Lum Thai is an exotic Thai restaurant where you can experience Thai food and drinks from across the world at your doorstep. Our menu features dishes assembled from the freshest ingredients and then cooked home-style with modern plating to make you feel warm and welcome with each bite. Located in Muddy Branch Square (Lum Thai next to Sharkey's Cuts for Kids) Gaithersburg Maryland.
I’ve visited Lum Thai a couple of times now, and each visit has been excellent. On my most recent trip, I started with the Chicken Wings, which were delicious but very hot—definitely give them a moment to cool down before enjoying! For my main course, I opted for the Drunken Noodles along with a beer. The noodles had a perfect Thai spice kick. I went with medium heat, and it was intense but flavorful. If you’re not used to spice, I’d recommend going for a milder option.
I’ll absolutely be coming back. The food is always delicious, the service is great, and the restaurant is spotless. Highly recommended!
Lumthai is a hidden jewel. I was there with a group of friends for lunch. The seating space can accommodate about 30-45 people , so suggest getting reservations for weekends.
The food was delicious, well presented and fresh. Our server was attentive and explained the ingredients to help our vegan friends with their order. Parking outside may get full as there are other restaurants in that strip. Special mention of Papaya salad and Mango rice , which were very good. Will definitely dine here again.
Edit: Gave this place another try and it has improved quite a bit. I go here once in a while now. Solid experience every time.
Original review: A bit disappointed by my experience here. Ordered the pineapple fried rice. The presentation was surprising because they gave me the whole half pineapple for my to go order which was nice I guess. However, the dish didn't taste very good and the shrimp wasn't very good either.
I know they just opened up so I'll give him another try but not a very good first impression.
I had the absolute best dish in my life at Lum Thai - Shrimp Ka Prai. It was made in perfection and I enjoyed every moment savoring the flavors. Personally, I’ve never had a bad dish here and this was 🤯 next level! I enjoyed this dish so much I had to thank the chef myself! 🤩 Wow wow wow
We ordered spring rolls, crispy eggplant and street noodles. The sprint rolls is not good, 3 small spring for $7.95 is pricey, not recommended. The crispy eggplant is tasty, however the crispy eggplant soaked into source, they becomea no crispy. It would be better if the source is separated from the eggplant, the customer can then dip into the source while the eggplant is still crispy.
The street noodles is not bad, but not too impressed.
My son ordered green curry with pork, the taste is ok. But they use the canned bamboo shoots, that cause the dish has wired taste, the source of curry is not thick, not impressed.
Returned from Thailand a few months ago and excited to try a new Thai restaurant within a reasonable price. Papaya salad was very well balanced and marinated chicken wings were juicy. The stir fry egg plant and crispy duck dishes were also delicious but a bit salty. I ordered medium spicy 🌶️🌶️ for most dishes. My new takeout spot and looking forward to trying chicken Khao Soi (traditional northern Thai dish).
LumThai in Gaithersburg is a go-to for Thai food lovers! I started with their famous Thai iced tea, which was a sweet, creamy delight. The curry puffs were flaky pockets of joy, and the basil fried rice had that perfect spicy kick. The crispy chicken ka prao was a savory winner. Only bummer? They were out of mango sticky rice, but delicious a Thai experience that I'd happily repeat! 🍛🌶️😋
This restaurant has become a family favorite. We come here often and have been trying the whole menu slowly but surely. Portions are generous and super flavorful.
My favorites are everything but my must have is always the crab Rangoon!! Most recently I loved the crispy eggplant with sauce on the side. But honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong.
Service is super attentive and welcoming. I couldn’t ask for a better experience.
Pad thai fair, sort of bland.
Finest Chicken Satay and Drunken Noodles!

This is our favorite Thai restaurant in the area. Pad Thai, drunken noodles, and paw see ew is always delicious. Service is always A+. Of course it tastes better in Thailand but for MD this place is pretty darn good.
Very good food and service.

Foot taste so good. Everytime I visit the food is the same. Yummy 😋
I really wanted to like it, but it was below average. Chicken wontons while crispy had no flavor, tasted just plain steamed ground chicken inside. Cashew chicken was overcooked yet dry and soggy. Drunken noodle was bland, missing the sour sweet spicy notes. Panang which we ordered spicy, had a great kick, but also semi bland. It is rare for Asian/Thai food to lack a “salty” quality, but all of the dishes tasted like low sodium diet food.
I ordered drunken noodles and duck, both mild spicy. However, upon eating, I found the noodles to be extremely spicy and inedible. Additionally, the duck was very tough and hard to chew

Amazing
Delicious every time we have gone.
Their special menu dishes are amazing.
I ordered takeout from this restaurant via Uber Eats. While 3 of the dishes were quite good, two entrees were made completely incorrectly. They did not give us the food we ordered and Uber eats would not refund or remake anything. The explicit order and instructions were in all caps on the receipt but the food did not match the order. It was a very frustrating experience.
I ordered panang curry (got it delivered). On the positive side, the spice level was just as I wanted (medium) and the veggies and tofu were all nicely cooked and good quality. On the negative side, the curry was unbearably sweet. It is actually almost inedible for me. Panang curry is not supposed to be sweet like this! The sweetness is supposed to come from the coconut milk and just a little tiny bit of palm sugar. This tastes like someone added like half a cup of sugar to my single portion. It's very sad!!
This is by far the best Thai place in the area. Food is tasty and seems to be made with fresh produce and meats. Please keep it up.

Delightful, not over-priced. Tasty food, A little salty.
Very disappointed.
Every since I visit Bangkok, I love Thai food and my favorite is Panang Curry, also ordered today Pad See Ew and Pad Ka Prao.
The Panang was watery and didn't even taste like Panang the other dishes salty and not right there. I feel like it was money trough away.
I am afraid, if you don't put a Thai chef, the quality just goes away. (Don't get me wrong I am Latino, that is not the problem here).
Unhappy with the food quality. The chef did a very sloppy job and didn't clean the food and remove sands well before it was served.
I had a fantastic experience. Not only is the staff lovely but they are super family friendly. At the moment that I walked into the restaurant, they were very welcoming. Seated us immediately provided me with a clean high chair for my toddler.
My toddler enjoyed the Drunken Lo Mein. This dish was savory and rich to the last bite. Delicious even the next day for lunch. The Pad Ka Prao Kai Sub was another favorite dish.
Delicious soup!!
This was so great. Food was extremely amazing.
So nice to have a neighborhood Thai place. Have only tried the classic dishes so far, but there will be many more visits. But you should know that an order of spring rolls has 3.
Mango Curry is sooooo good! Very clean and very very delicious! Please visit them!
Excellent food and food presentation, decorations, vibe and great customer service. Highly recommended looking for a Thai restaurant. Location has plenty of parking spaces and very easy to navigate to. Will be going here again as a returning customer.
My family's favorite Thai place!
Maybe the best Thai place in the DMV. Wonderful atmosphere, very friendly service, quick prep time and delicious food.
We drove to Gaithersburg today to have pre-Mother's day lunch in this place after seeing some great reviews. Their staff are very friendly and helpful and the place is clean. Everything that we ordered are very good and with nice presentation. I highly recommend this place to those who are looking for good Thai food. We are already planning to eat there again.
The servers up front are always so friendly and the food is amazing everytime i treat myself
I will definitely be back. I ordered the crab Rangoon's to start. My main was the massaman curry, it was delicious! I really enjoyed the potatos in it. The whole dish was great and had the mango sticky rice dessert, definitely recommend. The restaurant is small but nice, cute decor and they do offer some beers and wine.
Wonderfully flavorful food and friendly service.
Best Thai place in the area!
Clean and great presentation, will be back!
I woke right up the street and never knew they existed but I came in today and service was excellent, place was very clean , food was amazing and atmosphere was open and relaxing. 100% recommend people to come and try this place out!!
After spending 2.5 weeks in Thailand, my husband and I were missing and craving Thai food so we decided to check out Lum Thai. We ordered the tom yum soup with chicken, nam tok salad, crispy dusk ka prao, and khao soi chicken. All of the dishes were delicious and hit the spot! Best Thai food I've had in MoCo. I highly recommend Lum Thai and will be coming back!

I love this Thai restaurant!
Food is always fresh and delicious. Staff is very professional, personable and consistently prepares a perfect meal. I like to customize my orders by adding different veggies and extra protein (usually shrimp or salmon). They strive to satisfy your every request.
I took home a phenomenal meal on 1/14/24 and had enough for 2 generous meals.Soooo yummy. A wonderful addition to the Muddy Branch Shopping Center.
Thank you!
Food is absolutely DELISH! Served fresh and hot. Made to order.
Everyone is so friendly and polite. A MUST place to dine.
Went during my lunch break, the food was busssin. Noticeable taste difference between here and other places. Would highly recommend!
Food is really authentic. Unlike most Thai places (e.g., Elephant Jump, Cool Basil, Golden Leaf) that have more Americanized cuisine, this restaurant utilizes fresh and simple. My drunken noodles have heat coming from fresh Thai chilies and not only dried spices and the pad thai wasn't overtly orange nor overtly sweet. I highly recommend their Khao Soi (curry soup) as it was extremely delicious and had a variety of textures.
Great experience! Super friendly and helpful service, and the food was phenomenal with just the perfect amount of spice!
This is a top notch Thai restaurant. Food is very tasty, prices are reasonable considering the quality of food. People are nice and polite. Enjoyed eating here. Will return.
Best thai food in the area. Under-hyped. Found a gem within Gaithersburg. Food is great, atmosphere is great, and service is great.
The food was really delicious. We ordered street noodles, Panang curry, basil fried rice and everything was delicious.
This is the spot! First, I was blown away by how clean the facility was.
The food is always fresh and consistent. The staff has a great sense of urgency and always make me feel welcomed.
We love Lum Thai! The service is prompt and friendly and the food is fresh and flavorful. The dishes have a good assortment of veggies. Highly recommend!
Absolutely love this place…been here a couple of times and it’s always delicious. Especially the Tom Kha soup…couldn’t stop thinking about it after my first time here.
The food was excellent, fast and nice service!
Delicious food, quick service

Crabmeat fried rice 10/10 sooo good. Highly recommended, they were super nice in there also.

It's great to have another Thai option in Rockville. I got Lum for takeout and tried the chicken pad Thai and mango sticky rice. Both were great. The pad Thai sauce seemed lighter than I expected/am used to but the flavor was still good. The sticky rice was cooked perfectly and included plenty of fresh and ripe mango slices.
Delicious!
Amazing soup here
Summary: Hurried and unwelcome.
We received a promotional menu with a discount coupon in the mail and was excited to try out a new Thai restaurant near our house since Thai is one of our favorite cuisines.
Service (1.5/5) : It states that they close at 9pm on Friday so our friend called around 8:20pm to see if our party of 6 could still be seated. They said we could stay until 9:30pm. Great! Or so we thought....they failed to state that your party would feel rushed and unwelcome the entire time, so you might as well go elsewhere if it's anywhere near their closing. As the last dish for our party was served, they immediately handed us the checks to sign and hounded us to sign it over and over again. She literally stopped our conversation in order to get us to sign the checks. Not sure why they did this as we wouldn't have been able to leave since our food was just served. This was at 9pm, what happened to the 9:30pm that was stated earlier? If you didn't want to serve us, you could have told us on the phone before all of us drove in. I get that we came in as they were closing but that's why we called to ask ahead of time.
Food (3.5/5): Joyce got the beef pad see ew and I got the beef street noodles. The portions were decently sized, albeit smaller than the other Thai restaurants in the area. All our dishes came out with a spiralized carrot which looked fancy but was unnecessary. Her pad see ew tasted pretty standard. Her friend that got the same dish stated that it was more sweet than other places. My street noodles tasted kind of like a drunken noodle dish but spiced with sambal. I would give you more details about the food but I felt like I needed to scarf it down since the staff were breathing down our necks.
Ambiance (3/5): Unremarkable with wooden chairs & tables, their LED sign is cool.
Overall, we were looking forward to Lum Thai, but was highly disappointed by the lack of hospitality. There are too many other similar options in the area with bigger portions and similar price point and quality.
We visited when it had just opened. Nice interiors and food. Good wait staff. I recommend this restaurant
I ordered Som Tum with shrimp, Mango with Sticky Rice and Thai ice tea to go. Som Tum sauce were light on fish sauce and not enough seasoning. The portion was larger than typical apps but most were lettuce filler. I prefer small portion with papaya as it should be. Mango with sticky rice wasn’t that good. The sticky rice was over cooked and mushy and the coconut sauce weren’t correctly done. There was very little very little coconut milk and added a lot of corn starch/tapioca flour. Looks amazing but tasted mediocre. Thai ice tea came in a juice bottle so you have to take it home and add ice.
Love that there is a great Thai place in the area now. The food was excellent and prices were fair. Definitely try the crispy duck.
Delicious food and excellent service
Really good food. Loved everything i had! Will be coming back.
Been to a lot of Thai places in the area and this is now my favorite. There are a couple closer to my home within walking distance, and are very good but LumThai is that much better. I ordered the crispy duck ka prao. It's something you don't always find and the only other time I remember having it at a Thai restaurant was in New York. My wife got the drunken noodles and that was very good as well. She also really liked the crispy eggrolls and I got the Tom Yum soup for an app and was pleased with it. It's a simple dish, and some places make it a bit too salty or not flavorful enough. Will definitely be back for more crispy duck and maybe try a new app...with more Tom Yum of course.
The food was great, service was great and the atmosphere was cozy but nice. Food was great and the portions were generous so can't complain. Server was super nice and friendly. Atmosphere was a little small but not a big deal. I liked it and will come back.
Okay. This place is hands down the BEST Thai food around. We have been going to different restaurants on the search for the best basil fried rice and this place has it. Spicy, sweet, flavorful, you won’t regret it. The portions are good. We had a Thai tea and the curry puffs and both were delightful. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. Great overall experience.
I LOVE this Thai food so much! It’s so flavorful, with all types of dishes to try including appetizers. They give you a great portion of food, and I genuinely enjoyed eating there. The employees are very sweet and considerate, and I overall loved the atmosphere there. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a new Thai restaurant, as this is my new fav and go to Thai restaurant!
This is my new favorite restaurant! The food is amazing and the presentation is perfect. Friendly and attentive staff make it somewhere you want to go over and over. If you like Thai food you will love this place!!!
Food was amazing!!! I had the curry puff and shrimp lo mein!! It was yummy!!!
The area is increasing of high quality Thai cuisine and this is one of them. We ordered quite quite few dishes including Pad Thai, Crispy Duck Ka Prao, Tom Kha, and a couple appetizers to share.
The Pad Thai wasn’t too sweet like a lot of Thai places. The duck was crispy, not too much fat. The Tom Kha wasn’t too heavy on the coconut cream taste which most Thai places are. Best of all, the food came in good proportions. The menu is small but seems like all the dishes are well curated. Very unique plating too, not too much with an authentic impact.
The atmosphere is good for dates or just casual dinner (although they don’t have alcohol currently - that may change later not sure).
Omg, the pad see ew is so good here that I want to eat it every single day. Service was great. It was CLEAN. Decor was simple and tasteful. 5 stars.
The positives:
- The drunken noodles were very good
- Chicken special dish was also good
- order and pick up were easy
- Food was ready quickly
The negatives:
- Don’t expect a lot for your money
- Chicken Satay was small, a little chewy, and seemed to be from a package (all pieces were exactly the same sized and uniform in shape and had the exact same “grill marks”
- Calamari was a ripoff. Only a few pieces in the container
- Online order said it would be ready in 25-30 minutes, got a text 10 minutes after I ordered and it was ready (and sitting on the counter when I arrived 20 minutes later)
Bottom line:
- worth a try but there are better Thai options around
Got the usual Thai Basil fried rice with tofu and pad Thai with chicken. Both great!
First time trying LumThai. The Thai dumplings were very very good. I also ordered the massaman curry and was very disappointed that there were no potatoes as listed in the menu description, and would typically be in that dish. If they were out, I would have liked to have been told and would have probably chosen something else. The pad see ew had a nice flavor, but the sauce was not as dark or rich as I typically enjoy. I will probably try another thing or two because the location is much more convenient to my home than my favorite Thai restaurant over 20 minutes away.
Excellent authentic Thai menu.
Great food! We had a very good lunch!
Lum Thai is a Thai restaurant in Muddy Branch Square shopping center that opened about a month ago. They don't have their liquor license yet. Their Thai Iced Tea was more milk than tea. We shared Blanket Shrimp, which consisted of four shrimp wrapped in thin crispy rolls, deep fried, and garnished with shredded carrots and purple cabbage and served with sweet and sour sauce. My boyfriend enjoyed the Basil Fried Rice with Pork. I loved the Pad Thai with Vegetables (including bean sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and snowpeas). My only complaint is that if I wanted vegetables and tofu, it would cost an additional $4.
Great quality thai food. Ordered through doordash. Will definitely be ordering again!
If are looking for a really delicious Thai restaurant, I highly recommend LumThai. The food is absolutely delicious! You could really taste the flavor of the chicken pad Thai, crispy eggplant and Panag curry. The Thai ice tea is very yummy and it complimented the mango sticky rice which was also a delicious dessert.
The restaurant itself is quaint, cozy and very clean. The customer service is superb also. The servers were very friendly and helpful. And last but not least, the gender neutral bathrooms are very clean.
Authentic, Traditional, Thai food . Sooooo Fresh. Sooooo Good
Friendly and kind service, very decent cuisine, well-priced. Their menu has everything from Khao Soi, Papaya Salad, to an excellent Larb Gai, and Penang Curry. They really nailed the spice level we were looking for “American spicy 🌶️😋🌶️”
This is an excellent spot for a low-key dinner or lunch in between running errands.
The service and food was great!
LT had the best mango with sticky rice I've ever had ever! The tofu was delicious and juicy, and the rice was so yum!
The food is very delicious. I loved how helpful the waitresses were.❤️
