Down-to-earth eatery with shophouse-style decor & a menu of familiar Thai specialties.
Hippie Thai on Haight Street offers a vibrant and laid-back atmosphere that blends the charm of San Francisco’s eclectic culture with authentic Thai flavors. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a cozy vibe—think colorful decor and funky touches that give the place a relaxed, almost bohemian feel, in tune with the neighborhood’s spirit.
The menu at Hippie Thai is a treat for both adventurous eaters and those craving comfort. They serve a variety of classic Thai dishes, from tangy Pad Thai and spicy Green Curry to flavorful Som Tum (green papaya salad) and hearty Tom Yum soup. Every dish is packed with bold, aromatic flavors that make it clear they use fresh ingredients and traditional spices. The balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy is spot-on, especially in dishes like the Pad See Ew and Massaman Curry, which are rich and satisfying without being overpowering.
The service is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. While the portions can be a bit on the smaller side for the price, the quality of the food makes up for it. It’s also great for those looking for vegan or vegetarian options—many dishes can be customized to fit dietary preferences.
Overall, Hippie Thai provides a flavorful journey through Thailand’s culinary landscape, all within the relaxed, quirky vibe of Haight Street. Whether you’re looking for a casual lunch or a fun dinner outing, this spot is definitely worth checking out for those craving authentic Thai food with a bit of local flair.
Not your typical Thai, a casual outpost serving a wide selection of noodle soups as well as made-to-specification curries, tom kha / tom yum, and stir-fries.
Su Kho Thai Pork Belly Soup, choice of rice noodle served in herbaceous (almost medicinal) broth, loaded with ground pork and crispy fried pork belly, topped with fried wonton skin.
Decent pitstop for flavors Southeast Asian when walking along Haight.
Decent food, but as a Thai person, it really could be more flavourful. I ordered my food spicy, but the waitress gave me a weird look and asked if I meant to order medium spicy. I told her I wanted spicy, but when the food came it could hardly be called mild spicy. Maybe I should have ordered directly in Thai, but for the benefit of my English speaking friends I went with, I spoke in English. In any case, I finished the food and it was good, just didn't hit the spot. Next time I might try something else, but if I want larb, I might just make my own at home. The satay was really juicy and well marinaded though. I've had satay at other places that were very dry and the slices more thin. I can definitely recommend their satay.
We ordered pad Thai and when we got the food it was chicken in some bag. Mind you they tie the bag so I couldn’t see it. When I went to go open the food I realized it was not pad Thai but literally chicken wrapped in tin foil and my spring rolls. All of that cost 28 dollars. When I went for the refund she said they don’t give it and that she confirmed with me that my order was this tinfoil chicken. Who the hell orders that and pays that much money for it?
It was gross by the way. Wouldn’t have left this review if she would have taken the food back and given me the correct one like I asked.
If you only have one chance to eat in SF, then do it here! The food is delicious, wonderfully seasoned, with sauces that are almost addictive. Most dishes are basically vegetarian, you can choose from different meat offered or leave it.
We were served very very friendly and were so enthusiastic that we made a big detour through SF the next day, just to be able to eat here again.
Hippie Special was AMAZING. Look at how crispy that fish is! Asked for no squid/octopus on mine.
Also, mangos are in season, and their mango sticky rice was very good, perfectly sweet mango.
My friend ordered tea, the pot it arrived in was beautiful.
No frills place, and it was a cold day w the door opening. But for that food, it’s worth it.
The employee was so rude and told us to leave before 10 . And she will rob you for a tip even thought her service is bad
Just did take out. Good pad Thai. Waitress was nice. Good vibes all around. No bad news today.
Food was fresh fast and Good. Maybe 6 tables, just like 90% of these Asian dinners nothing special for tables or convince. Staff was good and fast.
The most delicious pad Thai with crispy pork and great service. Highly recommend.

Amazingly delicious food. Excellent service.
good very good..

I just enjoy this place - it is consistent and does what it does just right.
I like the Khao Soi noodle soup it’s 10/10. I also like their Pad See Ew

Abbiamo due zuppe di noddles niente male! Non richiedono la mancia ed il locale sembra essere gestito da una famiglia tailandese.

Crazy delicious. All the food is freshly made, all the veggies are fresh and crispy-crunchy, and the food is amazingly flavorful. Plus the waitress was very sweet 💙. I had the spicy basil chicken with egg and it was amazing! The basil flavor really came through strongly, but it wasnt overpowering in any way. I highly recommend it. Also the lunch combo gives a wide variety of food that would be great for anyone who cant choose just one thing. Their menu also has many options with it all very clearly labeled and easy to read. I will be coming back!!!!!
Tough to make bad thai food but they accomplished it...
I arrived at this place at 8:55pm and the waitress refuse to take my order for dine in because they close at 9:30pm. That’s why it was empty, the service is terrible. It was June 27, Thursday, 2024.
Food was very tasty!! Portions are big, and service was nice!
Great food, great service, and were willing to host a big on just a few moments notice! ^=^
Pad see ew was delicious. Noodles were extra wide and fresh. Food came quickly.
Comida rica, muchas restricciones para comer ahí (consumo mínimo), aunque el lugar estaba prácticamente vacío.
Ordered pad see ew with pork - they used too much soy sauce so I felt sick after 6 bites. Couldn’t finish it. Spouse got green curry. Rice is an extra $3 for curry. Spouse said it lacked flavor and the ingredients weren’t steeped in the stew long enough to have any flavor.
The portions were small for the price, especially the chicken wings.
I had the pork belly soup and oh my goodness what a massive portion! Tons of flavor. It was all delicious and our service was friendly.
So good! The Hippie Special is fantastic. Good spice!

Delicious pad thai! So flavorful
The food is bad.
The service is good (fast).
Had their tom kha gai soup. It was very disappointing, sweet broth, canned mushrooms, rubbery shrimps.
I was extremely hungry, but still couldn't force myself to eat it.
I think this place gave me food poisoning and they poured water in my 4$ sprite. also they gave my meal to another table first. i wasn’t going to leave a review but i ate here 3 days ago and my stomach is still distraught. don’t get the kua noodles
I am usually not a fan of Thai food restaurants as they often make the food too sweet. This place was the best Thai restaurant I have ever been to. Very flavorful delicious food and not too sweet. And they don't use MSG in their food. I highly recommend this restaurant! And it's cute too with very nice service.
Hippie Thai left a lasting negative impression with its unwelcoming atmosphere from the moment I walked in. The vibe was uncomfortable, and I felt scrutinized as I walked from the bathroom back to my table. Witnessing two workers being aggressively confrontational with customers only intensified the discomfort. In hindsight, I regret not leaving the moment I sensed something was off. The overall experience was far from enjoyable, and I strongly advise against dining at Hippie Thai.
Love the food here. The location is super convenient. They have a cute, small dining area with tables. Each person is required to get at least one appetizer or entree FYI. They also have lots of great vegan options, although the only vegan protein choice is fried tofu. Decent beer selection. All the usual food you can expect in a Thai restaurant, and then some. Very large menu. The food was spicy 🥵, but not outrageously so. Ask for less spice if you're super sensitive.
Great spot- really liked the Pad See Ew
Nice staff and quick service.
Yummy Thai food and a cool environment.
Just okay. I picked up my food because I’ve heard they had bad service. The person over the phone sounded lukewarm. The food was not worth the price nor the 20 minute walk there. I got the pad thai. The chicken was over cooked and the noodles did not have much flavor
Hit or miss place. Hippie noodle bowl was very good and fresh as were the spring rolls. Their meat skewers were tough and tasted freezer burned. Soups are ok, Tom Ka a little on the sweet side.
Bad service. Bad attitude.
U can't only order drink. You have to order food as well. Minimum.
Delicious hot food, good service, a bit dark inside. I'll be back 😍
Horrible food and horrible service. The table was dirty when we came in and the server seemed annoyed when we asked to have it cleaned. The pad Thai tasted like straight ketchup and when I sent it back the server asked if I’ve ever liked it or had it before. She rolled her eyes took the food away and never came back to me. Save your money don’t bother coming here.
Food: not the best I had experienced. Service: 2 young ladies with very minimal quit negative attitude We got the feeling we are bothering them. The place is ok minus.
Price for value - not good.
We will not return.
Very decent Thai place if you're in the area, nothing special but the people there are all Thai and speak Thai. Worth a shot if you're in the mood for Thai. Small seating area but good people watching close to the window.
The food is really good and the guys are very kind
Great Thai Food. I had the Hippie Special which is a garlic noodle dish with seafood that was very fresh. My girlfriend had Kow Soi which was really tasty as well. Also, try the Japanese sodas, they don’t disappoint.
Super nice food!
So happy my little family and I stumbled on this place! Everything was amazing!!! Tom yum is unique, I usually don’t like Tom yum but this one was not overly sour, just right. We ordered pad Thai, Pad see ew, chicken satay, steamed veggies, fried rice and jasmin rice, Everything was amazing and the owner was extra lovely telling us about her special chili, it was spicy but full of flavor! I will be back next time I’m in SF!
Einigermaßen authentisches Thaifood aber völlig überteuert.
Still there. This review is proof that I don't hate everybody in the world. This place provided the best Thai food that I've had in this country. We were provided phenomenal service. Their thai teas are authentic tasting instead of just sugary.
Also, their food came out lightning fast and I can't find a complaint for the life of me. I really want to buy the t-shirts but I'd have to buy like five of them.
Great experience here, food was amazing and the service was very friendly.
Super spicy, not so good.
Amazing food
Considering that 'hippies' are pro animal rights and mostly vegetarian, this place offers mainly meat and did not give me any 'hippie vibes'. Seemed more like a marketing strategy.
Great neighborhood Thai place for casual dine in or take out.
Expensive, overpriced, but decent food. Costumer service was alright, could not tell if the waiter was mad at me or just trying to be friendly but failing. The food took around 17 minutes to come. I got the pad thai. The noodles were flavorful and juicy. Texture was nice and moist. The chicken was under flavored and dry. Overall decent pad Thai, but way to expensive for the quality that they are serving
Hippie Thai was my go to Thai place in the city. I went on a Saturday recently and the food went downhill. My Rad-Na dish had wayyy too much white pepper. There were visually clumps of white pepper all over the vegetables and on the noodles. It made it incredibly difficult to enjoy. I don't know if I'll go back again
Food was the best! Cold due to direct airflow
I had no idea Thai food could be so devoid of flavor and cost so much. I had the yellow curry with chicken. The potatoes were still hard.
Good, reasonably priced Thai food in the Haight.
This place is tasteless and overpriced. There are better Thai places down the street for a lot less.
My always go to when I'm in SF and love the location...
Rudest server ever. Decent food. Place kind of stinks, low to no maintenance to that place at all.
Closes way too early... I ordered and was given boxed food... Closes at 930 on the nose.
Panang curry and beef pad see ew were delish. Would def come back
Quick service, extensive menu, and good quality Thai food. I ordered the crab fried rice and it came out piping hot and with a good amount of flavor. Great neighborhood eat.
Great and authentic taste, but terribly capitalistic. Customer next to me ordered a similar curry dish, but received a portion twice the size of mine. When asked about it, the waitress said they had the “seafood” option instead of “beef”, which should explain the portion size. Not only that, but rice DOES NOT come with any curry dishes and has to be order for $3/$4 separately. I’ve never been to any Thai resistant before that doesn’t include any rice with a curry dish, not even when you spend more than $20 on a curry… Moral of the story, if there’s a way to upsell, this place has you covered!
Great if you like REAL Thai food. Lived in Thailand 8 years. I'm VERY picky about Thai food. I do not want Americanized Thai food. My friend from Thailand had been here and she recommended it. The som tam and khanom moo gop were excellent.
Great options for veg and non veg alike. Food was pretty good and quantities large! Got a Thai iced tea which hit too!
Try chicken pad Thai. So sweet. No spice. Noodles very sticky. Unfortunately won't be back, read other negative reviews. Maybe some are happy, there's better thai food. Paid $18.00 & quality and flavor 2-stars.
My family loves this small family run business and call it the best street Thai food on Haight and Cole Valley.
Disgusting low quality food. Chicken penang watery. Chicken broth soup tasteless and veggies were hard
I should have the reviews on google before ordering.... seems like this place has really gone downhill. I ordered the larb with pork and chicken pad thai, medium spicy. The larb is flavorless and the pad thai doesn't have a lick of spice - not even a little bit. Very disappointed, I won't be ordering from Hippie Thai again.
Good. Probably really good on the right day.
Stopped in here for lunch. Food was awesome and the staff outstanding.
True authentic Thai dishes.
The best Kha Soi I had in a really long time
Came here for early dinner. Ordered a tom yam noodle soup but was very confused when we were served a sweet soup that did not have any hint of lemongrass. It was also not spicy at all. It tasted more like boat noodles.
Checked with the server and she said it was correct. Either they don't know how to make Tom yam soup, or they thought they could pass it off as Tom yam..
The thai iced tea is authentic though, but will not be coming here again.
Love the curry puffs
Went to dine in, food came out hot. Tasted pretty good, but then…. I watched the chef walk out front to smoke a cigarette wearing his blue kitchen gloves, after he was finished he came back in and went right to work with the same dirty gloves…. If he will smoke in them what else will he do in them? Grossed me out, didn’t go back after that.
The food was great, but the people weren't super nice. They could learn a bit about customer service.
Rude af. Foods Ight
Good food, very kind servers. They interacted with our baby and in general we felt very welcome
Overall the food was just okay. Both dishes we had were pretty bland for Thai food (crab fried rice and a noodle dish). Wouldn't recommend eating here if you can avoid it.
Delicious food and very hospitable
Awful service. Awful food. I wanted to order directly from the restaurant and steer clear of 3rd party apps.
The veggie spring rolls were gross and almost like frozen food not made there
The yellow curry had 1potato
The pas sew yew had no sauce
Avoid this place at all costs.
You are wasting your money
I never ever have felt the need to write a review until today Thai food is one of my favorite foods and I get it all the time this was my first time here my rice was over cooked at the bottom and my pork tasted rotten , also the egg I had was green on the bottom stuff was not fresh at all .My boyfriend got some chicken and rice, chicken was way over cooked and also the rice was overdone like mine we both in total ate about two bites. We did still leave tip cause they were kind and service was good but food was 0 out of ten . Very unhappy for 46 dollars
Service was great but the food was terrible. The fresh shrimp rolls were far from fresh and the stir fry noodles were abit burned. They got a great location but sadly not a great food
Delicious and fast
Very solid Thai food at a not expensive price. Quick service, great taste. Comfortable vibe. Great option if you’re on Hayes St needing a quick meal/bite.
Excellent flavors and attentive and unobtrusive service!
Always the best, friendliest service, always clean, always prompt. Food is consistently delicious, hot, and fresh. Tom yum spicy noodle soup and pad kee mao are absolute favorites.
I drool even when I think about their Pad-kee-mao... Good Stuff!
Food is fresh and always tastes great.
So good just moved into the neighborhood and can’t stop coming here very kind staff and tasty dishes
I order the kow moo dang with bbq pork, crispy pork belly and chinese sausage. The dish was presented beautifully and delish. The red curry sauce was super with the crispy pork belly. Service was prompt and courteous. Covid protocols are strictly enforced here for everyone. It was a great meal and experience.
Pretty great Thai, a bit pricy but worth it
One of my favorite thai places in the neighborhood! Would definitely recommend.
delicious egg rolls, quick service, great food
Great food, nice staff! Need to show your ID and vaccination card to eat inside. I witnessed a couple giving the poor waitress grief about it. 🙄
Visit here when we're in the area. Tradition for 20 years
Friendly place with a nice lunch special. Food is delicious.
I visited SFO for work purpose and found this little restaurant hoping to get the same hospitality and tasty food like I had when I visited Thailand before. It was a wrong decision because the waitress was rude and impolite. The food was too gravy and I found a hair inside the food. I tried Thai food many times either authentically when in Bangkok or other cities, this one was the worst one. Only the location is good, other than that, unfortunately, zero.
the staff was super rude since the moment we stepped into the restaurant. She made my friend waiting for 30 minutes to get to the toilet because she said 2 people were inside that later on we found out there was no one there. She clearly has no idea about hospitality. I decided to cancel my order and suddenly she realized she still need customer and money. My friends that stayed and consumed there got diarrhea and sore throat because of the food.
I love love this place. The food is delicious. I like to get the Lunch special from 12:00-3:00 pm. It's a great deal! I believe for $15 I get Thai Fried rice, and vegetable spring rolls, and it also comes with soup and a little salad on the plate. The portian is so large that I always need a box. Also the Thai iced tea is awesome.I always tip over 20% because the service is so great. All three waitresses I have experienced have all been equally lovely.
Super rude staff, having a lot of attitude, food was not fresh, like eating a cheap cup noodle.
I loved the Thai coffee and the food was great.
The meat fried egg rolls were still cold inside. The sauce that came with them was too sweet. And the chicken laab salad wasn’t very authentic, missing galangal, finely sliced lemon grass, lime, fish sauce, cilantro, and some sort of chili, as well as sufficient mint—the single decorative sprig wasn’t enough. I brought it home to doctor it up here! The server was sweet, though.
Excellent Thai in a modest environment. Some of the best Thai I have tasted. I suggest the "Hippie Thai" dish, which has delicious thin noodles with shrimp. I had the Pad See Ew with chicken--yummy. My daughter had tasty Red Curry with rice. Enjoy!
Good.
Great restaurant! The staff is so friendly and the food is fantastic. I love their Tom Yum!
The food was really good and authentic. We ate two vegan soups: veggie noodle soup and the Tom Kah. Both were very tasty and included tofu and many fresh vegetables. The other ate see food and chicken dishes with rice and were very satisfied from them. The service was very good and helpfull.
really great pad see ew!
Deliciouuuuuuuuuus!!!
Servicio rápido y muy buena comida
Good food but the desert was ok
Great wings and pad thai!!
Food was yummy, no complaints there. But 1 of the 3 dishes I ordered were incorrect. I ordered a shrimp pineapple fried rice and they made it chicken, which I don’t eat. My sister placed a separate order and didn’t get her Thai tea, which we thought was in the bag (but it was curry lol) I would understand if they were busy and accidentally overlooked these things but they weren’t, in fact we got our food pretty quickly, but inaccurate so make sure your order is correct before leaving.
I had the hippie special, its was great, will definitely come back again.
Great service, awesome green beans and delicious springrolls you can tell they made their food fresh to order would definitely recommend if you find yourself in the area
Did not give us napkins, found two tiny bones in my beef, and my beef dish was overpriced. Really good Thai tea though.
Got me delicious seafood noodles soup!
Panang curry is to die for!
Great food, huge menu!
