From the owner of Robata, Thom Chantharasy, comes a restaurant inspired by Laos and Thailand. Han Lao will serve lunch and dinner, with the former being counter-service and the latter traditional table service.
Han Lao recently opened in Brentwood, for our first visit we tried finger foods with sticky rice.
We tried the following:
Fried chicken skins
Lao sausage with jeow bong
Trio of jeow
Papaya salad (lao style)
Chicken Larb
Short ribs
Everything was delicious and packed with flavor in every bite, we recently relocated to MO and it was nice to find a Laotian restaurant as I had been following its build and waiting for it to open.
We ordered the papaya salad spicy and it was perfect! Gave me the head sweats and nose drip I was looking for.
I have been eating Lao food for over 25 years (I am not Asian) and I must say the recipes of the items we tried were spot on π.
Will be back to try many other items, keep up the good work and support local!

Good place to pick up a quick bite and also get Asian cooking ingredients and snacks. Donβt sleep on that onigiri! Iβve tried the salmon one, and itβs really delicious.
Was excited to find a new place and try out some Laotian cuisine. Unfortunately, this is no longer a restaurant. It is mainly a small grocery store with limited pre-made to-go options. Hopefully they're planning to bring these back.
Great Food! I'll return soon! Friends tell me you cannot get in and out within a 30 min lunch break, but you can order on line, pick up a meal and take it back to work. Portions are nice and large when you eat in-- maybe slightly smaller but still plenty when you take out.

Absolutely amazing food, there was a bit of a wait but it was totally worth it.
I LOVE curry, but I've mostly only had Thai curry. I decided to try Laotian Curry today and it was fantastic. I had the yellow curry with chicken. There was much less liquid than I had before with Thai; it was a slurry of chicken, potatoes, carrots, and curry sauce. I got it as spicy as they could make it (which I do not recommend unless you're as crazy about spicy foods as I am, it is certainly hot) and it hit the spot so well.
Also the staff was very friendly, the guy behind the counter was good-humored and genuine.
I go here often and there are so many options. They have some of the best sushi I have ever had, ramen bowls, and Thai food-like three restaurants in one! Also, I have a gluten allergy and they have complete knowledge of how to prepare food to accommodate. I highly recommend!!
This place had really good food when we visited. Was happy with service too.
Delicious! New portions are smaller but still filling. The new spice level is no joke! I asked for the highest which I've had easily no problem. Now it was a struggle. Be cautious.
Han Lao offers food that no other restaurant could ever produce. Truly an enjoyable and unique experience! I recommend this place to my friends all the time. 10/10 for excellent food and customer service
The taste is okay. Very small portion. Don't order the papaya salad unless you wanna be stuck on the toilet for the next 2 days. The spice level is unbearable even for a Laotian person.
Unbeatable prices and good food. Meals that you will commonly see for $11-$14 at many other restaurants are sold here at just under $9, but it tastes just as good as those more expensive places.
We come all the time. It's always delicious, very wonderful flavors, awesome ribs. Can always ask to make it spicy they supply heat only when you ask. Love the bubble tea, taro is my fav, beer, wine, & cocktails as well. Great place to eat!
Great food if you like spicy and crunchy!
Great food and service!
I ordered food, and said, no cilantro. It makes me feel so sick. Then both of my dish had cilantro in it. It was so strong. I felt sick. I told them again after i found them in my first dish. However, it was there again in second dish, and they didnβt even try to fix or re make it. You need to take care of this stuff. People with allergies can get into a big trouble.
Iβm active military and have been on the hunt for authentic Lao/Thai food around every duty station iβve been at. Iβm Laotian myself and I sure do miss my motherβs cooking.π’ I almost gave up when I was disappointed by another restaurant around the FLW area and decided to give this restaurant a try. The Larb Gai looked different from mamaβs, but it tasted just about the same !!! It was sooooo good, the 2 hour drive was worth it. My husband enjoyed his lard na & was hooked on the sausage, I wish it had more servings though. Great food overall, sap sap.π
Food was as expected. Restaurant was VERY cold. So cold my hot tea was cold in less than 5 minutes.
Absolutely love this place. The food was fantastic and is comprable to any great Thai place in town. They have a happy hour as well. I will be going back.
After 30 minutes waiting, I did not have confirmation of my online order in my email or spam folder. I called and they said my order was waiting for me. By the time I got there my sack was on the front counter, cold and soggy. I asked them to provide a fresh order as the delay was their fault. They refused but said theyβd warm it up, which I refused- can do that in my own kitchen. They tried the excuse that the confirmations go to spam folders sometimes.... knowing that, a reputable place would use text. I was raised in family restaurants....on the rare occasion the food was not satisfactory, we made a fresh meal... for free. We knew reputation is everything. I urge others to patronize one of the many other Thai restaurants in the area. Kathy K
email confirmation (I checked Sam folder) and I ca
Service was great. My wife and I tried an assortment of dishes. A few items (Larb Gai and Chicken Yellow Curry) were underwhelming. The Laos sausage with Jeow was fantastic. A good place for a light meal, we would be willing to return if we were passing through the area.
Some of the best soup Ive ever had!
I was so hopeful this would be a great Thai restaurant close to me. I love Pad Thai, ordered it once to go and it was very dry. Decided to give it a 2nd chance, told them the first one was dry, and they said they could add extra sauce. It was still dry, plus there were 3 very small shrimp, which were still partially raw! I had to cook them myself at home, and thankfully had some shrimp from Sam's that I also quickly cooked and added to my meal. Otherwise it would have been a pile of noodles with a little bit of chicken and 3 uncooked shrimp. Not only that, the staff barely spoke to me when I came in to pick up my order.
Delicious crab rangoon, and the pad thai was packed with flavor. The staff were very accommodating as well.
Had the pad Thai. Very very good!
Iβm certain I have never had a Thai meal this bad. The tapioca pearls in the bubble tea were hard and I was unable to chew them at all. We asked for no tofu in the pad Thai, and both orders were full of tofu and almost no chicken. My daughterβs order was very greasy. Service was painfully slow. The only thing I can compliment is the decor. We should have just driven to Thai kitchen.
Great food and atmosphere.
Love this place. I have been for lunch several times. Looks really casual from the outside but is lovely inside and the food is spectacular. We always have the crab rangoon, which is the best in town. Pad thai is excellent, curries are always great, but this week I had the Chicken Pad See Ew which was nothing short of AMAZING with #2 level spice. The noodles were like little pillows of joy and it was not sweet. I think this is one of the best asian places in town. And the service is always so pleasant!
Good Laoatian food, with a Thai twist
The highlight of this place was probably the good service and great modern feel to the restaurant. Unfortunately their dishes lack flavors and authenticity. I was excited to tryout this place since it's the first Lao restaurant in STL however they are still far from being good.
Spicy and yummy!
Great authentic Laotian food!
Yummy! Even my 4 yr old daughter tried the Lao sausage and enjoyed it. People were nice and food was good. Their curry is great too. I will come again. Ask the waiters for help. Sometimes you don't know what to order but they give good suggestions.
Had the braised short ribs, excellent paired with the sticky rice.
Good food. Good service. They cook the food infront of you.
Certainly one of the best Thai restaurants in the Saint Louis area. The food can be spicy but then this is authentic Thai.
Friendly service, great food and great conversation. Mellow atmosphere.
I want to try more of the menu, but every time I go I just end up ordering the Lao sausage with sticky rice and red curry. It's too good!
Got a to-go order of the Lao sausage and sticky rice, portions for the sausage pieces were very small considered that it was 5.95, would have liked almost double the amount Of sausage for that price. It was a subpar sausage, nothing special, and not savory enough. I am comparing it to Hmong sausage that Iβve had before in minnesota. Sad because this is the only Lao place around the the St. Louis area and I was disappointed. I might give other menu items a try, or venture out farther for good Lao food.
Easily some of the best Laotian food I've ever had. Good potions and friendly folks.
The chicken fried rice is delicious
Great place ,authentic and affordable!!
Loved the food!
I frequent the sister restaurant, Robata, in Maplewood and was excited when the owner told me about Han Lao opening. Han Lao lives up to the hype. I'm salivating just writing this review and recalling my meal. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu. Service is fast, the building is spotless and the food my date and I had was positively fantastic. I've never been to Laos, but after eating here I want to if for no other reason than to experience the food.
Not so great, silverware was filthy, service was ok, white rice was in a baggie, old and terribly disgusting. I didnβt touch it and I still had to pay for it!! Be careful of this place, itβs not all that great despite the positive reviews. Crispy ribs were good but the dirty silverware turned me off and couldnβt get out of there soon enough!
The food was wonderful
A very nice restaurant. A great place to try new dishes. Friendly and helpful servers.
Delicious food! Freshly prepared, amazing flavor. Dine-in experience is nice enough, but take-out is a good option, as well.
I've never had food quite like this. It was unique, interesting and tasty. And extremely affordable!
Wow this place is really good. Tried the spring rolls, yellow curry with beef and short ribs. I will definitely come here again, the food was amazing.
Very good, prices are reasonable, need to try.
The fried bread with the chicken noodles is good. The noodle bowl is only have a few chicken and a little house made noodles. The broth is taste good with fried garlic.
Excellent food! We had blue crab rangoon, Laotian sausage, Chicken pho, and pad thai!
Absolutely feel in love with lao cuisine it took my taste buds on a magical journey. I always forget what it is that I order I should probably take more photos to remember. But we were so hungry.
Delicious!! Friendly staff. Happy Hour is 11:00-6:00. What's not to like?!?!?!
I was surprised by how good the food was. Everything we ordered tasted amazing. The yellow curry was on point. The sticky rice with mango tasted rather authentic. And I especially recommend the sausage, which I donβt think you can find anywhere else. I donβt like sausage but this one was just so good. I also ordered Thai ice tea and I love it.( It is more like milk tea not pure ice tea.)
The chicken pho and fried calamari were good.
The food was good but the service was terrible. When we walked in no one greeted us and there was no sign telling us to find our own seat or wait to be seated. I ended up asking a fellow customer who told me I may want to make someone aware we were there. After locating someone they had to clean a table before we could be seated. We were brought sticky menus and ordered our food. Selection was okay but the menu seemed unorganized with the appetizers being mixed within the entrees. The food timing could have been better. We ordered a few appetizers, one was supposed to come with a side of sticky rice...the meat came right away...the rice came as we were almost finished with our entire meal. The server was unable to be attentive to our needs because she was the only server there with quite a few tables to tend to. Was my curry good? Yes. Was it good enough for me to return with the service lacking? No.
Authentic Laos food. Family owned & Operated everything is delicious
Good variety of food with some unique Laotian dishes not well known.
Excellent, tasty. Going back soon.
Was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food! The textures and flavors we're absolutely on point and the atmosphere was clean and modern. Definitely will be returning.
The food and boba tea was really good but they didn't have sippy cup, any highchair or booster seat for a child. The boba was half frozen or under prepared, and I never got the opportunity to tell the waitress because she never asked how everything was after the meal nor did she ask or anticipate that we would need anything extra for the child.
Great Food! I'll return soon! Friends tell me you cannot get in and out within a 30 min lunch break, but you can order on line, pick up a meal and take it back to work. Portions are nice and large when you eat in-- maybe slightly smaller but still plenty when you take out.
Great food, fantastic service, and bubble tea!
Amazing!! Exactly the spice I needed.
Had the Pad Thai. It was delicious.
The location is easy to find and there are plenty of parking. The restaurant has simple decoration and is clean. The food is delicious and unique. I love their short ribs and fries egg roll lettuce wraps. The shrimp red curry is a bit spicy.
Excellent food. Would definitely recommend.
I love Robata in Maplewood so i figured this would be in that realm of awesome! ..it's bigger & brighter on the interior but delivers the same caliber of high quality cuisine with a friendly staff. Everything was super tasty, looking forward to my next visit!
Amazing food at decent prices. The chef /owner from robata has done it again
Delicious and very reasonably priced food. Love the egg rolls , fried chicken skins, crab rangoon and Pad See Ew. Very tasty!
So good! I eat here a couple times a week! The red chicken curry is so good! The whole menu is awesome!
I've been here twice now, and I've loved each experience. I'd rate both the food and the service 5 stars all the way. Tip If you order soup get the fried bread!! Also they can make you a boozy boba pina colada !!!
Red curry is great. Will be back for more.
Good flavors! A good spin on the typical Thai fare you get elsewhere.
Truly fantastic Thai food. Same owner as Robata in Maplewood, another one of my favorite places. Everything I've had here is spot on. Crab Rangoon is very addictive, yellow curry is great, pad Thai is amazing. I just tried their bubble tea the other day and it's very jummy. And yes you can add spirits in them for a few $ more :)
Great staff!
Great food in a well designed space with very good drinks. Lao and thai that doesn't disappoint.
Must try Crispy Ribs! So good with A LOT of flavor. Also have great happy hour.
The food is really good. I'm always searching for a place that tastes like the food I ate while in Thailand and this is it! The jaew and sticky rice is great if you like spicy. We get pad see ew ell the time and this was one of my favorites because it actually had Chinese broccoli. And where else can you add rum to your taro milk tea!
Well-prepared food. Very clean restaurant.
The food and service are both phenomenal. I've had the short rib and the chicken pho so far, and both dishes were outstanding. The pricing is fair for the amount of food you get as well. Highly recommend this spot.
Ordered delivery here about 3 times and have been pleased with each order. Honestly, it is the best Thai-ish food I've had in the STL area. Particularly liked Khao Poon, Chicken Fried Rice, Crispy Ribs. Have not eaten in actual restaurant, so can't speak to service there. But definitely plan to order delivery in future.
Killer spot great food on menu went for lunch and they pumped my meal out so i didnt have to rush to eat it
Try the Pad See Ew! Delicious with a little kick to it.
Great food and service
So let me tell you about the most absolute nightmare of an anniversary ever. So i took my wife of ten years to han lao to celebrate and literally got to watch helplessly after she got the worst food poisoning ever and proceeded to projectile vomit all over the car and apartment in the proceeding 24 hours after eating there. When i called to speak with a manager i was dismissed with out so much as an apology by the owner. Instead of stars this place should come with a warning label.

Simply put the food is fresh and delicious, the service is fast and friendly. The surprisingly low cost makes this place perfect for a quick bite for lunch or dinner.
So far Ive had the pad Thai, crispy ribs, sticky rice, crab Rangoon, and fresh spring rolls. Everything has been amazing.
I also need to mention their takeout is top notch. I accidentally called to make an order 15 minutes before they opened and they still took my order and had it all prepared by time I got there.
I honestly canβt wait to go back again ASAP. The food was refreshing, flavorful, and not one flavor overwhelmed another. The price is nice for what you get. Itβs an open kitchen, which Iβm a giant fan of. The chef/owner was present and very attentive. Canβt wait to see what else this guy comes up with.
Overall the food is good, worthy trying and will come back again. However I don't know why but the food seems a little bit cold.
