I had an amazing experience at this Thai restaurant! Everything was absolutely delicious, but the Pad Thai stood out as the highlight of my meal. The flavors were perfect, and it was cooked to perfection. Very good service.
Highly recommend this place for anyone craving authentic Thai food!
I stopped by this Thai restaurant today, and overall, it was a nice experience, though the food felt a bit overpriced . We ordered the green curry and red curry, both with chicken, but most of it were vegetables. The satay chicken skewers were over $14 for just four pieces. Overall, the food quality and service were excellent, so it’s still a Thai restaurant worth visiting.
Tum Kha Gai which is coconut base soup. It usually is made with mushrooms and bamboos but they made it with cabbages and onions. Which was ok but it was too milky. I couldn't have more than half. It was just too think and too milky. Green curry was good especially the green beans. Pad Thai was good but half of the plate was bean sprouts. It had a lot of shrimps but not much of noodles. Wish they had more of the noodles.
Loved the decorations, very unique. Very, very friendly and welcoming wait staffs. They really made me special to be there.
Went for lunch. Asked for the curry to be Thai levels of spiciness, and it was, but it seems to me it was just spiced up with some easy tossing in of dried red chili pepper. Not Thai in its spiciness at all. Included salad was just lettuce - would a few pieces of tomato killed the budget? Egg rolls are not Thai.
Atmosphere was decent, and staff friendly.
Very average Thai food. Portion was small and protein was very light, mildly overcooked. We got takeout so may have been better fresh. $18 for the amount of chicken I got in my dish was a little disappointing and flavor was rather forgettable for the potential that garlic and pepper sauce can have at other places. May eat here again but only in a rush if I’m really craving Thai downtown.
Walking by we decided to give this place a try. Although they had lunch specials, we preferred to order from the dinner menu. Ordered Panang Curry with chicken and Dan Dan Noodles with shrimp. The curry was very flavorful and the consistency of the sauce was just right. Served with steamed rice, it hit the spot. Noticed the noodles were a bit oily and we mentioned it to our waitress. She spoke to the chef and offered to remake it for us this time with less oil. It was brought to us perfectly wok seared with the right amount of bell peppers, onions and sauces. It was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend trying it out. The service was very courteous and attentive. The seating was clean and comfortable. I’d give this place a 4.5.

Food is always delicious. Green curry is amazing and the crying tiger is a must.
Great food, excellent service! Highly recommended 🥰
Nice people, wonderfull kitchen, lovely atmosphere and those, who have a brave hearts🇺🇦
Food did not taste great and was way too spicy. Also was very pricey.
great, cozy place, and thank you for supporting Ukraine!!!!
I’ve been coming to this place for years, and it’s honestly one of the best spots for Thai food I’ve ever found! The drunken noodles are my go-to comfort food—they’re always packed with flavor and perfectly made every time. And the Thai tea? It’s hands down the best I’ve ever had—smooth, refreshing, and just the right sweetness. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re seriously missing out! This place never disappoints and has become my absolute favorite for authentic Thai dishes 🥢
My go-to place after deployment. I was a regular. Excellent service and great people. Keep up the great work.

Leckeres Essen, super freundlicher Service, tolles Ambiente.
I had out of town visitors and decided to give Sab Lai, a Thai restaurant in the gas lamp district, a try. This was on Sunday 12/29/24 on a day that per hours posted on Google, the restaurant was closing at 9:30pm. We arrived at 8:48pm and there was a sign posted outside the door indicating "TAKE OUT ONLY" despite the fact that there were at least 3 tables inside where customers were clearly still eating.
Upon entering the establishment, a young female server rushed to inform me that there was no dining option besides take out. I spoke with my guests and very quickly decided to place a take out order.
The young female server was nowhere to be found and soon a young male server approached from the kitchen area and informed me that the only option was take out. I reiterated that we were interested in take out and just needed the menus so we can place the order without delay.
The young male server went back to the kitchen and instead of coming back with menus, as it was clearly still well before 9pm (much earlier than the 9:30pm closing time as per Google) and despite the sign outside the door still being posted indicating take out was still available, he announced that there was no take available either. This is despite both his own earlier statement and that of the young female server that take out was still available.
I informed him that per Google, the business was presumed to be open until 9:30pm, the sign for take out was still outside and that both the young female server earlier and himself only a a minute earlier had confirmed the availability of take out.
He was adamant that the restaurant wasn't going to serve any more food at that point and we departed. I mentioned to the young server that for a restaurant in a tourist area relying on tourism and operating in this manner was very disappointing.
We walked across the street and one block up from Sab Lai and came across AKA, a new Asian restaurant that had just opened about a month ago as I found out from AKA's hosts. I inquired with the hosts about the menu, and they informed me that they offered Chinese, Japanese and Thai dishes. I looked at the menu, was offered seating right away in this very clean and beautifully designed restaurant. My out of town guests and I had an amazing dining experience with mostly Thai dishes and they were all delectable, in fact so good that among 4 of us, we had 6 deserts in addition to some appetizers and entrees. Sab Lai won't get any future business from me. No reason to support a business that doesn't want my business especially when superior options like AKA are available just a short walk from Sab Lai.

A delicious ramen, they can improve their service and customer service.
Authentic and flavorful Thai food. Very nice drunken noodles. Hits the spot.
Great restaurant! Very good Thai food
Service was amazing
They have a few gluten free options well labeled!
We had a pad thai and a seafood green curry, really tasty!
Went here for dinner and the food was exceptional. Probably the best Thai food I've had in a long time.
Great place but $$
I did a quick take out of a side of plain white rice, normal portion and it was over $5. It tasted ok.
I don’t usually write negative reviews, but this was a singularly frustrating, dining experience.
I’ll start with the positives, the interior ambience is lovely, and the food is decent. The wait time was long, the communication was poor, and the service was atrocious.
There were two individual people in front of me to be seated, several open tables inside and 6 open outside, and I waited 15 minutes to sit.
It was at the end of their dinner rush (7:15pm), and people were leaving, so I can see if they were understaffed, this would be a tricky point in the evening.
I immediately gave my order, a large soup, side of rice, and Thai iced tea. When they brought me my tea, I double checked that I was receiving the large soup. She said I was not, but that she would correct it.
When my soup came out, my order was wrong. I let the busser know, and went inside to doublecheck w/ my server.
When it came out again correctly, they brought no bowl or utensils, etc. I waited to see if they would bring it, but nothing. I went back inside to to ask, so I could eat my dinner. This whole time no one checked on me, other than to deliver my soup/tea.
After I started eating, the server came out to ask if it was good. It was. I had to come back inside to ask for my check. She did come back out to gather my bill and offer a to-go box.
My total was $34.48 including tax+service fee. $19 for the soup, $6 tea, all reasonable. $7 for a side of rice is silly.
All in all, it was an unpleasant dining experience, and I left frustrated. I was looking for a Thai restaurant close to home. But in the future, I’ll spend the extra 10 minutes and drive to Convoy Street. Will not be returning.
my first review on google because this is absolutely ridiculous. I got the check at the same time as my entrée, while the table next to me received theirs before their food arrived. Plus, my drunken noodles super cold
Now 10 weeks pregnant, and I can’t resist some types of food at the moment. But this I can eat every day. Good service, the place was packed. I had to sit at thr bar where it was pretty cold, so that was a downside. But overall great!
Food is good, but they brought a spicy curry when we asked mild. They also got the curry very late. They don't seem to have enough people to handle large conferences.
Food is amazing. We went here twice during our visit because it was so delicious. Service is great. Prices are good. Highly recommend!!!
Really solid and authentic thai food.
음식맛 무난하고 친절한 서비스 다좋은데 화장실이 냄새나고 지저분함
Went for lunch. Asked for the curry to be Thai levels of spiciness, and it was, but it seems to me it was just spiced up with some easy tossing in of dried red chili pepper. Not Thai in its spiciness at all. Included salad was just lettuce - would a few pieces of tomato killed the budget? Egg rolls are not Thai.

Great idea to have a quality Thai spot so well located in Gaslamp, but this place doesn’t quite deliver on the promise. Food is average and atmosphere is terrible with horrid instrumental versions of pop ballads playing loud in the background to the entertainment of no one.
Best meal of our trip! So delish! We got the “banquet” which is smaller portions of a bunch of their different dishes. It was tons of food!!! This spot is definitely among my top Thai dining experiences!
Edit: The owner called me today and tried to make things right, while I already made other plans this evening, I would like to give this place anotber chance and try again in the future.
Original: I wish I could try the food and hopefully leave a slightly better review. I called a week ago to try and reserve a table for my wife's birthday as Thai food is one of her favorites. I was told to call back today since they could not take reservations that far I'm advance. When I called back today they told me they aren't accepting reservations at all. I had to find another place at the last minute to salvage birthday plans a month in the making involving friends and family coming from out of town. I am very disappointed by the service and unwillingness to take in our party of 9 who would have gladly spent plenty of money and made the restaurant and servers money.
The food and the restaurant was great. Our Paw see ew and yellow curry was delicious. Just the service there was horrible. With only 4 other tables being served it took them over 15 minutes to take our order and we had to ask for refills on our water.
JUST WOW. We stopped by this place while walking downtown and holy moly, delicious! The “drunken noodles” were amazinggg, the service was fast, the ambience was cozy and serene!! 10/10 recommend
Excellent service and food! Green curry was delicious 😋
Great food and great serving
Really good food. I recommend the pad see ew and pad Thai.
I eat here every time I'm in San Diego and they never disappoint. I highly recommend.
Some of the best Thai I have ever eaten.
Authentic and fabulous! One of our favorite places to dine in San Siego. The pumpkin curry is amazing!!!
We love this restaurant! Everything is good! It is reasonably priced for the location and how much food you receive. Staff are friendly. Menu is diverse. It feels cozy but not cramped. Love it.
Great place. Comfortable, roomy and very nice Thai food. We went for lunch and service was very very quick.
Not very kid friendly:
They have high chairs and the staff was very nice to my baby but, the restaurant shares the bathroom with an Irish pub so no diaper changing facilities for the kids.
Excellent service and food. 100/10 recommend.
Great vegan options.
I ordered drunken noodles. Hardly had any flavor and for $22 there was not enough meat
Excellent service. All but one dish was Excellent.
Ordered a Thai salad for lunch. It was tasty
Good value Thai food
Fantastic Panang curry. Low-key vibe. Service was lovely but somewhat slow. Would totally visit again.
It's very hard to fine good Thai cuisine, food was flavored pefectionitly, I would give this restraunt a 10 if I could! I Had the pork fried rice and the Thai salad with peanut sauce and it was delicious
Quick service, kind people, perfect attention to detail. I love when I can say my entire order all at once, and people just get it right the first time. Feels good to be listened to, doesn’t it? Come here; they listen to you. And it is quiet enough in here you can listen to your friends too while you’re here.
Honestly, I was a bit surprised by this place, considering its touristy location!
I did stop by here, around 2pm, so it wasn't crowded.
It's such a cute gem. The faux chinese lantern lighting is absolutely adorable. Love the wide booth seating that draws your eyes to the built-in bookshelves in the back of the room, making this place look so chic and cozy at the same time. The music here gives me a chill lounge vibe: acoustic versions of famous songs without lyrics.
Prices are a bit higher, but I think the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere is worth it!
I had the Choo chee duck and it was delicious. I had my curry on the side, so the duck was on the dry side (crispy skin!), but it was great with the sauce, and you can be sure their rice was the right consistency :) The Thai tea was as expected! The amount of food for me was a lot!
Enjoy!
big portions! great flavours, and pretty reasonable price! very nice atmosphere as well; plus, the food came very fast.
Came here for lunch just after landing at SAN, food was delicious, staff was very kind and welcoming, and the decor is great. This place is much larger than I thought upon entering, in addition to the main dining room, there is a bar at the back with bar seating and traditional tables.
Foods was just okay. Nothing special. Also - they charge you for using a credit card. That’s a new one for me.
We ate dinner here after the Lunar New Year Fair. Food and service was great!
Really great restaurant which actually has spicy food! The decor is quite nice and the service super quick and friendly.
We had the drunken noodles with seafood which was pretty big and had a good amount of seafood in it which was nice.
For the other dish we did the chicken massaman curry. First time trying this dish anywhere and it was fantastic. The curry, coconut and mix of peanuts was delicious. This dish was definitely spicier than the drunken noodles. We had ordered this one as level 6 and the noodles 9 however this one proved to be spicier somehow. We both enjoy spicy food so it wasn't a problem for us. Would definitely go back if we were in the area again.
Does anyone know if the restaurant is permanently closed? I’ve been calling they do not answer, it goes to a voicemail! How strange and disappointing.
FYI for plant-based folks: Sab Lai Thai Kitchen has a notable number of vegan and vegetarian dishes if you’re on a plant-based diet.
I tried the drunken noodles with chicken. It took about 20 minutes for me to receive my food. The restaurant was busy and packed on a Monday evening. They had no seating indoors, so I was seated outside on a bar stool facing the streets. The food was spicy, but not unbearably spicy and it was flavorful with the basil. Since I was dining solo, I had eaten about half of the plate and asked for the rest to be packed to go. The staff were nice and checked to make sure I had utensils when I was packing my leftovers to go. I personally won't be returning since I experienced an allergic reaction with outbreak of hives.
The red Thai curry was amazing, mango ice tea was really good too. Great menu for vegetarian/vegan diets !
Good Thai food at great prices and friendly service.
Mediocre. I definitely expected more from a Thai restaurant on 5th street. Very little meat and pineapple in my pineapple fried rice with duck. The cream cheese wontons were like none I've ever tried, tasted like they are filled with sour cream, super weird.
The Pad Thai is delicious!! The interior is really nice and aesthetic. Would love to go here again.
The Chicken Pad Thai was really good. The noise from the bar next door didn't make our visit very pleasant.
As a new vegan this restaurant provided me with good health food to meet my food restrictions diet . Good food in a nice location, right at the front of the gas lamp district in San Diego California. And after eating you can walk and bar hop downtown San Diego.
Super nice staff! The restaurant was crowded but they were able to make accommodations for our big family. Big thanks to Nook!! Wonderful food and ambiance.
Really good food and service. Ambience is great. Long wait though and they charge $4 extra for credit card.
Otherworldly food. While I always liked Thai food, never realised it would be so good that words can’t describe it.
Green curry with mixed seafood was the pinnacle (everything was good).
Due to the impossibly goof food, they can escape with the below par service
I am from Canada and here on holidays and this Thai place has got to be one of the best I have had in years. The overwhelming amount of choices in the area made it hard to decide but this place was incredibly delicious and worth the decision making. Me and my pregnant wife were silent while eating and only saying “OMG THIS IS DELICIOUS” the whole time. 10/10 in my books.
The food is great and also the Staff is very friendly. I have eaten there twice and I can recommend it.
I'm in San Diego for the weekend and was seeking a serene spot for my first dinner downtown. I was captivated by this restaurant. It's quiet, incredibly cozy, and the food is excellent. Beyond the delightful decor and atmosphere, the waitstaff is wonderful—smiling, very polite, and charming. I highly recommend this place! 👌
The culinary experience at this place is superb! I opted for the chicken curry, and its flavor was truly delightful. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff is exceptionally friendly. The food service was reasonably prompt. I definitely plan to return when I find myself in San Diego again.
Nice staff and cute restaurant. Slightly overpriced and i have had better thai food but it still hit the spot! Would recommend if you’re in the area and want to sit down to eat somewhere. They have a dedicated vegan menu too!
Tried this during our visit to San Diego and LOVED it! Tons of vegan options, amazing service, and delicious food.
Worst experience for a gas-lamp quarter restaurant.
My friend’s drink order was wrong, we decided not to bother.
Food Order took forever! No etiquette, when there’s a group order, all serves at the same time or within a few minutes. You don’t spend 15min between servings.
They got my order wrong, finally when it was served! with an allergen I requested not to add being added to it.
Asked to fix the order, and took so long, yet not served, so I ended up cancelling the order.
Tasteless, no spice no flavors.
Outstanding food and service. Our party had the red curry with chicken, the yellow curry with chicken, the pumpkin curry with tofu, and the drunken noodles. All was excellent and more than we could eat for a very reasonable price
Service is very attentive. Food was mixed. The naked shrimp was succulent and perfectly prepared. The duck was tough and dry. I suspect it was thawed quickly and then way over cooked. If you don’t sell enough duck to make it work for you, just take it off the menu. You will be doing the ducks and your customers a favor.
Laid back atmosphere with good pad Thai. I'd give six stars simply for the person who took my order and was attentive enough to check on whether or not I had food allergies. I've never had that experience. Two thumbs up to her.
Every time I visit San Diego I would get my Thai fix here. The Thai tea and chicken pad Thai is so delicious every time! My family is originally from that area, so definitely an authentic taste.
Very nice place with very nice food!
If you are in San Diego, you should go there.
Incredibly underrated option for delicious Thai food in the Gaslamp district.
While attending a large conference for work, my party needed a lunch spot and didn’t love the incredibly long lines at so many of the options closer to the convention center. This place was absolutely worth the extra 5 min walk.
Service was great, the atmosphere was cozy, and the food was just amazing. We enjoyed a variety of curries this time and would come back without hesitation to try more.
Overall, very good, affordable, and less crowded option in a very busy part of town. Don’t skip out!
My visit here left me with mixed feelings. The food, unfortunately, didn't live up to my expectations. It was rather mediocre and lacked the vibrant flavors I associate with Thai cuisine. The service, on the other hand, was decent; the staff was attentive and polite. However, the overall experience was unimpressive, and I left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. I had hoped for a more exciting and flavorful culinary adventure.
Very nice establishment. The service was wonderful and the vegan pad Thai was some of the best I have ever had.
The green curry was amazing! Loved this place.
Great food in a casual atmosphere. Helpful staff.
DELICIOUS! Had Drunken Noodles (spice 8/10). Great service and tasteful ambience.
A very laid back place. Don't let that fool you. Great food, nice size portions. Our server was tops.
one of my SD favorites. good location and even better food.
Little gem with very delicious food and great atmosphere!
Such a quaint, cute restaurant. The food tastes amazing and the service is even better. It was a very relaxing experience away from the loud atmosphere of the Gaslamp quarter. We will definitely come back whenever we are visiting.
I’ve eaten here for both delivery to my office and also for eating in. Great friendly service with a nice atmosphere inside. They also have a patio to 5th street if you want to people watch. They don’t directly serve alcohol but the attached bar does. My most recent lunch was flavorful with the right level of spice. Affordable with a lunch special too- lots of choices. Popular with a large crowd for sharing also.
My wife and I love thai food. So we walked in on Thursday lunch time. Place was pretty empty. Nicely greeted and sat down at a good sized table. The restaurant offered a 'lunch menu' or order off the full menu. I asked the server their favorite choice on the lunch menu. She suggested the Thai basil. It was amazing! Perfect lunch portion.
Solid food and drink options. Oddly, spice levels were off: one person got super spicy and the other did not. We just assumed the chef mixed up the orders.
Filling but oily and sweet food from this Thai restaurant. Portion size is good and price is ok (drunken noodles with a green coconut is just over $30, with the coconut being a bit more expensive than the juices and soft drink options). Gets busy at night so be ready to wait for a range, during the day though it's less busy. Space inside and outside with a good vibe.
Super Küche, freundliches Personal
Was extremely rude on the phone when called about questions pertaining to food allergens. Was initially excited to try here, but will be avoiding. Dismissive staff.
Garlic pepper chicken was awesome, service was fantastic.
I'm visiting San Diego for the weekend and was looking for a peaceful place for a first dinner downtown. I was charmed by this restaurant. Quiet, very cozy, good food. Not only the decoration and atmosphere were lovely, but I also loved the waiters and waitresses, smiling , very polite, and charming. I recommend this place 👌
Lovely. Great food and ambiance. Big portions.
We went here as a group from a conference in the conference center. This a was s nice place. It was clean and there people were friendly. The workers were running everywhere making sure that everyone was happy.
I ordered the hot Thai basil entree. It was dang good. There were 6 of us and we all are out food family style. So, everyone shared each other's meal. It was the way to go. It was fun trying everyone's food.
We were visiting this restaurant in San Diego and did take out twice. We did the yellow curry Comb, and the next time we did Pad Thai they we both so good. The young lady that helped us, was really sweet. Thanks for good customer service. We will be back again once in San Diego.
We came in Sunday afternoon, early dinner. Plenty of tables available.
We were a tad bit skeptical at first. My companion ordered pineapple fried rice and rated it a 4,I ordered the red curry over Jasmine rice, I rate it 5. I enjoyed the music and atmosphere. Calm and chill.
Great little serendipitous find. Food and ambiance is great.
