Waited 40 mins to get served food I could have made better at my house, in less time and far less expensive... On Valentine's day -- Avoid.

Diner Review №2

Garbage customer service and a complete ripoff. 2 measly sized chicken satay skewers for $12? Pad Thai with 4 shrimp total for $20? Never again.

Diner Review №3

I lived in Southeast Asia for 10 years so I am very, very picky about Thai food. This place tastes like a restaurant in Thailand. We ordered the chicken laarb and pork neck extra spicy, and it was properly spicy! The staff are cute, the environment feels like you're in Bangkok (down to the details like steel soup spoons), and the food was excellent. Fresh herbs, spices, fish sauce, and everything. I love that they did not dampen the flavor. So glad to have found this place!

Diner Review №4

Dropped in randomly for dinner as we were walking down the street, turned out well. All the food was at least quite good, and some of it was excellent. The staff were pleasant and pretty efficient. I'm not in this neighborhood often, but it was good enough I might go out of my way to go back.
It's a little more unique than most thai places, which can have remarkably similar menus, they have some things on the menu I don't see as often. The food seemed to me more like places I've eaten in Thailand, not sure if that's more authentic to what thai people actually eat or just what restaurants in Thailand feed to tourists :-).

I am visiting from Montréal and my friend brought me here since he had a great first experience himself. He had expressed how helpful and friendly the staff was when he did not know what to order. My first experience was also great with the staff. Once feeling at ease, I can enjoy the food! And Basil struck the right balance of sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and bitter that Thai food is known for. Thank YOU for the experience 🙏

Love the vibe in here, the food is great, the servers are vey nice. Our waiter Junior was especially helpful and welcoming. I don’t know why this place doesn’t have higher stars because it was perfect sharing experience for my friends and I! Can’t wait to come back and support!

This is a cool, aesthetic spot to get Thai food downtown. They have all the classic dishes and a fun list of cocktails, although I didn’t try the drinks when I visited. I got the crab fried rice and was very satisfied with the food. Prices are on the higher end, but that’s to be expected given the location. The service couldn’t have been better. The waiter was attentive, and the food didn’t take too long to arrive.

The only somewhat annoying thing was the menu listed the entrées with super generic names like “pan-fried fat rice noodle…” first followed by the Thai name like pad see ew, pad Thai, etc. This made the menu confusing to read, especially given the dim lighting. Considering SF’s diverse clientele and the ubiquity of Thai cuisine in California, I feel like the majority of people are familiar with the Thai names, so it’s unnecessary to westernize them, which only results in making the menu less customer-friendly.

Smaller restaurant so if you have a larger group- def recommend making reservations. Atmosphere was cute and service was good. Food was amazing! Didn’t get to try their cocktails this time but they looked interesting!

Diner Review №17

Tasty foods, not cheap.

Diner Review №18

The place looks very good and the staff is nice. I ordered a lemonade and a seafood mix, the seafood mix was not the best choice for me. The shrimp and the scallops were nice and very spicy, but the squid felt like rubber, very hard to eat, same with the octopus. Maybe I just did the wrong choice of plate and they have better ones. I would totally consider going again but because of my experience was not the best I’m giving 4/5

Diner Review №19

Good happy hour deals! $5 beer, $8 apps, $9 wine and $10 cocktails. I got the panang curry with short ribs for dinner - it was delicious but didn’t taste like any other panang I’ve had, the curry was moreso a thick and heavy gravy. Delicious nonetheless!

Diner Review №20

Diner Review №21

We got the green curry with grilled vegetable & the red curry with tofu & pumpkin & vegetables which were both so amazing. So much extra vegetables & sauce it was delicious. We came for our 2 year anniversary & they spoiled us with ice cream to celebrate. What an awesome experience. Thank you to our server Junior <3

Diner Review №22

Hands down. The. Best. Thai. In. SF.

That’s right, I said it. Despite tons of options for Southeast Asian food in the city, Basil still takes the top spot for best Thai food I’ve had in the three years here.

The Panang Curry with braised short rib is absolutely everything. Without a doubt, order this dish. The velvety coconut curry sauce coats incredibly tender, high quality pieces of beef. We literally almost licked the plate, it was that good!

The pad thai was a great second plate, though I do wish the shrimp came tail-free (just a personal preference). We enjoyed all of the cocktails, with my personal favorite being the BKK Negroni. All-in-all, we were extremely happy with everything we had!

The one drawback is that the service, though warm and friendly, just frankly seems green. Despite several tables still open, the service was spotty and slow — we had drinks forgotten and entrees arrive sporadically between one another.

The entire dining experience took about 45 mins longer than it needed to, but the saving grace was that the food was freaking phenomenal. The staff wasn’t rude or anything — quite the opposite — but really needs to tighten up their ship to take this from four stars to a home run 5 outta 5.

Diner Review №23

Great dishes, service and atmosphere. Their Thai iced tea is addicting!

Diner Review №24

Food is delicious and not oily like other thai places. Took out 1 star because not many thai food options. But food was delicious and service super fast. All food items arrived together and within 15 min of ordering. Cocktails were also made perfectly. Presentation on point.

Diner Review №28

Solely because they charge $3.50 for rice. Absolutely ridiculous… and when i asked, the “manager” (quotes because it was clearly a random waiter) mentioned that they started offering rice as an addon because “it’s all about the low carb diet these days” LMAO like…. Mental

Update: 5 min after I wrote this review a mouse scurried past a table of women who shrieked in response.

Unappetizing bias. It's unfortunate this restaurant treats people of color differently. The restaurant was not even a quarter full, having dinner around 5 p.m., but we were denied for my kid and I, to sit at a table of four to be next to each other, so I can help cut her food. We were told we could only sit at a table for two, across from each other. Okay, so we sat where they put us, no problem. Yet, as we're having dinner, there was a white party of two, who were offered the table for four, followed by another white couple of two too, who got treated better, and were offered the table for four again. When I called it out to the waitress because she physically came to move my kid's chair to scoot her in, so she can sit someone else behind her, she said she was not racist and if we wanted to move now, in the middle of dinner. Then had the nerve to say it was because they were saving the tables for reservations. I was hurt that regardless of how well I dress, how hard I work at exposing my little girl to other cultures and foods, we can't get treated fairly, and I'm the one that has to be measured to not make a scene, and I won't, because my child is watching my reactions and learning from me. I tipped, not for the racist experience from the women that work here, but because as a woman of color, I don't want others to be treated the way we were, I live in the area and I can hold my head up high if I see them in the street again. The food was just not good enough to ever return anymore. This was not a one off here, but it's taught me now for sure, that they don't deserve my money ever again.

Diner Review №51

Food was delicious and portion sizes were large. The staff was kind and thoughtful. I loved the aguachile and thought the seafood was very fresh and flavor was very good.

Diner Review №52

My friend and I went to Basil Thai Restaurant and Bar for SF restaurant week, and it struck a positive chord with its nice ambiance and friendly service.
The restaurant itself has a contemporary feel, with sleek décor and a lively atmosphere. Our server was attentive and prompt, making sure our water glasses were always full and answering any questions we had about the extensive menu.

Speaking of the menu, it's a Thai food lover's dream! They offer a wide array of dishes, from classic noodle and fried rice options to soups, salads, rice plates, and enticing snacks. Their Restaurant Week deal for $45 included a three-course meal and a drink. And that's what we tried. They also had happy hour going on when we were there, so we ordered some snacks and drinks on the side - $10 cocktails, $6 snacks, $5 beer, and $9 house wine.

Here's a breakdown of some of the dishes we tried:

Steamed Pork & Crab Dumplings: While the filling was flavorful, the dough was a bit thick and undercooked at first. We mentioned this to the staff, and they kindly offered to cook them a bit longer. The second attempt was better, but the dough was still a tad thicker than ideal.

Thai Aguachile: This dish was a refreshing take on ceviche. Shrimp, scallops, and squid were bathed in a zesty lime marinade and served with crispy sesame rice crackers. It was a perfect light and flavorful starter.

BBQ Pork Ribs: The ribs were not your typical fall-off-the-bone ribs but they were cooked well. The accompanying green papaya and carrot slaw provided a nice crunch, while the smoked tomato relish added a touch of smokiness that balanced the sweetness of the ribs.

Pan-Roasted Japanese Scallops: These perfectly cooked scallops were bathed in a savory Thai XO sauce and accompanied by tempura green beans. It was delicious and beautifully presented dish.

Sweet Mango & Coconut Cream Sticky Rice: This classic Thai dessert did not disappoint. The sticky rice was perfectly cooked, and the sweetness of the mango paired beautifully with the creamy coconut sauce.

Thai Iced Tea: A refreshing and classic beverage to complement the meal.

We also tried a few other dishes that were not on the Restaurant Week menu but were definitely worth it:

Indian Flat Bread & Curry: This dish offered a delightful surprise – crispy flatbread paired with a flavorful and savory vegetable curry.

Corn Fritters, Cucumber Salad 'Kao Pode Tod': These crispy fritters were a delightful textural contrast to the cool and refreshing cucumber salad.

Overall, Basil Thai offers a modern take on classic Thai dishes with a focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients. While the undercooked dumplings were a minor misstep, the friendly service, extensive menu, and delicious food make it a great choice for a fun and flavorful dining experience. Especially with the Restaurant Week deal, it's a great opportunity to try a variety of their offerings at a good value.

Diner Review №53

Delicious food. Huge portions. Amazing wait staff. Great vibe.

We went for the first night of SF Restaurant Week expecting small bites given the moderately low price point. Instead, each app and main course was a meal on its own. Add in a dessert and drink?! This might have been the best deal in town.

I've also eaten there on a normal night - the food and drink menus were equally good. Well worth a visit.

Diner Review №54

Omg! Amazing food and super nice staff. Try the braised pork... best EVER!!!

Diner Review №55

Some of the best Thai food in SOMA! Highly recommend. We had VERY slow service, but that was because there were two large groups. Typically it’s pretty standard.

Diner Review №57

One of my favorite Thai spots anywhere in CA. Pad See Ew is out of this world. Also the catfish is must try.

Diner Review №58

Moody waitress and ridiculously salty food. The menu is very boring and they don’t have classic curries.

Diner Review №59

Five stars for the seafood noodles, super umami broth (on the sweeter side) and lots of fresh seafood.

Three stars for the crab fried rice. Very bland and too healthy (low oil) even for my taste!

Diner Review №60

Our visit to Basil was quite the culinary journey. Beyond the usual offerings found at any other Thai restaurants around, this place serves dishes that break the mold. The Green Curry Roti-Taco was great, and the Larb Gai was an explosion of flavors - the perfect balance of sweet and salty. The classic Tom Kha with chicken, while good, felt like it missed a subtle note. Cheun Yaw and grilled corn were average, nothing too memorable.

On the cocktail front, the Sake Leche presented an unusual yet intriguing flavor, while the Berry Tequila was a hit, brimming with deliciousness.

Overall, Basil offers authentic Thai at a reasonable price, accompanied by a noteworthy drink list.

I'll definitely be returning, with that Larb Gai and Berry Tequila on my mind.

Diner Review №68

SCAM! Please dont waste ur hard earned money. No wonder they have no customers

Diner Review №69

Diner Review №70

One of the most authentic Thai kitchen this city has to offer, IMHO.

Diner Review №71

A very disappointing experience. The pad Thai was excessively sweet and it smelled not of fish but pork. There was no sour or spice to it. I sent it back asking for a vegetable curry coconut. Again only sweetness, no other flavor. The Thai cafe was also incredibly sweet and the coffee was very light. They had me pay for the returned Pad Thai. Both the cook and the owner shall know better. To avoid!

Diner Review №72

Delicious Thai food! Not very spicy.

Diner Review №73

Every dish we ordered was flavorful and the service was excellent. If your in SF you need to stop by.

Diner Review №74

This is my neighborhood Thai place. It's very good. Lots of options and unique dishes. Great starters selection too.

Diner Review №75

First time in my life I have been charged for fountain drink refills, and it mentions nothing of the sort on the menu. Not a pleasant surprise. Food was fine, but the surprise charges are not.

Diner Review №76

Food can be better. Staff were great though

Diner Review №77

The food here is great! They just don't know how to take instructions. Ordered a Tom Kha for to-go, No chili because I'm allergic-they put chili and did not put any to-go utensils. 2nd time ordered Larb to go-they again didn't give you to-go utensils. Lame!

I've tried many Thai restaurants in San Francisco and this is my favorite. One of my favorite of any city. Worth the trip to brave the sights and smells of Soma, or just order delivery through their website, because it's all about the food. I've never had a dish here I didn't love, and I've been coming here for years, and look forward to coming for many more!

An exceptional Thai dining experience in San Francisco! This restaurant offers the convenience of reservations, ensuring prompt seating upon arrival. While metered street parking might be challenging during peak hours, visiting during the evening proved hassle-free, with complimentary parking available.

Upon entering, the restaurant had a few vacant tables, yet the ambiance remained vibrant and inviting. Our meal consisted of the following dishes:

Pad Se-Ew - A personal favorite, the Pad Se-Ew here was truly outstanding! Bursting with flavor, it struck the perfect balance without being overly salty. I opted for pork, but any protein would pair well with this classic dish.
Gaeng Gari - A must-have for me at any Thai eatery, their yellow curry was utterly delectable! Served with half a chicken, some bones may be present, so exercise caution while savoring the dish.
I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment and eagerly anticipate my return!

Diner Review №97

The staff was so attentive, the food delicious, and the atmosphere was good. Low lighting, but not too low. Had a great time. Food and a drink is around 30.00 per person. My daughter is vegan and there were good options to choose from.

Diner Review №99

Nice surprise in the South of Market (Soma) area of San Francisco. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the food and the service are excellent. We had their chicken coconut soup (tom kha), chicken satay, Pad Se Ew (fat noodle), pad thai and jungle beef. All of them are delicious and perfectly cooked. Reasonable prices for the quality of the food and the service. Plenty of street parking.

Diner Review №111

The 1 star is for the service not food. The food is great. But I have never experienced such terrible and rude waitress. The very first sentence when she came to our table after 20 minutes we have seated there is “Are you all ready to order?”. I then asked her “why we have to be all ready to order?”. She then said “ because if you guys are not all ready, I will have to come back again.” I was very shocked. Although I have never intended to ask her to come multiple rounds but isn’t it a pretty common thing that the server have to come to a multiple times to either take order, refill the drink or ask if there is anything else you guys like to order?
This lady claimed she is the manager but I strongly doubt how she can get promoted. I really hope the owner of this restaurant can see this review and re-consider this!

Diner Review №112

tried their eggplant tofu and their green bean tofu.. also had their corn fritters and loved the dip that came with it
the staff was kind and receptive and the service was spectacular

Diner Review №113

The food here is hit or miss. Overall it's better than most places. That being said they need to remove the fried rice from the menu as it isn't fried at all. It's basically just white rice warmed and tossed. Uncle Roger would roast this place over the unfried rice. Maybe that's a better name for theirs, unfried rice.

This was hands down some of the BEST Thai food we have ever eaten. Our family of 9 (ages 4-18) likes to find unique restaurants to dine at while we’re on vacation. We stumbled upon Basil Thai and we all agreed that it was so unique, fresh and SO SO GOOD. The spicy basil chicken, fried chicken and green beans, and charcoal grilled hangar steak were some of our favorites. This place will NOT disappoint!

Best Thai flavors in SF for me -- other places may have more variety, but their dishes are always a near perfection of flavor... Great mojito too. //jp

Diner Review №155

Just go. Food: I’m not sure what they do to the spring rolls, but they are without a doubt the best spring rolls I’ve tasted. Crunchy, sweet and savory. Untraditionally served with lettuce, sprigs of mint and cilantro, and a delicious sauce I couldn’t help drizzling on the corn cakes. The greens and the vegetables cooked perfectly and not overdone. I recommend the Thai-phoon, a Thai iced tea cocktail with coconut milk that doesn’t taste very alcoholic. Service: Decent. Space: Trendy and spacious. The outside patio is unheated. The restaurant was only 20% full at 7:30, but filled out to about 50% by 8:30 pm.

Diner Review №156

Based on the reservation availability we thought it would not fill up, and boy were we wrong. Staff seems short staffed especially to handle large groups that seemed to regularly fill the place up. Feedback we’d share with the staff is if there are more than a handful of 4 top tables open and we ask for one and are a party of 2, it’s because we like to eat and not have a crowded table. Unfortunately that’s what set the mood for us and set the stage for everything so ordered less than our typical serving sizes. Over all the food was decent, but not enough to bring us back after we layer on the service.

Diner Review №157

Bland garlic seafood noodles for just under $18, a cup of hot tea for $3--this place is over-priced but service was excellent at the end of their lunch hour. The mango sticky rice was especially creamy--delicious, so $8 was ok there. There's better Thai in the city.

Diner Review №176

The food was good and the Covid restrictions that were set felt reassuring. My only minor wish was that there would be a little more portion servings on the plate. I just felt like the plate was bigger than the actual size of the serving. The amount of shrimp was fine maybe a little more noodles would be my only suggestion. Overall it's a nice place to visit when in the city.

Flavors were good, but service was either severely short staffed or fairly lackluster. The had several of our requests wrong ie wanted a dirty thai tea without the whipped cream but got a plain thai coffee. Wanted Thai spicy on everything but got no spice. Wanted extra basil on my pad kee mao but was in the curry. They ran out of wide flat noodles. There was no host stand so we walked in and were confused on the configuration of the room. No one greeted us.

I want to like this place... maybe one more try to see if it was just an off night.
