Hot Woks Cool Sushi is a pan-asian restaurant with locations downtown and several neighborhoods in the Chicago area. We specialize in Sushi and Stirfry dishes.
A Warm and Delicious Escape in the Heart of Chicago
This Chinese restaurant near Millennium Park is a true gem, especially on a chilly day. We stopped in to warm up and were blown away by the incredible flavors and comforting atmosphere.
The soup was an absolute highlight—rich, flavorful, and exactly what we needed to shake off the cold. Every spoonful felt like a warm hug on a winter day. The rolls were equally impressive—fresh, beautifully prepared, and bursting with flavor.
The location is perfect for a meal after exploring Millennium Park, and the service was quick and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable.
If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy delicious Chinese cuisine in downtown Chicago, this place is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!
I was after something a bit spicy, so thought we’d give Hot Woks Cool Sushi a try. Service was good and the atmosphere was fine. My wife had the Yakisoba with prawn and I ordered the Spicy Garlic Ramen. The Yakisoba was nice, but the ramen was lacking a bit in spice for my taste. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our meal and would visit again.
If you think this is a tourist trap, it's not! I've seen this place for MANY years, but never tried. The location of this place is right in front of the Millennium Park. We happened to be in the area and tried it. The food was nothing fantastic, but it was freshly made with fresh ingredients. We had a Spicy chicken ramen a silver sushi platter. The salmon avocado roll was really yummy and all the nigiri sushi was delicious. The ramen was good, but not awesome. Kara age was so blend. The dish was not hot (temperature) The price was very reasonable for being in the heart of downtown. I would definitely recommend it! Why not 5 stars? I only give 5 for truly exceptional case.
Great find a few blocks from our hotel and near Millennium Park. Very reasonable prices especially for downtown Chicago. Delicious food, friendly service. Nice atmosphere, though we did takeout. Photos of food taken in low lighting at a different location — food pics would be much better it taken at restaurant table included in pics. Highly recommend.
Shogun jumbo roll is a MUST. The black dragon roll is a work of art. Great place before the symphony or art museum. Screaming toddlers on my visit. Hope you don't experience the same.
Date night at this place is more lit than Nick Nolte's mugshot. Great service and great food. You can stuff your gut and not break your wallet.
I love doing pick ups here. The rolls are always fresh and tasty. And the price is very reasonable!
Great price!
I always get the vegetarian bento box. Good food, great prices for downtown. Love that it's right across from the art institute
Great vegetarian sushi, plus we had the panang with tofu (excellent) and pad Thai tofu (good). Surprised at the very high quality of the food! Location right near Art Institute.
Great sushi options. Clean spot.
Waiter ran to the door to give me my scarf I had forgotten 10/10 also really good food
Great vegetarian options, amazing and quick service, wonderful Christmas decorations.

Great sushi rolls and the staff was friendly when picking up my order. The two ladies giving out orders and seating people were welcoming, would definitely return!
They have an item on the menu with vegan in the title that is not vegan. Good food, not that expensive otherwise. Minus one star.
Incredible food and tea!
The worst experience
Loved the sushi, restaurant had great service!
Visiting from out of town, I stumbled across this gem while exploring the city. The food is AMAZING, service great, and location is perfect for enjoying takeout at one of the parks across the street.
This is my favorite place to eat when I'm in Chicago running a race
I was pleasantly surprised. I had the spicy garlic ramen. First rate. The service was very attentive. Portions were ample.
We couldn't able to eat here . As we enter the restaurant as we couldn't see anybody . The behavior of the person was rude. Rudly asked us what you want ? We asked that are you open to serve food. He rudely showed us door and shouted to wait outside so we left as we got embarrassed and humiliated. We were new we may not know the service they take place. Had a very bad experience
El ambiente es tranquilo, muy agradable para compartir. La comida es muy rica, la cantidad es abundante, la presentación es muy buena. Los empleados son amables, respetuosas.

Hot Woks Cool Sushi is the Michigan Ave spot! Great service and delicious food! You gotta ask for Patti, she’s so sweet and such a friendly person. Makes you feel like you’re a regular!
This place is great, authentic food. Low key vibes inside w a cozy feel. Great view of millenium park across the street. Ask for Patti, she is the best around. Hands down i come here because she works here and provides the best experience w the best suggestions and she cares for your visit and as a customer downtown that is RARE! Friendly staff and the crowd atmosphere is chill and friendly too. THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT
Delicious food in a comfortable and trendy atmosphere. I really enjoyed the frozen drinks that they offer and the sushi was delicious. That being said, the sushi pieces are very small. If you're really hungry, I recommend getting a hot dish, as the portions are larger. I will definitely come again to try other dishes!
Horrible service.
The food was decent. The staff however was inattentive. Saw many employees walking around but non came over when we called them over to make an addition to the order. We had to literally flag them down.
We ordered 2 bento boxes and 1 avocado sushi roll to take out. It was enough for 2 adults and 2 children. We really liked it, in particular the sushi roll.
If you like Asian, it's worth a trip. Good prices too
I enjoy everything I have tried. Very fresh. It is nice to have egg rolls that oil doesn't drip off and are made fresh not from a freezer. The staff are very sweet. Stop at least once when I visit
Do not get thai food here, taste is really bad. The originally spicy dishes are made very sweet even after making a request. The server who assisted us had a lot of attitude but the other staff were friendly.
Great poke bowls and sushi. probably some of the best in chicago
The service was rough, we had to flag somebody over to come help us every time. We just ordered two fresh rolls, And we were the only ones in the restaurant, but it still took over half an hour. The sushi was really really bad, and it wasn't the cleanest. See the attached photo, after seeing that we did not finish our food and we got up and left.
We live very close to this and the food is amazing and they also have very good drinks. So we go here a lot because it is just one of the best places nearby to us and it's on Michigan but it's not crazy overcrowded with tourists and one of the coolest things is that they have a lot of different Asian foods so you can go and get sushi but you can also get like Chinese food and fried rice and things like that. It's a really well maintained establishment and I hope that they are open for many years
I thought this was a tourist trap before I came but WOW the food is super good and the service is so nice and quick!! We love the Thai food and sushi and is honestly so amazing!!!
Clean place, prices are reasonable and tasty food! 3 years later I returned to Chicago and ended up with going to the same place to get some quick Asian food....it's located at crossing street from millennium park. I tried black rice in poke bowl first time and I thought it was pretty good. I couldn't tell who was our server because any server walked by would respond to us.
I was here 1 hr ago and ordered for take out and I told the person that taking my order that I’m allergic to anything related to eggs and not to put spicy mayo. I just opened my bag and see that there’s spicy mayo on my order and I’m very dissatisfied at this place. I spend about $50 just for it to be in the trash.
This place was okay, not the best sushi I have had nor the best service.
Service was bad food was ok though
Loved this place! Visiting Chicago for the first time it was a little overwhelming but this place had delicious sushi, a comfortable restaurant vibe, and pleasant service. The menu is also very extensive and the price is quite decent for the amount we got. Would definitely come again in the future!
Waited at least 30 minutes for food no one around us had food either do not know how they kept taking guests
Great food, reasonably priced, service wonderful
It was your average asian fusion restaurant. It was a reliably decent meal.
Great service! Very helpful
Had the bento box .. the quality was just not up to the mark. Very sweet teriyaki sauce and the broccoli , shrimp was cold and seemed to be fried in stale oil… quality has to be improved. We avoided the typical chain restaurants near by ..
Super tasty Sushis
Always reliably good food. Fast service. Friendly staff.
The food was good, but the service felt slow because the waiters seemed overwhelmed. They were polite, but it seemed like they could use more staff to manage everything smoothly.
Great food. The pad thai and green curry was flavour full and delicious...
The waiters are overworked and don't have time to attend to all needs
400$ painting front off Ford Focus. 2000$ painting 2 doors Mercedes. 650$ painting door for Ford Fusion.
Nice menu with all the Japanese and Chinese dishes you crave. Went there with a big party (two families with kids) and lots of special orders (vegan, gluten free, no cruciferous vegetables, no nuts, etc…) and every dish came as requested. Flavors were mostly good, a few staples (egg rolls. Fried rice) were a bit bland. But the sushi was all great and fresh! Particularly the vegan sushi rolls were all tasty and plentiful. A good place for a large and picky party!
Nice place to eat
The chicken coconut curry was delicious, and the dragon roll 😋 👌

Veggie stuff available
Stopped in here after seeing their diverse menu, which includes Chinese/Thai/Japanese items. I ordered a chicken pad thai, which was very good and flavorful! The sushi was fine; I enjoyed the Alaskan roll. I also ordered a house-made Yuzu soda, which was super tasty, 10/10. Service was good, inside atmosphere was pleasant (good lighting and you can actually see!). Definitely worth a stop if you’re interested in multiple cuisines.
Amazing food, great price, great location. The food was sooo good !!!
Recomendado
Great food , great place to eat! We went in family and we enjoyed it a lot!
I ate the ramen. It was good but not amazing... the people near me, they had sushi and it was really good...
I ate the ramen and 1 beer for 23 dollars...
I'm really disappointed because this used to be my go-to for sushi in the city. My friends and I went to this restaurant last week and while we were eating a child vomited in the back of the restaurant and down the hall to the bathrooms. We notified multiple staff members because it was next to our table and they did nothing for a long time. They "called the cleaners". During the time before the cleaning people came the staff was walking THROUGH, not even around the vomit, and tracking it all over, even into the kitchen. It was disgusting, especially for a restaurant. I don't even care how good the food is after that disgusting experience and I hope that next time there is an issue like that the staff cares more about cleanliness.
Lately the food they serve here, I can’t say for others looks and taste like leftovers scraps; especially with my To-go meals which I end up trashing.
Also they have a lady up front managing the restaurant for years and all I can say about her: she’s amazing and loves her job.
Please guys do better with the food so it don’t backfire at you guys should the health officials make a visit that’s if those ones even function in Chicago. Also one time I came in and they had a little fire incident in the back visible for all clients to see which was taken care of but the staffs had a terrible disposition especially the male server and one slim female server that just drops things on your table without curtsy. But I keep coming back because of that lady upfront and the convenience of location.
Great find a few blocks from our hotel and near Millennium Park. Very reasonable prices especially for downtown Chicago. Delicious food, friendly service. Nice atmosphere, though we did takeout. Menu varié serveuse sympathique. Petit pépin lors de la venue de nos plats et gestion particulière de la situation.
Amazing food!! So nice staff and cozy place. I deeply recommend
Literally the best food that I have ever eaten in my entire life!!! It was perfect in every way, and very affordable. I would definitely recommend trying this place out
It used to be good now it's just ok. Definitely overpriced.
food was good! Tom yum ramen was nice; not the best I've had, but definitely still good. Alaskan roll was also good: fish tastes fresh and the rice was well cooked, and the rice to filling ratio was good too. vibes are great; interior design is simple yet pleasant. there's even little games on the backside of the table mat, which was AWESOME.
Good food and bad service to the costumer
So I’ll start fast and simple. Sushi was great. Chicken soup tasted like tomato, lady who received us was nice, and then we got this trans lady called pherispaila or something like that. With all respect, who hired her? She was extremely rude, she treated us like trash, I asked questions about the sushi and she literally said “ read the menu”, I didn’t even finished eating and she brought the check. I left 5$ tip just for respect to her job, but why would you make people feel like this when the food is good? I hope this gets reviewed either by the owner or by the manager. My first and probably last stop at this restaurant. Is A shame that someone has to treat you like this and kills the vibe.
My name is Miguelangel pena, I left another review in store under the chicken soup, explaining the same thing.
Good pad thai
I’ve been eating here for some years now, and the food has been decent enough, but the service has gone downhill lately. Mainly, half the time I use the bathroom, if I’m in there for over a minute or two, staff members stand outside of the door and loudly discuss what is happening inside, as if that’s supposed to make me poop faster. Today, someone was in the men’s room for 10 minutes, so I used the women’s room (single occupant for both), and within 2 minutes, there were two female employees loudly talking outside the door, and when I opened it up, one had her head leaned against the door, and they laughed as I was walking away. Y’all gotta stop being creepy when I’m in the bathroom, because you have no idea what kind of trauma someone has been through. I won’t be returning anymore.
Edit in response to the owner:
I appreciate the apology. If you would like me to point you to literature explaining how single occupant bathrooms in Chicago are legally required to be for all genders, I would gladly do so.
Super
Good value near the Art Institute. Reasonably priced
delicious food and such kind servers!
there’s a whole vegan/vegetarian section on the menu, which i really appreciated.
my friend had a severe nut allergy and they clarified whether every single item on the table had nuts/possible cross contamination (without us even asking them to do that) so that we knew what we could share.
they also gave us pens to complete the christmas activities on the kids menu😁
SO nice!!!
We had a great experience here! Food was fantastic and service too! We will definitely be back!
The sushi was very fishy, the salad was good and service was okay. They handled our concerns well and didn’t charge us for the sushi rolls.
Great service. Ramen much much bttr than most other places.
Service was almost too good. Food came quickly, appetizers and entree at the same time. Appetizers lukewarm. Everything tasty, but if looking for a leisurely meal, this is not the place.
Nice little place in the middle of it all 🥰
It is such a shame that it is not possible to give <1 stars when rating restaurants. Would totally do so for this restaurant. Food was okay. Chinese fried rice was nice; tonkatsu ramen bowl was average. However, service was atrocious. Simply horrible. Every crew member was incredibly rude, almost to the point that it feels like they were planted there to make customers' dining experiences suck. When served our meal, the waitress was extremely grouchy. Furthermore, when we asked for one extra bowl, another waitress replied extremely caustically and cynically, "and anything else?" Made the atmosphere extremely uncomfortable and made us feel like it is illegal to ask for anything outside of what is provided—albeit extremely grouchily and reluctantly—by the crew. However, that was not it. Adding insult to injury was how the crew reacted after they found out about our discontent. After the second waitress (the one who cynically asked if we needed anything more) left, we talked among ourselves, agreeing not to provide any tip because of the simply egregious service. The crew must have overheard because after we passed the comment, every crew member became shockingly, artificially smiley when they passed by our table. Even when none of us were paying very much attention, we noticed out of the corner of our eyes that the crew would artificially smile at us. And finally, before we were finished, a waiter abruptly cleared the table without even asking us (as a matter of fact, we were not done). Not long after, the first waitress (the one who served us our meal) passed us the bill. This waitress then returned a while later, and waited as we wrote down the tip, smiling gleefully in anticipation of the cash. We kept to what we had said earlier about the tip, and the waitress immediately stomped off upon seeing the tip, and left the job of giving us back the bill, to the waiter. Collectively, these behaviors demonstrated that the crew put on smiley faces only when they realized that the revenue they receive would not be the amount they anticipated; they only tried to act more polite for the sake of the tip. We were totally cheesed off and would very much down-promote this restaurant.
Usually I don’t write a review for the places that I went. But only when it’s either very good or disappointing. In this case it’s disappointing. I’d say this is the place for Chinese food but definitely not for Japanese food. We ordered sushi rolls but they used regular rice to make sushi instead so of Japanese sushi rice which it’s very wrong for Japanese food. Totally don’t feel eating Japanese sushi at all. We also ordered miso soup but it came not hot at all. Try to go other places if you looking for Japanese food .
Food didnt quite taste right. The noodles in the ramen bowl were a little off, and the rice in the sashimi didnt taste right. The rest of the stuff in the ramen bowl was delicious, as was the miso soup. Service and atmosphere were great though.
Amazing definitely recommend whenever your at millennium park stop by for lunch it’s an amazing Thai/Japanese restaurant I am always ecstatic to go to Chicago just to have lunch there.
Incredibly mediocre food. They use tons of sugar in order to appeal to American tastes, and everything ends up tasting gross as a result.
Very cute little place that serves excellent sushi. Service was perfect and we had a nice time.
Nice place
Heerlijk Japans eten. Gezond en smakelijk, vers fruit en groente.
Love it!!! So many options, Japanese, Hawaiian, Chinese, and Thai! The presentation was gorgeous, amazing portions, amazing service, fun pop music at an appropriate volume and still super quiet.
It’s right next to the bean too! This place should be extremely packed, but it was raining today so we snagged a table to ourself. Would def come again when I’m in Chicago.
Food was extremely mid. The most bleh sushi I have ever had to be honest. The supposedly spicy firecracker roll had little to no spice. A friend ordered ramen and it came with a side of chicken that was pretty over cooked but also slimey and smelled like cat food. Some of the wait staff was nice but our server was pretty rude.
Great experience. Food was pretty good. Service was good too
Great variety of food at decent prices. I think the menu has a lot of thai, chinese, and japanese options so for people who are indecisive/in the mood for a bunch of dishes, this is the place. The fish tasted quite fresh and the seaweed and cucumber salads were amazing. Good service and good food! Totally recommend!
Cute place, bento boxes are amazing
The food here was sooo delicious and well worth the money. I haven't had ramen in forever and it was worth the wait. We came during lunch and it wasn't that busy but later for dinner it was packed in the restaurant! Such a cute place, the servers were so nice and helpful.
I ordered the mango poke bowl and what a rip off! They fill the base w salad and barely add toppings. Very little rice and VERY little salmon was on it. I regret not taking a picture of it. The flavors were good but this is not what a sushi bowl is! Cutting cost will now cost them customers - never again. If I’d seen it before hand i wouldn’t have paid or taken it.
I'm leaving a review about the last time I went because it sticks with me. This was about a year and a half ago.
The food was great, no complaints with that and I would recommend it! I'm a native to Chicago and had been here a couple of times alone and with a friend. But the final time I went i felt kinda uncomfortable being there. And that may be my fault?
I wasn't paying attention and accidentally mistaken my waitress for someone else that came to my table. (same hairstyle and clothes but it hit me once she left that it wasn't her and other staff witnessed this) I wasn't purposely being rowdy or anything just trying to be chill and polite (i did tip also!) but when I got to the end and paid I asked for a Chai tea latte by mistake and the guy at the counter was a bit miffed about it and said it's a Thai tea we are not a Starbucks. I laughed it off and went about my way but it left an effect on the experience cause I haven't been back since.
Going to other sushi places In Chicago I haven't had this experience of being uncomfortable or like they didn't really want me there, but here I felt that.
This place has to be a Chicago treasure! Great location in the heart of the city with amazing tasting food for a great price. I was expecting it to cost more because of the location and it being sushi but prices were pretty standard. There was alot of raw fish in the rolls they definitely didn't skimp out and provided a wonderful experience.
Hot Woks Cool Sushi is amazing to check out when you're at Millenium Park! The food is fresh, the service is great, and prices are fantastic! Max was our server and we had such a great time that we decided to come back again a few days later! 5/5 would recommend!
We ordered veggie soup, tuna tempura roll and philly roll. Veggie soup was amazing! Rolls are fine
I found this gem online, and am so glad I visited! Yum, yum, and yum! Cute little place with friendly staff who greeted me with a smile. The menu is wonderful with a variety of options for vegan or vegetarian taste buds.
I had the cucumber salad, and cashew chicken; and both were outstanding in flavor. All vegetables tasted so fresh, and the spices excited my palette. I can't wait to return to try other items and this has quickly become a favorite spot for me.
Ramen was horrible. Crab Rangoons were pretty decent. My friend said his bento box was good.
Standard sushi prices, but the food was only fine sadly. Not bad, but I've tasted better somehow. Very friendly staff and some nice views.
