Warm neighborhood Thai eatery serving curries & pad Thai made with locally sourced ingredients.
It's tiny and you'll miss this restaurant, if you're too focused on the obvious dining places. This tiny "hole-in-the-wall" serves authentic and distinctive Thai. Whether it's the peanut sauce, Thai iced tea, soups or fried rice dishes-no losers yet discovered on this menu. It has become a regular Hilo stop when we're doing the Farmers Market.
I took my visiting brother and sister-n-law here. My brother and I are vegetarian. The menu had a wide selection of vegetarian dishes as well as meat dishes. We tried about 6-8 dishes the 1st night, and all of them were so delicious! The Peanut sauce is my favorite(had to get some to go). We ended up going back a couple more times. This is a must-go place when you’re visiting Hilo on The Big Island of Hawaii! I recommend.
Enjoyed eating at this establishment, hosted was accommodating to our last minute 8 party reservation request and allowed us to split the bill. Food was had good flavors, with some dishes better than others and otherwise solid. Tasted more like how dishes would come out being cooked at home and less like those at other Thai restaurants I've been to with a few more tricks, but solid fare. I believe our waitress said the restaurant opened in 2022, and I wish them well.
If you enjoy Thai cuisine, this restaurant is a good choice. The fried rice and seafood are both delicious, and you can also choose different levels of spiciness! However, when it comes to recommending meat dishes, I'm not sure how to advise you!
We had a nice experience here. The owner was very friendly. The food came up very fast since we hurried to the airport.
This place is vegetarian friendly and so many options for vegetarian Thai food. We ordered the following items and everything was Thai hot.
Pad Thai - it was really good and the chilies were provided under the plate so once you mix it. It was like heaven.
Panang Curry with Brown rice - the best curry I have ever had and the brown rice was great. Everything was spicy and flavorful.
Mix vegetables with Sticky Rice - this was first time sticky rice were sticky I have had sticky rice at other Thai restaurants but this was authentic.
It was so good we went again and ordered so much had to take it to go. The food was amazing.
We were greeted with a very huge smile that instantly made me feel so welcome! A very homely and feel good place! The aroma coming out of the kitchen was so good!
I had found this place through google reviews and had at first thought it was a fancy place and then only realized it was like a cute kitchen with dining space!
This place is extremely vegetarian friendly and got us super thrilled! We ordered the pineapple fried rice and it was so yummy!! We also ordered fried Tofu and green papaya salad both of which were good but I loved the fried rice the best!
Great local experience! Quantity matches the price!
My favorite Thai food in Hilo. Hands down.
Great service, but unfortunately the food was a miss for us. We ordered four dishes to share, and the flavors just seemed "off" or bland. Great service though!
Low key hole in the wall that hands down has the best Thai in hilo possibly the whole island. Everything is always super consistent from the food to the service. The parking can be rough but after 430 you can park in the garden exchange lot and there's still street parking on the neighboring roads, a little walk never hurt anyone especially for this food.
Guessing it’s new owners. The curry tasted like yellow Chinese curry powder in it
The summer rolls were mostly lettuce the sauce a thick version of satay was awful. The prices were much higher than any other Thai restaurant in town
Too bad, it used to be really good
Great spot!
Delicious food, hospitable service! Must visit in Hilo for thai food
Excellent Thai food, fresh ingredients, generous portions, reasonable prices, friendly staff. Small casual place tucked away but only a few blocks from Farmers Market and central tourist zone
Excellent hole in the food Thai food place — the flavors were so authentic and the lady who was serving was really so warm! 10/10 recommend, don’t miss this one!
Went here twice durkng our stay!!
Fast forward 5 years, we are part timers out here and make this place our first stop every time we come home!

Favorite Thai place in Hilo! Great for catering for a large group
A very mediocre restaurant. The waitress couldn’t understand English so we ended up getting a slightly different dish than what we ordered. Also the waitress lady was not patient enough to listen and act. instead she quickly run away while you’re talking to her. We ordered fried rice which was okayish and was not spicy (waitress didn’t ask our spice level) and also tried pad thai which was very bad. It literally had chili powder all over it and not blended well with the noodles. I’ll never visit this restaurant again. My wife and I chose this restaurant since they have a lot of vegetarian options but it’s totally not worth it
I hate to leave bad reviews but unfortunately I came in for lunch and there was a large black beetle in my eggplant stir fry.
We stopped here for dinner and found out that the portions were small along with really bland tasting food. They don’t give much meat in their portions at all. Wouldn’t recommend it.
Possibly one of the worst Thai food our group has ever tasted. Avoid. Seafood Tom Yum ($28) has no tom yum flavor at the slightest. This is probably more targeted for tourists who don’t know what real Thai food taste like. Service was extremely slow too. I don’t usually write reviews but felt the urge to with this one to avoid people getting scammed.
Food was not very good. Portions are small and there’s barely any meat in the entrees, mostly veggies. Would not eat here again.
Before coming to this restaurant, I checked their online menu, which listed Currys for $14. When we arrived, we were told those world prices, and Currys were actually $17-$28 plus. We decided to leave, felt like false advertising.
Great food, nice service, parking is not available since it’s in the middle of street, parallel park at street or park after street and walk back, recommended for togo mainly if it’s dark.
Amazing food, good veggie options for vegetarians, amazing service… fresh ingredients….
Will i go again - yes
Parking - no issues
Ambience - ok
You want some good Thai food?
Cause this is the best.
The curries that are made here will beckon you to come back again and again. The full flavors in the pumpkin curry leaves one in awe.
A must add on to your order is the chilli oil they have. Wow wow wow. I promise you haven’t had one this one. So flavorful and with a sufficient spice level.
They are so so so kind here to. They always make my partner and I feel so welcome, they know our different order combinations so well we hardly have to order all the way.
It’s a Hilo must.
went because of good reviews. Worst pad Thai I've ever had, I can't even describe taste, inedible. pineapple curry tasted like plain coconut milk, no flavor. spring rolls were okay . waste of $42
Adorable quaint little restaurant with sweet considerate service. Best Thai food I’ve ever had!
I could not have a complaint about this place if I wanted to. The food was great, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the service was fast. The prices are a little high, but the portions are pretty large as well! It would probably be difficult to leave here after a meal and still be hungry.
Curry was excellent
Cucumber salad was delicious so wasn't the fried bananas!!!
Absolutely delicious!
Really good curry dishes. Interesting veggies, like purple potatoes and pumpkin. Brown rice was especially tasty and a beautiful color. I thought I knew good Thai food but this is REALLY good Thai food. My partner said level 2 spicy was too hot so be careful with your levels and we generally eat level 3.
We went to the restaurant for lunch and specifically requested basil fried rice. However, the server forgot our request and only brought plain rice. When I asked for basil, she initially refused and then brought plain basil. Additionally, I wasn't satisfied with the fried rice. To make matters worse, while we were still eating, the server asked if she could take away our dishes. Overall, I advise visiting this restaurant at your own risk.
The spring rolls were delicious but the pad see ew had no flavor. Service was good.
What happened to this place? I use to live next door and was always greeted warmly and felt special. When I went in recently I asked the server if I could sit in the front, She looked at me like I was speaking French we should have left them. She made everyone sit in the back all together because she didn’t want to have to move around. We use to go here monthly but the food is not good anymore and the ambiance, attitude and food leave a lot to be desired. Did they get new owners? Our whole party couldn’t finish all of our food.
Our fave Thai spot in Hilo. Great pumpkin curry. Place looks & feels like Thailand ( less humid ) :-)
Summer rolls with rice noodles
Usually, pumpkin curry is not part of my order at Thai restaurants but after Nuang Mai, I want it every single day!!! 🎃 wow it was the most delicious dish!
We also got the fried rice and changed the chicken & shrimp for pineapple and it was amazing.
Enjoyed eating at this establishment, hosted was accommodating to our last minute 8 party reservation request and allowed us to split the bill. Food was had good flavors, with some dishes better than others and otherwise solid. Small place but very good food, specially given that all curries are vegan (ie without fish shrimp or oyster sauces)
Big portions
We ordered veg+tofu red curry and veg+tofu basil fried rice
Mango sticky rice wasn’t good
We had to wait for a long time to get seated but once seated service was quick and good food
Will def come again
Medium is spicy but delicious. Go mild always for kids.
We were pleasantly impressed with how great the food tasted. Pineapple fried rice and summer rolls were top notch. The server was sweet and took efforts to know about us and made us feel warm
Yummy
Very yummy food
Best food I ate while on the Big Island. I went multiple times. I couldn’t get enough. I highly recommend this place.
I really liked this place and I just thought they should put more pieces of chicken on the
chicken curry and the chicken pad Thai.
The Thai Iced Tea it was very tasty and refreshing.
I wanted normal spring rolls, they brought me some fried things, not spring rolls. I got Coconut calamari, it was just deep fried squid, zero coconut anything.
Pumpkin curry was delicious and the sweet woman remade my papaya salad so it wasn't too spicy and I asked to add avocado. Thank you so much for the jasmine tea as well 🌸🎎
This is one of those rare treasures, where the food and flavours are extraordinary, the service is delightfully warm and friendly, and the venue clean and quaint, lacking any presumption of pretention.
We got takeout on our vacation and the staff was super friendly. The food was excellent!! Very good fast Thai food! I had the basil eggplant with tofu. My husband had the phad kae mae with chicken. I really appreciate the local sourcing and eco friendly containers
Aloha, Naung Mai Thai,,,,

I always joke with my Owen, about how I am going to get a overnight order sent inland,,,😂,😂we miss you guys,,,🙏aloha, & 🤲mahalo,
Owen and Carolyn ,see you soon.
I ordered the Thai Herb Salad with chicken. Unfortunately it was a basic American salad, with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and carrots & red cabbage garnish…no herbs. Doesn’t remotely resemble the photo on the menu. Pretty disappointing. Tried to raise the issue with the restaurant staff, who were friendly but dismissed it. I recommend they update the photos on their menu of this is what they are selling, it will help to avoid future disappointment.
Really good food. Would highly recommend.
Tasty pathay, delicious coconut soup and great green papaya salad. Very filling, and took home leftovers.
Cute little Thai place, great atmosphere & fantastic curry!
Nice small place and big flavors. Had Seafood Pineapple Curry with brown rice and it was one of the best curries, if not the best curry, I have ever had
Have not posted about this business in a couple of years, kind of forgot about because of the different choices in the area and we have to travel from the other side of the island. Food was outstanding. This is a traditional Thai restaurant with the food you are most comfortable with. I really like it.
Great Thai food in Hilo, best food ever, we enjoyed a lot. Thank you so much.
Authentic thai food with thai vibes! Definitely recommend.
Good food. Faster service
Great cuisine! I felt like in Thailand. Food is fresh and cooked with love. Toilet are clean and decorated with attention.
Chicken satay and spring rolls not bad. However, the summer rolls had very little shrimp, they did not heed our request for 4⭐️ spice, and the pad see ui was frankly the worst I have ever had. Maybe the curry was better, but I will not come again to find out.
The food came up very fast since we hurried to the airport.
delicious!!
Overpriced, small portions. No flavor only heat.
Everything was amazing. The service was amazing. The food was amazing. And the atmosphere was amazing. 9000/93
Green papaya salad and pad see ui were great.
The food is delicious and the service is great! There was unfortunately an odor coming from the street into the restaurant which affected the atmosphere but you can consider this place a little hidden gem.
What a delicious vegan-friendly place! Great thai food. We had the summer spring rolls, panang curry with tofu, pad kee mau, and mango sticky rice for dessert. Staff was very nice and welcoming, the food came fairly quickly, and it hit all the right spots with flavor and spice. Highly recommended💛
BEST THAI FOOD ON HILO SIDE
Beautiful little restaurant, authentic food, warm and welcoming staff. Priced well also- what more could you ask for.
Parking can be a bit tricky but so worth it to eat here. Definitely recommend the glass noodles and the seafood red curry. And of course a Thai tea!
Food was delicious. Made fresh to order. Service was very prompt and friendly!
Everything is OK, but most dishes have extra amount of sugar to fit US taste. Just like Panda Express compared to authentic Chinese food.
DO NOT ORDER GLUTEN FREE!
You will likely get "Glutened" as my daughter did.
Other than that... Normal people will enjoy good food in reasonable sized portions for a good price.
Loved their Panang curry with tofu and veggies and Thai iced tea. The Thai spring rolls tasted good but was a little too oily.
Other reviews were great so we drove out of the way to get here. I was definitely underwhelmed. I asked for mild, my friend asked for hot, and mine burned my mouth and hers was under spiced. Really, it was an overly expensive meal that was a disappointment. Sorry to have stopped.
The food was bland and tasted weird. We ordered pineapple fried rice which didn’t taste like fried rice at all. There was so dine-in service even though we went half hour before closing.
I had the yellow curry and it was the best I have ever had in my life. I had enough leftover that I had it for lunch the next day. The spring rolls were very good. And the pineapple fried rice was very delicious. I will definitely go back next time I am in Hilo.
Great local Thai spot, highly recommend.
Cute, cozy place with great customer service
hands down the best thaifood we had since we left Thailand 3 years ago. the Phad Thai was a bit too much on the garlic side but the yellow curry was definitely a class of its own. so was the cucumber salad. Amazing 🇹🇭🍛
Food was tasty and good.we ordered all vegetarian items in fried rice and curries. For parking, please check with the hotel in charge as it's a one way street with limited parking .
They have the best food. We really enjoyed it. Panang curry was awesome.
Friendly service and chicken fried rice was very tasty. Restaurant is small so if you have a large party seating is limited and may take a moment.
I'll make this quick and simple as nobody got time for an autobiographical review 🤙🏼
Please carefully check the street parking schedules. ‼️ You don't wanna get a ticket.
This place has no designated parking when we visited. So be careful 🤙🏼
Having said that, this place is absolutely worth visiting! 🤩
Delicious food! 🔥
Friendly staff. ✅
Restroom at the back. ✅
Follow me for more short but accurate reviews 😎🤙🏼
Food was ok, nothing special
The food is great and so is the service. I am going to recommend this place to friends. I want to return to try more items from their menu.
all 3 dishes we ordered were meh.. would not recommend
We walked here. This place is closed till further notice.
Said it was open. Walked for 20 mins in the heat to find it closed, no note or anything.
Amazing Thai food
Great service !!!
For a shrimp curry at $18, only 3 medium shrimp!
I’ve been to this restaurant twice last year and I was so excited to try it again this year, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The chef who was working did not put any care into the food he prepared. We ordered pad Thai with vegetables and egg and chicken green curry, medium spicy. The pad Thai tasted like ketchup noodles. The green onions weren’t even cut up, just thrown on there carelessly. Then, the curry tasted like watered down coconut milk. It had absolutely NO green curry paste and no spice at all. I told the waitress that the food wasn’t the same quality that I was used to and that it didn’t taste good. She wouldn’t give us a refund. It was really disappointing. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT AT ALL. PLEASE SPEND YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Best spring rolls, fast service, authentic flavors
Been to Thailand multiple times and love Thai food . I don’t expect taste the authentic thai food in Hilo but the two dishes I ordered are quite disappointing -satay and Par kee mao. Parkeemao was extremely salty .And the satay is shredded chicken soaked in curry sauce with peanuts sauce on the side . There is Thai food trunk , New Ching Mai nearby or even the Alloydee at food court ..don’t even bother coming here just because its central location . Plz refer to the dish photo !
Best peanut sauce ever. Awesome pumpkin curry. They accommodated gluten free with no problem whatsoever.
Unassuming from the outside, but excellent food, fast and friendly service!
Wonderful Thai food. Convenient to shopping at market. Better than more expensive restaurants in the area, more homey and friendly.
The Yellow Curry and the Pad Thai were pretty flavorless. The Massaman tasted like it was made with mayonnaise, and the vegetables weren’t fully cooked. It was also very expensive, which was really disappointing for such poor quality. The service was good though.
We went here right after we landed so we were pretty hungry. When you are hungry, everything should be good. But it turns out the food was just ok. We asked for fish sauce and the waitress said they don't have any. The atmosphere is gloomy and only one server. I would not recommend this place.
Tried a few Thai places in Hilo and this being the least favorite. Low quality food and way too expensive. Not recommended .
Pointed here by staff at the hotel. Best Thai food I've had, and where I live we do have good Thai food. We had Tom Yum, Calamari, and Snow Crab Curry. Delicious! We ordered it spicy and they delivered. Be prepared for shareable portions. Life affirming food!
Small eatery with very cooperative staff giving homily atmosphere
Great fish curry and salmon fried rice lots of veggies and fish
Placed an order over the phone. We ordered:
Chicken pad Thai
Shrimp pa see ui
Coconut calamari
Three star for both dishes
Quick pick up - price is typical on the mainland so it wasn’t a big deal
My sister and I thought the spicy wasn’t there and the food was eh. I liked the coconut calamari more than my actually dish.
Always excellent!
Too bland.
Small, quiet place with great food. Outstanding eggplant and tofu. We eat a lot of Thai food where we live in California, and Naung Mai's was some of the best we've had anywhere. The Indian family at the next table raved about the curries they ordered. We were early, but reservations are probably needed for later in the evening. Nice cozy place on a rainy day.
No idea where the good reviews come from, but the worst Thai food I've ever eaten. Flies in the rice, watery curry, inattentive waitress. Can't recommend this Restaurant.
Amazing tasting dishes for a great price. Must try the Thai Iced Tea.
Food was exceptional! Best Calamari we have ever eaten. My soup was delicious and had to get a go container. Will definitely be back again.
Very cute restaurant. Food is excellent and good prices. I have zero complaints.
Good food, tidy atmosphere. Can recommend for a pleasant lunch. Good vegetarian options.
Not typical thai food. My pad thai was void of any peanut or lime flavor, it was basically just red chili paste on noodles with veggies.
Excellent food. Amazing people :)
The food is Amazing
We like it so much we went back a second time !
The food here had fresh ingredients, but not very flavorful (green curry)as I have had at other Thai restaurants. Service was fast which made me think it was prepared ahead. Pad Thai noodles were sticky and sauce was not made with peanuts, due to allergies, we were told after we ordered it. That dish was so subpar we sent it back and chose something else. Nothing special about this place.
Solid summer roll appetizer - good mix of micro greens and fresh vegetables. The thai tea was delicious as well, very full flavor.
The beef pad kee mau was a bit runny with the sauce and a tad on the salty side. The beef was a bit over cooked. The chicken paw see ui was good, solid balance of flavors. Chicken was cooked perfectly.
I think the food is decent, the price is a couple dollars more than what's shown on the photos on Google. I wish there were more different varieties of food or at least some appetizers (they literally only have some phos, chicken noodle soups, and spring rolls). The quantity of each pho was on the lighter side, I was not full after one pho...
Always good!
Great place, good food, the place to go for great Thai food, five stars.
Delicious food at reasonable price
Food and service was excellent!
Very good. Highly recommend
We absolutely loved the yellow curry! Delicious and fresh!
Our go to place in Hilo. Absolutely amazing food! No alcohol
So good, so much flavor
Good prices and portion. Pad Thai had an odd aftertaste and the Curry paste used was a bit too sweet.
Service was friendly and prompt and interior atmosphere is nice, but our takeout yellow curry tasted very watered down and bland. It was almost like eating sweet coconut milk. Maybe it was an off day though.
Small family run restaurant. Very tasty and not as busy as other ones.
Service was pretty good. This review is strictly about the food.
I’m really confused about this place, their food doesn’t taste like Thai food at all. Only thing that was ok was the Thai ice tea.
We order:
* Pad Kee Mao: for some reason very sour. The noodle is not the flat noodle I’m used to, instead it’s some rubbery roll of thick noodles.
* Green curry: Doesn’t taste the curry at all, it’s basically a bowl of creamy coconut soup.
* Coconut shrimp appetizer: it was ok, it was crunchy.
The food was good but it was way too spicy and when we asked for them to fix it they didn’t do much and they charge money for everything even for the takeout boxes. Mango sticky rice was not at all worth. Raw mangoes and not tasty. Not satisfied for what we paid! Not going back here again. I don’t recommend this place. Its tooo expensive. Funny is even they have separate price for ice water and normal water.
Amazing food and service, it is a small nondescript place but had an awesome menu . Food was tasty, great for vegetarians too
Yum! Service, pumpkin curry, red rice, panang curry, spice level (ordered spicy on everything), and papaya salad were all delicious and fairly priced
Very good Thai food and service. I ordered the coconut milk tapioca for dessert. Warm or chilled (at home), it was unbelievably delicious 😋👍🏼
Food was ok but nothing noteworthy, fish curry was overpriced (even by San Francisco standards). Slow for takeout to be ready.
The food was good and pretty large portions - my red curry was plenty for two meals I think. Just a word of warning - the closing time was listed as 9pm and we got there a few minutes after 8p and we're told it was to go orders only. That was a shame since we had an hour plus drive ahead of us back to the other side of Island and trying to eat in the car would have been a pain. But I get it with COVID and trying to get closed up at a reasonable hour. They were still busy taking orders and we got our food in about 15 minutes and took it home to eat later so no biggie. Seems like this is a popular place with locals who are lucky to have a tasty Thai place.
Not sure how we ended up with a much different experience than all the other reviews... we ordered takeout (Red Curry, Mixed Vegetables Stir Fry, Pad Thai, and Funn Noodles) and all the food was overwhelmingly bland. The Pad Thai was by far the most underwhelming, not only was it bland, but we ordered Medium spice and there was no heat to be found. The noodles were also overcooked and gummy. Heads up that this place is not consistent and you may be disappointed.
This was super good and tasty. We got the yellow curry and would highly recommend it as well as the dessert!
