Laid-back eatery tucked away in a convenience store serving Thai dishes to stay or go.
I’m surprised how affordable this place is for the authenticity and value of the food. My go-to lunch spot at least once a week. Service is also really good. Bonus is the market, the owner is also super chill.
As others have mentioned this is a funky hole in the wall place that serves Thai food. I ordered Tom Yum with chicken and Pad Thai with chicken.
Soup came out quickly, was very good and came with lots of chicken chunks!
Pad Thai was also very good; served deconstructed. I mixed it all together and enjoyed every bite!
Only has 1 big booth, 2 four tops and a single 2 top, so seating could be an NJ issue during peak times. They do "to go" orders too.
I’ve been going here for years and the food I get is always on point. It’s usually pretty quick to get your food. I recommend putting your order online if you want it to be even faster! Bonus is that it’s connected with a liquor store. Staff is friendly as well.
Fast and tasty. Prices are cheap, but the servings are a bit small so I'd recommend two entrees if youre hungry. Very little seating.
I don’t know why it’s taken us so long to return. Maybe it’s because we are spoiled by a few other Thai spots closer to us and it’s easy to pick birria in this neighborhood. But we needed somewhere to eat one day that was something different than the last few meals and Thai just sounded good. We were quite happy to order the pad see ew with beef and the massaman curry. The Thai iced tea was perfect! I didn’t realize there was seating inside since we had previously ordered takeout, so we ate in and had zero leftovers to take home. We will definitely be back soon.
This place is a gem! Great thai food with that street feel and super affordable prices!
So far we tried most of the things on the menu and it's just so so tasty!
The shop is inside of a liquor store so don't think you missed it haha
There's usually plenty of street parking around. Also there are a few tables outside of you want to eat there which is nice.
Highly recommend tom yum with shrimp - that's my favorite and it's only $5

Hidden Gem
Great food and flavor. If I could have one critique it was that the potato was pretty big.

Best yellow curry sauce in the world.
Most pitiful portions of meat. They stick an entire potato in a box to fill up half the space and it isn't fooling anyone. Raise your prices and provide more food or take out most of the potato. No one wants an entire potato in their dish.
Prices are typical for Thai food.
Only take out.
Edit: Year later update, still don't want a whole potato. Still love the yellow curry.
San Diego's best kept secret. This small kitchen in the back of a liquor store in Golden Hills neighborhood makes some of the best Thai food around. I highly recommend it.
The food is amazing and they are back open.
Continues to be the best go-to thai spot for me
This was a huge disappointment. I knew that it was in the back of a liquor store, with only a few very small tables, but I had been led to believe that the quality was much higher. Additionally, the cashier said we could drink beer at the outside tables. The owner of the liquor store was adamant that no liquor could be consumed on the premises. The food was average at best.
This is a go-to takeout place for us that hits the mark every time. Service is always very fast and reliable.
Best Thai I’ve had in San Diego! Order from here quite often and it’s alway delicious!
Super disappointed with the last few times I’ve gotten food here. Unfortunately it has really gone downhill. Not sure what happened. The spicy basil chicken was like canned cat food and the pad see ew was like half the quantity it usually is, didn’t have any Chinese broccoli and bland. I got pad thai last time and it was really dry. I won’t be eating here anymore :(
Is ok...nothing wow
This place has really gone downhill in the past 2 years. The pad see ew noodles we received tonight via doordash was completely false advertising. The noodles were the thin pad thai noodles instead of the wide pad see ew noodles and the chinese brocolli was missing. There was also barely any flavor. We will never order from them again. Save your money and order elsewhere.
Always get take out. Sub par but gets the job done.
Great food
Great place with great food
Outstanding cuisine with excellent quality! The dishes are flavorful, healthy, and incredibly fresh. It offers great value, and the staff is exceptionally friendly. I've frequented this establishment many times and will continue to support this business because I love it! However, my only complaint is that occasionally there's a lengthy wait for food, with 45 minutes being a norm during busy times.
The food taste good, but the portions were little pit small. Overall is good for the reasonable price.
This is our go to Thai place. Sadly moved a bit away and the one at college recently closed.
It is in a package store so great for takeout.
Some of the best tom yum I've had. Thought the serving looked small but I was satisfied when I was done. Interesting location
Cucina da provare
Ordered takeout for lunch. Normally this place has been pretty decent, but today it was outright terrible. The chicken in the yellow curry tasted like it had been reheated several times. The rice they gave us smelled gross and looked dried up, like it sat out in a pot overnight. The drunken noodles were disgusting. Looked and tasted like week-old leftovers. The spring rolls were burnt on one side. It was pathetic. I've ordered from here many times before, but never again.
Great food and great service!!!
Totally my kind of spot! Gives a speakeasy feel when one walks through the liquor store to get to the restaurant part. My favorite is the Tom Yum soup with 🍜 noodles, chicken & veggies. It's my "caldito" twice a month.
Food was good....
Drunken noodles were not good! Tasted nothing like drunken noodles and they were made out of angel hair pasta?
Fast, affordable, clean, efficient, friendly. Healthy portions of fresh veggies. Great option!
Meh. My fiancée and I tried to like this place, we really did. We enjoy good Thai food and the proximity of 55 Thai Kitchen made it a no brainer to try. However, the flavor just wasn’t doing it for us and we tried it on 3 separate occasions. Each time we thought maybe we got a bad batch and that the next time it would be better. Don’t get the wrong, the food is still fine. It’s just nothing to get excited about. For us at least, we would much rather drive to get some better tasting Thai then walk down the street and get 55 Thai Kitchen.
3rd time ordering in a row where we’ve received no cutlery, no napkins and no straws despite requesting them every time. We’re staying in a rental with zero cutlery so once again we have no ability to eat our food! My husband has now had to drive out to find a store that sells cutlery at 8.30pm which is unlikely! Food will be soggy and cold by the time he’s back no doubt. So annoying guys!
I order a dunken noodles with shrimp and chicken and a side of white rice. The dunken noodles was soggy it did not had vegetables and no flavor. I felt like I was not eating noodles 😕. The food dose not taste the same.
Great basic Thai menu. No need for fancy when you have 55 Thai.
Not a huge menu but so far every dish has been delicious. The Massaman Chicken Curry is amazing super tasty and they give you the chili oil on the side so you can make it as spicy as you like!
Cashier is rude and unprofessional.
I was not disappointed. The curry and service were exceptional.
This place is truly a wonderful Thai kitchen hidden in the back of a liquor store. Must have the vegetarian crispy spring rolls and the soups, they are full of flavor, always served fresh and hot.
They have made ordering very easy and picking up food to go by. Calling in is very simple of the Pad Thai and the Massaman on curry are delicious.
The staff is friendly and courteous.
It’s an almost hidden treasure of Golden Hill.
Dine in is never open. I’ve been living down the street for a few weeks and have never seen it open. When I asked them about, he said because it was raining (it was just raining today). It’s pretty lame because I was excited about having a go-to restaurant nearby.
This is closed and boarded up with homeless camping outside.
I love this place cooked to order so you just have to wait on the freshness and the good food.
Food is great... But the slow service is insane. It took 45 minutes for my order to make. 🥴
Authentic or not, idgaf. My spring rolls, tom kha soup and yellow curry are delicious EVERYTIME. I order online and I’m in and out! Love it here!
Hours are wrong or the employees don’t want to serve us. Has happened multiple times. I don’t know why I keep giving this place a chance
The food was good and spicy
Ordered Green curry chicken “hot” via grubhub. Arrived not spicy at all not even a little. Was expecting extra peppers or at least some heat but was pretty bland. No evidence of added hot chili pods like other places. Doesn’t seem that there was any effort so satisfy the order option “hot”. Won’t be ordering again.
I don’t know why it’s taken us so long to return. Maybe it’s because we are spoiled by a few other Thai spots closer to us and it’s easy to pick birria in this neighborhood. Pad Thai was pretty alright, had good flavor but imo there wasn’t much spice in it. I did notice they didn’t have a spice meter on their menu, which I wasn’t a fan of but oh well.
Everything in the menu is delectable.
They make it well and tasty. I am so happy that they have three locations in San Diego. Thanks for the quality and also offering Boba Tea!
Decent Thai food. More of a take way place.
Previously got good food here. Seems to have gone downhill.
Always love my comfort food dish. I get no spice green curry with extra sauce and always love it. I usually add chicken but had it with shrimp as well. Parking is a bit hard but I usually get lucky. The crew is nice and I also like eating here when time permits. It's convenient to take out and grab some wine or something in the convenience store. I love that! It's a hidden gem. Oh and the thai ice tea with little ice is always a winner!!
Disappointed with this place. I was looking forward to trying this place out due to reviews. However the service was terrible. I arrived at the restaurant shortly after opening. No other clients were present. Instead of greeting me happily, I was greeted with” it’s going to be at least 30 minutes for your order due to a larger takeout order that’s being prepared”. Everyone seemed flustered. It took 20 minutes to get a Thai Ice tea. I placed an order for drunken Thai noodles and asked for it to be spicy. It was prepared mild with absolutely no flavor. The noodles were thrown over the slices off beef that was clearly not sautéed with the noodles. That was a first for me. The drunken noodles included several vegetables. I been to Thailand several times and never had drunken noodles with 5 different vegetables. This is not traditional Thai. Drunken noodles should only include Basil, red peppers and green beans and the beef sautéed with the flavors. Disappointed 😔. If you want good Thai food you are not going to find it in SD. Take a trip to SF.
It’s lit
Low key Thai spot in the heart of the hills. Good food made fresh to order in a family-owned restaurant chain. I’m hooked on their tom kah soup paired with Thai fried rice.
Good taste and big portions but some details missed the mark. Neither of our dishes were cooked with coriander (cilantro), my fried egg topping was so overcooked it was an omelet, and lemon wedges are certainly not authentic. Thai food should always come with limes!
Always so good! I look forward to when I'm close to any 55 Thai..Call ahead if your in a rush.
Excellent..hot at serving food. Tucked in the back of a store....ran into SDPD. Thumbs up for yrs., from the boys in blue
Always good food for a fair price
Don't be fooled by the location and or the initial look. Let the food AND customer service be it's own judge...AMAZING FOOD!!! (and I'm a chef by trade). AUTHENTIC mom & pop style restaurant. In fact...I'd even say it's GRANDMA level lol.
Oh! The prices...its so so affordable!
I would leave 1 start but the food wasn’t horrible. It was ok. I get the whole concept, fast Thai, but still…. Curries are watery, not bad but not great. No a restaurant so please be advised. Serving sizes are small for the price. I wouldn’t recommend or come here again. The service was also 2 stars, the young man that helped us very indifferent and don’t dare ask for extra fork or anything because he will be very annoyed. Very disappointed since it had good reviews. Save your money, go elsewhere.
bussin, think I might've gained about 20 lbs but worth it
Small menu but very good. Friendly staff
The freshest cuts of chicken I've ever had in a Pad Thai. That immediately won my praise. Who knew a restaurant in a liquor store would be the best Thai place in town ?
Wow did not even realize what I was walking into but right from the start we were greeted with kindness and patience. Ww decided to eat in. Great staff, vibe(music), menu prices and home cook top tier cooking!! Loved every bite and sip. Had the Thai style fried rice and both Tom yum and Tom kha with some iced coffee and boba 🙏🏽🤌🏾 so good. Hope to come back anytime we are in town.
Condensed menu of most well known Thai dishes in the back of a neighborhood convenience store. Been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. Call ahead and have it waiting by the time you get there. If you order in-store you can expect a 15 minute wait for your order during the evening. Pro note: their last call is at 840pm so keep that in mind for your plans.
My order is always prepared correctly, and still hot when I get home!! Golden Hill location is the best!
The Tom Yum soup is great because it isn't expensive, it tastes great, and it isn't filled with carrots or other fillers. Good amount of mushrooms and shrimp. A+
Everything we tried delicious. Green curry, Tom yum and crispy rolls.
Not even owned by thai people. So disappointed i wasted $12. Pas thai had no peanuts and not enough flavor.
The quality is really good considering the price is so reasonably low.
Just discovered this place and I've been here 4 times in a month. Very friendly staff. Food is good. I really like their fried tofu. It's tucked in the back of a liquor store. Indoor and outdoor seating available. I recommend ordering online or calling in your order.
My husband and I really enjoyed our meals. We even got DoorDash and it showed up still hot and fresh! My husband had the pad Thai and I had the drunken noodles. My drunken noodles was loaded with veggies and had great flavor. We both were happy with the spicy, not too spicy we couldn’t eat it but not spicy enough that it didn’t have flavor. Get your Thai food tonight!
This is one of my favorite Thai places in San Diego. I've had dinner here probably 20 different times over the last three years. The food is always excellent and I love the back of the market-hidden jewel vibe, because from the outside it totally doesn't look like a restaurant. This is the best kept secret of San Diego and when you go here during the golden hour, when the weather is nice, sitting outside at their tables can't be beat.
Food was bland, inside of a market, no seating. Will not return. Worst anniversary dinner ever
liked the food but its a hole in the wall of a ma n pa grocery store
The food was really good! Totally recommended.
this place is amazing!!!!! ordered the first time and was blown away with how good their food is! will be ordering again for sure
Great cooking. During COVID there are tables on the sunny side of the building. Just few, but very good vegan vegetarian options
😍😍😍😍😍
Unfortunately the pad Thai is not good. I ordered the chicken and shrimp pad Thai for pickup and when I opened the box I realized I received three shrimps and barely any chicken. This meal was a disappointment as I was really looking forward to it. The boba on the other hand - amazing.
Located in the back of convenience store for convenience lol. But seriously, good place. Smells great. I ordered the Gai Pad (Chicken) I might be saying it wrong, one crispy spring roll, and Pad Thai. I didn't like my Pad Thai. Was slimy to me. But the place seemed authentic so was probably just personal taste. Will have to try somewhere else to compare. But I want to return and try their drunken noodles. They have plenty of options. Parking is tight. Not many spaces at least at night when I went. Sometimes they get so busy they don't give you full attention, but the staff is very polite and patient. The place is small, but has many options, and even offers online ordering. I'd suggest ordering online. The wait is about 15-30mins if you order 2 or more items in a entree/appetizer fashion.
Great food and fair prices
Very good and tasteful meals coming from this kitchen, good staff and never knew they were so close to my house...
The absolute most delicious Tom Kha soup I've ever enjoyed, including Thailand. Top notch Drunken Noodles with Beef. Thai Iced Tea, though, wasn't as impressive as the boba was not thoroughly cooked. Otherwise extremely amazing. Nice and efficient people there 👌
I ate too quickly to take a photo!
Not authentic Thai, good price. Ordered two curries and while the food was decent in quality the taste is very far from authentic. Takes a toll on the stomach, would not eat this again.
This place was recommended to me by a friend. The service was perfect, and the food was absolutely amazing. When I die, I hope that I go here so that I can spend eternity in paradise.
it was great, not sure why the service was horrible today
Great food from kitchen in the back of a bodega.
Super for takeaway. Tables outside but not much ambience.
Good quality & value
This place is a gem! Great thai food with that street feel and super affordable prices!
So far we tried most of the things on the menu and it's just so so tasty!

Highly recommend tom yum with shrimp - that's my favorite and it's only $5
We ordered there pad Thai it tasted like Tajim! There Tom Kha soup was horrible. I would not recommend at all. The curry is good. But I will not order from this place again.
Great food. This is tucked away in a neighborhood market. Had no idea it was there. We ate at a park nearby.
Great pad thai
Always a great experience, whether ordering online or visiting in person. Everyone is always so helpfull and polite. For sure the best phone ordering experience for my picky self :) Will support this business and gladly refer to friends. Thank You for being kind.
Lots of flavor and good quality!
I'm the kind of guy who rarely complains about anything, but this is without a doubt the worst thai food I've ever had in my life. I ordered the drunken noodle and picked it up and it was basically just chicken onions peppers with too much oil and no seasoning. A few noodles. No flavor whatsoever. The sort of quality you'd get from an 18 year old's first attempt at stir fry without a recipe. Definitely not anything worth paying take out prices for. The guy at the counter was polite and helpful though.
Happy to have this place hear home. You can order takeout, so I'm really appreciate that you are working now, guys!
This place is delicious & inexpensive. Basically everything I’ve tried makes my taste buds happy.
Very slow service. Ran out of bobba but told us only when giving us our tea not when ordering. 30 mins estimate wait time for food turned into 55 mins
One of my favorite local spots for a while now... but I’m giving two stars tonight because a couple times now (within the last couple months), my orders have been off. An tonight, my fried rice was soaked and glossy with oil. :(
7.75 USD food and 3 USD drinks, price-quality excellent and delivery is fast.
The food is always cooked perfectly
Great Thai food hidden in liquor store
Gr8
Me and the bois go there all the time. I really appreciate how we can be really loud and not get kicked out. thank you so much for not kicking us out
Fast, fresh & delicious!
Great thai!
Outstanding Thai take out. Online ordering is a breeze and the orders have always been correct. Staff is friendly. Five stars. Lucky to have this spot in the neighborhood. Tom yum, Gai Tod and Massaman curry are the stand outs for us.
