My first visit in over a decade. I remembered it being mediocre then, and it's not better now.
I decided to try the Pad See-Ew, and got the wettest, soggiest thing I've been served. Seriously, most places' curries are usually not this wet. I don't know what is wrong with everyone giving this good reviews - there's a much better Thai restaurant a few doors down! The only reason I was here, not there, being that they were on vacation.
The chicken was overcooked, like it was pre-cooked and just added to the sauce. The noodles were fine, in spite of there being nowhere near enough of them for the amount of sauce. They gave me fish sauce when I asked, but it's one of the cheap brands because it's incredibly salty (even for fish sauce) and tastes off instead of funky. The sauce had a mildly soapy aroma at times that didn't help matters any. And no, it wasn't cilantro - there isn't any, and I love cilantro.
The attached photos show the dish as served, the wet remainder after, and the napkins after wiping my beard multiple times.
In short, don't waste your time or money. Go anywhere else.
Food tasted good. Wish I had asked for a higher spice level. I ordered drunken noodles with chicken and shrimp, a spring roll and thai iced tea. After placing my order, I had to step out to pay for parking because most of the street parking pay booths do not work. When I got back my food was waiting on the counter. If you are dine in, you order at the counter and pay first. The atmosphere is nice. Smooth jazz plays with the occasional talking in between from what I assume to be a radio station. When I retrieved my food I was confused because the noodles aren't wide noodles. They only have thin noodles similar the ones found in Pad thai. I was hoping for wide flat noodles. I got my food and took my seat. The food taste good, but I only recommend the spring roll. It was nice. Classic taste and fried. The thai milk tea was more milky than expected. I'm used to a deeper orange color showing the balance of tea and milk. This is a light orange color as seen in the photo. More milk than tea. Seems most around here don't order spice so the levels are lower. If you like spice like me, I recommend othering hot. It won't be that spicy. The people who work here are really kind and having local connections, so if you become a regular, they will greet you in a more friendly manner and maybe even remember your name.
My husband and I, along with several friends, have been devoted patrons of this gem for the past eight years, and it remains our favorite Thai restaurant in Michigan. As self-proclaimed Thai food connoisseurs—and having had the privilege of visiting Thailand—we can confidently say this place is a standout.
The dishes are consistently packed with bold, authentic flavors and are always perfectly prepared. Not only is the food absolutely delicious, but the value is truly unmatched. The generous portions and incredible quality make the price point almost too good to be true.
We’ve been ordering from here at least once a week—sometimes twice—for the past seven years, and it never disappoints. The efficiency is remarkable, with most orders ready in about 10 minutes. For those new to the menu, we highly recommend trying the combo options, which include fried rice, a crispy chicken wing, and a flavorful soup alongside your entrée.
This restaurant has become a beloved part of our weekly routine, and it continues to deliver exceptional meals with every visit. Truly, a hidden treasure we can’t recommend enough.
We ordered the pad Thai and the kiss me beef. Once we got home I was like, my pad Thai looks weird. Well it was a pad cew. Disappointing. It didn’t even taste good. Eggs tasted like rubber and chicken was chewy like rubber. Weird. And the kiss me beef was right… technically. But it was so drenched in sauce that it honestly wasn’t edible. We gave it to a homeless lady on 8 mile
I had the Curry Chicken with White Rice and it’s was absolutely delicious. I also had ordered fried chicken wings. Hands-down, the best I have ever gotten outside of a chicken restaurant. Try this combo together: Curry, Chicken and Chicken Wings!!! You will have no regrets!
The flavors are good but my dish was almost only rice...I'm honesty kind of shocked! First time trying this place, and maybe they put less food in pick up orders? I got the princess shrimp and got home to find there are maybe 4 shrimp, a tiny sprinkle of veggies and about 80% rice.
I'm not sure if you ran out of the ingredients needed? I think I paid too much for almost just rice and sauce.
Always the best!! Everytime I come back to visit Michigan, I have to eat here at least twice! I will be back soon! Highly recommend the Kiss Me Beef and gotta get the soup, with an extra soup because it is that good lol! 😊

Hands-down favorite Thai food in Ferndale. Been eating here since 2000!
I did not like the fried rice it was real dark brown didn't like the shrimp curry it had a funny taste and the chicken wings one crispy and it wasn't to my liking or the taste

Most amazing family ran restaurant in my area. Always kind customer services, always hot food, and very very fair prices. We wont go anywhere else! Please stay the same!!
Got takeout. Service was perfectly fine. The food (pad Thao and fried rice) was so salty it was inedible. This was my first time here.

I used to go here every day, sometimes 2x a day two decades ago growing up in Detroit. Was the most addictive Thai food on the planet. It's not just good, it's addictive.
My goodness what an exciting find here in Fabulous Ferndale!!! The food is the best I’ve eaten in a long time!!! Two people with a drink for under $30!!! This is my new favorite restaurant in this city. The plates were heaping full and delicious!!! Wow!!! A+++!!! We’ll be back here very soon!!!
I had chicken curry which the best I’ve had since I lived near Chinatown in San Francisco!!! My friend had beef and broccoli which was very good too!!!
absolutely incredible Thai food, been coming here a couple times a month for like 3 years
Baby! This is the most amazing Thai food on the planet. They are kinda far from where I live, but when I’m in Ferndale I make my way over to Mays Bangkok the absolute best Fried Rice in Town!
Whenever I get the curry with seafood I barely get any shrimp! This time I had seafood curry with white rice I literally had two pieces of shrimp and three baby scallops and one piece of crab meat and I paid over 15 dollars for it. The food is usually good here but today I was disappointed 😔
During my recent visit to my favorite Thai restaurant, where I have dined consistently for the last decade, I encountered an unexpected and disappointing service issue. I have a dietary restriction due to an allergy, necessitating my order of rice without eggs. However, the restaurant staff declined to accommodate my request, citing a minimum order quantity that I had not met. This refusal was surprising given my frequent patronage and that I’ve ordered this exact order before. Furthermore, it wasn’t the only thing I was ordering and removing egg.
Additionally, the quality of the meals has been inconsistent of late. Regrettably, this experience has diminished my enthusiasm for what was once my preferred local Thai spot.
It seems they now prioritize certain customers over others, leading me to feel unwelcome and underserved.
My favorite Thai spot, hands down, I drive over an hour sometimes, and they have never disappointed me. If you want good food and great service, this is it! They have the best prices and the best tasting food
everything is always so fresh and so good. great prices! i drive 1 hour round trip just to go here. best thai in all of SE michigan hands down.
Great food and consistent!
The food was delicious but too salty.
I happened to pass by and went in to get carry out. I got the classic Pad Thai it was ready quickly and was very delicious.
The food has been consistently amazing for 40 years! This is & has always been a family owned business. 40 years ago had lunch here daily while working next door. To this day, when the Thai craving hits... this is the ONLY place to go! There are many Thai places across the area Oakland & Macomb.... don't even bother. If you want the best....just go here. Don't settle for mediocre, or what you think is good....until you've been here.
The food is amazing, fast, and we love the staff.
The sweet and sour chicken and spring rolls are amazing. The portions are great for the price, and the food is ready insanely fast. Very kind service too. :)
I am obsessed with this place. I have been a patron for at least 12 years now. I live in the Toledo Ohio area now and will make special trips to Ferndale just to get their food. The Thai food in Toledo just does not compare. I highly recommend.
Reliable, good portions for the price - friendly people. Always coming back <3
Only Thai Place Near Royal Oak I Recommend.
Always a good meal!
I love it here! Friendly, fast, and fantastic staff. My food is always hot and delicious. I frequent this establishment at least once a week. Thanks, May! I'll see you tomorrow!
I truly adore this place the food here is wonderful
Great food and service! Small space so probably better for take out than date night! Definitely good eating though!!
Ordered the #5 with chicken to go. The food was HOT when I picked it up which was awesome. The food smelled and looked so good. I ordered it mild and it was actually pretty spicy so if you want it to have no spice you need to say that. Lots of food, good price, tastes good. I'll be back!
I wish the food was less salty. I wish they had brown rice. I wish the take out stir fry portion was larger and the white rice wasn't thrown into the container just to get soggy. Only recommend this place in a pinch.
delicious potato curry, fried rice, and thai tea. best thai food in metro detroit, i drive from plymouth/canton to get this food!
I don’t normally leave reviews, especially when they’re bad, but this was by far the worst meal I’ve ever eaten. Everything was super salty and tasted like an old grill that hadn’t been cleaned in a long time. Each dish had far too much sauce, like everything was soupy. Do not recommend.
New go-to Thai food. Dined in, service was quick - in and out in 30 min and the staff was polite and helpful! Ordered the chicken pad Thai hot and it was delicious. Also had the fried rice, spring rolls, and chicken wings - equally good and cooked perfectly.
I stopped in here to grab lunch only because I couldn't walk another block in the heat to my usual place. I was very pleasantly surprised! I got the pad Thai and loved it! I've never gotten a orange slice(along with a lemon slice) and I think I prefer the orange. Regardless, I think I have a new pad Thai place.
We love their Thai food! The prices are great too. The fried chicken 🍗 legs are a MUST try if you haven't tried them!
Great place for takeout and dine in. My favorite is the Kang Kalee meal. My favorite place to eat in Michigan for sure. And the people that work there are really cool.
This is the BEST thai food I have ever had. I have tried other places and it is never as good as May's. The portions are good size and they have never made a mistake on my order
Short staffed. A woman, May?, yelling into her cell phone the entire visit. Food was good but nothing over and above. Won't hurry back
I have been going here for over 20 years- and it’s always the same experience…excellent. No it’s not fancy- but it’s consistent and it’s always satisfying. May is a very sweet lady and works very hard to keep her customers happy. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. The chicken potatoe curry and any of their fried rices are a must! Go check it out.
Fried rice very good
Pretty good food. Most dinners are $10.
the only place you can get paid Thai for $11 in 2023
Best Thai food I've had in the area, pepper steak and combination was awesome, fresh veggies. Crab Rangoon was amazing 😍 first time visiting after returning home from vacation, and it was the perfect welcome home
This feels like Thai comfort food (or it's direct equivalent). I always get the shrimp fried rice (w/ extra shrimp). Total is $12 and the plate is so packed it usually lasts me 2 meals. Cannot recommend enough!
I am a now regular because the best of the best I RECCOMEND highly
May's Bangkok has some amazing food. I always get the pad ped with medium spice and it's delicious. Great proportions. Great prices. Friendly staff. The food is cooked quickly and it always tastes fresh. I come here numerous times a month. I would highly recommend!
Very nice spicy food, enjoyed a quick lunch on a Saturday. The soup with the combo meal wasn’t the best but the chicken wing with it was awesome.
Wasn't the worst Thai I've had but far from the best, in my opinion. Just tasted like everything was thrown together and not seasoned with anything. I would've driven to my go to Thai place in Warren. Siam cuisine. Slaps with flavors. Have yet to find another place like it.
Best tha food in metro Detroit.
My favorite Thai restaurant, been going here over 25 years for a reason. I dont know how to describe it but is more like Thai comfort food, I always leave full unlike at other Thai restaurants where I'm hungry 20 minutes later. They have the some of the best wings and Thai fried rice. Family owned by very nice people.
Absolutely my fav restaurant in the area!! The food is so good and flavorful, the prices and portions are awesome and the people working are always great!!
I have been going to May's Bangkok Express for 22 years.
My whole family loves May's it is a staple in our home, not only to relatives come from out of town just to get May's, but I have sent friends that are new to the delicious homey restaurant & love it just as much as I do.
Have you ever been to your restaurant a million times & tried a new restaurant & be so disappointed? Well that's how I feel when I try other thai food competitors in town of Ferndale, I'm always disappointed. NEVER May's! May's is delicious, HOT & fresh EVERYTIME.
Trust that this place will become your favorite! Especially if you are new to living in Ferndale. I say check it out! From a classic chicken or Beef fried rice. To my personal Favorite *Four Seasons* Hot ot Medium with Extra bamboo I so recommend if you love sea food & FLAVOUR!
Cheap. Not always what you expect. Recommend potato curry
Sadly and once again, all too frequently nowadays, a local favorite has turned into a literal (and I mean literal) s**t hole.
Took the wife and daughter there for lunch there today as we haven't been there in a while and always enjoyed the food. Two orders of Pad Thai with chicken and one vegetable curry with tofu and added potatoes. Net result, 3 cases of intestinal disfunction, cramps and diarrhea. That's 3 for 3 Mama May! Good work.
Can never recommend or return to this restaurant. Lucky we're not all in the hospital.
My vegetable curry, which has always been my reference dish that I compare all curry dishes to at others places, was so poorly prepared, I ate it only because I was starving. The potatoes that used to be perfectly cooked in the past, were like potato chips. The tofu was so overcooked, I could have shot out light bulbs with a large rubber band from across the room. Very few vegetables at all. Used to have fried eggplant, carrots, tomatoes, lots of bay corn, bamboo shoots, etc. and I was staring at a plate of curry drenched potato chips and soy briquettes.
What a cool little favorite place this USED to be for us.
Delicious flavors and made in front of you!! Yummy!!!
The best crab rangoons in the area! The pad thai is delicious and they even added a lemon slice to my takeout order and it complimented it so well. Very generous portions too! I am definitely ordering from here again.
MAY'S BANGKOK THAI RESTAURANT FERNDALE 👍👍 👍 👍 👎🏿
Decent Thai restaurant in Ferndale downtown opposite Thai cafe. Good for carry-out and very limited dining in options .
AMBIENCE & CLEANLINESS 👍Maintained just ok as more carry-out restaurant
LOCATION 👍 Ferdale downtown . Paid city parking.
QUALITY OF THE FOOD 👍 we ordered chicken fried rice, drunken noodles and pineapple fried rice . It's came out just ok.
SERVICE👎🏿 Not so so friendly and no smile. More promoting carry-out and not dining. One person operation at front house. Customer service has areas of improvements.
VALUE for MONEY👍 reasonably priced and ok to try
Don't go to any other Thai restaurant in the area. Small "hole in the wall place" Prices did go up recently (like everywhere else) Still a great deal for delicious food.
Super fast. Decent food. Afordable. They didn't have ice water and I had to buy a bottle. Wish they used paper instead of styrofoam plates.
Drunken Noodle is A1
Three words "Chicken Potato Curry"
Enough said
Staff is very nice, prices are good, the food is always good and FAST!
Ingredients were off last time I was there, had to through my order away.
Been coming here for over a decade and the food is consistently top notch. The kang kalee has my favorite curry flavor ever!
Some of the best Thai Food around... The staff are just about as friendly as it gets.
It's a personal fave. I'm there probably weekly.
This is our favorite place for really good curry at a great price. We usually get 2 servings out of each order.
The food is tasty. The price is affordable and it's always quick and easy. The staff is friendly. If you like Thai try this spot out.
Finally... I have found a great Thai restaurant! Everything here is fantastic, but most importantly, the quality!!! I will be returning often! Keep up the awesome job and commitment to great food!
Favorite Thai place in the area. Has all the standard dishes you want like pad Thai, drunken noodle, pineapple curry, and more. Prices went up recently, but are still very good for the amount and quality of food.
Hole in the walls have the best food!! The pad thai was delicious for a great price!!
Great food (only tried the staples so far). Spice was perfect. Open on Mondays! I'm excited to try more dishes.
So at first I was a little number because when I got home my sauced has leaked into the bag because the container broker, but then I started eating my food and realized I would’ve been happy to just lick the spoon lol it was amazing lol
Been going here for 25+ years the chicken wings are a treat. I get 3s company plus eggplant. I really enjoy it.
Idk if the chef bumped into the salt and dumped the entire thing in the dish or what…but damn. I feel like I just took a scuba diving course and almost drowned.
It’s a really underrated place. The flavor is there on most of the dishes but I have to give this place a 5/5 simply because the price is dirt cheep compared to its competitors. You can’t go wrong here.
Best Thai in Ferndale!
food is good with kind service
Mays food is terrific. Just had my first ‘not so great’ experience today because the food burned through the styrofoam (which would be toxic to consume).
Would really appreciate if you guys could package your food in other containers and in the meantime, wait for the food to cool off before placing in carry out.
I ordered what I consider the baseline which is their fried rice with chicken medium. The meal was flavorful and excellently done. I am looking forward to trying other entrées on my next visit.
Fast service and friendly staff
Always great service! Short wait and excellent food! LOVE THE SPRING ROLLS. Also very affordable.
Oh my god. I’ve been away for years, and decided to visit the Detroit area today. I got an order of chicken fried rice (hot)… it smelled so good, I wolfed it down in the car! May’s will ALWAYS be the best Thai food ever, and I will continue to drive 600 miles to get it as often as I can!!! THANK YOU!!!
Omg, I was so stuck on the Bangkok Cafe on Southfield Rd and Thai express in Southfield that I almost was not going to give this place a try! The food is hot, fresh, favorable and did I mention they have the best prices around!!! I ordered Pad thai with a side a red curry sauce and yummy! I can't even believe it comes with different meats at that price! My coworkers ordered and it's safe to say we will be regulars! Also if parking is not available in the front, park in the back lot and you will find the entrance next to the tented area! Thank you again!
The best Thai place around with staying power! I love that it's a mom & pop type restaurant & the food is always fresh! I highly recommend trying it out if anyone is new to Ferndale or old LoL b/c this place is well established in Ferndale and has been in business since the 90s. Very few places has had staying power like this in Ferndale & it's for a good reason!
Great food
My family loves this place!! My kids especially. It tastes like Grandma made it. (If my Granny made Thai.) Very yummy, fast, fresh, and homemade. Good prices and friendly service. Low key and small place. Been eating here for years and it’s consistently good.
They know how to make it spicy!
Good Tai food.
So good. My husband turned me onto the potato curry dish. Love it. They are consistent, affordable, friendly and delicious.
I love May's Bangkok express
I've been eating here for over 10 years
My favorite Thai food.
Service and food are great 🍜🍚🍽🍲
Horrible food , very bitter attitude at front desk and atmosphere was foggy, I threw my food away never going back
We tried the red curry with chicken and chicken fried rice. Both were delicious, good prices, large quantities of food. They called it a fast food Thai place, so the food is served fast.
I’ve been eating here since 2008 when I was in middle school, Always very pleasant and the food is delicious. I love eating here
The best
Great affordable food
Tried this place for the first time today and I definitely recommend!! Good prices and portion sizes, fast and friendly service :) I love the pad thai!
The best Thai food around. Always fresh and amazing!
I love May's! Great prices, filling portions, always ready in 10-15 minutes, and excellent food! My go-to Thai spot. If you want some spice, order it "hot". It will be spice.
This place should be considered a destination Thai restaurant and easily among the best in the country. The smoky wok hei infused #9 pad ped eggplant curry is a national treasure. Must order it hot and get the combo, chicken highly suggested.
The best Thai food ever , I drive 20 miles to taste that home cooking food
I work nearby and I wish they where local to where I live. Food is amazing and fast, perfect lunch stop during the work week. I always walk in to find my food ready and waiting for me. I could eat their curry chicken every day and often do several times a week. I never get sick of it. None of the other dishes I’ve tried have disappointed but I always go back to my old favorite. Tastes like a home cooked meal and I feel great passing up all the long fast food lines to get a delicious relatively wholesome (compared to fast food) meal. If I could give 10/5 stars I would.
Food is always great with good service!
My first time trying this place on yesterday... Unbelievably delicious!
Great service amazing food
Delicious food, followed covid guidelines, good portions and price, extremely fast! I'll definitely be back.
The food is awesome been eating here for years
Always great!
Wish they were on Doordash, GrubHub or UBER eats..
Very good and priced fairly.
Amazing food. We live in Virginia but make a point of coming to May’s any time we’re in the area. Haven’t found anything else closer to home that gets even close to May’s quality and flavor.
I’ve been to Thailand and May’s is still my favorite place for Thai food. The red curry is the best!
Food was great! Fast and friendly service.
The Best Authentic tasting and Great service!!💯
This place has a sign posted Closed until Dec 7.
AMAZING #12
Great, reasonably priced, and nice variety of options. Is probably top of the list for any time we're craving Thai now.
The curry noodles are excellent!
Best Thai spot! Drunken noodles with shrimp, chicken, and beef or curry shrimp and chicken are my favorites! Reasonable prices as well
The food was so delicious!!!
I have been coming here for YEARS! Like 20+ yrs if you want 😋 inexpensive DELICIOUS Thai food THIS IS YOUR GO TO i Promise you will not be disappointed.
Great family! Good Vibes 👍 Clean!
Chicken patatoe curry is the best around
The best Thai Food I've ever had. Wonderful family owned business. Fast and budget friendly.
My favorite no frills Thai place, I've been coming here for 20 years.
Delicious food!
Best Thai food in southeast Michigan and at super reasonable prices. Potato Curry is amazing, veggie curry is also great, ask for fried tofu if you get tofu because that isn't the default.
Oh and the noodle dishes are great too. So happy this place survived the pandemic. I LITERALLY have them on speed dial.
Great food! Super quick! Number one Thai food place in ferndale
Drunken noodles are the best if you like them sweet.
Best Thai food I ever had, also the best Thai food for your buck.
Consistent, fast, delicious. That is all I should need to say.
Suffice it to say I would drive over an hour just to get the curry chicken. It's one of the greatest things I have ever tasted.
I've been Dinning here for a number of years. Consistent cuisine and service.
Good thai food.
