Basil Babe
About Us

Basil Babe is a fast-casual counter service Thai family restaurant ran and operated by Eastern Michigan University alum, Haluthai, alongside her mother, Vasanna, the original owner of Siam Square in Ann Arbor. What originally started off as a pop-up, quickly grew into something neither of them could believe. With ongoing supporting from their community, Basil Babe is now officially a brick and mortar in their own hometown of Ypsilanti.

I’m a vegetarian. I ordered 2 orders of vegan dumplings and found out by biting into them that they filled the order with pork/ginger instead of tofu/red curry. I called to let them know and they said to call DoorDash. That’s it. Nothing about remaking the food or anything. Unacceptable.

Yummy! I had been meaning to try this place for a hot minute and now that I have it's easily one of my favorite restaurants. I love that it's not your standard sit down server experience, instead you order at the front, have a number assigned and your food brought to you by the super attentive and nice staff there. Most recently I had the masaman curry and the tofu red curry dumplings and both were so so tasty!! I also love that they have a small selection of non-alcoholic beers. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed!

Diner Review №5

Nice Thai restaurant with good ambiance. The best thing we tried here was the rice stir fry! The pad see ew was okay and the massaman curry was good but could be creamier. Overall had a good dinner here!

Diner Review №7

Flavours were good, especially the drunken noodles. They omitted the fish sauce as I’m vegetarian, which is a plus as many Thai restaurants mess this part up. Only complaint is the Massaman curry was too watery, I’ve been to Thailand and had this dish, it was always served in a thick sauce. Get this right and I would give 5 stars.

Diner Review №8

Excellent food and good service. Counter service that is quick and efficient.

Diner Review №9

You seat yourself, and a waiter will ask for your drink selection. You can look at a paper menu or use a QR code to look at it on your phone. Once you decide your food choices, you have to walk up to the hostess desk to place your order.

The service is VERY FAST. In less than 5 minutes my food was in front of me.

The dumplings were overcooked, but we loved the sauce. The other entrees were just mediocre. The fried pork was very overcooked in the garlic fried rice. The chili jam tasted solely like seafood juice, terrible.

1 being the worst and 10 best rating:
Chicken red curry dumpling 10/10
Drunken noodle 5/10
Chili jam stir fry 0/10
Garlic fried rice 6/10

It's also an old building and the door slams. We were in the back corner near a built-in glass shelf that RATTLED terrible every time someone came or left the restaurant. It sounded like it was going to break and collapse on our heads

The absolute BEST Thai food in the Ypsi area! Family owned, too! The rotating menu always keeps things fresh and interesting. Regularly the best dumplings I've ever had, and the papaya salad is to die for!

Idiot cashier rang us up wrong and instead of letting me pay the difference in cash they double charged my card. Now I have to wait for my money back

Fantastic and tasty plates. This is how Pad Thai should taste. Plenty of tables inside and it's counter service. Grab a menu (everything is great), place your order and enjoy.

The rice-to-protein ratio was insanely off. Our food was not at all worth the price. So disappointing! Stick to Tup Tim!

Diner Review №20

I ordered the Vegetable Pad Thai. It was unbelievable..10/10. The noodles, the veggies, the peanuts, and the sauce all were amazing. I ordered this through Door Dash and it came to my door still hot. I will definitely be ordering Basil Babe again. Absolutely delicious!!

It just was not good. It's been a long time since we have ordered food from anywhere, where there was not a single good item. I left the service and atmosphere at the default because we ordered out.

We ordered 2 Pad See Ew. 1 with medium spice and 1 with no spice. Both had no spice. The noodles were cooked folded together, so they were just these clumps where only the actual outside of the noodle was cooked. Most likely because they are using old noodles. Neither dish had any flavor at all and they tasted like raw noodles. The broccoli they added were just the stems that were rock hard.

We ordered glass noodles. The noodles were not cooked at all and the dish didn't taste like anything.

We also ordered a papaya salad. The papaya had this weird texture that was not normal in this dish. The size of the order was also embarrassingly small.

The only thing we actually ate was the sticky rice, which was fine, but everything else went into the garbage.

We try different Thai restaurants all the time and this one has to be taken off the list.

Best dumpling I've ever had in my life. The fried rice was decent, but just decent. I ordered with extra pork belly and a fried egg on top, but was still left a bit longing for a different dish. The restaurant was surprisingly noisy for the small amount of people – it was hard to have a conversation with the table. I'll have to go back and try some of the curries, as those look wonderful.

Excellent, authentic Thai food. Loved the Green Papaya Salad and Rangoon Crabby.

Diner Review №31

Beautiful place, the staff and food were wonderful!

Diner Review №32

this place is absolutely adorable and the service is excellent!! I decided to come here on a whim as I love Thai food, and I’d never heard of Basil Babe before. I’m so happy I went with it!

me and my friend got two appetizers, two entrees, a drink, and dessert. after tip, the total was around $67, which I think is pretty standard (I saw some people complaining that it was overpriced?!) and we both had leftovers after stuffing ourselves at the restaurant lol. my only complaint about the food is that I think it could use a bit more flavor, but the ingredients they used were fresh and everything was cooked quickly + it all came out super hot!

most importantly - our server, Audrey, went above and beyond to make our experience great. she was very attentive, kind, and sweet. I was looking to add more spice to my dish, but I was unsure what options they had. Audrey went to the kitchen to make a little cup of chili oil and it tasted amazing! it was exactly what I was looking for and I was so happy that she was able to figure out what I wanted - many thanks to her for being so patient with me lol!

overall I would definitely recommend visiting this place if you’ve got the time for it. the restaurant was also very clean and the other staff members seemed happy to be there. I hope to be back in town soon so I can visit again! :-)

Diner Review №33

Visited Basil Babe in Ypsilanti after seeing good reviews, and it was a decent experience overall. The ordering process is straightforward - you place your order at the counter, make the payment, and they provide you with a table number. The food is then brought to your table.

The ambiance is cozy with low lighting, and the service was quick and efficient. The place was clean and quiet, making it perfect for a peaceful meal and catching up with a friend. The menu is limited, but the overall quality was decent.

The food was a mix of hits and misses. The spring rolls and chicken red curry dumplings were flavorful and well-prepared, while the pineapple fried rice was a bit of a letdown, it was bland and could have used more seasoning. We initially wanted to try the mango sticky rice, but it wasn’t available as mangoes were out of season. The only dessert option was the coconut pandan pudding, which we ordered hesitantly, but it ended up being the highlight of the meal! Creamy, delicious, and a perfect ending.

A good spot if you’re in the area, though there’s room for improvement. Parking can be tricky since it’s street parking only, but we were lucky to find a spot nearby.

Diner Review №34

Finally a great Thai spot in this area!! So, so good! We got the curry rice, green curry, pad Thai and peanut sauce noodles. Will definitely be back.

Diner Review №36

My step daughter took us here last weekend. The set up is a little strange, because you have to order and pay before sitting down, which is normally only for carryout only or some buffet styled restaurants. Not a big deal but caused some back up in the entrance because we didn't know the menu so it took us a few minutes to order. Then we were seated and the restaurant appears clean and nice. They brought out our food and we enjoyed the variety of flavors and the presentation of each dish. My husband and I both ordered the vegetable stir fry with chicken added, and my stepdaughter ordered several different appetizers to share: spring rolls, crabragoon, dumplings of some kind, and coconut pudding. Sorry I don't remember all the names. Everything was fabulous. We had leftovers for another meal. We would definitely go again.

Diner Review №37

From the hype this place gets I expected much, much more. The prices far too high for somewhere without full traditional table service, and the food was absolutely forgettable.

edit: whoever answers these reviews needs a major retraining in customer service, I'm docking more stars. oh hey they don't learn!

Diner Review №38

This will become my new go-to spot. My table ordered multiple entrees and appetizers and everything was delicious! I highly recommend the dumplings.

Diner Review №39

Kind host, excellent chicken dumplings. Highly recommend!

Diner Review №40

Diner Review №41

I thought the food was very good here and I enjoyed this restaurant a lot. It was kind of a hip place and not a traditional Thai restaurant. The food was good and I didn't even see a person from Thailand in there. Is that strange? I'm not sure if the cooks in the back were Thai or not.

Diner Review №42

Always a hit. Fast and close to home.

Diner Review №43

Edit: The petulant owner put me on "blast" on instagram. Look at what you're supporting. Imagine how they treat your food. Should be ashamed of themself.

the most mid and overpriced Thai I ever had.

First off their drunken noodles aren't noodles for whatever reason they cut them to tiny squares to probably save money. They also cut up Thai chilli peppers and throw them all over the dish, issue is thai peppers have such thick and bitter skin so the dish wasn't enjoyable. Maybe they don't know how to make a proper spicy curry and that was their alternative?

Oh and their dishes all come with surcharges for any type of meat. Shouldn't that come with the ridiculous price already?

Their dumplings were overly fried and filled with nearly nothing so all you ate was fried dough and they're so tiny and cost $7.

Thai iced tea was all milk and cream and no tea. Not sure how they could possibly mess that up.

All in all way overpriced, tiny portions, bad tasting food. Thai food isn't expensive to make, nor is it hard. They somehow missed the mark on both

They even ask you to tip before you sit down so make sure to put a big fat 0.

Diner Review №44

Delicious pad Thai. I hope to try the chicken dumplings next time they have them. I have yet to try the tea but that’s on my list! The restaurant is clean and nice, staff is very friendly.

Diner Review №45

Basil Babe is a great option for Thai food. Whether you’re dining in or getting carry-out, there hasn’t been a single thing on the menu that I’ve tried that wasn’t delicious! When you enter, you are welcomed by their friendly staff and a great atmosphere. I have tried many things from the menu but basil babe has the best spring rolls and crab Rangoon’s around the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area (possibly the best spring rolls I’ve ever had). Their dishes are very flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. 10/10 and my favorite recommendation to friends and family in the area!

Diner Review №46

Last week (after too many months of IG lurking), I finally got around to checking out B.B.- and OMG!
This could be another happy review post, where I joke about being upset with myself for not checking them out sooner, except that I don't think I would change a thing.
I wanted some slightly indulgent comfort food on kind of an icky fall day (while stuck at work), and let me tell you, the pork belly and basil stir fry 1,000% hit the spot. Crunchy, moist, smoky, sweet, mild heat, perfect rice.
We also tried the crabby rangoons, which were nice and crunchy outside/ fresh and flavorful inside. The weekly featured dumplings were spicy pork and basil, and MAN, were they full of flavor! Again with the nice crispy exterior, and the lovely sweet chili sauce, but holy wow was the filing good. I swear I tasted apple and other fall flavors in there.
It was so good that we ordered again tonight, two nights later- the sweet/ spicy garlic Thai chicken wings, and the chili-jam stir fry with pork belly. Somehow, this is even better. The chicken wings?? STOP. My only feedback is that I wish I'd had one or two more of the chonkier wings with more meat on it- but that's just me being greedy.
There is something so irresistibly cheerful and comforting about Basil Babe, I can't help but somewhat selfishly wish them the very very greatest success.
10/10 will order again. Thank you. 😁

Absolutely love Basil Babe! The food is always delicious and service is quick and friendly. You can’t go here without trying the crabby rangoons!!

Diner Review №49

Diner Review №50

We love Basil Babe’s stir frys, crabby rangoons, and dumplings! However, for the OG stir fry I sometimes ask for “mild spice” and the spice is still significantly more than what I would qualify as mild, and I think I have an okay spice tolerance.

Diner Review №51

Solidly mid Thai Food. It's got the basic idea of how Thai food works, but did nothing to elevate it outside of monetize and brand it towards young 20 somethings who don't know any better.

Really expensive for the portions and quality, but I suppose that money is going into the decor and their "constantly changing" tiny menu.

EDIT: Apparently it's actually owned by a Thai family. I stand corrected. Editing the review to reflect my new understanding.

Oh. MY. God. There food is outrageously delicious. Kuddos to the mother daughter gig.

Diner Review №54

Hey, I’ve liked Thai Food. For a while, really. I ventured here and found it pretty nice.

Food: 🍮
For cook time, these came out very fast. My favorite item is the Mushie Mode Dumplings. 🥟 All of them were super flavorful! I enjoyed them to the point where I wanted more (Despite them giving you five 😅). It just had a crunchy spiciness that I loved.

I liked the Pork Belly & Basil Stir Fry, Too! Each bite left me feeling full. Since pork’s naturally salty, the chili sauce kinda balanced it out.
For me, the sauce is not super spicy (listed at Medium heat). However, if you worry about the spice, they give big glasses of water to pour from.

Service: 🥄
Today, there was 1 person + 1 chef (I think...?) For two people, they made sure everything went smoothly.

The turn around time was Quick. (Of course, this depends on the patron capacity). For around Noon, and for 1 person, that ordering-to-table process roughly felt like 7 minutes.

Later, a staff member checked in to see if people were content with the food. In general, the team felt really amiable.

Interior wise: It’s low lighting + clean. When I walked in, the room had a harsh moisture smell. (?) Yet after sitting, that scent faded fairly quickly. *shrug*

Overall: I enjoyed this place. 🌺 Basil Babe has some flavorful Thai food, + if you like Thai, I’d come here.

Great Food! Superb Vibes! Will definitely be back‼️

Diner Review №57

Unfortunately my fiancé took me to this restaurant based on a sticker she saw on a water bottle. The person with the water bottle told her the food was worth the drive from Detroit but we did not agree.
The tofu red curry dumplings were disappointing, and everything got progressively worse. Hardly any sauce on top, dry, and very little tofu filling. Did not notice pepper in any of them, just tofu, but they were mostly empty. Had some flavor but very subtle, and the balance was off. The fried shallot on top of the fried dumpling was a bit too much and something fresh to pair would have been better.
We got the Massaman Curry and it was immensely lacking flavor. My potatoes were so undercooked that the fork wouldn’t even poke through them. The tofu texture was nice but also no flavor whatsoever. Very bland, felt like eating a bowl of coconut milk with mostly peanuts floating in it.
The coconut pandan pudding was the least flavorful we’ve ever had by far. It was off compared to many others we have tried.
There’s a chance that other things on the menu have more flavor or maybe we’re just used to more flavorful thai food.

Diner Review №59

Quest for delicious, local Thai food continues, unfortunately. Was so hopeful that this would be it! But sad to say, no this is not it, far from it. The fried wings appetizer and mango dessert were just fine. The pad Thai didn't appear to be seasoned well - most of the meal was not eaten. Paid $30+ and had to look for another dinner option. Likely will not return.

Update 7-21-24: This is my go-to Thai restaurant in the area. It's always delicious! The coconut pandan curry dessert and mango coconut rice desserts are both phenomenal. OG basil stir fry is exceptional although I don't get it often because I like to change it up!

Had the green curry for lunch today and it was great. I had the Masaman curry previously and it was a bit sweet, so I was pleasantly surprised that my fave green curry is not too sweet and had a nice heat level to boot! Also love the OG stir fry. Will be back many, many times I'm sure!

Had a great experience at Basil Babe today, for my first visit. Service was extremely fast and friendly and the food was phenomenal. Their medium spice level is perfect. 11/10 would recommend. It’s so good and easy to dine in. Love they don’t have a wait staff, you just order at the host and they bring it to you. Makes everything come out so quick and easy for groups. I got the chicken and mixed veggies with the dumplings. My friends got the curry and both both loved. Will come back for sure!

My favorites are for sure the apps (I dream about the pork dumplings), I really like the spice level options too, everything was very fresh

I had tried this before and wasn’t very impressed but I’m glad I went back, it was very good. I got pad Thai, pork dumplings and the spring rolls (I wish I got the crab ragoons too because YUM) Person who took my order and the server who brought the meal was very kind and had great energy

I am hoping they will have online ordering soon for takeaway!

Diner Review №78

Stepping into Basil Babe was a decision I regret deeply. The nightmare began with the bizarre setup where I had to order at the counter, as if I were at a fast food joint rather than a Thai restaurant. This was just a prelude to the horrors that awaited.

The pad Thai was an unmitigated disaster, smothered in an obscene amount of tamarind sauce. It was so sour and sticky that it felt like I was eating a concoction of industrial glue mixed with lemon juice. The balance of flavors was so off, it was an insult to the very essence of Thai cuisine.

The drunken noodles were a different kind of catastrophe. Bland, lifeless, and utterly devoid of any flavor, they tasted like they had been boiled in plain water and served straight from the pot. No spice, no seasoning—just a sad, soggy pile of noodles that could have been served in a prison cafeteria.

The ambiance, while passable, did nothing to distract from the culinary horror show unfolding on my plate. Basil Babe is an affront to Thai food and a place I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. If you have any respect for your taste buds, avoid this place like the plague.

Diner Review №79

Stepping into Basil Babe was the biggest mistake of my dining life. This so-called Thai restaurant serves the most insipid, lifeless food imaginable. Each dish was an abomination—completely devoid of any flavor. The pad Thai was a slimy mess of overcooked noodles that could barely be classified as food. The curry? More like curry-flavored water. And the so-called "spicy" dishes were about as fiery as a glass of tap water. This place should just close nobody should go here.

In short, if you have taste buds and value them, stay far, far away from Basil Babe. It’s a bland nightmare served with a smile.

Diner Review №80

Some of the best food I’ve ever had in my life. Great staff, great experience. I wish I could eat there every day. I guess there isn’t anything stopping me except myself. Anyway, I love Basil Babe.

Diner Review №81

Diner Review №82

The crab rangoon here is absolutely perfection. I came here because I was in the mood for chicken pad thai. The pad thai wasn't bad but it's flavor was pretty dull.

The guys at the front were friendly and super attentive. They definitely made the place feel pretty welcoming.

The restaurant looked pretty clean and they had a place to sit if you were waiting on a to go order.

Diner Review №83

Diner Review №84

Stopped in over the weekend. The food was stellar. I had the pork belly basil stir fry with a wok fried egg. It was so good! The pork belly was plentiful and perfectly cooked.

Cilantro heads up: there is cilantro on some items, but it is clearly labeled on the menu.

Neurodivergent heads up: the lighting was lower and warm. Some booths have major air blowing on you. The floor feels sticky to walk on. Sound can be loud as ceilings are low.

Also as a weird note: the toilet in the women's room was not well secured to the floor and water seeped out from underneath it. Needs a new wax seal and bolts.

Also, the restrooms were both single stall, why are they gendered at all?

Diner Review №85

Food was great, but the customer service really makes this place. As soon as we came I felt like I was visiting relatives rather then going to a restaurant. I was with my mother who can be very particular about spice level, not too spicy or two flavorless. Our server Sandy (think that was her name, she had short hair) was great at suggesting the perfect dishes and checking in to make sure we loved them. 5 stars! Red curry dumplings were great too.

Diner Review №86

Diner Review №87

I’d give it 3.5 stars if I can give half star. I find this place just ok, but with limited Thai food options around the area, it’s considered pretty good.

4/5 Papaya salad - got medium spicy, and it was only just a hint of spiciness. Decent flavor, it’s my favorite of the meal.

2.5/5 Chicken wings - wings are on the small side. Pretty crispy. Flavor is a bit sweet for my liking, and tasted almost like orange chicken. Pretty americanized flavor.

3.5/5 Pork belly stir fry - the flavor is not bad, but the pork belly was totally over fried, very dry and hard.

Diner Review №88

Diner Review №103

A very relaxing and trendy atmosphere with absolutely delicious food. Plenty of seating options with low lighting and comfortable temp. Randomly stopped in while traveling and did not regret it. It was not super busy when we visited (around 2:30-3pm) but I could see it being loud with more people in the space.

The dishes were well cooked and the quality of the ingredients seemed high. We ordered Thai iced tea, pork belly stir fry, Massaman curry, and sticky mango rice for dessert.

The curry was mild spice and a good serving size for the price (expect added cost for protein.) The pork belly was a much smaller plate. The flavor was good but size was disappointing for the cost. The iced tea was good. The flavor of the sticky rice was enjoyable (love the sesame seeds) but the rice was far stiffer than I've had at other restaurants. The mango was ripe and flavorful though!

The menu is limited but features a good selection of options which we were told changes based on the season. You'll want to review the current menu beforehand as you have to order at the front desk before sitting down.

While a bit expensive, if you're in the area and up for a treat - I would recommend stopping in.

Diner Review №104

The address is what first caught my eye -- only one digit off from my phone's passcode. And -- get this -- I started a TV series that night, and one of the apartment (four-digit) door numbers in the show matched my address. Before that, I bought a cookie for 4.24. 4/24 is today; 4/24 is my birthday. Signs and wonders.

The food was better than I expected, and my expectations were fairly high. It was a nice night overall. My partner and I have been going through a lot of privileged problems and it's really brought us together. Sometimes, all you need is a problem. Something to focus on. A *real* distraction from nihilism. Although I have come to think of the pull toward nihilism as a kind of fear-driven mirage. Not cowardness, but a lack of a certain kind of courage. Maybe the word is Faith. My new friend told me the other day that she believes in Spinoza's version of determinism. I think that's a more actuate take. I turned 32 today, and I'm still not sure who is in control.

My main problem is they call a bunch of food vegetarian and it has fish sauce.

They say for some items it can be made vegan but saying vegetarian when there is fish is just not right.

That said ..

Service is wonderful. Smiling friendly attentive people always!😊

Food is good but for example the fried rice you have to add on everything and you end up spending a lot more money just to get enough.

I would go back just for the service and it's a nice restaurant.

I so badly wanted to love this place. Ann Arbor/Ypsi was really in need of a good new Thai restaurant. I was so excited when I heard another Thai restaurant had opened up. Finally made it into Basil Babe the other night, and it was pretty disappointing. The stir fry was very watery and bland, the curry was super sweet and also lacked any complexity or spice that comes with most Thai curries. The papaya salad was pretty good but a very small portion for the price. The interior was cozy but a bit dreary. The person I ordered from was super friendly and helpful. Hopefully they improve since they’re still on the newer side and maybe working out kinks. Maybe we give them another shot in a year or two.

I came with high hopes but food was such a huge disappointment! I was going to give the food truck basil babes from York yard a try and I wanted to like them so much… however this was the worst Thai restaurant I have ever dined at.
I possibly crossed about 10 better carry out Thai restaurant on my way here
-The dumplings are deep fried flavorless disappointment
-Pad Thai was a mush of noodles with dried pieces of flavorless chicken
- Massaman curry was diluted with hard pieces of potatoes , again found the same dried pieces of chicken from the pad Thai

The pork belly was ok

Service was fine and as expected in a joint like this.

First timers!
Authentic, delicious, homemade!
Great experience, great food , highly recommend. We will 💯% be back very soon

Diner Review №127

Delicious!! Everything we got was so good. I especially loved the dumpings

Diner Review №128

This is overhyped place with a very basic food quality and below average service.
We ordered takeout and one of the item was green curry. They usually give a side of white rice with it. However I asked for fried rice instead and was told there will be an up charge for the swap, which I am okay with. However, when I went to pick it up the guy at the counter carelessly said they could not make the fried rice so you’re getting white rice. WOW !!! IF you are lazy to make it then why offer it over the phone.

Now the food… which was way below our expectations. They should change the green curry name to GREEN PEAS SOUP.. it was very stale and lacked spices and flavors …

Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

EDIT TO REPLY TO THE OWNER

i hope you understand everyone can see and read your responses… if this is the demeanor you are keeping to serve your customers… i am sure you will be losing customers rapidly and i am saying this in a concerned manner.
About the soup, go and try curries in Bangkok Cuisine or Tuptim you will know how curries should be …
And please try to lose some of this arrogance … you are making yourself a laughing stock …

This is a fun spot with a healthy and delicious menu. It's unique, one of a kind, and you can tell the people that work at Basil Babe really love what they do. It's afordable too!

Diner Review №136

I've been coming to bb since they opened last year. It's absolutely worth the hype~

I'm sensitive to gluten, dairy, and tree nuts and can consistently eat here with no issues!
The staff is wonderful, friendly and informative. If you need something ~ just ask!
The music and atmosphere are lovely, especially the cute paintings hung all over the restaurant!
Many things are or can be made gluten free, vegetarian/vegan, no spice or as spicy as you can handle
Go for mild+ if you want a little spice without being overwhelming.
The papaya salad is insanely good. Ask for it with a scoop of the peanut sauce ;)
Try the rotating rainbow of curries, especially the red curry and masaman curry (the combo of peanuts and potatoes with the sauce is *chef kiss*)
Pad Thai is delicious with the mixed veggies and chicken
The mango sticky rice is phenomenal ~ little sweet, little salty, tangy mango, creamy coconut and nutty sesame seeds~what more could you want in a dessert?

Please go check out this cute, vibey ypsilanti gem 💎 🩷

Diner Review №137

The best! Every dish I've had is amazing everytime. The chili jam is probably my favorite but it's hard to choose! I also love the rotating menu. They have a great balance of changing things up while still consistently serving up go-to favorites. Even though you order at the front, the staff are incredible about regularly checking in at the table. We drink a lot of water and never have to wait for a refill.
We've done both carry out and eaten in several times and the food and service are 11/10 everytime. Wish I was eating BB right now!

Diner Review №138

I have been looking for a Thai spot that has the traditional dishes as well as a few I’ve not seen before. Everyone who works there is friendly and approachable. The food is dynamite! Especially the appetizer and dessert menu. If you try them out, I’d go for the dumplings (they are all delicious), and the mango sticky rice is something I wish I could make at home! It’s so good! Their glass noodles were excellent and even made good leftovers as well. Even when they were busy, they cleared my empty plates and offered me a to-go box, which I thought was very cool and thoughtful. I will be back for sure

Diner Review №139

I've gotten food here several times and it's always been delicious. I haven't dined in yet, but the staff are always very friendly when I've come in to grab my carryout. Definitely my favorite Thai place in the area!

Diner Review №140

The food tasted good but without lots of big plates choices. The Curry here is fluid added coconut milk. A warm little Thai restaurant.

Diner Review №141

Disappointed is an understatement. I really wanted to love this place, but it was no good. The food was such a let down. I ordered the drunken noodles, but they didn't have the wide noodles, so they gave me Pad Thai noodles. I ordered it spicy and it was not spicy at all and barely had any sauce and absolutely no flavor. I also ordered my dish with chicken. The chicken was completely bland and unseasoned (chicken pictured below) overall not good. I also don't like that they don't have servers here, you have to order at the front counter. I understand every business does things differently but we didn't have anyone check on us to see if we were enjoying our food. And they asked us to tip. My girlfriend ordered the Pad Thai, it was overall more flavorful than my dish but nothing stood out. The only saving grace were the appetizers, the crab rangoons were really good. Also tha Thai tea was good as well. We were served warm water. Atmosphere was cold and drab. Not very inviting or comfortable. We will not be back.

Nice little place in Ypsilanti. Plenty of seating and not a bunch of TVs which really don't belong in restaurants so "thanks for that"!

Service was fast and courteous, food was really nice and prices are average to low for the type and quality of food.

I would recommend this place to anyone who likes authentic Thai food.

We ate here the night of a snowstorm. It was nearly empty and the food came fast. The arches and sections of the dead restaurants before flashed with green light as power lines touched and we jumped in surprise. Dumplings are fantastic. Portion sizes are big so pick your meal with sharing in mind!

Diner Review №149

Easy to see why people rave about this place - I had the pork belly stirfry medium spice and it was a delight - great texture, flavors and spice level.

Spring rolls were awesome - pork dumplings were great - but the drizzled sauce really made them pop!!!!

Service was also really great - brought us a new ware caraf every time we emptied ours.

Will try to visit again!!!

Diner Review №151

Very welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Plenty of seating including tables and large booths. Service was fast and friendly. Ordering is simple and straightforward(baffled at how some reviews claim this is confusing) Love that they change their menu weekly. Our food was delicious! Highly recommend the OG Basil Stir Fry(Pad Kaprow) and the Pork Belly Basil Stir Fry(Pad Kaprow Moo Krob). The Papaya Salad is unusual but so good!! You must try this. Spring rolls and the sauce(!) were fantastic too. The spice levels were spot-on. Some have claimed the quantity of the food was subpar. That is ridiculous unless maybe you’re a linebacker. If high quality ingredients at a very reasonable price equals a more than ample plate of food, I’ll take that every time. That’s what you will get at Basil Babe. We will definitely be back-There are so many things I want to try! Highly recommend Basil Babe.

Diner Review №152

Crab Rangoon was amazing, but the rest of the food (Pad Thai and Drunken rice) were just ok. Food came out fast, but Drunken rice was slightly cold.

Diner Review №154

Went to get a meal, the food was overly sweet… like they poured a vat of molasses onto it. The staff kept hovering my table, which made me feel like they wanted me to leave. Every 5 minutes or so someone would come while I was eating to “check on me”. Taking into account it was 4 pm on a Tuesday and 3 tables out of probably 15 were occupied, including my own. Not entirely happy with the experience, and would not recommend this restaurant.

Diner Review №155

Wanted to check this place out, but there was no parking that didn’t require a meter and we had no cash or change. What a shame. Maybe next time.

Diner Review №156

We love this place! There are enough items that everyone can seemingly find something they like. I have yet to have something here I have not like. I particularly enjoy their yellow curry and crab rangoons.
The staff is always super welcoming and helpful!

Diner Review №157

This is a small, cozy restaurant with amazing food. I ordered stir fried pork belly and a thai iced tea. Staff was very friendly and efficient. Right after I seated they brought me the drink and just 5 minutes later I had my food. The pork belly dish was definitely excellent with lots of flavors.

Diner Review №158

This is my new favorite Thai restaurant. I ordered the OG basil stir fry and the Massaman curry, both of them were delicious. The stir fry was savory and well seasoned. The curry was delicious and bountiful. The atmosphere was cozy and modern. The service was prompt and friendly.

Diner Review №166

Top 5 spots in Ypsilanti / Ann Arbor. Fantastic food. Quickly made and consistently tasty. I like the green curry and satay gai.

Diner Review №167

The taste and spice were absolutely on point but the entree portion size left something to be desired. The appetizers had large portions though. I think this is the only Thai place where I could finish all my appetizers and the entree with no leftovers.

Diner Review №168

We love Basil Babe! The green curry is to die for!

Diner Review №169

I remember this place as the Tower Inn Pizza, then Mary's Hamburgers, now Basil Babes.
They did a great job transforming the place into a Thai restaurant. Check out the menu before you come in, so you can order right away if you're dining in. Orders are made ( and paid for) before you are seated. The water carafes on the tables let you know where you may seat yourself. The food came out quickly and tasted amazing. The spring rolls were fresh and tasty. The stir fried veggies with chicken was outstanding with the jasmine rice. My first time having Thai food was definitely a good one.

Diner Review №170

Love their food, service, ambience. Everything. If you can, try their pork belly and add a fried egg.

Diner Review №171

Diner Review №172

The food was exceptionally delicious. And the staff was very pleasant and helpful. The ordering was a little quirky you buy things at the entry counter and pay for them there and they bring the food to your table later. But overall it was a wonderful experience and I'm planning to go again soon with friends.

Diner Review №176

Nothing but authentic and delicious Thai food that comes from the heart of this family-owed business! Heat is easily adjusted by specifying while ordering (mild, mild+, medium, hot, etc.) and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly when assisting you in choosing the right option for you!

Diner Review №177

Delightful food, relaxed atmosphere. I had a Thai spicy pork belly stir fry, the heat level was decent and the flavor was fantastic. Good portions, nice atmosphere, affordable pricing overall as well.

Highly recommended overall, although if you're looking for something on a west coast thai spicy level you may have to bring your own chilis.

Edit: The crab rangoons as mentioned in other reviews are out of this world. Don't miss them.

Diner Review №178

For the good: this place has the best fried dumplings. Both the vegan mushroom and pork ginger ones have great texture and flavor. However, after trying 2 entrees, the OG Basil and Chili Jam, the meat lacks flavor. The shrimp was too shrimpy tasting to the point where it set off red flags in my brain and I couldn't swallow it. The chicken was dry and entirely devoid of seasoning. The OG Basil sauce is pretty solid but none of the flavor seeped into the chicken and it was too watery to properly coat the rice, leading to a soupy mess. The Chili Jam contains what I think is dehydrated shellfish which makes it very aromatic and flavorful but again too watery to get a lot with the rice. I would probably come back for the dumplings but I don't think I'll be trying a third entree.

I was afraid to try certain Thai restaurants in the Ann Arbor area because I am not a local. I am from Pontiac. I had a feeling that the Thai restaurants here aren't going to be as great because I have experienced certain Thai restaurants with bad reviews and food. But this location here isn't bad. I had ordered the Crabby Rangoons, and they were awesome! Light and tasty! My main dish I ordered the basil stir-fry minced pork and it was good!!!! The portion for mine was worth it.

When you first enter, they will want you to order and pay first before seating... I thought they only did this in Toledo, Ohio, when my last visit another restaurant but did not know restaurants in Ann Arbor do it too. Where I live at other restaurants doesn't do that, and I am surprised. This was new to me... but it was worth it. I would love to visit this place again whenever I travel nearby or have another vendors event to go to again.

Diner Review №194

I've been a loyal customer of Basil Babe since they first opened their doors, and each visit only reinforces why it's my go-to Thai restaurant in Ypsilanti.

The menu is a treasure trove of flavors, but my personal favorites are the Pork Belly Stir-Fry and the Massaman curry. The Pork Belly Stir-Fry boasts tender, succulent pork belly pieces cooked to perfection, and the Massaman is a delightful blend of rich, aromatic spices. I can't get enough of them!

What truly sets Basil Babe apart, though, is their dedication to listening to their customers. They not only serve incredible food but also create an inviting atmosphere that keeps me coming back. The vibes here are unmatched - it's a place where you can unwind and enjoy an unforgettable meal.

In all my visits, I've never experienced a miss. Basil Babe consistently delivers on taste, quality, and customer satisfaction. It's a must-visit for any food lover in Ypsilanti.

Went for the first time the other day with a friend, so good! Service was fast, atmosphere was friendly and chill. I got the curry noodles which was around $15 after adding shrimp, tasted amazing and very filling!
