Love this place. The owner Sunshine and her whole family are so sweet and welcoming and the food is always super fresh and delicious. This tofu kimchi fried rice is one of my favorite dishes but everything else I tried here was really good! Recommend 1000 times.

I came to Bonsai to order a couple of veggie rolls as I have dietary restrictions and those are a safe food for me. After being greeted, the lady asked me what I wanted, but the rolls I was looking for had ingredients that I was worried about, so she began asking what I could eat and while discussing a particular Japanese veggie, she brought her son (chef) to discuss what I wanted. They both took such amazing care of my worries and concerns and produced 4 unique rolls for me. I cannot thank them enough and have found my sushi spot in Kannapolis, NC! I can't wait till next week!

Such a cute and delicious spot! Our waiter was extremely kind and attentive. There were a ton of food options we couldn't get just one roll! Every sushi roll we had was great! Definitely recommend checking this spot out.

This place is amazing!! They have amazing food, great staff and a wonderful atmosphere. We went on their Karaoke night so the main dining area was not full at all. The food was delicious and I’m so glad we stumbled across the restaurant I would be coming back again for sure!!

The parking lot was packed when we arrived, but when we sat down, we saw only one table was seated. We could hear karaoke singing through the walls. Food was good, service was prompt. When we went to leave, the karaoke party let out and everyone queued up at the register. Also, what is up with no alcohol?? Interesting place!

Yeah this place was great. We shared sushi and udon noodles and both were excellent. Good atmosphere good food its all you need.

5 years ago this place was 5 stars.4 years ago, 4 stars and so on… Be sure you’re ready to order everything the first time you’re waited on. Otherwise, brace yourself for a long long stay. Food…eh.

Best Asian food, generally, in the Kannapolis/Concord area. Only thing I haven’t tried is their Japanese menu.

So I called in to place an order, first time, no sushi chef. So I called back and I was told to hold on. Then I waited, and waited and waited. After I was hung up on I tried 3 times to call back. So I decided to drive down there. While I was standing there, I called and watched the "server" hang up the phone. When I explained i was the one being treated like trash, the same girl on the phone offered no apologies and blamed it on me!!! Didn't want to do this review as the chef is great and the food is good. The "server" was horrible!! Don't try to call in takeout here unless you want to be treated like dirt!

Food is so hit and miss. Not consistent enough. The last few times it was disappointing. Ms Sunshine and her family are so sweet, but I think they have to much inconsistency in the back kitchen when others are doing the cooking.

Will change my review when you answer the phone lol, I have called 8-10 times in 30 minutes and no answer. Have actually been getting forwarded. Was looking forward to eating here but I can not order online or over the phone.

My meal was just okay. I had the Bulgogi, it seemed to be missing something and it was not very flavorful. My wife enjoyed her yellow curry and the California Roll was good.

We were first ones in when it opened at noon on a Saturday. I stupidly assumed lunch was being served as it was lunch time, but we were charged dinner prices which I did not realize till later, I left thinking the bill was higher than I anticipated. We did not receive an itemized bill when we paid, I asked for a bill and was told it would be emailed to me. We had already left by the time the email finally came (from Square) and I seen we were charged for dinner. I looked at the menu again on their website and nowhere did I see Saturday was dinner prices. In hindsight I should have asked at the register about the price seeming high so I could have discussed it not being disclosed lunch was really dinner. Just feels a bit shady to me. We won't bother returning. We will stick with our favorite Sabaidee. At least there it is disclosed lunch specials are only on weekdays.

Definitely a hidden gem here in Kannapolis. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Plays Kpop and Jpop music. Sushi, Pad Thai, and Udon noodles are great!

Got takeout. First time eating from there and was presently surprised. Little diamond in the rough. I've eaten a lot of sushi and will definitely be going back.

I'm not a sushi enjoyer, but the people in my life who are say the sushi here is very good. I can attest that it looks very aesthetic and fresh. I'm much more of a hibachi person, and while the food is good, it's definitely not the best for the money. There are some unique standouts, however, like the crab rangoon. They do theirs in a way I haven't had before (very large, bubbly fry, extra crunchy), and I very much like it. The atmosphere has always been quiet and pleasant, very calm and relaxing.

We had Red Curry, Sesame Chicken, Sushi, and Spring Rolls. It was all good. The curry is sold as a soup and it lives up to that description so if you are expecting a saucier curry, this isn't it.

Total garbage!!! The worst Asian food I ever had!!! Cold, flavorless, and had the nerve to give water as a sauce!!!

I don’t like leaving negative reviews but we were not happy at all with our dinner tonight. We tried Bonsai because the other Thai restaurants were closed Monday night. The wait was long as there were only three people running the restaurant. A woman that came out once (the owner and cook maybe?), a waitress and a sushi chef. We ordered Tom ka soup. It had no trace of lemongrass, but was full of onion, broccoli, cabbage and zucchini. I asked the sushi chef (because I didn’t see the waitress again until I paid for the meal up front) and he said it was Tom ka and did have lemongrass and coconut milk. It didn’t. But if it was their version of Tom ka, I would not recommend it. We also got a rainbow roll and we both agreed that food lion sushi is better.

Drove all the way over there, 25mins away, and they are tucked away deep in a nook and they were closed for lunch @ 2P. What a disappointment.

Definitely don't recommend for the price, I got a veggie plate, for $12 and it was mostly cabbage. Definitely better places to get Asian cuisine.

I've been multiple times every time they are on point!!! Love this place!! Eat in or take home. Best well flavored Asian sushi spots around we pick this place over Enoddle everytime!!! Worth the time money and your stomach will be very happy!!!

The food is fresh, flavorful and nicely presented. The service is excellent, the portions are plentiful.

There's two things we with were changed. One being the decor, it could be updated.

The other is the hours, it's only open until 8pm. Closed on Saturday and Sunday.

It's reasonably priced, and in our opinion, worth the visit.

Update Jan 2024: came back again and had the same dishes. Food was good. Service was fine. Price was good for lunch for a nice Thai dish.

Food was good. Service was ok, though maybe not quite what I would have expected as we were the only people in the restaurant. Drunken noodles quite good. Even mild was ok. I can't remember which curry my wife got but she loved it and the little I tried was tasty.

No sushi for lunch when we came, no problem. Crab Rangoon we're good. Price was decent given portion size and all. We wouldn't hesitate to come back if we ate looking for a meal in kannapolis. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path, don't let that deter you.

First time back in at least five years. Food was still really good. The atmosphere was perfect and the service was quick and the food was exactly what I was expecting it to be. You can never go wrong with Sunshine.

My first and last time eating here, sorry! I ordered takeout fried rice and sushi on a weekday during lunchtime. When I arrived to pick it up, I was the only customer, and started to feel uneasy about the sushi, since the restaurant was dimly lit and I didn’t see a sushi bar or prep area. Sure enough, when I got home, the sushi did not seem fresh at all, the seaweed was rubbery and breaking down. I only ate one piece and it was awful. The shrimp in the fried rice was not deveined, which I know some people don’t mind, but not what I prefer. Just mediocre at best for that dish. Feel like I wasted my money.

The menu food is awesome but where this place really shines is with Jeffrey and his incredible sushi. This guy is an artist, the best I've ever seen.

Orange chicken was very salty. Nothing orange about it. Sesame chicken nothing to brag about. Sorry just not going back here. 🤮

This is probably a 3.5, the staff was great. Appetizers were good. The sesame chicken and hibachi chicken were both good. The sushi was average.

There's absolutely nothing negative I can say about this place. The family that runs it is AMAZING. The service is STELLER. And the food is PHENOMENAL. I ❤️ Bonsai Kitchen!

All places in and around kannapolis cannot compare to this amazing find. Tastes so fresh and homeade unlike others of its kind. A little spendy for the quality but will take that over the other stuff we have found that tastes like it's been sitting out for hours. Can't wait to go back!

Food was ok.

I came for lunch on a weekday, and was surprised to find that my friend and I were the only people in the restaurant for our entire hour and a half lunch.

We ordered orange chicken and Pad Thai which were both just okay. The food would not draw me back, that’s for sure.

The service, however, was excellent and the atmosphere was nice and clean.

However, the soap in the bathroom was so watered down that it didn’t clean at all! This is a concern because how can the staff wash their hands properly without proper soap?

Great Food but incredibly sloooooow service.

My wife and I both came here for the Pho soup and it was absolutely incredible!! We will be back!

We discovered Bonsai when it was Sunshine’s in downtown Kannapolis. Sunshine said her main ingredient was “love” and that she blessed every dish. It was obvious then and that main ingredient is served to this day. This restaurant is a family favorite. Food is amazing. Sunshine used to prepare our food for us based on what we needed and she was never wrong. She would say, I bring you something special. And it always was.
Just my opinion but anything less than a 5 star review I just do not understand. I guess we all have off days?
Prices are very affordable. Skip the China Buffet up the street and drive towards the fire station. Sunshine’s is behind it.
They would have more stars if I could give them.

This was the best place I have gotten food from in a very long time. The lady at the register made sure my call in order was correct and double checked it for me. Absolutely, with out hesitation I’d say this is the best Asian food EVER. The sesame chicken was out of this world. My wife had a tofu dish and loved it. It just tasted like they take pride in there food. Tucked back behind foxfire till they move back downtown town. We left satisfied and full. Price was also very good. One Small thing I liked was I ordered a coke and got a can. I’m not a fan of fountain drinks. If I could give 10 stars I would.

Went today for lunch and we loved it! Crab Rangoons were delicious, best I've ever had. We ordered sushi and oh my god, it was AMAZING. Highly recommend the Double Trouble roll (Spider roll, Red Dragon roll and Snow white roll were all superb choices as well). Sushi was a bit on the higher price range but worth every penny. Inside of restaurant is very clean and gorgeously decorated, staff were kind and delivered excellent service. Can't wait to eat here again ❤️

This place is a hidden gem in Kannapolis. The food is cleanly made, and delicious.
The reason for 2 stars is this -
1.) Wait Staff - It becomes apparent after only a few visits that the wait staff are somehow either friends or family of the folks who own it and while they are nice, they are usually clueless when it comes to basic "waiting" skills. I.E. Keeping Drinks full, occasionally stopping by tables to see if they need anything, etc.
It amazes me that to run a restaurant, it seems your wait staff is comprised mostly of people who are probably working after school or on their "free" days....if you would hire 1 legitimately trained waiter/waitress...they could easily tend to the whole restaurant.
2.) The food and portion size is often inconsistent. Portion sizes are kind of small for what you pay for to be honest and sometimes if you get soup, it's like they fill the bowl up halfway. Inconsistency comes from the fact that if there are more than 3 tables seated at one time, food will be of an obviously lesser quality than if you went in and were the only ones there.
3.) The silence - the unbearable silence that allows someone on one side of the restaurant to hear the conversation you are having is just bad for the vibe of the whole joint, play some music or something please.

I say all of these things because this is really a nice little spot, and with a few changes, it could be great. As a Kannapolis resident, I would love for this place to continue to succeed but it will take more than just good food for this place to become any more than it is. I would encourage anyone who is a local to become a regular at this spot, but I would also encourage the owners to turn around and invest that into quality improvement changes to enhance the experience of your patrons...or just switch to "take out only".

Pho was amazing, Id go back just for the broth and a good conversation with Mrs. Sunshine. She knows her food.

Awesome Asian Fusion restaurant with Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese dishes. Lots of vegan and vegetarian options, sushi options, and most dishes you can decide which meat or protein you'd like. Definitely try this restaurant, it deserves a lot more business than it gets. Service is great, just remember you pay at the counter. Try the mango sticky rice for dessert!

Came here for dinner for the first time. Food was pretty decent. Would have been nice to have a sign up that says 'seat yourselves' instead of waiting at the door for 10mins realizing we could have seated ourselves. Appetizer came out than sushi came long before the other dishes from the kitchen. Service was pretty slow, $7 for a California roll is a bit on the pricey side. The waiter might have came over a total of 5 times, including bringing dishes and removing dishes. Got asked once if needed a refill after the drink was already gone.

Very very good spot. Still working my way around the menu but the Pineapple Fried Rice with chicken def hooked me. Have gotten the beef, it was a bit bland in my opinion. But this place is a gem because the food tastes fresh, like they cut the veggies right before they made your order, love that. Also the hours are a tad weird and it can be hard to get them on the phone to order ahead. Owner seems lovely. Photos are of the Cashew Nuts Stir-Fry.

Wasnt going to leave a review was told i would be credited for the sushi roll that had plastic still wrapped around the crab meat all the way down the roll and was nice to the guy and said stuff happens. Must be the low lighting in there. I almost swallowed some. My card was not credited. Grocery store has bigger sushi. If you think this is good sushi you havent had good sushi. Wifes pad thai was dry noodles no veggies. . My drunken noodles were pad thai noodles instead of wide noodles and it was dry also. They need to go somewhere and learn how to cook asian food.

By far the worst Thai food I’ve ever had. The spring rolls were terrible. Soggy and not cooked all the way through. Even the sauce for it was tan, not the usual you’d expect to receive. The pad see ew was not the correct noodles at all, barely any beef, no spice at ALL, zucchini and carrots in it which usually are not included in this dish. No flavor, no spice, just not what you’d expect when getting Thai food. The sushi was mainly rice, no flavor, presentation not appetizing at all. Chunks of what seems to be canned fish, not fresh fish in any way. Obvious by the texture, appearance, and lack of flavor. The hibachi was not good either. Not even oven warm. Was so excited to try this place, have driven by, gone in, loved the atmosphere so thought it would be a hidden gem. Absolute waste of money, time, gas, and wish I’d gone to McDonald’s instead- that’s how bad it was.

Drove by the location and it’s shut down. Phone calls go unanswered and website doesn’t exist.

Pretty decent sushi, took ~30 minutes to get it ordering at 5:30 on a Monday. I definitely could've used more ginger and wasabi for 2 full rolls (barely had enough for 1). The same nice family is still running it since the name and location change.

This is a lovely little restaurant hidden away from the main restaurant areas. This is a family owned and operated business with Sunshine as the owner. She is a very pleasant woman and will make your time there joyful. She is also the main cook. The interior is quite nice with an open and relaxed feel. You can watch sushi being prepped from the station or sit at your table. If you are choosing takeout or doing a Door Dash delivery there are some couches in the front that are comfortable. For those who like to eat Al Fresco [outside] there is outside dining space. The food is varied from Asain cultures and the Chai Tea is great. Besides listening to music as you wait there is a Pokemon Go gym in reach. The parking is very accessible on a quiet road and there is plenty of space for handicapped individuals in wheel chairs to have a seat at a table. Although I have never used it there is also a private room. Sunshine teaches cooking lessons here as well and is active in the community!

Jack of all trades, master of none. That's the best way I can describe this place. They serve Thai, Japanese and Chinese food. I asked if they had the common Chinese chicken broccoli dish and they confirmed they did. But what I received was a very soupy mix of chicken and veggies and it smelled and tasted nothing like the Chinese dish. It looked like a soup and tasted like a stew. Definitely would not come here again for Chinese food. They should stick to one type of food and master that.

The price isn't bad, but it's not good food. We ordered lunch so the dishes were only $7.50 each. The Orange chicken was very soggy and the portion wasn't the best. You can get a pretty similar quality in the frozen section at a grocery store, cheaper. I had the Green curry and it was very watery and to compensate for that they dyed the curry an unnatural green. Nothing like getting ready to bite into your chicken and thinking it has blue mold on it. But no, it's just the blue staining it from the dye.
Won't go there again.

Bonsai Kitchen is here now. Awesome sushi! Super nice people and great customer service. Their prices are reasonable and every time I've gone here I feel like I get my money's worth in good food and excellent service. The hibachi wasn't my favorite but it's still good. Honestly the star of this show is sushi. The shrimp tempura is amazing!

My son bought us dinner from here tonight. I had cashew chicken which was very good. The chicken was tender and the vegetables nice and crunchy. The sause was very good, spicy with flavor but not hot. It was all very good.

I love the Thai cousine especially topped with cilantro! Gives a great twist in flavor and is great. Been there several times and have not been let down.

Absolutely love this place! The interior design gives you a feel for the culture and the people are so hospital that they make you feel like family. The food and drinks are always fresh and full of flavor. Worth every penny!
