Herb is the No. 1 Thai Restaurant in Chicagoland. Michelin recommended Restaurant 9 years in a row & Award Winning Restaurant & Chef Patty Neumson. Our Food is healthy, delicious & beautiful, using the finest ingredients. Dine in & pickup available.
Chef Patty and the Herb restaurant creates an experience that is one of a kind. One that is hand curated to give you not only traditional Thai food, but farm-to-table fresh ingredients and microgreens that makes you not only feel full, but feels extra special AND healthy. Chef Patty has a curated menu that is truly so special, and she came by our table to share her insights on each of the items in the menu. The tumeric trio mushroom soup was something I’m going to dream about, and come back just to have more and more of. It was truly something, and it makes sense why this is in the Michelin Guide. Would 100% be coming back again.
Wow. Herb is a true gem in Chicago's restaurant scene.
I've been in the city for ten years and love exploring its many amazing culinary offerings. But there are a few really special experiences that stay with me-our dinner at Herb is now one of them. Chef Patty is doing magical things with simple, fresh ingredients. She personally greeted us at our table and guided us through our entire dinner. We went with the full seven course option and it was an incredible journey. Rooted in the delicious flavors of Thai cuisine that make it so popular, every course did something to elevate the experience and add a surprising twist. The plates were visually stunning with balanced flavors. The service was warm and attentive, but never overbearing. It is clear that Chef Patty is passionate about this restaurant, and that comes through in the dishes and the attention to every detail. My favorite dish was the Betal Leaves starter. It was so fresh and unique with a blend of subtle flavors that made us both grin as soon as we put the first one in our mouth. We knew from that first bite we were in for a fun evening. l've been to Oriole, Alinea, El Ideas, and many other Chicago culinary heavyweights. Our dinner at Herb was on that level. This place is a must-visit.
My friend and I went here to celebrate my upcoming wedding. She found Herb which has an affordable tasting menu that has 3 menu tiers. We went with the middle option, which was 5 courses and dessert. Each dish was expertly crafted and really let the main ingredients shine. Chef Patty also checked in on us frequently to ensure that we were satisfied with our meal. Our favorite dish was the chicken coconut curry; we could have eaten the curry sauce with just rice because it was that good. Will definitely be back in the future!
I went to Herb to celebrate my birthday with my family, and WOW, was I impressed across the board. Patty, the owner and chef, was incredibly welcoming, shared details about each dish, and truly made the evening a special experience. Each dish was delectable and very flavorful. To top it off, I received a surprise birthday dish with the best mango I've ever had, as well as a birthday gift. I couldn't have had a better experience at Herb, highly recommend! Hospitality was immaculate, thank you Patty and the rest of the amazing staff!
Amazing experience at Herb! Chef Patty was friendly and talked to us about each dish. We got the plant-based tasting menu and everything was fresh and unique. Real stand outs were the mushroom turmeric soup and betel leaves, as well as the mango sticky rice dessert. Classy atmosphere and delicious food with attentive service. Definitely recommend !
We're visiting from out of town and some friends who are locals booked this dining experience. It was the first time for us all. Chef Patty greeted us, took our order, explained the menu and goal of the atmosphere and experience she is looking to recreate. She absolutely delivered on her vision. All of the wait staff were incredibly friendly. There were four of us all doing the 5 course experience. I ordered primarily from the plant based menu which was so thoughtfully prepared. The plating and presentation was phenomenal. Each dish built on the previous and was a gradual introduction of heat (spiciness) in a very methodical way. All four of us left no morsel of food on our dishes and we left feeling satiated. This is the best Thai dining experience I've ever had. Even the music was soothing. We were not rushed - the dishes came out with a cadence that allowed for us to enjoy each other's company and comment on the dishes, fresh ingredients and really elevate the evening. Chef Patty has done something very special here and this is a hidden gem I highly encourage you to experience.
This is one of the best restaurants in Chicago! The tasting menu is well worth it. Every dish brought to us was phenomenal. The staff all around were super friendly and tentative. Don’t listen to the low reviews, I can’t see any of that being true based on my experience. Do yourself a favor and go try this unique, tasteful well done restaurant.
Beautiful space, excellent, creative dishes using fresh, local ingredients. The staff is attentive and friendly. There are three fixed price dinner options, offering increasing amounts of food. We opted for the four course menu, which was exceptionally flavorful and filling. A bit pricey.
We came in a day after valentine's day and were told that because the kitchen was incredibly busy, the only option we had was the 5 course menu.
Reluctantly, we agreed and then were ultimately given only 4 courses over a 2.5 hour time period. For the food we had, we felt that we were overcharged. And even though we voiced our concerns and were only charged for 3 courses, I don't think it was worth the money. The chef was incredibly sweet and came to our table to adfresss our concerns.

The wait was INSANELY painful that coming back is not justified, even when the food was very tasty.
It took 25 minutes for someone to take our order after we were seated and another 25 minutes to get the check. It’s because they only have ONE person that is allowed to take the orders and give/process the check— the two “waiters” only ran the food, could not ask basic questions on the menu, and could never make eye contact so we could flag anyone down. What was worse is she went to sit down to another table to chat. It appeared that she was inputting every item manually despite the menu was just three options.
This is easily solvable and I hope adjustments are made for the service to match the food.
Super long wait, slow service
Best Thai food I’ve had in Chicago!
Was really excited about trying this restaurant for a while since I am a big fan of thai food. The service went wrong from the beginning. The server forgot to come to our table to take the order. The other woman server came to our table to take the drink order and also forgot the order afterward. It was just a messy beginning. Then, the other table’s appetizer came to our table and was taken away because of their mistake. It was supposed to be high level (or my misunderstanding) restaurant and should provide a better service. The appetizer was not bad but not awesome. The minced pork and chicken curry were more like thai fusion (more like American style). So sweet/salty for the minced pork and bland for the curry chicken. Such disappointing experience. Not spicy at all… No one asked whether we like it or not and no one explained the cuisine.
Experience was not good and the food was averaged but with very high price. We spent over $200 for two but we felt the food and service only worths less than $100. We came with high expectations because we were here for celebration. I do not recommend this at all if you expect good food in a great atmosphere.
Chef tasting menu was fantastic! Lots of food, great flavors and friendly attention
Wow. On August 1, my husband went on Open Table and made reservations for us to have our 25th wedding anniversary dinner at this restaurant. Our anniversary is August 31st. I read reviews and considered many restaurants before selecting this one for our special night. I told several people where we were going for our special dinner celebration and said we were really looking forward to our dinner there as we had read many good things about the restaurant. They all asked me to let them know what we thought of the restaurant and food in case they wanted to try it. We received a phone call this evening, August 30, about 6:00pm (24 hours before our reservation) from someone at the restaurant telling us they are not open this weekend. We have had these reservations for a month!! They call the night before to tell us they are not open? Needless to say, my husband is furious. I am appalled. What a sick joke. Is this any way to run a business?
Beautiful space, excellent, creative dishes using fresh, local ingredients. The staff is attentive and friendly. There are three fixed price dinner options, offering increasing amounts of food. We opted for the four course menu, which was exceptionally flavorful and filling. A bit pricey.
The staff and the chef were amazing, kind, and it was clear that they cared about their food! The food was flavorful, light, warming, and delicious. Highly recommend.
This is, hands-down, one of the best date-night restaurants in Chicago. Three tasting menus with increasingly more food. The flavors pop in your mouth with each bite. Freshest ingredients ever. Go! The menu hasn’t changed in a while so you may not want to go more than once or twice until they do change it but it’s so worth a trip.

This place needs to be talked about more. What an amazing experience. The flavor of each dish is spectacular. Thank you Chef Patty for blessing me and my friends with your cooking and hospitality.
Really enjoyed this place. Very welcoming and unassuming vibe. Accommodated vegetarian seamlessly. Lots of really interesting dishes that I’ve never had before and left me feeling satiated but not stuffed at the end of their tasting menu. Would highly recommend and will certainly be back.
LOVE everything about this place. We been going for many years and tonight we had good friends gathering and it was great. Patty the head chef who is amazing and Billy took care of us was great too. I highly recommend HERB, it's a must go to place for healthy, exotic, and delicious food.
Went for a birthday. Great, excellent food, but poor service.
We did the $75 pre fixe menu option. Every single item of food was amazing.
Ambiance of the place was small, cozy, warm feel.
What wasn't amazing was waiting 30 minutes in between each food item, as well as waiting 1 hour for dessert and another 30 minutes for the bill.
Great place to try, but perhaps they were understaffed on the night we went.
I have been wanting to try this place for a while and was very disappointed in the food and service. We prebooked the tasting menu option through Tock, when we arrived it took over 10 minutes for someone to take our order. They did not ask or confirm our order, just took the menus away assuming we wanted the meat options, also no inquiry about allergies. The tasting menu was poorly timed, well over 2 hour experience with food on the table for less than 25 minutes of the time. The food arrived with no explanation of what the dish was, and to be honest very underwhelming taste wise, lacking favor, curry was just a bowl of coconut milk. Our time and money would have been better spent at almost any other neighborhood Thai joint. We love Asian cuisine, and maybe the target audience for this restaurant is for those who are less adventurous with flavors.
The atmosphere is fun, cute and peaceful. The food is AMAZING!! The full tasting menu does come with a lot of food, so come early and come hungry! Highly recommend!!!
We hosted our daughter's 16th birthday party here. We were a group of 12 people.
Chef Patty went above and beyond in communicating with us before the event to make it special for my daughter and her friends.
This is the best Thai restaurant in Chicago, hands down.
We also were happy to get excellent service and food.
Super nice people and restaurant. Highly recommend it.
Highly recommended!!
We selected the 5-course prix fixe option. Every dish was an unfolding of flavors with each bit. Chef Patty suggested closing our eyes when eating first course ( Basil leaf roll-up thing), which was spot on as it truly enhanced the experience.
Added bonus: most of menu is or can be made gluten free
My granddaughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Herb. We checked before hand lbecause of food allergies and dietary restrictions and were informed that the staff would happily accommodate our dietary preferences. We were delighted to find so many options that were gluten free and vegetarian and the wait staff and chef eager to make sure of our choices. Not only was the atmosphere and service outstanding, but every single thing we had was delicious. Chef Patty was incredibly kind and came to speak to us and check in throughout the evening. This was truly a dining experience and the best Thai food ive ever had! We will definately be coming back.
Great flavors!
Great Experience. I am taking 1 star away for service which I felt was a bit disorganized that day. The food is just amazing and the menu is very innovative. We tried the set menu and was well worth it as we got to sample everything. The mushroom soup and the coconut curry were delicious and so were all other dishes - the betel leaf appetizer, the prawns etc. It was a Saturday evening and there was a group party going on and I felt the service was disorganized. We had read that the place is BYOB so carried a bottle of wine. One of the server told us that we cant have our wine, the other told us that it is $5 charge per person to consume and the manager told us it is $7.50 charge per person. Didnt expect that in a place that has been a Michelin star until 2022. Overall also, the service felt a bit haphazard with multiple servers working on the table and not coordinating with each other. The ambience is good and they had good soft music playing helping the ambience. Overall the experience was great and I am hoping that the service issue was one time. I will certainly recommend this place and would definitely try it again.

Great service, food and atmosphere. I've visited here twice, and I made last minutes Opentable reservations. Because of that my name was not on the reservation list, but they are very helpful to accommodate us. The food are very tasty with "Herbs" and we loved the experience. For casual Thai bites, we love visiting Ghin Khao in Pilsen, and when we want to spend a quality time sitting in a restaurant, we visit this place.
A great place for an immersive culinary experience. We loved the mixture of flavors, colors, and scents! The papaya salad, mushroom soup, and coconut curry with chicken are delicious. Very authentic and delicious food. The chef was also very kind and provided delicious plates for family members with food allergies. Overall, a great experience. Highly recommended for catering and dining with family.
The food lacked options for common dietary restrictions. However, the ease with which we were able to communicate with the staff leaves the location in possible future consideration
Fantastic meal overall. Each dish was amazing. BYOB, which isn’t posted on the door or anything, but there’s a jewel nearby if you need something last minute. Chef Patty knows what she’s doing - great spice and great flavors. Definitely recommend
Great food. Very mediocre service. They never remembered who ordered what when bringing the plates. And the worst is they include the tip hidden in the bill. Then our waiter presented a digital tablet receipt asking for another tip while hovering over me. Big pressure to tip. Did the math later and realized my mistake. Sneaky and unnecessary for an otherwise nice place.
We chanced upon this place from google search. And I am so glad we did! They have a fixed pre-tasting menu with a 5-course or a 6-course option, with an exclusive menu for vegetarian dishes. The friendliness of the staff was palpable from the time I called to make the reservation, and it only got better when we arrived at the restaurant. The ambience was good, the food was delicious, and the presentation was gorgeous. We have no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone.
Food was excellent quality but not very imaginative, just really refinements of some standard Thai dishes for the most part. Not a great value. Very expensive given the atmosphere which was pleasant but not beautiful or imaginative, and just average service.
Beware that the bill which comes on a portable credit card reader is not itemized. It includes the cost of the food and service per diner. Service fee is already calculated at about 30% of the cost of the food. There is an option to tip. I was not paying close attention. The server said the service fee was like "corkage", and implied that I really should tip, I did so, but regret that. I was tipping on a percentage basis on top of the already large service fee.
We will not be back. Our choice for really high-end Thai: Arun's.
Herb at Chicago is a Michelin guide bib gourmand restaurant with a 2 price rating. Unfortunately I did not have the best experience with the pricing and the quality of the food and service. I ordered a six course tasting menu that was priced at $75 dollars before tax. I was greeted by a plastic bottle of water at a dine in restaurant, first time happening at a Michelin recommended restaurant. The food was not particularly bad, and I do not have much insights on the ingredients. The servers were less attentive than other restaurants of this price range, but I cannot say much. In the end, I was charged with a shocking price of $98 dollars, which included 10% tax and 20% gratuity AFTER TAX that was NOT stated on the menu or by the server. In the end, I do not feel like this restaurant meets the $$ price category nor satisfy the bib gourmand tag.
They will double charge the tip on your bill if you don’t pay attention to it. The $65 tasting menu for two would end up being $210+ in total . Make sure to ask for itemized bill before paying with your card at this restaurant.
We stumbled upon this restaurant accidentally prior to a show at The Edge Theater. I have to admit, we were pleasantly surprised and grateful.
We told the staff that we were on a time crunch and they were overly accommodating!
First off, it’s BYOB. We didn’t know about that.
Second, it’s a pre-fixes tasting menu only! Which actually is great for a peace of mind no choice person. They have a meat and a vegetarian tasting menu option.
Overall, the food was delicious. Supposedly the chef won a contest for her soup, and I can see why. The overall meal was so light, flavorful and healthy. We ordered the chicken curry, which was oh my god good.
I’m definitely going to keep this on my list for great Chicago recommendations for friends and visitors. Definitely something a little unique, but those are the best gems to find.
My wife and I had the most amazing meal at herb - the staff is so polite and professional and the food is absolutely amazing. Our favorite is the Betal Leaves and Crispy Prawn, highly recommend. Wonderful food and atmosphere and BYOB! one of favorite restaurants in Chicago.
Amazing Thai restaurant with delicious, flavorful dishes! There is a preset menu and you can choose either Veg or Non-Veg or select from both menus. Cost $65. The mushroom soup, betel leaves appetizer and the Thai curry were excellent. The service was great. Reminder you need to take your own alcohol as the restaurant does not have their liquor license yet. The chef has been on the Food Network. We will be going there again!
Very nice place to go for a date or as a group. They allow you to mix and match from menu which is very nice. The staff was welcoming and friendly. I would strongly suggest to BYOB.
Great meal! Delicious food and excellent service!
Expensive and worse than your neighborhood Thai takeout. We went with a group of 6 for dinner and we agreed this was the worst experience we´ve ever had. It was a set course of 6 dishes for $75, none of which were any different than what you would get at your average spot. Green Curry, mango sticky rice, some mediocre shrimp. Portion size is also tiny, so we wen´t to Mcdonalds wen we left to finally eat. The owner came by which was very awkard as she pushed us to tell our friends about the restaurant and write a review... well here it is. Cheers!
Was here for 3 hours and got one dish out of 6. Everyone else around us had the same experience too. Had to leave and get food at a nearby place before they closed.
Absolutely fantastic! Very chic. The staff is amazing and the chef greets the table and explains each course. Delicious
WOW. Just wow. This dinner was simply incredible. Every single course was delicious and left you feeling good. The service was excellent and the chef is so warm and friendly. This is the best Thai food we’ve had in Chicago! Maybe ever! The best part is that everything was dairy-free so we could enjoy every bite. You have to go here!!
From the start the chef comes and greets you, and gets your name. The whole experience is very personal and the food is flavorful. The taste and presentation are really unique. It's definitely worth a visit.
This place is so special. Thai food gets type-cast at a certain (not too high) expectation for cost and presentation, but this is definitely fine dining. I mention that as a warning if you're distractedly scrolling in your phone to pick a "Thai place" based on neighborhood in making plans with someone. That's how I discovered Herb, but if my time/money budget had been tighter, it would have been a problem!
The food is absolutely gorgeous and delicious. You're not going to taste much better or snap much better on your cell phone camera.
What has brought me here twice (despite having discovered this place *after* having moved 1000 mi away from Chicago) is Herb's offering of a full-bore prix fixe plant-based menu in addition to an omnivorous menu. There are not a whole lot of places to really treat a vegetarian or vegan, and this is one of them.
Patty, the chef, is adorable, and on slow nights she'll improvise an omakase experience and come out and tell you about the food. She is a lovely, genuine person.
Herb is pretty quirky in some ways - BYOB, and they bring you your water in 500 mL plastic bottles from the grocery store. It's also quite affordable among the Michelin-grade eateries. If you're stuffy and trying to impress someone, that might put you off, but I personally don't care much about that kind of thing.
Herb is a gift!
One of the best meals I’ve had. The tasting menu rivaled those costing three times the price. The chef/owner was absolutely the nicest and took amazing care of us. She made the evening really special. I will absolutely be back!
The. Flavors. Are. Insane. !!!! Yes it’s a splurge but you will have your own personal chef for an evening and taste Thai like you’ve never had it.
The food was amazing. Everything was so fresh and delicious. I loved the microgreen use. The flavors of each dish were unique but complimented the next course perfectly.
The service was great. We never felt rushed to get to the next plate.
Chef Neumson was wonderful, and so kind.
This is definitely a must-visit restaurant.
Pretty food, overpriced. BYOB.
The best thai I’ve had in Chicago. Hidden gem right outside the city. Been here a dozen times. 100% recommend
If you want a special night out that is inspiring, healthy, and perfectly delicious, please don't miss this gem!! The head chef explained to us what makes her food unique - no processed foods, 10 different microgreens... We did the 5 course menu and it was soooo delicious! She is passionate about creating balance in her food and obviously cares about her staff. The space is also classy and calming like a spa. As chef says, 'treat yourself!"
The food came out fast, too!
One fantastic Thai restaurant
Best Thai food I've ever had. The art of cooking and food appreciation is truly realized here. It's so worthwhile. The courses continually amazing and surpass all expectations. Once I saw and tasted my forst dish it was no wonder to me how this special place achieved one if the best ratings a restaurant can get by winning a Michelin Star. The service from the chef was really great even while she was training new staff.
Our first time here and absolutely loved it! The 5 course meal was delicious. We could taste the freshness and flavors in every bite. The warm hospitality just made it perfect!! 5 stars for a 5 course meal.
Four of us had a dinner on Sat. night. The place is small and they had server issues (like most under Covid) but owner/chef was apologized and was fab. We had few food restrictions and she took notes and came back with new and unique dishes and we all loved it. Desert was fantastic and presentation of all dishes was perfect. Highly recommended.
They are super frivolous !!! We made a reservation a week ago on the occasion of our wedding anniversary and when we arrived the restaurant was closed without being notified that it was closing.
Dinner for 2 was $170 total ($130 for food, 20% nonoptional tip, 10% tax.)
You must bring your own drinks.
You'll be given a water bottle and they'll cork your wine for you.
My wine glass had lipstick on it. Restaurants should know to prewash the tops before loading the dishwasher.
Service was very prompt, we were seated right away, and the staff and chef were exceptionally friendly. They even gave a special gift for celebrating an occasion.
When you dine in, everyone gets the same 5-course meal.
The food was very good but not close to worth $170.
If you have been to many fine-dining restaurants you will think the flavors are good but nothing to blow your mind.
The food was warm and nothing was made hot to serve because they make a lot for many people.
Suggestions: Order takeout if you want a hot meal, a la carte. You will get to taste the chef's great flavors with more time put into your meal prepared just for you and without overpaying. With the ingredients used and flavors, the chef is definitely worth trying. I can tell that she cares about her guests.
Too expensive for what you get. 6 course meal was delicious, but not worth $75. Service was okay but far from great. Some of the items came out in the wrong order. We we're never offered any drink options other than the plastic water bottles on the table. Ambiance and presentation was very average.
Beautiful restaurant and excellent food! The owner personally greeted us and thoroughly explained the menu. Each dish was absolutely delicious and bursting with flavor. Service was prompt and friendly. Definitely will go back!
When I called to make a reservation this summer, the Chef and owner answered to my surprise. She asked about the nature of the event, our party of three couples in Chicago for a mini-college reunion, and our preferences.
Dinner was fabulous. Authentic but not traditional. Innovative cooking with layers and bursts of flavor in every bite. Price point was remarkably reasonable.
Truly an extraordinary meal with personal attention from the Chef. A night we will remember fondly.
I am not sure about all stellar reviews. Our experience took 2.5 hrs. And that is when we just left wand paid at the door. Waiting for the check would have brought it to 3 hrs. Food was bland and not so good. Portions were tiny. I just don’t get it. You can get better food in the majority of Thai places for half the price. I truly believe that this place might have once been good but not anymore. I couldn’t wait to get out. Bland and mediocre. My Thai family members cooks much better meals. Disappointed. Took just one photo because there was nothing stellar to photograph
Shambolic service. Took an hour to get just two appetizers out and they were also wrong. In between the two appetizers, a waiter came with two bowls of soup and asked us which course were we waiting for, and then left with the soup when I said "second appetizer".
The wait staff was completely disconnected from the kitchen and very unorganized. No one picked up the plates from our table till I stacked them up and placed them at the corner of the table.
I have no complains about the food though. I got the incorrect appetizer, but it was very tasty.
Worst service ever!! We were there for over an hour and were only served 2 dishes that to with gap of 25 mins. The waitress kept ignoring us and when we finally caught her attention and asked her that when will our food come she said let me check but never came back to us. Our order was served wrong. Someone sitting next to us was also served wrong food. 2 times wrong order came out for us. In the end we got fed up and said we are leaving. They just gave us the check and didn't even try to make us stop. Worst customer service. No connection between the back and front staff. They all were running away from each other. I will never go back there nor will suggest anyone else to go there
2 people for 55 dollars, menu is 5 course dinner, fancy dishes.
Amazing Food and Service. The beef salad and stir fry was the best I have ever eaten. The chef was kind enough to personalize some of the dishes for us. Everything from service, food and ambiance was AWESOME
Amazing service and food, I soooo love this restaurant! Get the betel leaves and prawn appetizer and famous chicken curry! It is BOYB so bring a bottle of white!
BYOB! Delicious prefix meals ($55 each) including plant based options! Accommodated our parties allergies & chef came to our table twice. Amazing food (so much flavor!) Incredibly tender meat (I had pork and beef) and over all a total pleasure. Love this woman owned and operated spot, will be back!!
The quality and value of this top-level five-course meal simply cannot be beat. I've returned multiple times and have been impressed each time. The service is impeccable. This is a great place to show off to out of town guests.
Wow. Brought my father and my girlfriend’s father here for Father’s Day dinner last night, and what an amazing experience. Not your « typical » fine dining experience, just amazingly fresh ingredients that each play their own little part on the plate, and one of a kind flavors that my dad said he’s only ever tasted in Thailand. Amazing experience overall, bravo chef.
The food was incredible. It's been two days since we ate there and we have not stopped talking about that meal. We got one vegan pri fixe menu and one non vegan and everything was amazing. The turmeric trio mushroom soup was my favorite closely followed by the betel leaves appetizer. Don't forget that it is byob so plan on carrying some beverages. The service was slower but we didn't mind it at all because once the first course was served everything came out very fast. I cannot recommend this place enough.
Had the five course meal. Mushroom soup was phenomenal. Overall, the food was very tasty and demonstrated meaningful range over five courses. BYOB complimented the tasting process. Service needs some work. Clocked out after over 2 hours and 15 minutes - the dining experience was way too long. Took over 20 minutes to get dessert. Had to flag someone down to get the check. Didn’t replace utensils. Wine chilling would be a plus. Lastly, would be good to put some work into the interior and appearance of the menu.
We had a 5 course menu to celebrate graduation of my fiancé. The food was exceptional. We were 4 of us, two of us ordered the plant based menu and two of us ordered the non-plant based menu. Chef Patti even came out to talk to us. The staff were super friendly, very helpful and very courteous. The mushroom soup, and betel leaves really blew us away. All other dishes were amazing too. For dessert, I had the sticky rice and mangoes and I was taken aback (in a good way) at the simplicity and deliciousness of the dish. It’s hard to pick good mangoes in the US, but the mangoes we had were of the top most quality and taste, they took us back to our memories of mangoes in India.
Would highly recommend this place to everyone. Exceptional food for very reasonable prices.
Thank you for making our special occasion very memorable
One of the best Thai food we ever had. Right from the presentation to taste everything is immaculate. As the name says food is flavorful. Chef Patty is awesome, she's greets you and explains the menu. We even got an autographed menu as a souvenir. We started with Betel leaves which is a must order. After that the Turmeric Trio mushroom soup tastes so fresh and delicious. For the main course we ordered Thai coconut curry with chicken and the Holly Basil. And as we all know No Thai food is complete without the sticky rice with Mango. It's a BYOB. We are ready to go again. Thanks chef Patty for a wonderful experience..
Might be the best Thai Curry I’ve ever had. Loved this experience.
Absolutely a gem in this neighborhood. The presentation is spot on and the food are delicious. I enjoyed every bite till the end. I loved the desert with rice and mango! Patty is a genius. And thank you Ksun for your hospitality.
Love those betel leaves appetizers. Wasn't a big fan of the dessert, but overall everything tasted delicious 😋
I’ve been on the quest to find someplace worthy of being dubbed my favorite Thai place since I first came to Chicago 7 long years ago. I am happy to report that Herb has won that title. Although it was a take out order, it was some of the finest plating I have seen, and the food only got better from there. Flavors were fresh and thoughtfully spiced. An absolute 10/10. Patty’s culinary skills made me cry tears of joy as I savored each bite. Each dish takes you on a journey. I cannot wait to go back and continue to explore the expertly curated menu.
Long live the ultimate spice queen!
This place is perfect to taste thai food. It was our first time and the experience was amazing. We were attended directly by chef Patty and her recommendations were very very good. We tried the 5 course prix fixe service and it was delicious, perfect for trying a little of everything. Very good service and it's BOYB !!!
Great place...nice food...highly recommended.
Love this place and can’t wait for it to reopen.
Must try in the city. Thai on another level.
Thai cuisine taking to the nth degree.
This review is written after visiting the Herb 3 times. The menu is creative, modern and palette appealing. 2 out of 3 times the device was quite lacking, but one of the time we had a large group of people, while another time it was during the valentines weekend.
It is definitely worth the trial and with a good company, you don’t mind the wait.
Went with the 3 course prix fixe. All the dishes were good, but the fish was outstanding.
Absolutely delicious, artfully displayed food, with a creative menu, we met the chef/ owner and she couldnt have been friendlier. Unfortunately the service waa painfully slow and utterly disorganized. Hope they can hire a good manager, because this place has so much potential.
Always very a great experience. BYOB. Works great with Champagne, German and Alsatian rieslings. Light reds, lighter pinot noir. Chef is always engaging, loves her food and it shows in the quality.
The food was amazing, especially the soups!
Winter menu...a delightful experience..
The dinning experience was amazing. The food is amazing. Please go to this restaurant. If you're into Thai food and fine dining, this is worth it!!!
Very delicious food and great service. The owner took the time to explain the concept behind the name of the restaurant and how each course was prepared. This is not your ordinary Thai restaurant. The food is very carefully prepared and the flavors of each course leave you wanting some more. Very healthy and good for you food. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Herb is a gem. Worth visiting no matter what.
Chef Patty reigns supreme as the Thai spice queen. She was such a delight to meet and her cooking is as good as rumoured.
We came in for the 5 course prix fixe.
Each dish was masterfully seasoned and cooked. Some standouts were the Crispy Fizzy Prawn, Betel Leaves, the Seafood Soup, and the Chefs Whim Desserts.
Do yourself and your taste buds a huge favour and check it out ASAP.
Hidden gem! Highly recommend both soups.
Consistently fantastic dining by an innovative and sophisticated chef! A must try for serious foodies!
Excellent food and the owner is fun and personable! Comparable to food actually from Thailand!
This place is definitely an experience - this is not your average Thai food place. Expect to spend at least 2 hours here. They bring out each dish slowly and give you lots of time to enjoy it. Each bite was different and so complex in flavor. They're not award winning for nothing! Definitely take advantage of their recommendations and go for the 5 course - so worth it. The tea is a great deal too.
Really great meal/experience at Herb. It’s clear that they care deeply about the quality of the ingredients they use - that’s what sets them apart. Everything was delicious and the service was great. Can’t wait to try their fall menu!
We really liked the dishes for our 5 course prefixe dinner. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful.
This is by far the best Thai food in Chicago let alone the United States. Patty is an unbelievable chief who you will see on TV many times in the future, she's already been on twice and won both times. She has a set menu, either 3 or 5 courses, that changes with the seasons but everything is always fresh, organic, and taste fantastic. We have brought many people to Herb from out of town and most go back again before going home! If the restaurant was in Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast you would have to wait 6 months before getting in but because it's in Edgewater you can usually get a reservation a week in advance. This is one of the best restaurants in all of Chicago and reminds my friend and I of the best Thai food restaurants in Bangkok.
Food is very good. Fresh and interesting. But it’s Thai food. Thai is meant to be shared. Often it is like street food. This place is way more pretentious and the portions are rather small. Delicious and worth the experience. But it’s a one off destination for me.
Tasty upscale foods and services.
Herb is quaint, comfortable, polished. The owner, Patty, makes every thing with care and love, and it shows. This is Thai food elevated to the next level but still being very approachable. The five course prix fixe experience is the way to go allowing you to sample a range of dishes. The changing menu is always fresh with lots of textures and flavors. The food is not spicy but delicate and complex with a balance of ingredients. If your really spice adverse, tell the server and they’ll make sure to adjust the menu/flavors for your palate.
Vegetarian friendly
BYOB
This restaurant is amazing we had a group of 20 .Food ,staff , and atmosphere everything was great !
Amazing refined Thai flavors. Chef Patty never disappoints, whether it's vegetarian, beef or chicken. It's affordable prix fixe, especially considering the quality of the food, and you're already saving since it's BYOB.
Food is wonderful, although pricey. The service was a bit hit and miss. When they were there, they were very good. But they weren't always around, big time. If you have all the time in the world, no problem. Worth the visit. Get a reservation and expect to spend the evening.
It’s the Alinea of Thai in uptown - fresh clean ingredients, fantastic service, delicious combinations.
thai food at this spot - super good. Stopped in on a Tuesday. Looking forward to coming back with my relatives. The place has a nice atmosphere.
Omg, excellent in all areas!! We ordered from the pixie menu and shared which is the best way to enjoy a number of their dishes. The staff was just awsome in explaining each dish and how best to eat some of them. Oh! Each dish is individually cooked which lends to all the good fresh, spiced just right taste you get with each bite. This space is great for couples and groups. It is BYOD but if you forget their teas are good. This is on our go again list so we can try the new dishes they serve each season.
Excellent food
Simple yet very flavorful chicken and rice. I would recommend for anyone who needs a quick healthy bite, but also tasteful route. Their peanut/ginger sauce is so amazing, I would recommend it to anyone. The price is really good too and they're fast with their orders.
It's hard to pick which dish is best, you just have to try them all!!
Fine Thai dining in a super cute store front setting. Love the 5 course dinner option. All the best selected for you.
Awesome. The food and service was out of this world!
Fresh food, good service, staff excited to share history of specific dishes.
If you are thinking standard Thai food, you are definitely mistaken about Herb. The chef / part owner came out to greet us and walk us through the pre fix menu. She helped us with recommendations and what food goes well together. I had the crispy tofu for my appetizers and others had the shrimp. The crispy tofu was phenomenal. Had a taste of the bettal leaf. Very good. Next was the mushroom soup. Amazing look and flavor. Below is after they poured the soup in. I had the chicken for the entre while others had the fish (pictures below). It was flavorful but definitely not as good as previous two courses. Definitely a place with great good and friendly service. Would go before it gets too popular and you have to make reservations months in advance.
I took my wife here for her birthday, it was our first time visiting Herb. We went in a Thursday night, so the restaurant was quiet with a few other patrons. The atmosphere was nice, elegant, and peaceful. We were seated right away and shortly after the hostess brought an ice bucket for the bottle of wine we brought with us, as we had heard the restaurant was BYOB.
Our hostess described how the prix fixe menu worked, the different dishes, and which options were recommended. We were very excited for the higher quality, higher concept Thai cuisine, and went with the 5 course options so that we could sample more dishes. We were also given the betel leaves starter in addition to our orders as a gesture from the restaurant, on the house. From the moment the betel leaves came out a few minutes later, everything we tasted was very delicious.
We are fans of spicy food, so we confirmed to the hostess when asked that we were happy to have our dishes made at a moderate spice/heat level. The spiciness was just right; each spicy dish had enjoyable heat but also allowed you to taste the flavors and ingredients.
Starters, soups, entrees, and desserts came out at good intervals; small waits in between so that we didn't feel rushed but we also weren't waiting long. It provided a relaxing experience to eat, talk, and simply enjoy our time in the restaurant.
Pricing was fair and well worth the culinary experience. The menu changes seasonally, so there are incentives to return and try new dishes. I'm a happy customer and plan to visit again.
Best Thai restaurant I've been to.
Great food. Unique flavors.
My wife and I tried going here for our anniversary. We were seated at 5:30. We left at 6:45 because we still hadn't been brought our soup (nevermind our entrees), and hadn't even seen our waiter in the last hour.
The food might be good, but they would have had to actually serve it for us to find out.
Nah didn't work for me. Attempting to fix what ain't broke. Sent back "inventive" dumplings.
I can't say enough good things about this place. Chef Patti and her team are kind, welcoming and serve creative dishes that are delicious. I love Herb and try to eat there at least four times a year so I can enjoy each seasonal menu they offer.
Exceptional, the best Thai food experience ever. I loved the atmosphere and staff.
Truthfully I was debating between 3 and 4 stars for this review. Herb has a neat 3 or 5 course menu option which left me somewhat unimpressed but overall satisfied. The staff didn’t seem to know what was being served or who at the table had what. For all 5 courses they asked our table where the dishes should be placed, and with a fixed menu we didn’t know either so it was pretty awkward. The food was good but was not memorable.
Wow! The service was solid, but the food was outstanding! I am coming back.
