Authentic Issan-Thai food
We tried this place for the first time today and love it! We got the chicken pad Thais and it was delicious. The pad Thai had amazing flavor and was so saucy. The portions are also giant and definitely worth the price! Definitely the best I’ve tried around here. Our server was so polite and amazing, and the rest of the staff was so welcoming! This is our new Thai place for sure! I would highly recommend.
Was able to get a table and get our food out real quick, right before their dinner rush! We started with the fresh spring rolls appetizers with Chicken. They really put the fresh in fresh spring rolls; a good mix of different vegetables that were crunchy and paired well together. Wrapped up in rice paper with a nice touch of Thai basil and dipping sauce. The Gauy Taew Kau reminded me of a lighter version of phad thai, but still pretty good nonetheless. The Kao Mun Gai Tod came with a vinaigrette type dipping sauce that had grated ginger inside. The ginger being a component in that sauce was such a game changer!
Since I was in the area, decided to give it a try. First time going there and it didn't disappoint. Had walnut prawns, Pad Thai, pineapple curry and Thai iced tea. They were all great! Staff were friendly and attentive. Easy parking. Will definitely go back when in the area.
10/2024: Still great!!! Have been going regularly. Definitely recommend.
Loved this place. It's a very unassuming location. I hesitate to call it a hole in the wall but you could drive right past here without realizing how much good food they have to offer!
Some of the best crab Rangoon I've had. I also had a ginger chicken dish with jasmine yellow colored rice and it was also really good.
Prices are competitive with other restaurants in the area, unfortunately that means about $20 minimum for a decent meal.
I don't review many places I eat but this was a great experience. Highly recommend coming in the late afternoon, seemed to be less busy.
They specialize in food from the eastern part of Thailand. I ordered the “Tum Thad Dinner Tray” and it was delicious. It was a lot of food for one person. Papaya salad was on point. The spiciness was perfect; I ordered 4 out of 5 on the spicy level. The grilled chicken had the right herb and marination, the fragrant took me back to Thailand. The staff were very friendly. The restaurant was big, airy and clean. I highly recommend Ban Som Tum. I will definitely go back and will try other traditional Thai dishes.
Our family, from 3 different states, visited this lovely restaurant on Saturday night. We had a party of 9, and they were able to seat us quickly. We loved every entree. I wish I lived closer because I'd be a regular here for sure. No photos because we started eating it as soon as it got to the table.
The food and service never disappoints!!
Food was great and staff was really nice. Really good Thai food. Will definitely come back if I’m in the area
The food was OK. Nothing great or terrible. No dish wowed any of us for a return. Service was just ok as well. Guessing the heater was broken cause it was stone cold and the staff is bundled up with jackets and beanies.
Cocktails are delicious there.
Food is excellent, service is usually pretty quick. The shrimp spring rolls are VERY good. Little surprised to see them turn people away at after 830 on a Saturday night. I worked in the industry for many years, this is just bad business.
Other than that, pretty good!
*UPDATE*
Gotta take away a star....the Spring Rolls used to have 1 1/2 shrimp (they cut them in half) we got takeout lastnight and they got cheap and only put on 1....and these things are 12.50 FOR 3!!! They are good, but 4 bucks a roll...1 shrimp!? HARD pass
Wont be ordering these again , what a rip

Great place for large to-go orders of 15 people. Great tasting food and a very friendly, welcoming staff.
The BEST Thai place in Fed Way and the greater Tacoma area! It reminds me of the food I ate in Thailand

From the quick service, respectful waiters, the quality of the food, the taste, everything was great and the restaurant is so cozy and private, I absolutely love it. This place has to be one of my top favorites. It was my first time dining here and I already want to go back for another. 10/10!

tl;dr delicious food, fantastic service
I was having a rough day after working on my truck for 6 hours with barely any progress, but the folks here at Ban SomTum really picked me up
My waiter praised my excellent food choice (Jasmine tea, seafood boil of mussel, clam, prawn, shrimp, salmon, veggies, and mango sticky rice), and he said that everything I ordered was pretty much his favorite stuff. The old lady that brought the mango sticky rice said, "I cut you some extra mango ((:" and was very sweet. My waiter and I bonded a bit over our Asian heritage, and they were both very attentive to my water refills, checking in to ensure that everything was to my liking. He was very on top of clearing my dishes as I finished my courses, and offered me a couple boxes once I started slowing down.
I did not even realize that I showed up just 30mins before they were closing, and my waiter assured me that I don't need to rush myself (although I am naturally a scarfer that eats like a vacuum cleaner, so he probably thought I was intentionally trying to get out before closing)
All that food for just $36.88, of course I had to tip 35% to make it an even $50, I almost wish I tipped more. I still have leftovers which I shall enjoy tomorrow.
Thanks for making my rough day a bit better.
Top vegan ops! Papaya salad is 🔥
Excellent quality food, attentive service, reasonable price. Nice lunch menu!
Delicious food, Great service, Wings were great as well as Thai chili chicken
Best pad thai I’ve ever had! Absolutely delicious and they are very generous with their portion sizes (I’ll have be having leftovers for dinner for a few days now lol). They also had a fantastic deal on Uber eats (2 pad thai for the price of one). Also got the chicken satay and the black rice desert with custard and both were delicious as well! Next time I go I’ll be bringing my dad and trying their coconut curry. Highly recommend to anyone who loves Thai food!
I can't explain it. The food is just not Thai restaurant quality/taste. Restaurants cute and staff are friendly.
Best thai food in Federal Way.
Possibly the best Thai food I've ever had, made even better by the friendly staff and cozy atmosphere.
Get the trout larb!
The food is the best; we drive 20 minutes to pick up their take out food or to have dinner there. We have tried many other restaurants in the area, but we haven’t found any that are as good.
I've been going here for quite awhile now... I really love the food. The prices are very exceptable, service is GREAT!!!!!
Not my favorite but the food was okay and the staff very friendly. My steamed rice was "wet".
So good! Their spicy 5 is a true 5 unlike many places in town! Exquisite pain!
We got the Pad Thai, avocado curry fried rice and mango sticky rice. Everything was sooo good! The mango sticky rice is insanely delicious. Will definitely be back. Thanks Jack!!
Best Thai food around! Try the Avocado Green Curry with tofu - delicious!
Nestled off of 99 this quaint little restaurant serves up okay Thai food. Been to Thailand and know what great Thai food is this is okay. Bit on the pricey side great for romantic date though.
Great attentive service. We enjoyed our selections and will be back
Very good food. Great service. Nice and small and quaint. Definitely recommend if you like this kind of food.
Amazing!
The servers tonight were the absolute kindest! I had such an amazing experience here. Wonderful staff and delicious food!
Amazing food, great atmosphere, it’s a must visit.
Ban SomTum never disappoints. EVERYTIME I come here, the food I receive is a fresh, delicious, and hearty portion. So hot from the heat and the spice. This is the BEST Thai restaurant.
Service for a gratuity was not worth it. We waited 15min before anyone came up to us and the restaurant was not busy.
Throughout the entire time the servers never came up to us.
Food is not bad but the service is not good. Restaurant was not busy at all and no one would come up to our table, I had to come up and personally ask for items every time. On top of that a 20% gratuity was automatically added but the service was not provided. Would not recommend.
We are regulars here and every time, whether we dine in or order takeout, the food is delicious and the staff are super friendly. Very consistent quality and flavor. Love bringing our friends and visiting family here as well.
Loved this place. It's a very unassuming location. I hesitate to call it a hole in the wall but you could drive right past here without realizing how much good food they have to offer!

Got the massaman beef. It was super supper!
Noisy restaurant. All hard surfaces makes it echo-y. Food was good.
Everything great except they give you the tiniest bit of rice with their curry.
Love there tofu salad rolls.
The staff was great, the calamari was shockingly good and the braised beef was also really really good over rice. My only issue was the condition of the bathroom - if your bathroom is a dusty mess it makes me wonder how clean the kitchen is. Everything in the bathroom was either broke and or dusty… I LOVE the food here but it was hard to see the bathroom after eating there.
Yum!
Great spot, good food, customer service is usually good but sometimes a miss
Excellent food across the board. Prices are high, so it's not a great value, but the quality is worth it. Service was good, and food came out very quickly. The vegetarian options were very delicious. I highly suggest the crispy tofu dish.
Nice and comfy dining area. The food was really excellent. Service was also excellent and friendly.
If I could give them no stars I would orders noodles they were burnt to a crisp and order of yellow curry fried rice and it’s was soaked in oil I called them about my rice them made me a new one but with out protein like worst food don’t recommend
Have ordered three different times, and each time it tastes like it made by someone else. The 2nd time was amazing, but it’s always hit or miss. Annoying to get to the location, but there’s always parking and it’s nice, clean, and quiet inside.
Nice restaurant and bar. The staff are super helpful in making decisions. A wide variety of food for family style or small plates for a casual bite. I recommend the sticky rice and sausages. Cant go wrong with their bst fried rice or any noodles. The chicken wings, however, are a must have.

We love this place. Family establishment. Always great service and the crew does we’ll accommodating my family. Excellent Thai food. Fresh rolls, curries, soups all incredible. Give it a try
The atmosphere and service was very good… but my noodles were not sadly. I got a Pad Kee Mao with prawns 3 star (my typical order at Thai restaurants).
It was probably the worst I ever had, anywhere. Noodles weren’t soft and felt undercooked. The dish was not spicy at all, and generally lacking a lot of flavor.
This was my first time at this restaurant as I was just in the area. Maybe it was a new chef or something? Who knows.
Good food at a fair price and a good portion. The only downside is in and out to get to. It's not the restaurant's fault but still bad location.
It was my first time eating here, and it was wonderful! I wasn't sure what to expect because my wife picked the place, so I knew nothing about it. We pull up to a quaint, clean, and lovely place so I'm already liking it before we even get inside. Once inside, the staff was prompt and disarmingly friendly, very accommodating to first-timers like us. The spring rolls and wontons were fresh and delicious, and I had the sweet chili garlic chicken, which was great! We will be returning 😀
We were looking specifically for fresh spring rolls that contain Thai basil. My wife and I each ordered the fresh spring roll and the crab. We also asked for the dipping peanut sauce which is very complimentary for the spring rolls
The food was outstanding.
Just yummy
The Chicken Phad Thai was delicious! Staff were nice, and the place was clean and pleasant. Will be back!
This was some of the best Thai food we have ever had, hands down.
Bad service, focus on tip over 15%. First time is last time. Want get more tips.
This place is bigger than it looks with a super friendly staff and delicious food!
Food is always great. Service on the other hand can be lacking. Depends on who is your server.
Food was great as usual
Best soup ever and fresh rolls . The house dip was AMAZING
Verrrrrryyyyyy salty food.
I had my eyes on this restaurant for quite some time, so I was happy to finally take my partner to try it for the first time.
The restaurant itself is really well decorated and planned. The dining is nice and open with a good view of the kitchen as well as the bar. The bar, even though in full view is sectioned off and feels separate from the rest of the restaurant. The walls, flooring, and accent pieces are all very modern and appealing.
The staff were incredibly friendly. They were making jokes with us and clearly enjoyed being around each other as they were engaged in conversation with each other even while completing mundane tasks like sweeping or cleaning tables. We felt paid attention to as customers. They gave good recommendations for the food as well.
The restaurant was empty of many customers but they had PLENTY of mobile orders and take out.
The menu is one of the best menus I’ve seen before too. The menu used the actual names of the recipes instead of Americanized names and gave thorough descriptions of the dishes.
We ordered the spring rolls to start, which were huge! They came with chicken instead of shrimp, which was a change but it still was fresh and healthy.
I ordered a Thai tea and it was perfect! It was still nice and creamy and the ice did not water it down at all. I could tell it was actual brewed tea and not the powder flavoring. Plus I’m a sucker for drinks in mason jars, so extra points there.
My boyfriend ordered a rice dish and I ordered Panang Curry. The portions were huge (which the staff did warn us about). The food was light on the seasoning and was not spicy (heat-wise) at all.
I would recommend this restaurant to someone who is just starting to try new foods or as a chill place to hang out.
Excellent service and delicious food. We will be back!
Authentic Thai food! Ordered ☆☆☆☆☆+ level of spicy and still was a bit sweet. Other than that the food was delicious! For some reason, they have been getting my orders wrong lately. Make sure to check your takeout order before you leave.
👍Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, Green Curry Fried Rice, South Sea Fried Rice, Sai Krok Isaan, Pumpkin Curry, Tom Yum Soup, Som Tum Thai
👎Khao Soi, Jackfruit Salad
food taste not so good ,
Great food, fantastic service! I had the sweet chili crispy chicken on a bed of fried vermicelli noodles. Delish!
2023 Edit: This used to be the best place in Federal Way for Thai food. We have been coming here for more than 5 years and unfortunately I have to update this review because it isn't what it used to be anymore.
The pad Thai noodles used to be incredible with a really authentic tasting sauce that was tamarind heavy rather than the usual ketchup/flavorless pad Thai that is so common. Now it's just like all the other ketchupy pad thai and I don't order it. It also used to have amazing wok flavor that just isn't there anymore. I told them about this and they offered a free reorder saying that they thought it was because they ran out of the normal wider noodles, but the noodles aren't the problem. The flavor just isn't there anymore.
The curry is also very watery these days. I often order panang curry, but recently I have avoided it because they seem to be skimping on the coconut milk/cream that makes it nice and hearty, also very little veggies in the panang.
Finally it's impossible to get them to make a really spicy dish. Even if you ask for 5/5 stars or 6/5 it comes out not being all that spicy. This might not be an issue for some people, but for those who like spicy food it's somewhat of a let down.
It's really disappointing to have to update this review and I hope it gets seen so the owner can get the recipes back to how they used to be. Not sure if they lost a cook who did it differently or purposely changed the way they cook to cut costs, etc. Unfortunately, whatever the reason, we no longer eat here because it's just not special any more and it used to be a once a week addiction for us. Very sad.
5 years ago: Northern Thai recipes that are amazingly flavorful. You won't find any peanut sauce at this place, but you also don't need it. Pad Thai is the best in the area, no ketchup flavor here. Best Thai food we have found outside Seattle! Just go.
Ordered some Panang Curry. Came out looking like soup. Too watery
Oh my, where do I even begin. The food was all so delicious. The service was incredibly friendly, and I had been having a particularly rough day so it really made my day. It was my first time here and I ordered the Pa Laeng, and at the recommendation of the man who helped me, the Soop Nor Mai was substituted with the Som Tam. I’m a person who loves spicy food but often find myself disappointed with the spice at restaurants. It’s just never actually spicy to me. I’ve been to Thai restaurants and ordered dishes at the highest level of spice offered and it still just wasn’t very spicy. Here I ordered it as spicy as I could (super hot) and he asked me several times: “Are you sure?” And I confidently said yes. He even gave me a Thai tea to “cool you down” (which also made me smile). I can finally say I have found a restaurant that satisfies my craving for spice. It was exactly what I had hoped for. It left me with a runny nose and sweating. The perfect level of spice. The flavors were amazing all around, the portions are great, and it’s just delicious food overall. I would absolutely recommend this place to a friend and can’t wait to take them here.
Food is great! Many options with fish and chicken. Loved the crying tiger and the chicken fry. We have the different spice levels to choose from and 1 & 2 are easily manageable. 3 and 4 will be a bit spicy. Service can be better. Also a nice place for large groups as they have table arrangements for 12+.
The food was pretty average, nothing special but not bad. The service was pretty terrible. We went on a weekday and it wasn't busy at all but it took about 15 minutes for someone to come to the table and take our order. There were 2 waiters. The chairs are all upholstered and so dirty. After sitting down I noticed that my chair was all wet :( Would not come here again.
Friendliest staff I’ve ever met. I’ve had just about everything on the menu by this point and I’m amazed every time.
The Pad Thai is incredible, but I really recommend the crispy garlic chicken. One of the best meals I’ve ever had.
Great portions! Good food! Will likely come again
Incredible food at a value price! Customer service and speed is phenomenal. Our waitstaff was amazing and personable. I highly recommend this spot!
Food is solid and the service was not bad. I did order the lunch special (red curry with chicken) but it did not come with rice as shown in the menu and I was charged a separate fee (I believe just under $4 for a bowl). I don't mind paying for the rice, but the menu pretty clearly states that rice is included along with the kai jeao.
Consistently the best Thai food in the area.
非常好的服务,非常好的食物good!
Great place to eat Thai food 😋 very friendly staff
Incredible food and service with a pleasant atmosphere.
Service was amazing... but there are no prices on the menu 😕. The coconut prawns had mild coconut taste. The curry dish was uneventful. Hopefully, someone else might have a better experience.
A bit pricey.
Excellent food And a nice location As a standalone restaurant instead of a strip mall. Was able to enjoy good conversation and amazing
Great tasting food and quick service
My favorite Thai in Federal Way. They can cater to spice lovers and offer a 10 star option! Friendly staff and consistent, yummy food each time. Very generous portions too! They do close on time, make sure to get there an hour before closing if you wish to dine in.
Got take out this evening. I even added 15% tip even though I am not dining in. Asked for 3 star heat and the food is not spicy at all. Plus there is no flavor in our food. Feels like they forgot the sauce because I have been here before where I dined in and it was a lot better. I’m sure they just messed up, but it was very disappointing since I know they are better than this. I had to add my own fish sauce and spices to make it better...
Tasty, well prepared thai. Ordered the Kee Mao with chicken and enjoyed it.
Will return again!
Loved the food. Ambience was good. Service was fast. Ice cream could have been a little better but that doesn't negate rest of the things.
Been here enough to say this place is a 10/10 experience every single time. Amazing, friendly, attentive staff and consistently great food. Our go-to spot for Thai food. Highly recommend the fresh spring rolls with prawns as a refreshing, not-too-filling appetizer, Thai iced tea, and Green Avocado Curry (level 2 for mild spice, level 3 for a more noticeable kick (my preference)). Another favorite is the Pad Thai. Has not disappointed yet.
We have placed a couple online orders and the food is pretty good. We enjoy trying new items. Plus it's close to home.
Authentic that.
This was my first time eating there. He may have been the owner, I did not get his name but he was incredibly friendly and pointed out a few things on the menu. I had a dish that had coconut milk, chicken, green pepper, basil in a delicious sauce. I asked for a side of noodles to go in it.
The food was delicious, my only issue was it was very spicy (2). I do not do well with spicy food. In fact the few times I have gone to Thai restaurants I ask for no spice. In fact once I ordered the same dishes a Thai restaurant, asked for no spice and it was spicy to the point that I had a bloody nose while eating in the restaurant.
For five years I have stayed away from Thai restaurants. I made the decision this past week to try Thai food again. In spite of the spiciness of the dish ,. I still recommend this restaurant very highly. The food was delicious, made with fresh ingredients, good size portions, and excellent customer service.
Consistent great food. The owner is a delight and friendly. It’s located on Pacific Highway where you can only get there from one (southbound) direction. The food is so good consistently that the somewhat difficult way to get into their small parking lot is still worth it. Their menu has some of the typical Thai dishes but also some dishes not seen in your typical Thai restaurant. I believe it’s due to the style of Thai cuisine in a specific region in Thailand. I do enjoy this place and recommend it!
Unique dishes
Food was good but spicy!
Ban SomTum is my favorite Thai restaurant around and I appreciate the waiter who always comes by and says wassup in Tagalog. We usually dine in but we did take out for the first time, I can’t wait to get home and eat!
Bland food small portions
Had an awesome salad. Very fresh. Fast service
Good...
The waitress was awesome!
Oh trust me, I come here all the time. Every item on the menu is soo Good!! Omg thanks guys for always doing your best!!
The food was good. I’m not someone who ever leaves reviews. But one of the staff was really disrespectful, he started yelling at my family and I. I didn’t understand what he was saying to me as we were leaving. But I guess he was upset because of the tip. Told us he would refuse service next time. Never going back again. Hope this employee is not like that to other customers.
I love the food and the people here.
My favorite thai place! The "fresh rolls", as I call them (sao issan), with chicken, shrimp or tofu, and pad thai are the best that I've had outside of my trip to Bankok a few years ago. I'm a little more of a fan of sweetened fish sauce (nuao cham which is admittedly a vietnamese sauce), but their plum dipping sauce is spot on as I tend to eschew 'pedestrian' peanut sauces. Their Neur Yang is one of the best steaks I've had outside of Cuerno Bravo in Tacoma. Wonderful Tom Ka Ghai soup and don't forget sticky rice with mango for dessert.
Consistently delicious with great drinks and friendly service!
Great service and super clean. The only bummer is the food wasn’t like it used to be. We are so sad. It could be an off day or they could be short staff so we will be back for sure and will update this if needed! The Panang Curry was watered down and not as flavorful. The Pad See Ew had hardly any sauce and the noodles tasted a little undone while the beef tasted reheated. The Garlic Chicken wasn’t crispy like it used to be. Nothing seemed fresh. Both hubby and I were both so disappointed as this was our favorite Thai Spot on the South end. Hopefully this was an off day. More to come…
Excellent dining!! Good selection and service!!😊🐸
Just "Mmm" you should try it.... The lobster was excellent 😻
Excellent food. Excellent service. Will return. The location is a little difficult to get into parking lot.
Great food. Noodles are much better than some other restaurants
I wasn't impressed. I ordered tofu Phad Thai, while my friend ordered a curry bowl. The noodles were dry and rubbery, and the tofu was spongy. There were no mild, medium, or hot flavoring options; the meal was bland and unremarkable. I've eaten better Thai frozen dinners. The bill was $34 for two people who only ordered lunch with water, and I don't feel like the food or service was worth the price.
My Wife and I LOVE THIS SPOT - It feels like home :)
Amazing food , very good Thai tea and pad Thai . Servers were friendly and helped to customize vegetarian options
Food is ok but they must of changed the cook or owner. The food doesn't taste the same.
Great food! Super nice customer service!
This place has really great potential and kind of the only Thai place near this area worth eating. 3 stars because our favorite dish from this Thai place (pad Thai) has been inconsistently made over the last 2 years (flavors change). But also the only place near here (NE Tacoma) that doesn’t make fake tasting pad Thai. We’ve also have been treated poorly (by management I assume) because of a mistake they made. Either way, most days it’s a hit…
Great food! Great service!
The food is good, but the attitude of the staff is very poor. The way the staff approached for service was not welcoming and did not feel like eating there. Also my credit card was charged more than the bill amount + tip amount.
The food is very good but maybe they should change they’re hours it says it closes at 9:00 pm I got there and the guy told me it was only Togo at 8:05 pm?? On a Saturday! Seems like they don’t care for having more business
tip added in the food cost, so I have to pay double tip
Just had an aaaamazing dining experience on the Ruston Way waterfront in the Newly opened Tai food! The owner is so sweet as she came around and introduced herself. I highly recommend the Crispy Chicken and Red Curry entrees. I can’t wait to go back and order it again! Also, it would be wise to make a reservation. We were fortunate to be seated outside and had the wonderful view of the sound.
Excellent food. Great, friendly service. Stopped in around rush hour on a Thursday and it wasn't too busy. Very clean building.
Thai iced tea was so good, I had to have another to go after my meal. I got some pad kee mau for my entree, which was great. The noodles were cooked to PERFECTION! I have had plenty of mushy wide noodles, and these were definitely not mushy at all. Nice and firm. Plenty of veggies, plenty of chicken.
I stopped in mostly because it was rush hour and I was wanting to let the traffic die down and was craving some Thai, and I am glad I did. I will definitely be back.
Ordered the Crab Rangoon, Avocado Curry, Khi Mao. A teeny tiny serving of rice came with the curry. The food had no real flavor (how can that happen with Thai food?!), the noodles were underdone. We didn't finish, tossed the leftovers. Very sad.
The out of this place looked really nice so I thought hey ley8try it. I ordered the beef phat thai, Tom kha soup, naome stark dish and the grilled pork appetizer. All the food was nasty except for the steak dish. I ordered a 2 on the spice level and there wasn't a hint of pepper. This place is way over priced for the quality of the food. The spice levels are definitely gear towards white people. Would not go back
