I came to this establishment just for a quick lunch (when that sushi craving hits, it hits) and boy was I surprised. For such a small restaraunt, this spot is missing nothing in elegance.
The music is gentle and at a reasonable volume, the decor is gorgeous and moody, and the natural lighting from the large windows is very pleasant.
For a quiet Friday afternoon, my server (Gigi, I think) was attentive but not overbearing. In fact, she was very sweet.
The food was all amazing. Everything was very reasonably priced for the quality and the presentation was very cute and instagram-able. I was worried about ordering the lychee on ice for my dessert as lychee can be a bit hit or miss but this one was a hit! It was fresh and sweet.
On top of all of this, I spent maybe 30-40 minutes here and only because I was relaxing a bit after eating. Service was extremely quick.
I will definitely be spending a lot of time here on my Friday lunch breaks!
Tl;dr: food is above average and comes out fast, the service is quick! Depending on the time, parking can be challenging.
You’re quickly greeted and sit down shortly after. The staff is quick and attentive which makes for excellent service! The food is above average but not the best sushi (not even in Chicago). The restaurant decor and feel is also above average but there are nicer places for this price. Over all, there are other sushi restaurants that would be first choice contenders and recommend this only to try after those have been exhausted.
This place was a pleasant surprise actually! First of all we didn’t expect it to be this crowded (granted it was a Friday night) given their location. But we reserved by calling and managed to get a table pretty quickly. We ordered the spicy shrimp roll, spider roll, fire dragon maki, samurai, the rock and a couple of others which I don’t remember. They were pretty good overall, the spicy shrimp and spider were really good! Although we did not like the fact that they took an hour to bring out our first order.. And the other rolls were alright, but maybe things taste better when you’re super hungry? Either way, it was good and satisfied our sushi cravings.
My experience at Butterfly was fantastic! Everything we ordered was vegetarian, and it was all incredibly flavorful. The service was phenomenal, and I highly recommend making a reservation, as it can get very busy on weekdays and weekends. We tried the Drunken Noodles, Penang Curry, Fire Dragon Roll Sushi, and Edamame, and everything was delicious with no complaints. It was my first time trying Thai food, and both the Drunken Noodles and the Penang Curry were phenomenal—I would definitely go back for them.
Shusi was really nice along with noodles and curry.
Probably my favorite sushi restaurant. Been coming here for years. Always quality food and service
Always his the spot.

Respectfully.. I do not recommend this place. It is overpriced as well. I ordered 5 items and somehow they all were bland or had no taste whatsoever.
First, the pad Thai.. where is the sauce? It was just dry. That’s all I can say to it. One bite was all it took for me to throw it in the trash.
Speaking of dry, I also ordered California sushi with it. The ginger they gave? Dry.. let’s say you just wanted to eat the sushi. I pick up the sushi and it broke apart in my hand, but you can’t always mess up sushi right? Wrong. The rice in the sushi was really mushy and there was no flavor to it besides mush..
You know what else had no flavor? The miso soup.. usually miso soup is clear.. not the one I received.. it was a chalky white color. I gave it a chance to try, I mean 2/5 of my order was bad.. this one couldn’t be.. guess what.. it was bad.. shocker! The miso soup came paired with my chicken katsu. I never had such a bland, flavorless and soft chicken katsu in my life.. you guys know chicken katsu isn’t supposed to be soft but crispy right?
So far, 3/5 items were bad.. but wait! There’s more! The seaweed salad tasted really old. Last but not least.. the eggroll which I actually finished instead of throwing it out like I did with the others. The only reason I finished the eggroll is because I love duck sauce and that’s what gave the eggroll some flavor. The eggroll it self.. it’s tiny yet thick with no flavor. If you were to eat it by yourself, you would probably need to wash it down with a drink to get it to your stomach.
Overall? 0/5 would NOT recommend.
Ordered Salmon w Teriyaki and baby eggrolls. Salmon was burnt to hell leaving a horrible taste. Beyond the charred flavor, there was nothing. No seasoning or salt period. I guess the TINY containers of sauce was supposed to make up for that fact.
Egg rolls were standard but also quite flavorless.
Overall, I’d avoid but if you’re looking for a mediocre eating experience then this is the place. The restaurant itself has a slightly unclean vibe as well. Be sure not to look too closely at the corners and floor. Nice wait staff though.
Excellent sushi. Samurai roll is really unique and nothing similar is available outside of Butterfly Sushi or Sumu Ramen.
Decent spot with decent vegetarian options
Great food and great customer service!!! Definitely recommend
So, I just found out about this place...and I absolutely loved it! Nice ambiance, great staff as well. I tried a green salad, chicken satay, fried spicy tuna, and cashew chicken! All of these items were quite flavorful. I would definitely go back. I thought the pricing was pretty reasonable too.
Clean and nice!
A little less serving size for me.
Always have delicious food and wonderful service.
When we got in the restaurant they were already glancing literally every time I looked up.After we paid and were walking out the worker said “I hope you support us next time” as if we didn’t just spend 40 dollars.
The sushi rolls are always good quality. Although they removed smoked salmon from their Philly roll - it was good but I miss the smoked salmon for sure.
Sushi (911 Maki and Dragon Roll; 4/5 stars): Both pretty decently tasty and wholesome, some pieces cut unevenly. Really pretty presentation!
Pad See Ew (1/5 stars): Probably the least flavored pad see ew I’ve ever had. Simply lacked traditional Thai flavor. Ordered as “Thai spicy” and it wasn’t spicy at all, we were given chili sauce on the side. Chicken also flavorless though this is often the case with pad see ew.
Basil Fried Rice (2/5 stars): Slightly more flavor than the pad see ew, but still quite light on basil flavor. Meat was unspectacular. Portion was plentiful.
Price was okay; value was poor given the quality of the Thai dishes we got. Hopefully some of their other menu items do shine.
Food it's amazing 👏!!!!!! Very poor service!!!!
Outstanding!
The sushi is delicious and the dishes are beautifully decorated. The staff is friendly. The Thai food is excellent too. The chicken teriyaki is generous in portions and great value. The staff always thank you when we go out. It was a great experience.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I went here for the first time today. The employees are very attentive to management. Smile and talk in a friendly manner. Came in to say hello and invited to sit at the table. Food served at speed It has beautiful decorations. The restaurant‘s best-selling sushi was introduced. I had 911 and it was amazing. And it was the first time I tried spicy crazy noodle. Adding a little spiciness, it was great.
Do not go! Oh dear Butterfly, we are in the neighborhood and had warm sushi when you first opened long ago. We never returned, until our favorite neighborhood sushi restaurant closed and our neighbor said she goes there.
Against our good judgement, we went this evening. The restaurant is fully set up as a to go delivery business with every inch of what should be a showy sushi bar to a fast food establishment, complete with dirty towels, open bags of chips, half eaten meals, drinks , dirty fake flowers and old Christmas decorations.
The sashimi was at least cold and even tasting. Then we tried one of their Thai dishes. It was inedible, full of soy and sugar.
The bathroom was a slum, dirty with no soap, and urine on the floors topped off with graffiti covered doors.
To the owner: This is an easy fix! Just do it!

Best
I don’t ever leave reviews but this place was fantastic. There was no wait but service did take a little while but it was absolutely worth the wait. The panang with tofu was delicious, the crab rangoons were some of the best i’ve ever had (and i’ve had my fair share) and the sushi was melt in your mouth heaven. The drinks were also amazing! The mango and lime soda was refreshing and the thai iced coffee was smooth and sweet. The outside is misleading but the interior design was gorgeous and the plates and cups were all very unique (plus paper straws). Me and my friend both agreed that the number one word to describe this place would be “creamy”. The color schemes and decor, the delicious food, the beautiful drinks. We also both agreed that it would make an amazing first date spot. 100% would recommend!! A little expensive but absolutely worth the money.
Items ordered x/5
Thai Iced Cofee 4.5/5
Mango and Lime soda 4.5/5
Crab rangoons 4.6/5
nigiri 4.7/5
Tofu Panang 4.0/5
Beef Pad Tai 4.1/5
Favorite spot for sushi! Delicious, fresh, every time we go we try something different along with our regular sushi favorites and has not disappointed.
Best sushi and Tom Kar soup. My 6 year old also loves eating here. Food, service, and atmosphere is always wonderful.
If you like sushi, that's the place!

Amazing Food and Amazing prices.
Hospitality would be their weakest link. I asked for a recommendation for a vodka drink and was told that they do not sell vodka but have mixed drinks that have vodka in them. The food is served in a timely manner and I love the intimate ambiance and cozy couches.
Parking is usually accessible on the main street aswell.
Exelente lugar y muy Rico todoooo
Very nice and clean restaurant. Amazing drinks and sushi. Highly recommend
Lots of gluten free options, a wide variety of food (from sushi, to Thai curry, to noodle dishes, and more).
Food is good and priced well.
I thought the presentation on some of the food was a little cheesy and it’s not very cohesive, but I think that is part of the charm of this place. Everything that comes out is like it’s own little art piece. We walked by another table on our way out that had a very detailed and artistic dragon made out of colorful mayo (I think?) so fun and creative.
A place to go for some good sushi!
The food was good but didn’t expect the wait time for an order whilst the restaurant was empty to be 40+ min but over all is good
The service was very friendly, there was one dish that took a while to arrive, which wasn't on the wait staff but the chef.
While the staff is Warm and welcoming, the food comes out quick . They have plenty of vegetarian options. Their sushi options were fresh and awesome. Thai food was delicious, we had their egg rolls, drunken noodles and panang curry.
4 star for the dirty bathrooms. Besides that pertaining to just the overall taste , pretty good option for a casual week night meal!
Photo- samurai roll
Too much mayo on everything
The sushi is very mushy, would not recommend
My order hadn’t been started when I arrived despite being told it was ready 10 minutes prior. The staff was indifferent and gave me attitude about having to wait. They certainly didn’t care about offering any compensation. Sushi is fine.
We stopped here for a quick dinner with a friend and we loved everything about this place. The food was delicious and the waitress was very nice.
We got a variety of plates; sushi, ramen, salad, and soup and they were all just fantastic. And then we got dessert and man, that was the one dish we had to take a picture for - it was huge (we were really glad we only got 1 dessert) and it was DELICIOUS!
We definitely be back here!
Service was fine and atmosphere was great - unfortunately the sushi was pretty mediocre. Was mushier than it should have been and kind of bland. Likely not returning.
Sushi was mediocre.
akeout review:
Food was prepared in a very timely manner. It was fresh.
Crunchy shrimp roll was maybe the best mako roll I’ve ever had
Crab Rangoons were crispy and delicious
Curry fried rice is good, but it’s AMAZING when you add some spice to it. Butterfly gave us a small container of red spicy sauce and it was a perfect addition to the rice.
Looking forward to dining in for our next experience

Очень вкусно. Атмосферно. Правда, помещение и особенно туалеты уже просят ремонта.
Some amazing vegetarian options are available- loved their sweet potato shushi !
Went for a late dinner and it was not that impressive. I had the pad thai and it wasn't that great.
The location is good and I liked their decorating but the food wasn't that great. I would not go back.
Excellent Smoked Fish!
I love the food here. It is fresh and tasty, and there are very creative drinks.
The sushi was cold, clean & as sweet as if it the fish was just caught. I had the ama ebi & fresh salmon sushi with seaweed salad. Seaweed salad was nice and crunchy. Best sushi restaurant experience I had in a long time.
The kitchen was closing when we got there but they didn’t make us feel like they were rushing us.
Food was prepped super quick and the staff was super friendly.
The plates we’re dirty, i have no idea why the sushi had little bones inside , it was my friend’s birthday and they didn’t even say “happy birthday”…poor service 🥲
Usually love dining at this location and we usually dine in on Thursday’s which is usually empty. They close at 10PM and we usually arrive at 9:15 and have our full order in the kitchen by 9:30, out before close.
Came in at our usual 9:15 today (Thursday), was busier than usual but not overflowing. As we asked for a table of 4, our hostess told us to give her a minute and started looking for an open table. As a waitress came out of the kitchen and told her not to sit us, she then came to us and said she couldn’t sit us because they were too busy.
Once I asked why she couldn’t she said they were too full..pretty annoying and deciding not to seat someone 40 minutes before close when there was tables available because someone told her not to seat us. Not the best experience.
This place has changed and not in a good way, it is not what it use to be.
Clean & friendly staff. Fast service and delicious food!
Favorite sushi delivery in Chicago!
Really good place for food. Love the sushi and Basil Fried Rice.
Placed delivery order and when I called to report a problem with my order, the manager was unprofessional and became rude talking over me and accusing me of not knowing what I ordered. She then hung up on me. As a long time customer, this is intolerable. All my future business goes to Yuzu.
I had the Godzilla roll and it was amazing!
We were here with some friends Monday night.
The waitress had a real attitude problem and seemed very annoyed.
Only took her 20 / 25 minutes to get our drinks ☹️.
This has been our favorite restaurant for about 15 years and if you can't greet customers with a smile you shouldn't be working here.
She was the worst server I've ever had at any restaurant.
Wish I could give her a -5.
And PLEASE...
Stop putting food coloring in the mayonnaise.
I don't want bright pink or blue mayonnaise.
Really fast service and I had my order ready in about 15 minutes. Sushi looked and tastes amazing.
Why are the reviews so good here? We ordered two sushi rolls and two Thai bowls - nothing was over a 2 star rating, at least not for Chicago standards.
First time experience and it was some good stuff!
Worst service! We attempted to dine in with our son today, we left and asked for our food to be made to go because our son was not sitting well and we didn’t want to disturb the other guests eating the first problem is they forgot part of our order and by the time we got home we called to get the rest of it delivered we even added more to the order and our food never got delivered untill hour and a half later, The worst part is the restaurant was not even busy and they had five chefs!
Love butterfly & always bring friends that are visiting here! Great quality, wonderful ambiance & byob.
Food was very good and once the Sushi plates came out, the Food Presentions was probably one of the best I've seen.
Creative and beautifully presented sushi rolls with a variety of sauces as accompaniments. Often I feel all sushi tastes like the soy sauce but everything was strikingly different. The gyoza was great and there was actually crab in thw rangoons! I was hoping to try another inventive cocktail but was never asked. Otherwise fantastic.
Favorite place for sushi!
So the customer service was horrible. I went on a first date with a young lady and the experience at the restaurant was awful. The food was good, and everything was going good until, they tried to box our food up and rush us to leave with food still on our plates! It seemed really racist to be honest
This was my local Thai and Sushi restaurant when I lived on HubbardSt. When I’m back in Chicago craving Thai, I stop by. From the soup to drunken noodles to the sushi. I miss this place so much!
This is definitely one of our favorite restaurants in the city. 80% of time. We order out and the food is just as good as when we eat in. Service is always quick and efficient. We've never had a bad meal here
Great food. Ambience and fabulous service.
Everything was great. Pad Thai, fried rice, all the rolls, definitely give it a try.
If you want to experience disappointment dinning here you’ll get it .. I heard about the restaurant on social media. I was every excited to attend. When I arrived I waited 5-7 minutes just for someone to notice/speak to me. Then the “host” pointed where I should sit she did not escort me to my seat. After awkwardly finding my way around the seating I than sat 25 minutes without anyone asking me if I needed anything (not even a drink). Meanwhile both tables next to me got full service along with check ins. I felt every neglected so I had to speak up to get someones attention, I figured I better order a drink and a meal NOW who knows when I’ll get the chance to order my meal. My meal finally came 15-20 minutes later ( I tried to be understanding maybe the kitchen was backed up) but on the other hand I ordered a volcano shrimp maki which is ONLY 5 ROLLS UNACCEPTABLE! She delivered my food I made sure to ask for eel sauce while she was present yet that still did not bypass me waiting even longer. I watch her laugh and talk with her colleagues while my food is getting cold to the point where it isn’t enjoyable anymore.. I quickly realized I was disheartened with the service , money, and time I wasted while at this restaurant. If you don’t want the same experience go to tanuki sushi on Sheffield Ave !!
The restaurant is very unorganized. They definitely need a hostess, phone person, and busser. The food was a 7.5/10.
Great value and tasty dishes
I've consistently had good meals here. In my opinion, they have the best fried rice in town! Always good vibes when dining in.
Sushi is always nice and fresh tasting. Love the Spicy Tuna Roll!
Was craving Thai food for quite sime time and Butterfly Sushi Bar did not disappoint. The Thai Iced Tea was creamy, thick and rich. I usually prefer it without any ice but they could not accomodate this request. Basil Fried Rice was flavorful as was Mix Veggie Entree. Will be returning to try their Chocolate Lava Cake next.
One of our favorites! Love Butterfly!
Great Thai and Sushi. This location seems to always be better than the others.
For that price range food is amazing, atmosphere is okay, good place to go eat and chat.
They also have Japanese and East Asian alcohol .
My daughter loves their Thai food. I decided to try Chinese garlic shrimp. Not good. Way overcooked. I'll try for Thai again and hopefully it will be better.
Great date spot for the atmosphere and service. The sushi is ok but the noodles dishes are actually the star of the show for me and my fam. Get the Thai iced tea!
We had to wait a little. Sushi roll was cold when it arrived. Apps were not bad. I’d say average food taste, better presentation, decent value with the BYOB option
The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The food was also delicious. My family and I were very satisfied and definitely recommend this place.
Tom yum soup was delicious. Had a tangy flavor to it with lot of veggies.
Good sushi. A lot of variety on the menu. Sake was not so great as recommended.
This is by far my go to sushi spot. They never fail me. Sushi is always fresh, tastes amazing. My mouth actually waters and a happy food dance occurs when I place my order. I usually order 'take out' from Butterfly. They pack it so well, it's necessary and appreciated. My faves are the cucumber salad, spicy tuna, summer, and well all of them. I've never had a roll I don't like from here.
Love the ambiance of this place, feels super upscale but the food is super affordable. Their menu is huge, and I love that they have pictures of everything so you know exactly what you’re ordering. Great service too :)
Good stuff
I used to go here frequently, but moved out of the neighborhood. Stopped by for lunch and was quickly reminded what a good job they do. I only get the maki rolls, but they were excellent.
This place was so good, definitely will be back. The staff was amazing and very attentive.
Great food but horrible service. We were a group of seven but asked our bills to be separated before we start ordering. Not only did it take them an hour to split our bill but they added a service charge of 20% to each bill. They never informed us of a service fee if it's more than 6 people. Please be aware and check your receipt.
Over priced for nothing.... Gorilla sushi is better. Save your money and time.
Wish sushi Burrito would return.
Excellent Food
Great Service
Been going there for 10 years and the consistency is always good !
Butterfly is my goto place for great sushi!
Great sushi! Friendly staff.
Nice place for a outing with friends. The seating area is small with very little privacy and can be noisy. Parking is a bit of a headache with street parking only. The waitress was friendly but very little follow up. The food came out quickly. The presentation was pretty and the food was good. I would only dining if you are feeling friendly and patience.
A welcoming family friendly or large group restaurant.. good service plenty of options on the menu.. A relaxed casual environment. Good street parking ..Just try it.. Date night, girls night.. a good all around choice.
The sashimi was only one kind of fish, no soy sauce and no wasabi. Dinning in is much better.
The food is tasty, reasonably priced, and presented well. The pictures don't do the presentation justice due to the low lighting, but the flower theme is lovely.
I only ordered small plates (no entrees), but the small plates filled me up. And the massive drink definitely did its job and I didn't need to order another.
For those who like a lot of spice with their suchi, the wasabi is very light, so you'll need to pile it on to get the kick you're looking for (ask for extra).
Service was phenomenal! Staff kept an eye out for water refills. They even boxes the leftovers for us, which is fantastic for a sushi bar!
Drinks 🧋
Thai Tea 10/10
Taro Bubble Tea 8/10
(The boba was too large for the straw 🥲)
Appetizers 🥟
Calamari 9/10
Fried Gyoza 6/10
Sushi 🍱
Philli Maki 8/10
Black Dragon 10/10
The Rock 5/10
911 8/10
Volcano Shrimp Maki 7/10
Samurai 1/10
Beaware: The spicy rolls aren’t spicy!
Only rolls we disliked were The Rock (too much tobikos) & The Samurai roll (too sweet, lingonberry sauce on top left it overtly sweet for a sushi roll, we thought the salmon would be more salty, for that sweet n’ salt).
My boyfriend & I ordered 3 rolls each. The presentation was great, but we felt it was bit extra or too much for a late lunch.
All & all we would return. Try coming at night when the vibe is better, not a good lunch spot. Butterfly Sushi Bar is reasonably price & offers great value on their sushi.
Incredible sushi rolls and fantastic appetizers and service.
