Established in 2022, Kothai Republic is a San Francisco-based culinary gem that seamlessly blends Californian flair with modern Asian cuisine. By day, indulge in their delectable brunch offerings, hailed as one of the city's finest. As night falls, embark on a tantalizing culinary adventure with their inventive Asian creations, sure to captivate your palate with every bite.
Phenomenal food and a chef whose passion for cooking is evident in every dish. The care and attention to quality ingredients shine through, and it’s clear he truly loves his craft. You can feel the joy he takes in seeing others enjoy his creations as much as he enjoys making them. This hidden gem has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants, and a month later, I’m still dreaming about the ceviche I had in August.
My only complaint? It’s not located closer to where I live.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to any of my friends.
Kothai Republic has amazing food with a friendly, low-key atmosphere that makes for a great evening. Everything we ate was fantastic, particularly the kimchi rice balls, chicken liver mousse, and Crying Tiger beef tartare. And while I was initially unsure if it would be a good place to get dessert, I’m so glad we ordered the apple cheesecake that was to die for! One of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. My only critique would be that the kitchen is totally open to the dining area which means big, bright white light takes away a bit from the ambiance. I was originally sat up against the kitchen area and requested to move because it felt too frantic and not great for a cozy dinner. Otherwise, the service was friendly and I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to try innovative, delicious Asian fusion!
We had kimchi rice balls, pork chop steak and yuju drink.
Perfect mood with candles, kind servers, gorgeous plates. Every single ingredients were delicately cooked to have rich flavor.
Pork chop was so soft and smokey. Most of all, the restaurant's owner served us a dongchimi, which is korean traditional pickle, and will be on the menu soon. It is absolutely genuine stuff, must-try.
You could think this place is little bit pricy, but it does worth more than what you're expecting.
Please visit this place and enjoy!
Delicious fusion using fresh ingredients — familiar and new tastes to create a sumptuous dining experience. The 3 of us loved the kim chi rice balls, mushroom appetizer, curry Cornish hen, salmon, and bimbimbap. Yum! And we had leftovers to wake home. Great service and fun neighborhood location.
Came for brunch and thought it was cute and tasty! We came here around opening time on a Saturday and there was no line and plenty of seating.
I don’t think this place will beat out a no frills place that just does brunch items well but for a fusion-y, themed brunch place I think it’s definitely one of the top ones in the city.
I got the sando Benedict and my husband got the rancheros. I definitely thought mine was the better of the two and he somewhat agreed.
Came here for brunch and it wasn't full at all on Sunday at 10 am!
Good:
- Food was really pretty when it was plated
- Prices are typical SF but not expensive either!
- Big fan of how unique the eggs benedict here was - it's not just a egg on a biscuit, there's a bowl with an egg in it and the sauce and a separate sandwich
- Good portion sizing
- French toast was great and not too sweet too!
Bad:
- Was a bit hard to flag down the waiters so it took a while for food to get here too
Overall:
This place was a cute find, good aesthetics and feels like it's really getting popular these days!
Decided to give this place a try after their Instagram influencer ad grabbed my attention. I didn’t know what to expect as it could be hit or miss when it comes to influencer stuff but this place def as good ( if not better) than what I saw and expected.
We loved every dishes we ordered. We love how the dishes are nicely displayed- good for the eyes, and taste good too!
The plus is that it’s so easy to get to given that the N Judah muni bus stop is right there.
As someone lived in the sunset for years long long time ago I also appreciate the owner for gentrifying this spots. I remember this spot used to be a flow/ bakery store. So nice to add new flavor profile like Kothai to the landmark.
Extraordinary food and service - will be a difficult table to reserve in the future
The food was amazing, we had the tuna tartare, kimchi rice balls, pork chop, mushroom medley, and the squash appetizer. We loved every dish! The service is great and the restaurant is family friendly. We’ll be back soon.
Delicious food and great atmosphere. We come here often and are never disappointed. I also love that the restaurant isn't too loud.
The ambiance and the service were both charming and delightful. The kimchi riceballs were pretty good, it helps that they were fried and serviced with aioli. The Cornish hen was good, but the king salmon didn’t taste good to either of us. It was advertised as a bit funky which is fair but when I tried it I didn’t even like that I could keep tasting it afterward. I wanted to eat something else to get the taste out of my mouth.
Came here for brunch and it did not disappoint. Their friech chicken sandwich was delicious. The French toast with shrimp was our favorite.
I do recommend arriving before they open.
We were looking forward to the dining experience as we heard really good reviews. It didn't disappoint. We enjoyed the family style dinner. The food was delicious. We will return. We only wish we didn't have to wait for that long for the dishes.
Truly excellent meal and experience at Kothai Republic last night. The thought and care that goes into your food and service made this a special meal for us.
We had kimchi rice balls, pork chop steak and yuju drink.

We shared the Rose Toast & 1398 Rancheros. Totally amazing flavors!!! Would recommend 👍
This restaurant is a hidden gem with phenomenal food that showcases a chef’s undeniable passion for cooking. Every dish reflects a dedication to quality ingredients and meticulous care, which is evident in the flavors and presentation. It’s clear that the chef truly loves his craft, and you can see the joy in his eyes as he watches others enjoy his creations.
One particular standout was the ceviche I had in August—simply divine. Even a month later, I’m still dreaming about it. The freshness of the seafood, the perfect balance of flavors, and the skillful execution made it one of the best ceviches I’ve ever tasted.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to any of my friends or anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience. This place has quickly become one of my favorite spots, and I’m already planning my next visit.
The service was a bit slow and I found the food a bit overpriced
A first visit for my wife and I. We had a great dining experience. Everybody was friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent, top quality ingredients and delicious. The entire team and chef all contributed to a great experience! We will be back again soon!!
Absolutely incredible food, really good service, and nice atmosphere - a small neighborhood gem that's worth going out of your way for! Run by an incredibly gracious and immensely talented husband and wife duo: our whole experience was wonderful, and I can't wait to return for another delicious meal.
Just had the best meal under $200 for two people. We were able to snag a walk in and will definitely be back. The game hen was amazing but everything we had was delicious. Get the hamachi collar. We will definitely be going back.

I don’t say this lightly, but I think Kothai may have the best breakfast in San Francisco. Highly recommend the Sandi Benedict and the kfc sandwich.
Yummmmy!
Solid 4
We really enjoyed our first dining experience at kothai! Looking forward to our next reservation coming up soon. I really enjoyed all the small plates. Lots of vegetarian options. And options to make things less spicy! The desserts are great too!
Wish I could write a rave post and post it again. We hosted a work lunch here for a private event and it was amazing. The team was so thrilled with the quality of the food, including one of the best salads I've ever had, and the service was also top notch. Highly recommend for meals with large groups.
One of the best restaurants in the sunset district. Super experimental and well thought-out dishes, and the service is 10/10. Has a slightly upscale vibe but feels casual and not too stuffy at the same time. Couldn’t recommend enough!
I've been here three times in three weeks trying out the various items on their menu, and it has never disappointed. The star dishes are the noodle soups for sure, with both the beef noodle and tomyum being very different but very delicious. Chef Sung was also gracious enough to come to the front of house and answer a few questions, which was great.
A very, very good addition to the Inner Sunset. I wish it success!

As a 5-Star Food Influencer, this is an amazing place. Excellent.
God bless you.
My fav restaurant in sf so far. Every dish is unique. Ordered 5-6 dishes for two people and the lamb and chicken liver were fantastic. “Didn’t know chicken liver could taste this good 🤣”
Interesting asian fusion cuisine

Kothai is easily one of the best restaurants in the city, both for brunch and dinner! It’s a nice, casual neighborhood spot… then comes the food. How is there not a line out the door at all hours? It belongs on every “best of the city” list. Brown butter hollandaise, are you kidding me?? The French toast is out of this world. You think you’ve had French toast before? You haven’t. I’ve been many times and am always dreaming about something I ate. They put new things on the menu all the time, making it exciting to try again and again. Great for date night, family gatherings, and friend meetups.
This place is a hidden gem! The coconut mascarpone is incredible, never tried such a delicious cream in my life! Delicious for both dinner and breakfast, we kept coming back! Dava one of the owners is so attentive and recommended great dishes for our taste! Highly recommend! thank you Dava and KoThai team!
Favourite place in SF!♥️♥️♥️ thank you Dava!
My husband and I love Kothai Republic, it is one of our most favorite Restaurants in the Bay Area. Not only is the food absolutely amazing and keeps growing with exciting new flavours but the owner and staff make you feel special and really being taking care of. We would give 6 stars if possible:-)
Excellent food and service- highly recommended. Some of the best Korean I've had.
What a great find in the sunset!
Excellent food, great balance and flavors and so beautifully presented. Really creative dishes that showcase a mix of culinary techniques.
Of the dishes we tried, the favs were:
King salmon Haw Mok - such tender, likely sous vide salmon wrapped beautifully with cabbage leaves on a deliciously aromatic and rich curry sauce. Perfect to sop up with the rice.
Monterey squid - squid done right! So tender and slightly chewy, and paired so well with the different textures of toothsome big butter beans and bursting flavor of cherry tomatoes.
Pork jowl spicy noodles - also great, good cold dish surprisingly, with the cabbage slaw mixed in and soba as the choice noodle instead of something chewy.
Decided to give this place a try after their Instagram influencer ad grabbed my attention. I didn’t know what to expect as it could be hit or miss when it comes to influencer stuff but this place def as good ( if not better) than what I saw and expected.

Came by on a quiet wed evening . Recommend the kimchi balls and the pork ribs. The flavors are stupendous⭐️. The cold Korean noodles was interesting. The quality of ingredients is first class. Also tried their new cocktails on the menu which was a bit sweet for my taste palate but quite refreshing. I’d definitely go back to try other items on their menu.
The servers were sweet and attentive. I am glad I didn’t go on a busy evening.
We were really impressed with the food here! We got the kimchi balls, the ceviche, Korean spicy noodles, and salmon green curry. The ceviche was AMAZING, and we’d definitely come back for the Korean spicy noodles. Great Korean Thai fusion spot in the inner sunset- check it out!
Really great selection of brunch foods. Definitely get their custard French toast! It’s super popular so be prepared to wait if you’re going on the weekend.
Amazing brunch! We had the French toast and the Sando Benedict- both exceptional. The serving size was generous. The details and flavors- wow! And no wait (at least yet, I am sure that will change once this place is ‘discovered’). The staff were friendly and service was great. We will be back!
Man!! It’s hard to find places that makes me go “WOW”! This is one of those places.
One of my favorite dishes was the Salmon in green curry. There was not one dish we didn’t like(kimchi rice balls, ceviche, spicy Korean noodles, Tom ka, ribeye tartar with plums and the chocolate mousse). These folks are pouring their hearts into the food and we are lucky to have been turned onto this place. It’s so damnd good!!
One of the best restaurants in the Sunset & the city. Portions are generous & I’ve never had a dish I didn’t like here. Korean spicy noodle is my favorite, mainly for all the pork jowl 😛
Top quality ingredients. Unique recipes. Excellent customer service. Keep it up Kothai! we are so impressed and happy with this spot. we keep coming back for more and they always find a way to keep it interesting with the change in menu. they also have brunch!
We came for dinner the other night, they were able to seat us right away. I didn’t have much expectations but their Bibimbap and Korean spicy noodle was the best I’ve had.
It was well seasoned with complex flavor profile. One of the best meals we’ve had on our trip to San Francisco.
Best Asian food in San Francisco! One of the best in the US!
Great food and service. The stand out being the Cornish hen. Crispy crust on the skin but super juicy and flavorful on the inside.
Ended up here for Mother's Day brunch. It was really good.
Prices are too high for this kind of venue. Food is ok but not for the price. Dishes are small. Not great experience overall
I love Kothai. The waiters are very friendly and the food does not disappoint. If you’re looking to branch out and try new foods Kothai is the place for you! I would say it’s one of the best restraints in SF and also really love their brunch. Chef was so kind and came to talk to our table about our experience. Please support this small business!
This place has everything positive. Food, wine/beer, service. Guaranteed delicious :--)
One of my top restaurants I’ve tried this year by far - all around one of the best experiences and meals I’ve had. The pork jowl in the spicy noodle is phenomenally cooked but each dish is made with so much thought and care. I personally really enjoyed the apple cheesecake, sea bream crude and Korean spicy noodles!
I would highly recommend going brunch or dinner (you can’t go wrong with either)! Definitely a place I would bring amd recommend to anyone visiting sf
EDIT: i’ve come back here plenty of times and their food and service is always consistent! They source their produce locally and seasonally which is a plus. Their new dishes (pork belly croquettes, red curry cornish hen, sweet and sour pork) are innovative and some of the best dishes I’ve had in a long time.
Kothai is such a great restaurant! The chef is innovative and always creating new delicious plates. The service is very warm and attentive. A neighborhood hub.
Go now for brunch before it blows up!!!
Omg not only are their brunch items so aesthetically beautiful they are DELISH!!!
We had the fluffy cakes, the Benedict Sando, and the 1398 Rancheros. The Benedict Sando was deconstructed- sandwich and then a dish of delicious poached eggs in mustardy hollandaise sauce. Wow!! The bulgogi on the rancheros was delicious and sooo flavorful, and spiced very mildly- not too spicy at all. The fluffy cakes stole the show. I even used a few of the dry cakes to sop up my Benedict sauce. Yum yum yum!!!!
Also service was great, not slow at all, and super attentive. They ran out of the Thai iced tea and replaced it immediately with another beverage. Very thoughtful.
The brunch is amazing. Each dish is wildly delicious and delights with unexpected details and refinement (read: the food is so fancy looking). When I do brunch (which is often) I rarely get pancakes because I’m always thinking “I can do better at home”. Kothai’s fluffy cakes are inspired and I couldn’t do that at home with decades of practice. The rose toast is the must order, though, if you are into a seafood Benedict.
five stars is not enough!! it's a heaven for gourmands! must try in San Francisco.
We had the squid. I've never experienced food that was so clearly five stars.
Came here for brunch and it wasn't full at all on Sunday at 10 am!

Must try restaurant. The variations on Thai and Korean food work so well and all 7 dishes we got were super tasty and fun. Highly recommend the Kim chee rice balls, Korean spicy noodles, and sweet and sour ribs.
The service was super friendly and the vibe is perfect: neighborhood spot but a bit elevated. If I lived in this neighborhood I would visit it weekly for sure!
Must try!! I love this restaurant! Amazing food, lovely ambience, great service and staff :) every time I come here I always have a good time. Thank you to Sung and everyone at Kothai for a great birthday dinner!! Bonus - its right on the N haha ❤️
Sung is the best, thanks for the best hospitality and amazing food!
Great food and ambiance. The staff was really nice and accommodating as soon as we stepped in. I was able to try their kimchi rice balls, roasted delicata, slow shrooms and the jung hul kalbi. Everything was delicious but my two favorites were the slow shrooms and the jung hul kalbi. All the dishes were plated very nicely and I felt like I was eating fine dining! The food was fresh and perfectly seasoned. I'm planning to stop by often because the menu changes periodically so there's always something new to try. I hear they also have a killer brunch!
Amazing brunch spot...fantastic addition to this part of the City
I came for brunch (Fri-Sun 9am-2pm). The crispy potatoes are phenomenal. I liked the Rose Toast ($21) that I ordered—would recommend it over the Breakfast Combo ($25). Their Really Custardy French Toast, the most popular brunch item per the waitress, had sold out by the time I arrived at 1:15pm on a Friday.
Truthfully, not super impressed by the food. The menu is nice and simple but I guess I was expecting more?
We got the bibimbap which was okay and have had better. We also got the braised Thai chicken which was severely disappointing and dry. The service was pretty phenomenal and the ambiance was nice as we had a cool view into the kitchen. Overall, I probably would not come back but will give 4 star review for the efforts.
It was my first time here at Kothai! I had a very good experience with both food and service, honestly everything!! The ambiance was also great; very comfy and chill! We ordered 4 dishes and they were all so delicious!! I am not a French toast person in general but the French toast here, which is apparently the most popular dish and it is a must-try dish, was soooo yummy!!! Crispy from the outside but soft and tasty on the inside. Highly recommended if you have not tried them yet :) B&E was also very yummy and tasty; the thicken bacon was soooo glazy and yummy I am down for that dish the next time I am here too! The service is awesome! Both chefs are also very friendly and checked in with every table seated whether everything was okay. They are so down to earth and friendly! We will come back for more!!!
Really really good brunch food. Very interesting versions of standard American breakfast food. But very very different. Since it was Sunday we were able to street park for free around the corner. I guess we got lucky.
This was the best brunch I’ve had in a long time! Food was absolutely delicious.
Great food, great service, great prices. Neighborhood gem!
My favourite place in SF! Great food, fast service, and a convenient spot.
Incredibly delicious food. Got two shareable plates and the beef noodle soup and that was the perfect amount of food. For dessert the apple cheesecake is a must!
Delightful experience. Enjoyed the food and the service was very considerate of food allergies.
Went here for a big group dinner, and the food was amazing. The chef was an incredibly gracious host. I really enjoyed this place. I look forward to coming back.
Some of the most memorable hospitality I’ve had in a long time - so friendly and the elevated dishes are super unique. This place is special!! Will be coming back
Kothai is Asian fusion restaurant (Korean/Thai) with a modern take on all dishes. We opted for the fish/seafood options which were all pretty good but not outstanding.
The salmon green curry was the highlight and I would definitely order it again. The sea bream crudo with the spicy mango sauce and the hamachi collar was pretty good (collar didn’t taste the freshest though). Kimchi rice balls could have been crispier and had a strange sweetness. Mushrooms were good but the combination with coconut wasn’t anything noteworthy.
The decor is pretty simple and prices are reasonable. Service was quick and friendly.
Wow! Finally tried our new neighborhood restaurant, so glad we did. Can’t wait to go back. We started with the hamachi collar, which is amazing. Then the sea bream crudo…excellent. The shrimp ceviche was really nice, although a bit high on the spice. Last we hade the chicken toast, very good…but would have loved a few more of those pickle onions for the balance. The micro greens, especially the little baby cilantro, were a fantastic touch!
Kothai rocks and is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Everything was fresh, well plated and bursting with flavor (the hamachi collar and prosciutto melon were particular favorites). The local sake was also a nice treat. The service was extremely friendly, the space is light and airy and the price point was reasonable. I’ll definitely be back soon!
Yummy
Exceptional in every way. Amazing apps and entrees - thoughtful, interesting. Envelope pushing. A little more spicy, a little more tart, a little more delicious. Really amazing.
I highly recommend Kothai- excellent food, friendly owners, excellent service. Will be returning. What a great addition to the neighborhood.
This place is absolutely amazing. The combination of Thai and Korean flavors is something I never knew I needed until I tried their dishes. Personally, I can't get enough of their Korean spicy noodle with that melt-in-your-mouth pork jowl. And let's not forget the delicious Kimchi rice ball and KoThai Ceviche - so flavorful! The Grilled Hamachi Collar is another must-try item on their menu.
I really love about this place is the cozy minimalistic atmosphere. It adds to the overall dining experience and makes me feel right at home. And about the staff, They are incredibly friendly and always make us feel welcome. It's the perfect combination of great food, cozy atmosphere, and amazing service. I can't recommend it enough!
Consistent great food and great service. Highly recommended.
So happy this place opened up! Food was delicious. We got the chicken toast, hamachi, kimchi rice balls, Kobe beef, spicy Korean noodles, and heirloom salad. The staff were so nice too. It was our friend’s birthday and they brought us a delicious apple cheesecake and a bottle of sake to go since we had been ordering it all night. So sweet!
The chef/owner and all of the staff at this lovely restaurant are warm and friendly. The food is delicious and fairly priced. You will leave satisfied and eager to return. The green curry and kimchi balls are fantastic!!
Heard really good things about the restaurant, and went for weekend lunch. No wait. Service was attentive, and really appreciate the constant water refills!
The food was delicious!!! We weren't too hungry so only ordered two items - both fish dishes.
Started with the Grilled Hamachi Collar, and I can't recommend this enough. Meaty collar meat paired with a spicy-tangy breadcrumb knocked it out. It was a pretty large appetizer, with veggies too. Really set the stage for the meal.
We shared the King Salmon Hak Maw. Salmon was perfectly cooked, wrapped in cabbage. Sitting in a sauce of green curry, perfect for eating with a bowl of rice.
I wish there were more vegetarian options but I can't wait to come back to try more. Highly recommend!
This is a perfect small trendy restaurant on your corner. Reminds me of ny. Food is carefully crafted and the staff are diligently servicing. It's a bright place with large windows so you feel the vibrant city outside the restaurant. The only complaint was that their spicy is surprisingly not spicy. Favorite was ceviche but the cold noodles, you can skip. Ceviche had the most interesting flavor profile and it just had a very fresh seafood opening with a fantastic citrus note finished with a little bit of bitter green that cleaned your palette. Seabeam was also good with nice clean mango sauce that you can really enjoy the mild flavor of seabeam. Lovely flavor combination. Bibimbob was surprisingly good with a very pretty presentation and perfectly cooked veggies. They give you extra sauce so don't put it all in at once. Tom Yum noodle soup was packed with great flavors and perfectly cooked crispy pork and egg. Though for my taste, can be a little less salty. Jowl was good but the noodles were meh. Lacking in flavor for me. Their drinks (non-alcoholic) looked pretty too but we got hot tea instead. Idk how often their menu changes, but def worth checking it out. Was around $40 per person but with drinks would be more. Worth the price tags. We had a giant stroller so they kindly kept it on the back for us. But don't recommend going there with a stroller. Overall food was very pretty and had great flavors that were carefully crafted.
All the food in Kothai is delicious, but I think Tomyam is the best! I couldn't say hello because I was in a hurry to come out, but my mom told me that Kimchi was also the best! It was a delicious family meal. I love this place:)
Totally worth the hype. They nail the fusion and all the dishes are spectacular. The ceviche has a kick and the Korean spicy noodles, in particular the grilled pork jowl were out of this world.
Absolutely underrated gem, can't wait to go back
Awesome place with very creative dishes! Hamachi collar and salmon were incredible, heirloom tomatoes were very fresh, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend!
Food: 10 Ambience: 10 Service: 10. When you walk into Kothai, you are entering a full San Francisco Sunset experience, with food that’s seasonal, flavored and unique with a feeling of being at home with family. Come once to Kothai and it won’t be the last one.
Food was good, service was good, but I don't like eating in a cold draft. With the window open, my food was cold within seconds of arriving at the table because of the draft. I should have said something, but didn't.
I’ve been here five times and counting. This is exceedingly rare for me!! I usually get tired of restaurants by the third time. I love that they update their menu every once in a while. Most things I’ve tried have been bangerzz.
I’m a big fan of their tom yum soup (despite being terrible with spice, I think the soup tastes the most balanced at the regular spice level which to me is very spicy haha) and grilled hamachi collar. I was blown away by the pork jowl (the fat was perfectly rendered mmmm) that came with the korean spicy noodles. My friends and I were a bit disappointed that it was a cold dish.
The owner really values customer service and it shows through their servers. They take the time to explain in detail what each dish is so that you can be confident in your order. It’s no wonder why this restaurant is thriving. I can’t help but feel proud :)
The favorite restaurant that I’ve been to in a while! You get delicious high quality food with reasonable price. The owner is extremely friendly and fun to have a conversation with. It feels like coming to a friend’s restaurant! The ambiance is great for a fun and yummy date night or night with friends to enjoy conversations!
Fabulous, family owned, reasonably priced.⁰😍
It was a Tuesday night and we just finished a movie at the cinemas. Found this place online and we're so glad that we went. Didn't have to wait once we got there since they had a couple of tables open for 2. We got the beef noodle soup and korean spicy noodles. Flavors on everything were spot on. It is a little pricey, tho, but so worth it. The servers are also attentive. One of the best places we've gone to. 5 stars all around.
Just left the place and had to write this immediately: I am not sure I am more impressed with the quality of food and all of the delicious flavors, or the friendliest and most attentive group of folks that work there. Can’t wait to be back soon!
I have eaten in Thai and Thai Fusion restaurants in Florida and in Newport Beach and San Diego, CA. Kothai Republic supercedes all of the others by far! The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were generous. We all look forward to our next meal at Kothai Republic.
Every dish we got was really flavorful and delicious. The chefs do a great job of combining lots of ingredients to create complex flavors and they seem to really take their time with each dish. Wait staff was super kind and friendly too!
Kothai is a fantastic addition to Inner Sunset! Delicious food with gorgeous plating, friendly and thoughtful service and a simple space with many thoughtful details.
When we commented positively about one of the plates- the heirloom tomato salad, the chef explained how he changes the dressing as the season progresses to balance the sweetness of the tomatoes. Now that’s attention to detail!!
Ordered the Korean Spicy Noodle w/ Pork Jowl and Hamachi Kama
Food: 3.5/5 - Thoughtful dishes, but the flavor and taste didn’t wow me. The Kama was nice, but could use more flavor. It came with sauce to dip in.
Value: 3.5/5
Service: 5/5 - Friendly staff and attentive
Ambiance: 5/5 - Cute place
I was intrigued by the unique and concise menu at KoThai Republic, a Korean and Thai fusion restaurant in the Inner Sunset of San Francisco. The owners Sung Park and Gof Sanguanwong previously ran a food truck Spork and Stix, and this is their first brick and mortar restaurant.
The weekend menu is the same for both brunch and dinner - a vibrant mix of sharable small plates and comforting rice and noodle dishes. There were dishes that you may expect from KoThai’s name, like bibimbap and tom yum noodle soup. I was also excited to see other influences, like an impressively flavorful Taiwanese beef noodle soup with a base made from scratch.
Some of the more fusion dishes included kimchi fried rice balls - a nod to Italian arancini, but with kimchi, bacon, cheddar filling. The KoThai ceviche was Park’s more accessible spin on traditional gejang, or Korean marinated raw crab. This (still quite spicy) version featured cured raw shrimp, served in lettuce cups. I also liked the eye-catching presentation of the grilled hamachi collar, usually a modest side dish. Served over an addictively good bed of fish sauce-loaded bread crumbs and broccolini, the collar could be the main star.
The king salmon haw mok, traditionally a Thai fish curry steamed in banana leaves, featured baek (white) kimchi wrapped salmon in a hearty bowl of green curry. And the Korean spicy noodle dish was such an enjoyable combo of bibim guksu (spicy sweet cold noodles) with Thai style grilled pork jowl.
Dessert was also memorable - a cute apple pie steamed cheesecake served in a glass jar. Brown sugar crumble and lime zest topped off this crustless combo.
Service was very friendly, with Sung checking in multiple times and explaining the personal inspiration and context behind many of the dishes. Definitely a neighborhood gem worth going out of your way for.
A must try fusion place of two distinctive Asian cuisines, Korean and Thai! The taste is super complex and authentic. When they warned me about the spicy level of their green curry, I thought to myself as a Thai person, I shouldn't have problems handling it. Turned out it's a real deal in a good way. The curry tastes just like what Thai green curry should be with the Korean twist of Kimchi and the way they wrap the cabbage around the fish. The Hamachi was grilled and seasoned perfectly. The steak was melted in the mouth. The chicken Satay is kid friendly.
We will definitely go back and recommend anyone to visit this restaurant in the near future. 😀
Overall great experience! The food always was surprising, tasty and well executed. In my opinion, the restaurant offers an amazing price/value and would recommend if you want to enjoy a more “upscale” cuisine.
The “Kimchi Rice Ball” were definitely my favorite! We also took the chicken toast which was full of different spices and mix of flavors. To enjoy it the best, make sure you divide the toppings, cucumber & red onion, equally as they definitely offer a nice final touch to the dish. Unfortunately, some of the appetizers were already sold out when we arrive, 7:30PM, which was a bit surprising and disappointing.
The TomYum Noodle Soup has a good balance between the two cuisines. I really enjoy the bites of crispy pork belly! The dish can be spicy.
The dessert was a Apple Crumble cheesecake - light and yummy! I personally prefer my apples with a bit less cinnamon and a bit more caramelized.
On another note, some table might be cold as people get in and out of the restaurant. I would suggest (1) put the wait long sign on the window so people’s don’t have to get in which will result in less traffic and (2) maybe a curtain or fake wall around the door could help with the cold from outside and create a nice separation.
Loved the food here! I got the tom yum soup and my spouse got the beef soup. Both were really well seasoned and fresh! The space is a bit cramped and there might be a fair bit of wait time if you go in the weekends, but apart from that everything else was amazing. The head chef himself came out to check in on the diners and I thought that was a sweet touch, he has a very warm personality which shows through in his food.
Everything we ordered was fantastic, the grilled hamachi collar was a standout
Outstanding meal. Rich flavors. Beautiful presentation. Very special. Welcome to the neighborhood.
Soups good. Tom yum very spicy.
