well as beer & wine.
Tan Thai is one of my favorite restaurants in Southern Indiana. The food is fresh and delicious and the service is always speedy. The owners take great pride in every dish they make and you can find a lot of healthy options on the menu. My favorite dishes are the ginger chicken and green beans and the red coconut curry with chicken.
HIGHLY recommend TanThai to everyone I meet! This is the only place in New Albany to get truly authentic Thai food. It is delicious and provides such a cool variation to your normal dinner date. The staff is incredibly kind and willing to explain anything you might not understand. Good portion sizes, well cooked, authentic, 10/10 would eat every day of the week!
Lackluster service and very small food portions. I had a green curry dish with chicken, and it literally had 6 small pieces of chicken floating in the curry sauce with some type of yellow squash. My husband's chicken and broccoli had the same amount of chicken. The dishes would probably fit in a saucer size plate. They were that small! The soda came in a red wine glass filled 3/4 full of ice, and not once did our server come to check and see if everything was okay or if we needed refills. I had to go up to the counter to pay since it didn't seem like she was ever going to check on us or bring us our check. Too bad because the food itself was not awful. Not saying it was great, either. This one will be a once and done visit for us. Nothing redeemable about this experience. No wonder we were the only ones eating there.
Recently reopened under new ownership. Pleasant experience . Nicely decorated. Very pleasant waitress. Not as expansive menu as compared to some Thai restaurants but what I had was good. I plan to return again in the future👍
Probably best to do take out. Wait staff did not visit table to do refills or ask if anything else needed to be ordered.
The Pad Ki Mao looked like just rice noodles in brown sauce. I’m used to seeing color and the individual elements but it looked unappetizing when set on my table. I asked for a step below Thai spicy but it was not spicy at all. I’m disappointed as I would love to support this local Thai spot but I’ve had this dish in so many places to confidently and sadly review this one as the worst. I didn’t grab a picture to show.
This restaurant is amazing. I went here craving a curry, and ordered the Massaman Curry; it was delicious. As of Fall of 2021, this restaurant is definitely ideal for carry out orders due to COVID.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY !!
My first time to the restaurant. Took my stepmom which is from Thailand . The food does not taste like authentic Thai food. The owner was very rude. She said you have to wear a mask while sitting at the table unless you have food in your mouth. BTW. We were the only people in the restaurant the whole time we were there, now we know why. When my dad mentioned the strict mask policy their restaurant has, she literally said she didn't care if people came to their restaurant they can go somewhere else she didn't care. With the horrible food and even worse staff "owner", will never go back. DO NOT RECOMMEND this place.
As a reference, I have never at in there restaurant and have always ordered it as takeout. This restaurant to me is an excellent place to order some spicy curry. They have 3 levels being mild medium and hot. Me being me, I order it as hot as they will do it and their reaction from the first time I asked this was, "Are You Sure?" That was music to my ears. On eating my curry it was indeed pretty spicy, but not overwhelmingly spicy as some restaurants do when spiced to the max. The coconut curry had a sweet after flare to go with the burn it delivered. My only complaint would be the quality of the stock which is a more water based curry, which for myself doesn't stick well with the rick it is served with and made it more like a curry soup or ramen.
Horrible food. We ordered pad Thai which you think any Thai food restaurant could make. Wrong. It tasted like over cooked spaghetti with peanut butter. Awful. I would give them no stars if it was an option.
I’m not a person who generally posts bad reviews but this was egregious enough for me. Ordered the Thom-Yum soup large with Shrimp for $12.50 and was given 3 pieces of shrimp. When I inquired as to why just 3 pieces, I was told it was due to the size and weight of said shrimp.
When I exclaimed that it cost $3 dollars more than the chicken version, I was schooled on shrimpeconomics by the lady at the counter. Not a way to run a business.
Should have gone to Onion Tea House instead.
Very fresh, and flavor was wonderful
Food delicious. Service a little cold
This was the worst restaurant I have visited in many years!! I don't know how can people give 4 stars to this restaurant. Food was gross and service was terrible!!! I totally regretted to dine here. I still have a disgusting feeling when I remember the dishes .It's the nightmare level. I had been to many Thai restaurants and this is THE worst!! The service was terrible as well. It is so much o the mystery how this place stay in a business !?
My meal was so spice. Perfect.
Curry was good.
Very good
Fantastic food and the staff is very kind.
Delivery through GrubHub delayed twice (from 1 to 1.5 to nearly 2 hours for a 2 item order), then arrived cold in a wet bag of spilled vinegar, with over half our items missing and by then no time to reorder. Not worth the risk.
Go to place everytime we crave for pad thai.
The lady who runs this restaurant is always so nice to us. Good food good price. Spicey level 2 chicken pad thai is awesome
Their Pad Thai is the best. Hands down
Always fresh, never disappointed.
Probably the best Thai food in Southern Indiana, the flavors are amazing. Each dish is better than the last. I love the tom yum soup that they make. The husband and wife team that make up the entire staff really work hard to give you great food and amazing customer service. The only complaint that I have is, for the price the dish size is small. I think they need to give you a little more bang for your buck. I feel like pre covid you got a lot more food. Now it seems the Togo orders are smaller in size. I may be wrong but I don't think I am. But it is understandable during these times. And definitely worth the price. I just wish when I spen 60 bucks on food I have enough to fill me up. Other than that I love the place. And can't wait to go back.
HIGHLY recommend TanThai to everyone I meet! This is the only place in New Albany to get truly authentic Thai food. It is delicious and provides such a cool variation to your normal dinner date. Been coming to this place for years, and I will continue to come. Love supporting local businesses, and the chef and his wife, Emily, are such friendly people. I used to love eating the chicken soup when I was not feeling well, but since I've become more of a plant-based eater, I eat the veggie pad thai. It is unlike other pad thai that I have had, but I love the flavor, texture, and the amount of vegetables. My 2 year old daughter loves sharing it with me. I don't get any spice though...I think it overwhelms the flavor of the dish. The chicken and broccoli child dish is really good too...for the kiddos! One thing I don't like is the amount of oil used...as I start to eat healthier, I am trying to stay away from too much oil.
Best Thai food in the area. Spring rolls are out of this world. Owner is super friendly. I love coming here.
Wanted to share an honest review after seeing a southern indiana food Facebook post where my negative comment was deleted. I have tried 3 different dishes here and didn’t like any of them. Food was watery and bland. There are better Thai restaurants to buy from.
I feel I have been spoiled by other Thai restaurants in the Louisville/Southern Indiana area. I have tried several of Tanthai's offerings, but none are great in my opinion :( They get some stars due to cleanliness and friendly staff.
I got a delicious togo order of level1 meatless yum, it’s was the exact herby and noodle-y taste I was looking for. This is my newest favorite Thai restaurant :)
The service is 5 stars and the atmosphere is lovely even (if I was only in there for to go dinner).
Craving Thai for such a long time, the Phad Thai was super mushy and overcooked. Such a disappointment.
I’m going to start with the positives and say the staff is very friendly and the woman at the counter is so sweet. Unfortunately the food is dreadful. I give a place a try three times before I give a negative review and unfortunately all three times the food was disappointing. I love that they carry beer which is a big plus too but just can’t ignore how bad the food is. We will not be back but wish all the best and success to them especially during this troublesome time.
I had been really craving Phad Thai for months and was looking for somewhere near where I live. I Google this place and super happy I did. My mouth is on fire at the moment from a perfect level of spice and very pleased with my shrimp dish. I will most definitely be back.
Literally the worst Padd Thai I've ever put in my body. It was flavorless and the peanut sauce was as viscous as water.
Small portions, minimal chicken pieces, and the chicken satay was too tough to eat. Won’t return!
Loved this place in high school and I make a point to visit everytime I'm in town. It's still just as delicious as it was over a decade ago!
The larb gai and summer rolls are delicious. Love the fresh herbs!
Just enjoyed Chicken Pad Thai and it was most excellent! The staff was very friendly and warned me against going level 4 on my heat level since it was my first time there. I'm glad they did, but I think I'm ready for #4 next time! It's nice to have a great Thai Restaurant in Southern Indiana.
I have been going to Tan Thai for years. They don't have a huge menu, but their food is excellent. Right now, August 2020, they are only doing carryout.
My fiancee got the Pahd Thai and I got the curry (red paste). His was unedible and had to throw out. Boiled, bland chicken, no flavor and mushy, overcooked noodles. He's still hungry and we've wasted some money. My curry was very watery, not enough rice to absorb anything. Basically was similar to soup. Instead of potatoes it was squash? Wasn't bad but was a small portion of food.
The only upside was the that the summer rolls were amazing! Absolutely love the basil/mint in them and the sauce. Will not return however. Much better Thai food on the Louisville side.
I love this restaurant! If you've never been the lady makes a great suggestion. Idk what its called but it's got. Med fried egg on top and that stuff is where it's at
Tanthai is a fantastic hidden gem in Southern Indiana. The spring rolls and chicken masaman are my favorites!
I wanted to like this place but my noodles were so over cooked they wouldn't pick up with a spoon or fork. I mentioned that to the lady. Kinda like they were reheated. I got the pad keep maw. I've had better and a much larger serving in other cities. Lady at register was very nice. Prices are too high for the size of food you get in my opinion.
I love this place. Delicious. Options cater to the meat lover, vegetarian, and vegan lifestyle. Great prices.
Absolutely amazing food and staff! We eat here at least twice a week. Authentic Thai food.
Tanthai has friendly staff, excellent food, and quick service. They have our carryout ready very quickly. My husband and I go there all the time and we love it! The green chicken curry and Pad Thai is especially good. Please go and support this small business!
*Edit* 2/15/2020-This place is still amazing.
We love this place. It's a very small operation so the wait can be lengthy, but it's worth it. The owner is SUPER sweet and won't hesitate to let you know why their food is the best. She is very proud of her food and the results show.
Awesome low carb heart healthy choices! Great service and extremely friendly staff! Many more lunches to be had at Tanthai of New Albany!!!
Excellent food and staff
I LOVE Tanthai! The food is ALWAYS fresh and delicious. The lady who works out front is one of the sweetest people ever. One of my very favorite places to eat.
Historical and interesting
Delicious and wonderful service!! Pad Thai is amazing!
We always have a wonderful experience and great food at Tanthai. Owners are very friendly and give great service!
Wonderful service, and the food is the bomb! The only change I would make would be slightly larger portions. That being said, you will not experience these flavors anywhere nearby ! Get the tom yum soup with level 3 spices 😜
TanThai is my favorite restaurant. Everything is made fresh, no MSG, no cross contamination of food. The service is great and I love the atmosphere.
Absolutely love the thai tea! One of my favorite drinks if all time!
i literally would die for this place
I the love the the food my son the their chicken wigs!
This place is an absolute treasure. I highly recommend the Tom Yum soup, the curries, the summer rolls and the Pahd See Ew. You won’t find a cleaner place maybe anywhere. So so delicious. I’m so grateful for Tan Thai!!
No msg. Food was very fresh and delicious. The server was very nice and even made jokes! Definitely going back again!
Very nice place . Food was excellent . Our waitress was helpful in helping us pick meals we would enjoy . I've never had Ti food before I definitely will go back .
Friendly service, great food!
Man I hate giving 2 stars but that pad Thai was awful. Just noodles and peanut flavor and oil. No green onion, no cilantro, no peanuts and very little chicken.
This is the only poor review we have ever given on a public forum, as my husband and I love supporting local businesses, but this is the WORST Thai food we have ever had!!! Not fresh, horrible taste, meat was not cooked and it smelled bad!
We threw out all of our food....what a waste! Sorry, but we will only visit Jeffersonville and Louisville for stellar Thai cuisine now!
I've been eating here religiously for the last 4 years. I love this place!! Best thai food I've had, and really great prices! The owner is sweet and helpful, and the food is just amazing!
Food was fantastic and at an affordable price! Plus the inside was fairly fancy which makes it great for a date.
The only reason why im giving this 1 star is so that i can say this: the is terrible fowl disgusting. Im srill throwing it up. Thats not thai. I lived in NYC amd probably ate rat thai that was better. Dont do it, dave ypur coins!
LOVED it
Love this place ❤️
Excellent food and service!
I got the Tom Yum medium spice. It was perfect!! Spicy but flavorful. I moved from California & have been looking for more authentic Asian food. It felt like home here. The service was great!
Updated 08FEB19 -- if readers want a quick tip on how to judge the worthiness of reviewers, I'll give you a quick hint: Anyone who says TanThai is the best Thai food they've ever had or that it's authentic Thai doesn't know what Thai food is, and are beyond clueless. This is NOT Thai cuisine, does not have Thai seasonings and isn't even served with suitable types of rice.
I visited TanThai on 25NOV17. I was NOT pleased with the experience.
I ordered spring rolls, Gang Keaw Warn and Ginger Chicken and Green Beans. I asked for the Gang Kaew Warn to be green curry and extra spicy.
Portions on all three items were ridiculously small, especially given the price point.
The three spring rolls were tiny, roughly 3 inches long by 3/4 inch diameter and fried so crispy they were on the edge of being burnt. The Ginger Chicken and Green Beans would have been bland if not for the excessive saltiness. The Gang Kaew Warn was definitely bland with very little spice to it.
The two entrees were accompanied by small servings of white rice. The menu stated jasmine rice. Whatever we were served was not any jasmine rice I have ever tasted. There was almost no flavor and it was overcooked.
While paying, I was asked if I enjoyed my meal. I mentioned the lack of heat for my dish and was told that they had decided to give me heat level 3 of 5. Now, when I had placed my order, I had informed the lady that my mother is Thai and that I grew up eating Thai and Vietnamese food. At this point, I politely asked why I was given a 3 when I asked for more heat and was told that since I had never been there before, I would not have liked their next level of heat because it would be "too spicy."
I would normally give a restaurant a second chance, sometimes a third. However, based upon price vs portion, other reviews and the attitude I encountered, I won't return to this establishment. I will instead continue to eat at Mai's Thai in Jeffersonville if I want Thai dishes.
Very Rude Service! Just Ordered Food And Paid.. Was Then Told We Was Not Allowed To Use There Restroom..Which Was The Most Ridiculous Thing I've Ever Heard. After Spending $30 On Food, And Was Refused To Use There Restroom.. That's Not How To Treat Any Customer If You Expect Them To Come Back.
I just can't say enough about Tan Thai! The best savory flavor thai, allergen friendly, fast service, quality healthy meal, they make everything fresh to order.
Some of the best Thai Food around. Great Service.
Good service, enjoyed my dish
Excellent food
Food was poorly made. Potatoes were under cooked and small proportion
Tom yum was pretty good and service was excellent. Server was very nice and prompt. My friend's pad thai was a little bland. Chicken satay appetizer was overcooked, dry, and very small for the price. However, my main concern is that after only eating tanthai Friday, I've developed some symptoms of foodborne illness, which have persisted for two days. Nothing on my plate smelled outwardly spoiled, but tanthai is the only thing I ate that day and symptoms started immediately the next morning.
Always amazing food with fast friendly service.
Nice little place. Good food. The dishes are a bit fancier looking than I'm used to, which was a nice change. If you ask for it to be spicy, they bring enough heat to keep you happy, unless you're a fire-eater. I tried one down from their spiciest, and my lips were burning pretty well.
Can't remember
Excellent Thai food. They make all of their food from scratch. Great flavor. Be careful what hotness level you order though, anything more than a two is really hot.
Good food and good service. Their spicy food is HOT!
Really good food. Believe them when they tell you 5 is hot.
Very good and very nice staff!
Awful I will not recommend tanthai to anyone. Mediocre at best. The food is nothing like Thai food. Thai food should have the following ingredients: pad Thai should have peanuts, pad Thai sauces from curry, onions, garlic, and basil; curry food should have curry, coconut milk, and Thai ingredients. Most of Tanthai are Americanized. Fresh ingredients is a must.
That food was just amazing absolutely wonderful service was very awesome amazing I would go there all the time it's just really good
Very good food and friendly staff. Plan on going again soon.
Very good authentic Thai food
I'm personally not a big fan but they have good food.
Dank, cheap food
Very tasty food. Nit your regular thai place. My drunken noodles didn't look anything like I get other places. Be careful of spicy level. I eat hot spicy food but their 4 was enough for me. They grow their own peppers. Will visit again.
Probably the single best plate of food in southern Indiana or Louisville. I cannot say enough how good the food is here.
All the entries were very sparse portions, all three dishes would be about the size of one dish anywhere else. I ordered Phad Thai and asked for extra peanuts and a side of peanut sauce to which her reply was our Phad Yhai doesn’t need peanuts and all the foreign exchange students from Thailand like it plain so I could not have any.. The waitress tried to tell my wife my daughter and myself why we could not have the food the way we wanted it. My daughter asked for soy sauce for her rice and the lady told her to use the drippings from the tiny entre. My wife asked for garlic oil for her beef dish and was flatly told that garlic would ruin the dish, I asked her to please just bring the soy sauce and refrain from trying to “educate” my family on Thai cuisine. She brought out about a teaspoon of soy sauce in a tiny dish and was upset my daughter wanted any at all. She was very rude and went way past the line of common decency. I for one will never return to yjis restaurant and will suggest you save your money and go anywhere else the food is ok but seemed to all be what would be ordered for a toddler.
Good foods excellent cook.
Delicious
Wonderful fresh food!
Best Thai restaurant around, by far!
Best thai food around.
Meh.
The food is consistently good. Fresh authentic Thai food. Service is usually pretty slow.
Great service and great food. Very friendly. Food is great quality without msg and preservatives. Everyone should try it's great
Good, but a little pricey
Food was awful and expensive. Will never go back.
I love love love this restaurant!!! Their food is amazing, the atmosphere is quaint and calming, and the staff are so sweet and personable! 😀
Service is very friendly and prompt. Setting is low key, casual - nothing fancy but I can certainly appreciate friendliness & the flavorful cuisine over decor. The food has always been stellar with only 1 dish I’ve tried I didn’t care for (Larb), and probably only because I was unfamiliar with it in the first place and it’s just not my preference. My husband and I love this little spot conveniently located by movie theater & coffee shop.
So very good!
Good food and prices. Staff is always friendly.
Excellent food and service!!
Delicious authentic cuisine! It’s a LOT different than any other Thai restaurant because the food is closer to the true Thailand tradition—so don’t expect “Americanized”, “over-sugared,” cuisine—it’s not like any other Thai place so don’t look for that here! Spicing levels are true so caution being over-zealous with heat levels! Quite a drive for us to go here, but we DO because it is soooo unique and worth the drive! Once you try it, you’ll get hooked. Especially love the coconut curries! The owners are very nice and full of information about the food.
Good authentic food. Good fast service.
Beyond awesomely good food!! Best in all the land!!!
Literally the best Resturant around. The Pad Thai spicy lever 2 is my favorite dish, I could eat it everyday. The spring rolls are also a must, so good. If you haven’t tried this place you are missing out, we need more restaurants this quality around Southern Indiana.
We are going to Thailand in a couple months and wanted to try Thai food. I got the grah pow gai and my husband got the pad Thai. Both were great! We liked the grah pow gai slightly better. We asked for “medium” spice. That was just right for us, and the server warned us not to ask for medium spice on our trip because it is on another level in Thailand. She gave us other tips too and was very helpful! Food was great and quick!
Great food and service
Compared to many wonderful thai restaurants in Indiana, this one is seriously lacking in variety, flavor, and service. Don't waste your time here.
The thai tea was lacking the usual yummy flavor I love in thai tea. My dish had a rancid odor, like the meat was almost going bad. My husbands pad thai was just noodles and bean sprouts with two tiny pieces of pork. The waitress was rather rude and condescending as well.
The eggrolls and rice were the only good things from our experience here.
If you want to try Thai food try somewhere else first
I've been to over 2,000 Thai restaurants across the country I highly recommend this one. I had the tom kha gai the chicken larb salad and kra prow.emily is very helpful I would have given it 5 stars but the furniture is not Five Star Furniture but the food is
Great service. There's only one server and she literally runs. Very good Thai food.
This place is ahhmazing! We come here all the time (at least twice a month) and have never had a bad experience, or dish! Definitely recommend!!!
Pleasant place, good food. Nice and quiet.
Nice venue. Good food. Quiet.
Authentic thai dishes and the thai tea is amazing.
Terrible food and experience. My wife and I ordered the spring rolls and the black pepper beef, it was absolutely awful. It tasted the way dog food smells. The beef was not seasoned and the food tasted inedible. We ate one of the sautéed onions, a piece of the beef, and that was all we could stand to eat of it. When we explained our disappointment to the server and manager, and said we didn't want to pay for the entrees because we couldn't even eat them, rather than being understanding they threatened to call the cops on us. We will NEVER be back to this restaurant. Both being servers at a well known resturant we know the customer is always supposed to be right. That is not the case here at all.
We were willing to pay for what we ate but felt it unfair to make us pay for what we could not eat. We do not and will never recommend this establishment to anyone!
I've had everything on the menu multiple times and still haven't found something I don't like
Awesome. I visit this restaurant as much as I can. Very good.
Classic family run Thai place in strip mall. Food was freshly prepared. Friendly.
Great owners and delicious food!!!
Good service and the food was better than I expected.
What I love about this restaurant is that you get a really invigorated, impactful flavor experience, but it doesn't leave you with taste-burn like cheap Asian-ish food does. The owner tells me they only use clean, additive free, high quality ingredients and I believe it. Yet it is quite affordable. When someone in the family is recovering from illness and has low appetite, we take out Thom-Yum. The owner is also lovely and friendly.
Decent atomsphere
I am from chicago and we have huge Thai community and restaurant here. I have been lived in Thailand for more than 3 years. I went down here for visiting relatives. And stopped by Tanthai. I had shrimp pad Thai and Tom yum to go. Pad Thai is very decent here. Can't compared with Pad thai in Thailand. But it tasted good. A little too much sauce tho. But I am happy with it. Tom yum is good too. I like it. Good cozy place to stop by. Server is very nice and soft voice. I read some rude comments here. I guess some people "think" they know better abt Thai foods than anyone in the world.
Service was cherry and helpful, she needed help though. Great food
All meals under 400 calories.
We come here once a month. We love the food and waitress.
Excellent Thai food.
Amazing food and great staff.
A lot of the food tasted the same. We had a pretty big take out order and we all shared dishes. Not a lot of variations between them.
Nice atmosphere, good authentic Thai food. I will be back!
Lady is very nice and the food is delicious
Not true Thai.
Not even lime with important food that requires it or herbs.
Maybe to people that don't know better they "like this place".... but if you are will travel you will know this is not authanetic nor is it any good.
They give you very little food for the price, The same person to take shorter brings you food out and the same person you pay.
One cook.
Two employees in the whole place!
Instead of being so cheap they need employees, you have people waiting far too long for such a little on her plate and such blan tasting food.
Disgusting! I won't be back!
Great food. Sometimes more spicy than I want.
Friendly service, great food and affordable pricing. If you enjoy authentic Thai food then you have come to the right place.
Really friendly and helpful staff, super yummy food and not super expensive! So happy to have found a good Thai place close to home!!!
Incredible amounts of food, with a true spice scale from 1 to 5. Best curry in the area.
Their food is amazing, and the staff is extremely friendly.
Selection is rather small and service was slow (one server for the whole place as far as we could tell) but we enjoyed the meal.
This has fast become one of our favorite places to eat. My wife and I have started comming here every Thursday and we tend to see the same folks over and over. Awesome food, good people. We will definitely keep coming.
I would eat here every day if I could. This guy who said "Not real thai food" has got to be confused. Maybe he pulled up the wrong restaurant? Not a Thai person on the premise? Really? There's like only two people that are working there when I go and they are both thai! Rude staff? You mean the only waitress that works there who is extremely soft spoken? I have never had a bad experience and I have been there 30 times. If this guy got level three or above spice on his food and he wasn't downing water like crazy then his taste buds are probably gone any way. As far as I'm concerned this is the best Thai restaurant in Kentuckiana. I've been to all the Thai restaurants in Louisville and they do not hold a candle to this restaurant's food. I have had all the dishes but may favorites are Chicken Pahd Thai, Tohm Khar Gai (with red curry), and Beef Satay.
I have been a loyal customer for years...The staff is polite and attentive. The business itself is very clean and the food is so delicious. I highly recommend the Ginger Chicken with Green Beans. YUM!! Also add a couple of orders of the Spring Rolls. :) I'm telling you....you won't regret it.
