If you're craving authentic Thai cuisine, this is the spot to visit. This family-owned restaurant, which I've been frequenting since 2003, is undeniably the best Thai food in town. Even though I've moved to California, I always make it a point to stop by A Thai Cafe in Portage, Kalamazoo, whenever I visit my college student at UM.
Vienna and her husband are dedicated to ensuring that every customer leaves completely satisfied with their meal. I particularly enjoy her Papaya salad, Massaman curry, Red curry, and the Tom Kha (coconut soup). The restaurant is clean and inviting, and the staff is polite and friendly.
I absolutely love this place!
Food was ok, some meals better than others, the curries were much better than noodles and fried rice. The colours were very odd looking, as you can see. Nothing special about the service either, the waitress did the bare minimum. Overall, would only recommend the curries! And beware Medium + is decent spicy! (Next time I would go lower, and I quite like spice)
I specifically asked for an authentic Thai Garlic entree. I got not even close to what I asked for. Very dissatisfied and will recommend not going. The photo with the white chicken and carrots is what I got. Doesn’t fast at all like garlic and vegetables are plain. No taste to it. The second photo is what I’ve previously ordered at a Thai restaurant. Will not be going again!!!!!
A Thai Cafe in Portage, MI, is a hidden gem! We tried the Curry Pad Thai, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were well-balanced, with just the right amount of spice, and the curry added a rich depth to the traditional Pad Thai. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the dish was generously portioned. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy, making it a great spot for a casual meal. If you're in the area and craving authentic Thai flavors, A Thai Cafe is definitely worth a visit!
first of all the actual restaurant is very cute, and is currently halloween decorated. our waiter was super nice and helpful. me and my partner had never been, and he was willing to answer any questions or give any recommendations. i wish i had cash because i would have left a fat cash tip, but the restaurant has a digital tip option too! which is very convenient. the food was amazing and the portion sizes were huge! i got the pad thai and it was very yummy.
The workers are amazing!!! They took my order even though they were close to closing. The food is so delicious here, and is worth the hype!
This is one great place and the people are very friendly! The food is authentic and taste great! Way to go Thai Café
We absolutely love this place! Food takes a bit to get out to you but it is ALWAYS hot and fresh! It is 100% a 10/10! The servers are always nice and I try to rave to everyone about this place!
if i could do 0 stars i would. i waited 2 hours for food that i never got. went in two times to see if it was ready for pickup, and i never even saw a worker in the front. went home after waiting an hour past my pick up time. tried to call to get the order cancelled and no one ever picked up.
The food was great as usual. Great service.
Favorite Thai restaurant in the Kalamazoo/Portage area! We try to order takeout from there at least twice a month! Always great food, friendly, and quick.
This was my first time here and I was very impressed. The food was delicious and the service was great!

I absolutely love this place!
A very good restaurant and I really enjoyed the Thai hot spice. Friendly staff, cool and serene environment, nice Thai cuisine.
There is ample parking lot there.
Excellent and authentic Thai food. The staff is friendly, efficient, and knows their options. I can't recommend this restaurant enough!
They are never open. I've tried going here 3 times and they were closed every time. Their hours on Google are wrong.
My favorite lunch place during my EV charging. 👍🏻
We got 2 orders of pad Thai and crab rangoons for over $40 and it definitely was not worth it! The pad Thai has absolutely no flavor and the rangoons taste like they came out of the freezer section and were microwaved. So disappointing for the money we spent and how excited we were to try this place!

Some of the most flavorful Pad Thai I've ever had, and their boba tea is delicious!
Very good Thai food!! The waitress was very nice and explained items, my family is vegetarian and they had a lot of vegetarian dishes.
They always forget extra peanut sauce even when it is paid for
Got the dinner size chicken pad Thai it was very good and a generous proportion clean environment highly recommend this place friendly service!
Fantastic service, excellent food.
This was seriously the best food I've had in years. I will be a frequent diner.
New York, London, Bangkok- are these the cities to go to for excellent Thai food - NOPE. Right here in Portage Michigan you can get the best at A Thai Cafe and the second best in Kalamazoo-at Bangkok Flavor. I don’t know how they do it but each dish is like a dessert of flavors. My two favorites are Peanut curry noodle with chicken and Bangkok fried rice with beef. Tell me, how do you make the fried rice? No one makes it like you do.
I attached a photo but already had a serving.
I could eat here once a week and be happy for a loooonnnngggg time.
Update- quite busy tonight. 😃👍
Have not run across anything on the menu that is not amazing!!!
Great food and friendly staff.
Got the pad thai with shrimp, the shrimp was VERY overcooked, and there were 5. Otherwise it was very good, just wish the shrimp was a little better.
We tried this place for the first time. Cute and clean atmosphere. Service was excellent. We ordered the Cucumber Salad which was absolutely wonderful and Drunken noodles. I agree with other comments the color of the noodles was off for sure. We ordered no spice and it was made to our preference. The plate was mediocre I wouldn’t order it again, it just wasn’t great for the price. I wouldn’t rule this place out and will give it another try by ordering something else next time.
Ordered no spice level. Dish was very spicy. I've been here before and have ordered the same dishes before, ordered with no spice, and they were not spicy. I ordered to share with my toddler. Asked for noodles on the side for replacement. Nobody cared my son had no food for dinner. I am so disappointed. I paid 60$ for my family to eat. I can handle heat, so for me to notice the dish was spicy, there was a considerable spice level. I've taken the one chip challenge. I was charged for the replacement noodles for my toddler. 6 dolllars. Had to ask for the noodles also upon leaving, like I wasn't going to get them. I just feel like nobody cared about if my son got fed. He is 1.5 and eats so many good foods and has eaten here before with no problem.
Because of the restaurant being smaller and private they tend to shut down a lot. Other than that, they have raised their prices significantly. That’s due to workers needing a better wage, and market inflation period. The food quality typically never lets me down. I feel like there’s only a handful of times it’s been not that great, but still not gross. If you want to spend less, buy lunch for 11 bucks(depends on what h buy and tho e protein ofc), or buy on a Wednesday! They typically have online deals.
first of all the actual restaurant is very cute, and is currently halloween decorated. our waiter was super nice and helpful. me and my partner had never been, and he was willing to answer any questions or give any recommendations. i wish i had cash because i would have left a fat cash tip, but the restaurant has a digital tip option too! which is very convenient. the food was amazing and the portion sizes were huge! i got the pad thai and it was very yummy.
I have been going to this restaurant for the past four years or more at least once per month and today I was very disappointed with the owner/manager decision. The young man who took my order was very polite and nice. The situation arise from a coupon I had for 10%. Neither I or the young man noticed that the coupon was expired so he gave me the 10% off. He took the coupon to his boss and she told him the coupon was expired and he needed to collect the 10% back which he gave me. He called me to the counter and informed me of the situation so I asked him what’s the difference and he said $0.78. I just paid $17.76 for my meal and been visiting this establishment for over 4 years including her family other restaurant in battle creek near the Airport and the one in Richland that is now closed. I can’t believed someone is that greedy over $0.78. Needles to say I won’t be going back there and good luck with the $0.78
The food taste is so bad. Not coming back again.
I have ordered for the second time here, and both times my experience was bad,Worst Thai food I have tasted. They should change their chef.
Delicious food and great service. Would definitely return again!
Walked up and carried out. Received fresh spring rolls and the Red Curry Chicken and rice was still hot when I got home. $25 before tip so a little on the pricey side for 1 person. However food was good and fresh and the girl (summing owner’s daughter) was very friendly quite knowledgeable and really helpful. I have one recommendation for the restaurant: use wax paper rather then foil for the spring rolls. They are very sticky and difficult to peal off the foil
I had the green curry. It was delicious, and the staff was friendly
I don't have a lot of experience with Thai food, but I ordered the Peanut Curry ("Hot" spice level) for lunch takeout and I'm hooked! Would love to try some other menu selections, but this dish was so perfect in so many ways. I may never order anything different again:) I love spicy foods and love that the menu has so many levels of "heat" to choose from. Not sure if I could go beyond "hot" or "xhot" though:) Food was ready super fast & piping hot when I arrived back to work. Both the restaurant and the peanut curry are up there now w/ my faves!
One of my favorite places for takeout! My go-to order is Tofu Pad Thai or Peanut Curry Noodle, with spice “mild” or “mild plus.”
They seem to usually post announcements about any changes in open days/times on their Facebook.
A very clean place and nicely spaced out for seating. The food was not quite Thai taste. The Pad Thai (spicy) looked and tasted like spicy Mac and Cheese.
The soup that come free with the order looked like gelatined water with red sweet and sour flavors, the Penang curry tasted artificial flavored with carrots that is under cooked, they were hard and under cooked. My husband had TomKah with noodles, that tatsed good.
When are they open, they are closed at 1.30 pm, you come at 8.30pm for dinner they say kitchen is closed. It used to be a good place.
A Thai Cafe has become one of my favorite restaurants. Between 11:30-12:45 today, two of us enjoyed fresh Summer Rolls with yummy Peanut Sauce, Tom Yum soup, Fusion Noodles (Mild+) dinner, Bangkok Fried Rice with veggies (Medium) dinner, both heaped on large lovely curved dinner plates, and with very good service by two employees. Plus, we have enough leftovers for two more sittings, yay. With quality food and service, at reasonable prices, I don’t mind glimpsing Sam’s Club parking lot.
It’s literally first time here. Place so expensive and she don’t know how to explain the menu. I tried ordering pho but they didn’t have it and she recommended me Tom kha cause supposedly similar to it but how is it similar, no noodles or other things? It’s just season soap with 4/5 shrimp. Literally doesn’t full anyone. My kids was waiting for the noodles the whole time. I literally said my kids likes eating soap with noodles that’s why I wanted the pho don’t recommend stuff if u don’t know either. & I said crispy chicken think it’s like fried chicken or some , came out look like sour chicken tf and boba just a waste of money. I feel like played out literally. The only food that came out good probably fried rice and curry but so little of the meat. Just paying so much for such a little amount of food. I was ready to go off my whole vibe just bad just seeing things I order that I wasn’t looking forward for smh. but I didn’t wanna ruin my bbg birthday and show how crazy their mama could be in public so I hold my posture's.
Still the best Thai food in Kalamazoo hands down.
Tastes good.
Not sure what one customer was upset about, but my first visit to this beautiful restaurant set my stress down and outside the door. Boba teas and Thai spice options for their dishes made me feel at home. Will definitely come back when they have Pho available. Gluten free options, vegetarian and vegan options upon request.
Favorite place for Asian food
The food here is always hot and delicious! Love the Fried Rice without meat, Cashew Stir-Fry with Tofu, Massaman Curry Chicken, and Spring Rolls. Mild and Mild+ is just right. The flavors of sauces are the best!
Bangin. Don't miss out. Stopped in and the food is delicious. Didn't try the curry but saw some and it smelled amazing. Had the Pad Thai and it's as good as any I've ever had.
amazing food, however their spice level system is very inconsistent.
my biggest problem is that they always seem to be closed for some reason or another. i understand that the ventilation system is not working properly right now, so i’m glad they’re keeping their employees safe. but i’ve lived in kalamazoo for 15+ years and i’ve never seen a restaurant closed so often for so many random reasons. as a restaurant server, idk how they keep any staff with how often they close indefinitely. get it together.
the owner also left a rude response to a different review about how often they’re closed as well, which is not a good look.
Never open
Served everone who came in afterwards first then approached tables
The food is great, every dish I've had has been full of flavor. I really like that you can choose your spice level, it helps when bringing non-spice fiends for dinner. Seems like they've been understaffed in the past, but that's changed recently. Overall a great Thai place.
Spice and flavor wonderfully balanced! Friendly and fast service. Very welcoming 👌
Food was ok, some meals better than others, the curries were much better than noodles and fried rice. The colours were very odd looking, as you can see. Nothing special about the service either, the waitress did the bare minimum. Overall, would only recommend the curries! And beware Medium + is decent spicy! Thank you for caring about your customers, and for the consistently amazing food.
Best peanut noodles ever. I wish they had more hours tho
Way overpriced. You can get the same meals in California for 30-50% less money. Why does Kalamazoo county restaurants drive up prices?
Never again…
Got Thai Tea with Boba for frocking $10
A beverage for 10bucks ?!
No sugar added idk why
I know there is inflation but it doesn’t justify this kind of price 10 bucks for a Boba Tea
Plenty of other places serves same even better food for Better price.
$10 for a Boba tea large ?!
Food was great, service was helpful and available.
Best Thai food I’ve eaten in the US, simply delicious.
Back again, nice to finally eat inside. Still the best Thai curry in the US.
It's always a bit cold in the dining room. The staffing is too light but really friendly. The food is consistently excellent.
The food is usually pretty good, but every few visits we get veggies in our dishes that are practically raw instead of cooked thoroughly. This has happened many times. Their employees are busy and work hard, but they need more people for things to run smoothly for everyone.
Food alone this is 4 stars. Service is very slow and my impression was understaffed for a Saturday night. Had to request being served, taking our order, and getting the check in the end. Maybe we just caught them on an off night, but I would only get take out from here. The food is fantastic! Had the chicken special and spring rolls. Both great dishes.
I got taken by for a fool at this place. Out of town, working in Kzoo, haven’t eaten all day, craving pad Thai, order over the phone (dinner) like this: “I’d like a chicken pad Thai please with shrimp”, employee took down my name and phone number, I said I’d be there in 20 mins, they said it might take longer like 30 mins. I get here and I’m told my total is $24 whatever. For pad Thai? Yes, because you asked for EXTRA protein. I look at the menu, says chicken pad Thai $15.50 + 3 for shrimp. So I ask for an explanation I’m told it’s because the shrimp pad that - which I didn’t order- is 15.50 + 3, making the total of this $18.50 plus $5 for chicken. Ok, ridiculous but I’ll pay 22. Somehow it’s still $24 something. This place may be good, but they’re even better at ripping people off. IMO
Will not return.
The food was amazing! Staff worked fast through the lunch rush and was very courteous, I look forward to eating here again.
*****update******
I have finally tried A Thai Cafe. Apparently all to-go orders must be placed online now. They are very short-staffed. BUT everything we ordered was delicious! The curry fried rice has pineapple and the sweetness with the veggies was very tasty.
The masaman curry was also very good; the rice was cooked perfectly and the vegetables were plentiful.
However, the star was definitely the Pad Thai!!! So very tangy, sweet and delicious!! We enjoyed it so much for lunch, we ended up ordering more for dinner.
My only complaint, my husband's complaint, rather, was that the *hot* spice level at lunch time was good and spicy, but was not spicy at dinner. Would be nice to have a little more consistency with the spice levels.
Overall very happy and will definitely order again.
************
Wish I could describe how the food is, as we have been looking forward to trying it since we found out you had reopened. Alas, I have no idea. I called to order and was left on the line... I finally got in the car to drive to A Thai Cafe to just order in person, but realized Cravings was on the way. So I went there. And ordered. And waited. And got our food. And drove home. Now we are eating it. And I am still waiting on the line for your employee to look down and remember they left me hanging. It has been 58 minutes (=
My wife loves it and says it's delicious, but the hours are so inconsistent.
Unable to order online due to “staff shortage.” I went in person at 7:47, saw three employees talking to each other. Tried to order and was told they stopped taking orders at 7:45. They close unexpectedly regularly and treat customers poorly. Good food but not worth the hassle.
Worst people who run this place. Rude!
I have been going to A Thai cafe since 2013 and I am finally old enough to write a review. A Thai Cafe has always been my family's go-to when my mom can't make dinner and I highly recommend the Drunken Noodle because of its sweet tangy sauce. Also the Summer Rolls with peanut sauce are pretty good too. After eating here for so long, I decided to apply! Well not really. I basically walked in after the super layed-back owner called my mom and asked her if I could come and see what it was all about. I came back the next morning and now I am very lucky to have what I think is one the best first-job experiences in Portage.
It's truly unfortunate I have to give a poor review here. The food is good but it takes 20 minutes minimum to get anything here. I looks like they only have 2-3 people working. I put in an togo order, after I paid they told me it was going to be 20 minutes. I'm now going I n 30 minutes sitting waiting! This is the second time I have been here, same really long wait both times now. There are only 16 people in the restaurant total, yes I counted. I don't know how they are still in business.
Vienna makes the best food ever. Today she made me some very delicious Tom Kha soup with chicken. I love this place.
We eat here several times a month, the food is always hot and fresh. The staff is always welcoming, we love Thai Cafe! I get the Tossed Veggies add chicken and it’s healthy and flavorful. My husband gets the Pad Thai. Both are always very good. The spring rolls are to die for too
This is my favorite place for Thai in the area after trying a couple since we moved here last year. I’ve been here multiple times so far, and they have never missed with me. The food is great and I have received it in a timely fashion. I have not had an issue with placing my order during there hours. And the service has always been personable and professional. I’ve gotten boba tea twice, the first time hot and the second chilled and both were great. Especially since each time I asked for weird combinations and have asked for suggestions. The food has always been flavorful and I like that the spicy is actually spicy. There’s nothing worse than asking for a 9/10 spice level and get mild, and A Thai Cafe is actually accurate in their spice levels in my opinion. Also, crab rangoons I highly recommend getting as a side order at least. Yes, their hours have fluctuated in the past because of life and this is a small owned business. I love that they will close instead of be open and the quality of the food suffers. I can tell that they care, and I look forward to all my future meals and boba I plan to order from here.
Absolutely love the peanut sauce fusion noodles, it's one of my favorites! Always fast service and delicious food.
Super delicious food! I like that they let you customize how spicy it is too.
My meal was different but fairly good. (Peanut sauce isn't my norm.) The crab rangoon in the combo platter was very saddening. (Crab rangoon is normally one of my favorites.) Just a very little cream of crab sauce in a huge hunk of crust. The main reason for the one star is, the other person with me... There meal was EXTREMELY bland. When asking for a side of sauce, we were told it was $5! After dropping about $60. When asked to speak the lady in charge... She came out with a very angry like demeanor. Enough that we only tried the place once and will never return.
the bubble tea is terrible, and they take a long time to prepare it and the latte tastes horrible.
do not use any false name, Sthefany is my first name and it is a lie that they prepared me the second drink when I was about to finish choosing which flavor, my husband came to pick me up, it had already been 20 minutes since I paid at 5:57 according to his ticket. I went to order a tea because I love bubble teas and hadn't tried one here so I stopped by while waiting to be picked up. The answer you write seems terrible to me and an abuse.
Love the Thai coffee and Thai tea, pretty good!! Good spice is good and portions were great!!
Best herbal fried rice ive had in a minute! And their boba tea is also very good, and HUGE 🧋
AMAZING food and service. However, wish the portion sizes were bigger/stayed the same size it was pre-pandemic. We have noticed the prices have gone up (which is fair due to the current situations) but the portion sizes have very well reduced.
Delicious vegan options! The bubble tea is delicious(and vegan!). The kind woman who took our order gave us some recommendations which was very helpful to me, it was my first time having curry and bubble tea. I got the Kew Wang with tofu(no spice) and a strawberry bubble tea and my husband got the Gaeng Gai with tofu(medium spice) and a taro bubble tea. We'll definitely be back! The only downside is it's not closer to home!
Killer food, unique options (cheese?! but it works!). A little expensive, but you can easily get 2 meals out of most dishes. Love it.
Love this Place food is always fresh tasting. Everything we get has been very good. You know your eating fresh when the leftovers taste even better.
New favorite Thai
Outstanding food!!! Excellent good tom kha gai
Tasty. Wife's favorite place for quick dinner pickup!
Amazing food. Can be spicy so start out with mild if you're not sure what you can handle.
Delicious! Great service!😋😋
Great bubble tea!
Don't bother if you want dine in
Amazing soups
Owner: please check your voicemail when I called it said you did not have a voicemail setup. Your response just proves I won’t be back. Maybe since they shut off the phones your voicemail saying order online wasn’t active. Either way that’s not my issue
Use to be great now you have to play a guessing game of when you can order and if they are open. Tried to call around 7:10 on a Saturday night no answer. Both their Facebook page and google said they were open so I decided to drive in. Got there the open sign was on walked in and tried to order only to be told they were not taking any more orders for the night. I said I tried to call and they said ohhh yeah we just shut the phone off ten minutes ago. Maybe pick up the phone and let people know you are closed. Or update your Facebook or google. Horrible customer service unfortunately will just be going somewhere else.
Best thai food I have ever had.Their tofu peanut curry is very tasty.Curry friend rice is good too.Staff is friendly and provide very good service.
The food is good .
Ran across this place while never being in Kalamazoo and quite possibly the best pad thai I’ve ever had. I highly recommend!
Amazing vegan options! Love it here
Their customer service was great and very friendly. I really wanted to give 5 stars since it's the only thai restaurant in Kzoo, but it's just that their food was horrible.. Tom yum soup was gross, not much things in it, the drunken noodle was nothing like I had in the other thai restaurants.. curry was not good as well.. They should upgrade their cooking somehow.
The Peanut Curry Noodle was great. Just thr right spiciness (med).
The worst and rudest management, customer service is practically zero here. Specially the manager with whom i had to speak about an issue with my order, she was very rude and kept shouting over the phone. Never had such a traumatic experience as a customer. Not once she apologised.
The server 'Addie' was ok but needs training in how to treat customers. With a terrible manager around I dont really blame her for poor customer service.
A piece of advice to the owners of this restaurant, if you want your customers to come back, change your staff. I have been a loyal customer for 3 years just because of the food ,which i must say, has been very inconsistent lately. But no more and i have also asked my friends and colleagues to never order from this place.
A Thai Cafe never disappoints, the food is delicious (huge portions for the price), and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Takeout orders are always correct and fast. You cannot go wrong with any of the menu items here!
Stopped at this place on a road trip to Chicago. Our food was prepared very quickly, and what I ordered (spring roll and pad Thai Tofu) was absolutely delicious! Wish I lived close by so that I could frequent this fantastic restaurant.
Love the food but they never answer the phone
Good take out experience! The food is great. A little pricey, but the servings are large! They forgot one item in our order and issued a refund for that item as soon as I called. Our group especially enjoyed the sesame chicken and the pad thai!
Absolutely can't get enough of this place! Literally drove directly from our wedding to get take out here and brought it home to eat in front of the campfire because that's out favorite thing to do.
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in all of Michigan. The only problem is their hours are inconsistent. I tend to drive by here during long holiday weekends and they usually shut down for several days to a week even around the minor holidays.
Great taste as always. Service has come a long way.
Ate here tonight for the first time and it blew me away. Not exaggerating - this is over the top good food. So so good.
Just got to Kalamazoo and I got lucky when I found this place great food amazing service fresh and fast definitely coming back for more!
Best Thai food anywhere!
My favorite restaurant in Kalamazoo! The staff has been awesome during this covid pandemic.
Food is great, very friendly staff
Spicy good
Thai Cafe is the BEST Thai restaurant I've ever been to, and this is considering I've tried many Thai restaurants across the country. The family who owns it is super nice always give the best service. Their servers are the best at their job and are the sweetest people!! Izzy and Ally are great at their job and make my visits to Thai Cafe even better!! They remember my order and know exactly how I like my meal every time I go!. I'm moving out the state soon and will be so sad when I no longer have Thai so close to me!! Thank you Thai Cafe for being the best restaurant in town! WE LOVE YOU!!!
Addie and staff are so nice, great food!
Best Thai food in Kalamazoo
Great food! Easy online ordering, timely curbside pickup. Highly recommend spring roll and peanut curry mild + for spice and I like spice.
My favorite place for lunch and takeaway in Kalamazoo!
Delicious! So glad I finally found out about this place. I had a spicy ginger beef stir fry and it was awesome! Great tea selection. You better check it out!
This is my favorite restaurant in Kalamazoo. Peanut curry noodle is my go to dish. So good. Portions are generous, even at lunch. Service has really improved lately.
Good pad thai and above average fried rice. But order took way too long. Still way too long!
Edit: On two occasions the ice coffee is thick and sour. Please have some quality control for your beverage.
Delicious food. The taro bubble tea is a little weak on flavor, but strawberry was amazing.
Awfully incompetent staff, 2 out of 3 times my order is wrong. Staffed fully with young probably first time servers and it shows.. Nice food, decent quality. Also be very sure ask and double check you’re getting VEGAN items if you need/order them.
Just make sure you are checking your food before walking out with your togo orders or anything like that.
Unfortunately I don’t much enjoy having to ask for something more than once, being walked past multilateral times by all staff on the floor.
Will continue to eat here but hope it gets better.
