Informal restaurant serving Laotian & Thai dishes such as pho & stir-fries in cozy surroundings.
When you walk up to the door, the sign says prices have changed asked your server for prices. That should’ve been my first sign to run run run. Ice tea is listed on the menu as $2.00 dollars. We were charged $3.75. Pad Thai was bland. Tasted better with the peanut sauce and lime. Which usually always comes with Pad Thai. Please check out receipt.
Absolutely wonderful! The food was just amazing and the service was wonderful as well! I don’t remember our waiter’s name but he was great and explained everything about the food when we asked for his recommendations! We ordered based on his advice and we all loved our food! You should definitely try this place ASAP!
Had this place for the 1st. I went inside to place my takeout order. The service was 10/10. Probably the nicest service I’ve received in a while from a restaurant. Seemed like a mom and pop establishment. The food was absolutely delicious! My ONLY complaint is that there wasn’t enough curry sauce for the meal. Most Thai restaurants give it to you in a container with lid but they plated theirs in a regular takeout box. The portion size was great, I just have enough sauce for the meal. That spring sauce has to be homemade. I’ve NEVER had any better than theirs. Will be back but will ask for more curry sauce for the meal.
Review for Green Papaya
Two weeks ago, I dined at Green Papaya, hoping to enjoy authentic Thai flavors. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The dishes were excessively sweet, to the point where even the curry, a cornerstone of Thai cuisine, was overwhelmed by sugar. This imbalance completely overshadowed the authentic Thai taste we were expecting.
The portion sizes were surprisingly small, and my wife could barely eat 10% of her meal due to the overpowering sweetness. Despite the modest portions, the meal was unreasonably expensive. For two people, lunch came to $39.98, which felt excessive given the quality and quantity of the food.
Overall, the experience was far from satisfactory. While I had high hopes for this restaurant, I cannot recommend it to others seeking genuine Thai cuisine.
We recently visited Green Papaya Lao-Thai Cuisine and had a mixed experience. The Papaya Salad was authentic and flavorful, capturing the essence of Thai cuisine. However, we were surprised by a significant price discrepancy: the menu listed the salad at $9.95, but we were charged $16.99. Although a sign indicated potential price changes due to an upcoming menu update, this difference felt excessive, especially since similar concerns have been noted in reviews from months ago. Additionally, the Thai tea tasted unusual, almost if it had been expired.
While I appreciated the authentic flavor of the Papaya Salad, the outdated menu pricing and tea quality were disappointing. I hope the restaurant updates its menu soon to reflect accurate pricing and ensures consistent quality across all items.
One of the best restaurants in Montgomery. We have been coming here for years and are hooked on the flavors. From what I understand the flavors are more Laotian. The spicy fried rice (with chicken) is like nothing you’ve ever had 🤤 and the medium heat pad Thai is the absolute best.

This place is a (not so) hidden gem in town! It is, by far, my favorite for Lao-Thai food in the area! Friendly/attentive service, quality dishes, reasonable prices, generous portions, and all-around consistency! You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu! Please support this wonderful family-owned restaurant!
Food was mediocre. More like cheap
Chinese food than good quality Thai. The prices are 50% higher than the menu they give you and from looking at previous reviews, they have not updated the menu for at least a year. Very deceptive. There is a sign that says prices have changed, to ask wait staff. The pho, on the menu as $10 is $15. Service was terrible. The place was empty when we came for lunch, but the server was slow, drink was not refilled even once, my friends asked for a to go container for her pho and they brought a tiny container that was not going to fit what was left in her bowl then just left to not be seen for another 10 minutes. She then asked for a plastic bag for her food and they brought her a paper bag even though they have plastic bags. Do not recommend.
Great food but a lil high priced.
I'm a regular here for their selection of meals with excellent flavors and large portions. Don't be turned off by the price for a cup of soup! "Amazing" describes their wonton soup and chicken & rice soup, while "robust" describes their egg drop soup. My photos prove I've made a meal out of just those three soups!

Edit: I just lowered my rating. This place is no longer on my short list for eating out. The prices are just too high. The food is still good but it's like $20 for lunch these days. There are cheaper options in the area.
(old review)
I used to go a lot for lunch, back before covid. Be aware that their dishes are about 1 step hotter than other Thai places like Lek's. I like it hot at Lek's so I get it medium at GP.
Also the prices went up 2-3 dollars recently and it's not reflected online or in their menus. I wasn't expecting that, but update your menus already.
With most dishes they start you off with a little cup of chicken and rice soup. There's really not much to it but it's quite delicious.
I typically vacillate between three dishes, each of which are outstanding.
1. Masaman curry. Best anywhere around. If you've never had this before, you must try. It's a whole new level of amazing.
2. Spicy basil chicken. This is great if I'm feeling congested or whatever. The aromatics really cook you from the inside with love.
3. Pad Thai. About as good as the best I've had. There was a place in FL that had really good pad thai and it's about as good or better. You really can't go wrong. It comes with the noodles AND a ball of rice. If you feel the need to starch your shirt from the inside, mix the rice in with it.
Pretty big portions too. Most of the normies need to get a to-go box.
Tasty bites
Beware the prices! Menu does not have prices listed. Food is just average for price. Quick service but the sticker shock ruins the convenience.
Tom kha tastes like ketchup and does not contain coconut milk and the Thai style papaya salad at a 2/4 spiciness level is nearly inedible. Very expensive disappointment
Pricier than what I expected in Montgomery, especially having lived in DC for several years where I expect to spend a lot on take out for my family. I wanted to love the food but it made me and my spouse sick. Didn't seem to affect the kids but it could be that they didn't try everything we brought home.
Best Thai restaurant in the tri-county area. Prices are fair, and the curry is excellent. Every member of their staff that I've interacted with are absolutely top-notch. Try the panang curry
I didn't visit this restaurant. It is next door to the post office where I was going.
09 July 2024
The service was excellent and the food was good, but when I went to checkout I realized the owner still had her pictures of the Clintons and Obama up right behind the cashier. Its literally the first thing you see when you enter, and the last thing you see when you leave. It would be appropriate to show your political preferences in your home, but doing it at a business can alienate a large number of clientele. These pictures have been up for years and I've been patiently waiting for them to eventually take them down or at least put them in a dark hallway. Actions have consequences.
Waitress keep rushing us once she brought the food. Very expensive to eat here
If there is a 0 star, I will rate it as 0. Terrible food, and they increased price but not show the new price on the menu. Don’t come!
Delicious. I like to try several small things rather than a giant entree so I got Tom yum soup with shrimp, Chicken satay, and Thai dumplings. More than enough food. Wife got the pineapple rice. Too sweet for me but she liked it. Entrees are very large.
The GOAT. My favorite restaurant.
Great food and staff.
Be careful and NOT eating here. Not only the food is not right, but the PRICE! I understood a lot of food increased price, but they did in a reasonable range. Here they increase more than 25% price on all their food items. They made Pad Thai and Pad Se EW not Thai food at all, one is too sweet and the other too salty, wrong type of noodle were used for both dishes, and all left a huge pool of sauce at the bottom of the plates! Each plate cost about $20, and four thin chicken skewer cost $12. What a rip-off!
Amazing service but the food was no where near what we had expected. Pineapple crab fried rice was using imitation crab meat and pineapples was also like it was soaked in the can too long. Rice was soggy like it was cooked with too much water. Ricr was still in mushy clumps. Dumplings tasted like it was out of a microwave. Papaya salad was way too salty and watery. Over all food needs work ... way too overpriced for the main dishes . Other than food quality issues amazing staff they're not to blame owner needs to reflect on their quality of food .
Absolutely wonderful! The food was just amazing and the service was wonderful as well! I don’t remember our waiter’s name but he was great and explained everything about the food when we asked for his recommendations! We ordered based on his advice and we all loved our food! You should definitely try this place ASAP!
Love green papaya. Took my bestie here for his birthday lunch. Never disappointed!
I've been eating here since I was in high school and I'm currently 36 if that says anything about how good and consistent they are. Covid took some of the wait staff away but the food quality is still the same. Family run business with couple cooking in the back and son working the floor. Always love eating here and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu!
Food was awful. Too sweet to eat. Needed to wash my mouth to clean the taste
Service was great and the food was awesome.
Food is great and service is outstanding. Consistency is their attribute. Like everything, the prices are higher but the quality is still in place.
What a fantastic find! We've been trying food all over the South and have been disappointed or underwhelmed until today. Hysterical that it's Loa/Thai food. I would recommend this place to all who eat food...
The food was average, but what surprised me was the bill! I should have looked more closely at the menu. Our entrees (at lunchtime) off the menu were almost $18 each, and then with Thai tea, an appetizer, and two cups of soup, our bill was almost $92 for lunch. The food was fine, but for that much it should have been outstanding.
Busy little asian bistro tucked away inside shopping strip. Food is delicious and well worth the trip. It's definitely become a favorite place to dine!!
Still good!
One of the best restaurants in Montgomery. We have been coming here for years and are hooked on the flavors. From what I understand the flavors are more Laotian. The spicy fried rice (with chicken) is like nothing you’ve ever had 🤤 and the medium heat pad Thai is the absolute best.
Great food
Vastly different from the other Thai restaurants in town. Brings a much more authentic taste to the table. I can see why every table was full. Definitely worth the wait. Large portions and decently priced. Family setting perfectly acceptable for small children
Overpriced for what get.
Probably the most delicious pad prik keing I've ever had, and perfectly spicy too.
The place is old but clean. Food came out quick. The wait staff is also the owner. Very courteous, prompt and very friendly. Been coming here for over 15 years. The food is always excellent. The Pho is great. Kao pad (Thai fried rice) is our favorite.
Best Curry
My #1 lunch choice. Outstanding food. My favorites are Spicy Basil, Ginger, Panang Curry, and Thai Spaghetti. I get beef as my meat option. It's always tender and well seasoned. I opt for medium heat. Intimate setting. Friendly staff that remembers my name. They are prompt with walk in take out orders too. Every client is a priority. I love this place!
My favorite Thai cuisine restaurant in Montgomery. Everything is always fresh at The Green Papaya. The Basil rolls are outstanding. Shrimp Tom Kha soup is perfection attained. The flavors are truly unique, savory, and inviting. I hope to try every dish they make in time.
The Green Papaya hasn't changed its look since 1983, and that's fine by me.... because this is some of the best Thai food anywhere! You don't come here for the decor, you come here for the food! That delicious, spicy Thai and Laotian fare that you'll want again and again!
I love their curries, the Tom kha soup, and the Thai chili salad! Service is excellent....same friendly folks for years.
If you NEED your food very spicy, I am told that you need to ask for "Laos Hot" and then you'll be completely satisfied. Good luck with that because I like my mild spices just the way they are.
You'll love this place....and you'll wonder why you never knew it existed!
Everything is fantastic
It's my coworkers and my go-to place for lunch every Thursday! Looooove this place.
We went in for lunch, Oct 2. Each of us ordered the special. It was 20 bucks each with tea. They really need to put their prices in the menu or on the board. 20 bucks for lunch in Montgomery is too pricey
This was recommended by a co-worker and I couldn’t be more pleased! Food was DELICIOUS, and was still hot when I picked it up.
Healing soup for a cold!
The food is good but I don't like the fact that he hasn't updated his menu prices he charges what ever he feels like and it has been this way for a long time. I feel like he is taking advantage of people. Just make a menu with a fair price and I wouldn't have a problem paying.
Best papaya Laos style in the world. I travel all over the world and I always come home to eat the papaya salad here ❤️
The food was so good. The pho hit the point. The fried rice's also good. No one working in there looked asian but their food was better than some Asian restaurants in the country. The building was a bit old and hard to find. We had to look so hard and did a detour to get to it.
We had never eaten there, but wanted to try it… Our go to Thai restaurant is Ala Thai… But we thought let’s try that one. We walked in the front door nobody ever greeted us… We stood there for five minutes with a young man behind the cash register with two people. He was checking out never spoke to us never made eye contact so we continue waiting. Ended up waiting for at least five minutes without any acknowledgment of our presence we finally turned around and left. The man at the cash register never acknowledged the fact they just lost two customers for good.
Authentic Thai food with vegetarian and Keto options. Always full during lunch and dinner time. This should tell you that this small establishment is cooking up mouth watering and consistently delicious plates and bowls. Be sure to arrive early to get a table or order for pick. They give you the option of the lunch portion or regular. I always order the regular portion so that I have enough for dinner later. Full bodied flavor and you will leave satisfied. Everything on the menu is great. Greeted as you walk in and immediately seated. Not one but the host/hostess and waiti will take your drink order and it gets to you before you have time to get seated comfortably. The menu is very diverse and you can select from chicken, shrimp, beef, vegetable or tofu in any soup or dish. I always invite new co-workers or out of town guest to dine here with ne and it is always a place in which leaves them wanting to come back for more. Not to mention making a to-go order to take their mom something for supper. Try it... you will be hooked.
I use to like going here. Food use to be great. I notice they had a health score of 91. I didn't get a chance to read it. Got the Kao pad and the rice was very mushy then usual. Made me sick later on that night. Hopefully next visit maybe better if not it be my last time going.
Always great. Consistent top food quality and great service.
It was okay, atmosphere was old and dated
Some of the best Thai food I’ve had since Bangkok! This hidden gem is a local favorite! If you find yourself on Gunter this is a great lunch stop! I ordered a noodle dish with such spice and flavor that I forced myself not to finish otherwise I’d have been sick. It’s very reasonably priced and has a sizable seating area. The service is quick and friendly. The menu has a lot of option for those who want to try something new. I ordered the Pad See Eww and honest to goodness the best I’ve ever eaten! Photo included!
GREEN PAPAYA SO GOOD EVERY TIME I BEEN THERE THEY ALWAYS BEEN WELCOMING AND NICE AND FRIENDLY AND THE SERVICE WAS SUPER QUICK TOO WE WRRE IN AND OUT IN LIKE 30 KINS INCLUDING TALKING AND CHITCHATTING AND THE FOOD WAS INCREDIBLE THEY GOT THAT CLEAR SOUP WITH THE CHICKEN AND A BJT IF RICE IN THE BOTTOM AND THE CURRY WE GOT THE POTATO AND CASHEW ONE IT WAS INCREDIBLE I CAN'T WAIT TO MUNCH ON MY LEFTOVERS FOR THE NEXT 2 DAYS IT WAS A GREAT OVERALL EXPERIENCE ID GO AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT
Three problems with this place.
1. The food is extremely overpriced. There is a sign that says to ask a waiter for pricing since prices on the menu have all increased. $24 for pad see ew is ridiculous.
2. This is not thai food at all. I wanted pad see ew for the flat noodle pad see ew is know for. What I got was some concoction of pad thai noodles, random vegetables, and chicken. The combination didn't work.
3. Was the food fresh? No. More like fresh from the microwave. All the veggies were limp. The broccoli was brown, the baby corn was mushy. Definitely not cooked to order.
This place should be a Chinese take out and not a thai food restaurant.
Super friendly staff serving great tasting food! If your in the Montgomery, Alabama, area, stop by. You won't be sorry!
Service was fast the food was great. I can't wait to come back in town to have it again.
Sweet and Sour Chicken over rice. Food arrived in short An quiet amosphere , dress casual for lunch. Surely, one of the best Thai restaurants in the area.
It so good the food comes quickly in the drink taste good
Ate here 3/20/23. Great service, great food! I love that the portions are a great size. The Food was cooked to perfection. The mango on the stick rice was not as fresh. But the main course was immaculate. The Thai tea was 10/10! Amazing
My wife worked at a top notch Thai restaurant for a couple years. We've had Thai food from at least 10 other places over that i can remember. This was hands down the best Thai we've ever had!
Getting more expensive 😩
Pho rocks
Nice place with great food. Was a bit pricey but quantity of food is it goal.
We love this place. Always good food amd great service.
Great Thai food. The spicy fried rice or one or one of the stir-fry selections has always been fantastic and i add a little heat. Staff are always friendly and service is good.
We LOVE Green Papaya. We have consistently been going here for 9 years. And I have never had a bad experience
Quantity served is enough for 2 meals but its hard for me to ration myself sometimes. Food is great and the servers and owner definitely know me. Lol. Highly recommend this place and it doesn't matter what you order it's going to be great
Food was good
best thai in town.
Incredible food: great flavors, big portions, awesome service. Patrick is super helpful.
Our favorite place to dine out.
Very good and tasty I come at least once a week
First time stopping in the area and so glad we picked this place for dinner. Absolutely delicious, service was also amazing. We'll be back!
Food was mediocre 😕. The server neglected to inform us that the menu prices had increased. I ordered duck priced at $17 on the menu and was charged $22 on my check. When I questioned the manager he directed me to a hand written sign on the door stating that prices were increased due to increase supply costs. I told him the server should've informed us when he took our order OR print a sign in large letters stating that MENU PRICES HAVE INCREASED or print new.menus with the correct price. Needless to say I will NEVER dine here again. It's not about the $5 increase it's the manner in which it was handled.
No wait cause it's closed down
So worth it. Not a fine dining establishment but the food is so good
I've been coming to Green Papaya for years and every time it's phenomenal. This is hands down one of the best places to eat in town. There's a cozy and calm atmosphere inside, the staff is very helpful with understanding the dishes if you're not familiar with the food and of course everything is delicious. My favorite dishes are Amazing Lad Nah or beef Pho.
Always good. We love to eat here. Great spring rolls,
Outstanding! I had a rice noodle dish I can't pronounce, but it was absolutely amazing. The Thai Tea was really good. The service was a bit lacking, but it was one poor waiter who was doing great, but could've used some help. Will certainly be coming back.
Consistently good food!
Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp & Chicken add Spicy.
Really good food I am glad I found it again been years since I was there. Now I can't wait to go back. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Thai food.
I forgot what I ordered but I ordered it with shrimp. It was some kind of flat noodles only like 5 shrimp and paid 20$. I won't be going back.
Always great.
Excellent as always. We placed a large order(10 people) by phone for pick-up. Every order was correct and so delicious. Green Papaya never lets me down. Consistently perfect! The staff and owner are always a pleasure. I will always recommend GP to anyone looking for authentic Thai food. Highly recommend to vegetarians like me.
The best Thai food in the city!!!
Pad Thai is my favorite!
Consistent as all get out.
Delicious tofu curry! Amazing
Great food!!
God forbid I ever have to order a last meal, but if I do it will be Pad Woon Sen from Green Papaya. I get everyone I ever take there to try mine and they all say they will order it the next time they come.
I LARB this place! I had the blanket shrimp, chicken satay, and beef larb. Everything was good and the service was great. I asked for Thai hot for the beef larb and it was actually spicy compared to other restaurants, so make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Our waiter always refilled us and was awesome!
Great food & service.
My favorite Thai restaurant, great service and great food!
This is the best Thai food I’ve had in 20 years! Unbelievably fresh authentic dishes, perfectly prepared. Staff was courteous and service was prompt despite a number of people waiting. It was worth the wait. Do yourself a favor and seek out this gem.
Was not impressed. Food was okay. Rice was old. Some of the dishes were not traditional, as in wrong names on different dishes.
I got Pud Thai, Thai hot- it was delicious and it was extremely hot. I was very happy. It is a less sweet version just to warn you, but I liked it very much.
It’s always good when we go. Service is quick and it’s never too crowded.
Great food. Fast service. They have beer! Friendly staff! They have replaced AlaThai as our favorite. Sorry AlaThai. Still the best.
Great service..excellent food
Love the place!!!!!! Food and staff are great!
Still some of the best curry and noodle dishes I have ever had. This place is one of my staples for a good meal. Stop in whenever you are nearby and you won't regret it!
A family owned local business, The Green Papaya has been my favorite Laos/Thai cuisine in Montgomery. A little off the beaten path it's a must try for people who like this cultural cuisine and who can handle "Thai hot" however the do offer milder. My favorite is the Spicy Kao Pad. Inside is clean and nice even though the outside isn't nice on the eyes but that's often where you find the hidden gems. Last visit I tried the lunch special which was Garlic and Black pepper chicken with soup and a spring roll for 9.25. It was great!
The egg rolls are great.
The green papaya salad (Laotian-style) was amazing! We visited for lunch, and my expectations were blown out of the water. We also ordered the chicken satay and pad thai. Every bite was delicious! The staff was attentive and kind, and the food was better than I've had in major cities for a much higher price. It was clear from snippets of conversations I overheard from other tables that they have a strong local following. If you visit Montgomery and don't eat here, you will have missed a wonderful opportunity!
Love eating here! The meals are prepared very similarly to my mom's dishes (She is from Thailand). Friendly staff too!
Best Thai food in town. Pad woon sen is incredible and “Thai hot” is actually hot.
Best Thai in all of Montgomery... nor are their spice level.dummied down...Thai hot is really, Thai hot... so excellent 👏
The Green Papaya Salad is exceptional and definitely a functional food for good digestion.
First time here and the food and service was top notch. I will definitely visit again the next time I'm in Montgomery.
Great service and good food. Enjoyed it very much.
Always great
Very, very good food, in a very nice environment. I plan to visit again.
Not typical Thai food. You need to try it for yourself to see.
Good food.
Excellent food & service. Will be going back soon!
Food was delicious
Service excellent
The staff was very nice and friendly. But was very disappointed in the food. We ordered 2 chicken Pad Tai. For the price charged the portion size was very small, and had hardly any chicken in there. Was mostly a bunch of flavored noodles. Had high hopes, was very disappointed.
My boyfriend and I eat here once every week or so. The inside seating is nice, but we usually just call ahead and order food to-go. Our favorites are the spicy fried rice (it just has spices in it, you can get this kind made mild!) and their curries. They offer spice levels of mild, medium, hot, and Thai hot, and I promise, they WILL make it spicy for you! I also like their Thai tea here, and if you order during lunch time, soup is included with some of the meals. I highly recommend this place! We love it.
Great quality of cuisine style at a reasonable price, the quantity is more than decent as well.
